Fact for most of what you mentioned. Yeah they were inspiring each other and competition as well , at least from Buddy Rich standpoint, anyone who's known him on or off stage could back that , he was a competitor in every sense, and undefeated at drums to this day - something another drummer could more than comprehend bud, including Ed and the rest of us.
Ed was such a student of the drums/percussion he took a 6 month sabbatical from his job, to travel to African villages, and study their drummers. Pretty impressive, to me... P.S. I'll never forget the night when Johnny, Sammy Davis Jr., Ed Shaughnessy, and Buddy ALL played at once. Pretty killer, until Johnny and Sammy (the puppies) went and sat down, while the "Big Dogs" got down, (tradin' 4's) kinda' like they did here. Had to have been in the late 1970's-early 80's when I saw that episode. Worked dayshift, drove an hour to work, started at 7AM, & I STILL stayed up & watched it! lol
I remember watching this as a sophomore in HS when it aired originally. Nothing like watching and listening to a good drum duel between two experts at the top of their profession. Eddie on his Ludwigs and Buddy on his Slingerlands. 😄👍🇺🇸
Among the many things that could be said im pretty confident that i just witnessed the best two drummers to have ever played together.and, i didn't know that ed was in the top 5 and maybe no.2
I could hardly work in my garden at 63, since My joints and back gets sore. Playing drums like this at 73 defies reality. Other ageless legends are Buddy Rich (RIP) and Carl Palmer.
Ed Shaughnessy showed a lot of class and professionalism by using a BR style drum kit for this duel. Buddy Rich....the greatest drummer ever.... And one of Buddy's favorite drummers. Great stuff.
Joe Morello, Steve Gadd and countless others were as good. However, it's just that they weren't any better then Buddy Rich. It comes down to which style of drumming you prefer.
You ask any professional drummer (past or present) .... "Who's the Greatest Drummer of All Time?".. 99 out of 100 of them would probably say "Buddy Rich"
Awesome drumming !! No competition here, just a great demo of technique and speed. Buddy has always been my preferred Jazz drummer. But Ed is also a unique top shelf drummer. Love em both !!
Notice Ed still has his 'snares' on and Buddy usually turns his off. For people who do not know, there is a lever on the side of a snare drum - Up is on, and down is off.
I never get tired of watching Buddy Rich clips, he is truly one of the best. I noticed in this clip he may be the inventor of the blast beat the way he's one hand hitting 32nd notes on the snare.
I'm pretty sure he did. Every solo I've ever seen him play showcases insanely fast singles between the kick and left hand. And that was DECADES before metal songs had them, kids.
Unca Buddy and Unca Eddie.....two masters who enjoyed the art of drumming and eachother's friendship. Carson, too a close friend of both Rich and Shaughnessy, knew the magic that was taking place.
Wow a hot summer night in 1978. I was 14 and I'm glad I was old enough to see the end of this era/generation. The Dean Martin Roasts, Playboy Magazine, R.I.P. Carson and Buddy. I absolutely love Buddy, but Ed sounded really, really good
This was uploaded to RUclips 11 years ago. And has less than 1 million views. How is that even possible? The performance here is amazing to say the least.
+Ramon Key I hear & have heard all about Buddy Rich, when talking about the drummer he was amongst the absolute best ever & I'm aware of the Weckl's & the alike & the insane mind boggling drummers now & since..i sat in front of him in the early 90's.. I know what I saw..& I'm the cynical critical jealous envious critic..there were no yea buts…every drummer has hangups & baggage his was more public than the overwhelming majority..He worked a snare like so few can.
The smiles from the get go. Buddy setting the driving tempo with a grin on his face. Ed, perhaps the only worthy opponent, accepts Buddy’s challenge with the same grin.
Not a battle at all - why can't we dig two great drummers flexing their chops with each other and just enjoy it? These are two of my favorite, and two of the best, drummers of all time, having a great time for a few minutes. Awesome!
I'd love to see Billy Cobham vs jack dejohnette: Billy for his amazing speed and exhilaratingly sharp precision, and jack for his amazing, offbeat-centred versatility.
The real winner is me, the viewer.
+Tempo Nelson Such a wonderful display of drumming.

I remember watching this as a sophomore in HS when it aired originally. Nothing like watching and listening to a good drum duel between two experts at the top of their profession. Eddie on his Ludwigs and Buddy on his Slingerlands. 😄👍🇺🇸
I actually remember seeing this show back in 78! Who could forget Ed and Buddy two of the greatest drummers that ever lived!
That was so cool to see. Two great talents. Bravo!!!
What I like about this is that Ed just went for it and gave Buddy a battle! Great entertainment.
Among the many things that could be said im pretty confident that i just witnessed the best two drummers to have ever played together.and, i didn't know that ed was in the top 5 and maybe no.2
damn, Shaughnessy. putting that one in the ol' rolodex
I could hardly work in my garden at 63, since My joints and back gets sore. Playing drums like this at 73 defies reality. Other ageless legends are Buddy Rich (RIP) and Carl Palmer.
There are 2 facial expressions during this, jaw dropping disbelief throughout and a big beaming smile at the end...
Hogwash
He's right! Buddy Rich!
@@thevmanvj You're gddamn right.
Awesome drumming !! No competition here, just a great demo of technique and speed. Buddy has always been my preferred Jazz drummer. But Ed is also a unique top shelf drummer. Love em both !!
Buddy was just on another level!
And Ed was right there, with Buddy, the whole way.
@@starguy2718 Do you really believe that?
I've played the drums for years. After watching this, it's back to the kazoo for me. : /
Once in a life time. They don't make em like that any more.
A lot of today’s top drummers would struggle here.
Listen to how tight Buddy’s snare is.
Notice Ed still has his 'snares' on and Buddy usually turns his off.
For people who do not know, there is a lever on the side of a snare drum - Up is on, and down is off.
LOLwut? Buddy's snares aren't off.
I love the sound of ED's toms but buddy's left hand is the real deal and his snare sounds crystal clear.
Right! If I could have the sound of Buddys snare and Eds toms, I'd be in heaven.
Awesome solos - as a drummer myself I can appreciate the massive talent and technique that went into solos like these...RIP both Buddy and Ed!
Unca Buddy and Unca Eddie.....two masters who enjoyed the art of drumming and eachother's friendship. Carson, too a close friend of both Rich and Shaughnessy, knew the magic that was taking place.
I never get tired of this!
I'm not a drummer. But I know genius when I see it.
I'm no painter, but that Michaelangelo guy sure knows how to put paint on canvas.
Yeah, it was like that.
Wow a hot summer night in 1978. I was 14 and I'm glad I was old enough to see the end of this era/generation. The Dean Martin Roasts, Playboy Magazine, R.I.P. Carson and Buddy. I absolutely love Buddy, but Ed sounded really, really good
***** R.I.P. All three.Johnny,Buddy, And Ed.
ClassofEighty2....
I was 13 in 78...Remember all those guys as well! A time that will never come again I'm afraid!
Wow, Eddie is terrific but Buddy is the Babe Ruth of drummers. He is simply the greatest.
Eddie let his friend, the guest, shine a little more, I think. Which is what you do for a guest.
@@nazfrde LOL.
If Buddy was Babe Ruth, Ed was at least Lou Gehrig.
@@joeday4293 well put. ES looked like he was having such a blast. He looked like he could do this all day, every day.
This was uploaded to RUclips 11 years ago. And has less than 1 million views. How is that even possible?
The performance here is amazing to say the least.
You can say what you want about the Buddy Rich but one thing we all know is this guy had fun playing and loved music
Ed beats Buddy in a sideburns contest easily
As well as in the nicest guy category.
And the drumming category
@@hungrydrummerjoey3440 bro.. a heart attack coudn't beat him during a solo.
Man they were GREAT and boy did Buddy Rich have a fine set of choppers lol
