There is absolutely no room for error on that snare drum! That thing is tight, and those snares are taunt! Be like a guitar player playing straight out of an amp with no distortion, pedals, etc.that snare is as clean as you can make it. Buddy's hands were so well matched, you can't tell if he was a true righty or lefty. Scary GOOD!!
I've seen many, many of his solos , seen him plenty of times live .... and this might be the best solo I've seen of his ... IF there is one best of his. Who else could have pulled this solo off , going that long and to perfection but Buddy Rich ? The Apprentice takes the easy and makes it look difficult while the Master takes the impossible and makes it look easy! Neil Peart regarding Buddy Rich RIP BUDDY AND PROFESSOR!
Unusual camera angles on this one! The most amazing feature of his playing for me has always been the number of compelling "phonemes" he can generate on the spot to engage the ear. His soloing is so RICH!
Buddy, unlike others before and after him, saw things other drummer did not see. He saw “a cymbal” as a huge instrument within itself. It had tiny keys all over it, with their own unique sound. Same for each drum and rim. His hands and technical skills were without equal, but I think his greatest talent was his ability to play the zones of everything in front of him. Like him or not, you can’t deny his skill and passion.
Another astounding display of creativity, skill, concentration, stamina, coordination, musicality, and flawless execution by the master. He did things on a nightly basis that can never be duplicated. Pure spontaneity and inspiration.
He almost never looks at this drums when playing, his stare is in the same spot. I know Neil Peart is a huge fan and I can head some of Neil in the solo. Buddy must have gotten more chick than the singer, oh wait, there wasn't one LOL Amazing stick control!
Most excellent point there Trex!! My thought precisely! I wonder how awesome and even MORE he could do in shorts, arms free in a sleeveless well worn T-Shirt!?!? Put some famous rock drummers in a sportcoat, slacks, and tie...I'D BET MONEY THEY'D FALTER AND ERR!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing..Astounding ...back in 1973 I sat 6 feet away from him, front row at the Sydney jazz club. The most jaw dropping experience of my drumming life, the set lasted an hour or so, He was fill on , sweating and growling. I feel incredibly privlaged , I was 20yrs old. I'm still mesmerized!
Your experience sounds virtually identical to what happened to me in early 1978. I saw him at small club in Evanston IL, sat to Buddy's right, in the front row, so had an unimpeded view of both hands & both feet. I was 10 feet away from him. Just like you say, it was the most jaw dropping experience of my drumming life. Among other things, Buddy was in a mood that night to utilize his left hand drum roll capability. He used it extensively. Not only was it impossibly fast, even more importantly it was impossibly smooth. Musically perfect. I was so mesmerized, I kid you not, on the 45 minute drive home I could barely speak to my girlfriend. It actually scared her at first because I was driving and she thought something was really wrong with me!
@@cloudview747 Thanks for sharing that Yeah sounds alot like mine emotionally. Just a stunning and unforgettable experience I hope your girl friend wasn't to jealous haha...Buddy was such a blast force and being so close to him was really exciting .Glad to have read you had a similar experience .
I seriously doubt if he could ever play the exact same solo twice in in a row. Only thing he could ever play was rudiments fast and loud. Nothing memorable at all
Every time I watch one of his gigs, I get tired all over... I've been playing drums for well over 50 years and grew up watching him. Less than a year after I started playing, I knew I had less than a zero chance of even getting close to that. Now, I know it's not about trying to match him, it's just about doing what you do as best as you can personally do it. I'm 64 and I still practice 2 hours every day (though it's on an e-kit so the neighbors stay 'neighborly). My hands don't work like they did when I was 30 but I think I'm better overall than I was back then. Still, after I watch one of his solos, I need to wait a few hours before I even think about picking up a pair of sticks. Rich
@@cloudview747 Thanks, I just realized that it may have first sounded like I was being negative or critical of BR, but I wasn't. I certainty meant what I said in a good way but when I get a chance, maybe I should rephrase my original statement. Rich
Talent, motivation, rhythm, creativity, sense of timing.....Buddy had all of these and knew how to put them all together. That's why I consider him as being the all-time greatest drummer who ever lived. I have been drumming off and on for 70 years.
This is by far the most expressive Buddy Rich solo ive ever seen. And seen and heard a truck load. Conceptually he is incredibly advanced and his approach to melody is uncanny. He plays and develops themes in his solo as dramatic as occurs in the music. In this case , the poly rhythmic West Side Story. This is an open solo and if one sings what Buddy plays theyll realize the depth of Buddy's conception and supremely musical prowess. I do think that the listener can be completely absorbed listening to this. I know 'Iam . I also know that people forget as in latin music . The drums are also featured as other soloists are. In the singer song writer or trubadour tradtion from from folk to pop , this type of approach, from a once American popular music, strikes as different as sweet from sour. Since in those cases the drums are strictly accompaniment . Jazz the truth is a uniquely American art form and the drumset . Created here in this country. Lets listen and be swept away by the great plot lines and master work as grand as any other classical music. For me and for millions of fans worldwide over his 50 yr pro history across generation , Buddy's statements are only sweet .
I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Mr. Rich twice live at Disneyland in LA, sitting on the floor not 25 feet away! Extraordinary! But this is truly breathtaking! And kudos to the camera work. At one point you can even see the sweat dripping from Buddy’s nose. I’m not a drummer, so I can only imagine the endurance, strength and concentration necessary to accomplish something like this performance! Hell, who needs an orchestra? Ultimately all I can say is a heartfelt HOLY SHIT, and thank God for video!
Met him 4 times on his uk tours. Always a smile a joke and some good advice. Was a tough band master from a time where being hardcore was the norm. RIP BUDDY x
Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I remember telling my dad about Neil Peart and how great he was and one of the best, his reply, was, "Oh? listen to this..." He took me to see the Buddy Rich band back in in the late 70's. I was in awe.
My story is SO similar. I was just a teenager, learning to play the drums, and into everything Rock. My father, himself a drummer, kept bugging me to listen to his Buddy Rich albums. FINALLY I took his advice and sat down to really listen, to the Blues Caravan album and the Swingin New Big Band album. Like you, I was completely in awe. Changed the direction of my musical life instantly.
@@cloudview747 Yeah, my dad grew up in the 30 and 40's so Big Band was his thing, so I was introduced to Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, etc. growing up. Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich were like the guitar Gods of the the 70's and 80's.

WoW he is the best ever>>> gets more sounds out of just hi-hats & a snare well & the Bass drum than most with a Neil peart setup~i was rt in back of him as my mom took me to a big shopping mall i was like 12 or so so it was around 1970~i played as she rented me sets so i was in heaven~ `
Absolutely phenomenal the stick control is simply brilliant, i know the likes of Neil and John (RIP chaps) were phenomenal too in their own right but Buddy was in a league of his own.
He was very fast... yet had extremely well developed precision, and economy of movement. His drumming was never muddy sounding, even as close together as his beats were... His timing was always flawlessly impeccable.
Those snare to floor tom moves at around the 6:05 mark are just astounding. And the whip-cream rolls are the best I've ever heard. He set the bar so high. I've been playing almost 50 years and cannot touch some of the things Buddy did. Just incredible.
This is one of the most creative solos I have seen Buddy perform live!! Awesome stick work. Buddy was such a phenomenal rudimentary player as well as intensely musical at the same token.
takes your breath away~ his frenetic tapping on the rims and edges along with his supreme control of volume and intensity are so hypnotic you feel like he is picking your sonic Lock - dialing in so many intricate combinations of complex rhythms, colors and nuances. This is the kind of music that can actually transform your DNA in my sonic opinion

Always learn so much watching Buddy the master play. However, Philly Joe Jones is one of my favorites when it comes to solos and snare technique. Wish there were more videos of him on RUclips.
Never seen this solo before... i have been watching a lot of drummers lately and thinking "wow" that was brilliant or the best, but this puts it all back in perspective, there are amazing , absolutely brilliant drummers and then there is Buddy Rich, the GOAT!!
This is EXACTLY how I feel! There are many amazing, absolutely brilliant drummers, and I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate them. But then there's Buddy Rich. One Of A Kind!
One of the best recording of Buddy's snare drum - in isolation- I've ever heard. The other drums are much less audible, which (from a mixing standpoint sucks but) really brings out the precision in Buddy's playing. Some of the camera shots are unique as well. Too bad someone's head got in the way of viewing Buddy's left hand at a particularly intriguing part of the solo. That would've been nice too see.
Agreed. Poor miking I'm afraid, you really can't even hear the toms, just the snare. None the less, a fascinating solo and his left hand...aagh, just incredible.
Yes, but...I think the snare was too choked. One or two turns to the right and it would have sung more and been more liquid. I know--go complain. The crowd rightly applauded when he shifted from snare to floor tom, back and forth. That's, um, hard, for us mortals.
@@ellisweiner6405 I know what you are saying about the snare, but that only applies to mortal beings. if you are putting on an exhibition of precision sticking from Mars, you crank it as tight as it will go.
Somehow those snares being so so tight did NOTHING to expose his technique as imperfect. I can just tell my playing would sound like CRAP on that snare! But- I gotta say my favorite part of this solo was that incredibly infectious grooving he was channeling near the start. Just killing!
HIS SNARE ROLLS ARE LIKE A CHAIN GUN ON A NAVAL DESTROYER. MY GOD. THE BEST DRUMMER THIS WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. I WAS MESMERIZED BY HIM WHEN I WAS 6. AND HE SPAWNED ANOTHER ONE OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS EVER, WHOS LEGEND SPANS THE GLOBE AS WELL.... "NEIL PEART" GOD REST THEIR SOULS.

He paved the way for other drummers that came after him.
I think he is the greatest that’s ever lived. There are so many great drummers. I just think that he has so many techniques he employs and he makes the drums sing. It like intense improvisation. No other drummer is on this level imho.
Buddy was known to have a temper and berate members of his band(s) So I can imagine the guy might have said something not quite as worshipful as Mr. Rich expects nd now he's going, "Look at this mother F-----r. This is the best you'll ever see. You don't even belong on the same bandstand with me."
Absolutely no hesitation not even one imperfection in his taps at such crazy speed & he's still relaxed . Amazing control & chops unmatched til this day .

I love your comments.

Another astounding display of creativity, skill, concentration, stamina, coordination, musicality, and flawless execution by the master. He did things on a nightly basis that can never be duplicated. Pure spontaneity and inspiration.
+William Taylor I couldn't have said it better! Glad you like this as much as I do.
" STAMINA ++ This guy had till he was 50 at least !! ( he lived to be 69)
He almost never looks at this drums when playing, his stare is in the same spot. I know Neil Peart is a huge fan and I can head some of Neil in the solo. Buddy must have gotten more chick than the singer, oh wait, there wasn't one LOL Amazing stick control!
... while wearing a tie and blazer...
I know!
Trex 100
And he could still do it at age 65
Most excellent point there Trex!! My thought precisely! I wonder how awesome and even MORE he could do in shorts, arms free in a sleeveless well worn T-Shirt!?!?
Put some famous rock drummers in a sportcoat, slacks, and tie...I'D BET MONEY THEY'D FALTER AND ERR!!!!!!!!!!
Trex100 class
Nothing memorable at all
I’ve just finished watching this clip and my ears are ringing what a fantastic musician he was
I like it that you say fantastic musician, not just fantastic drummer.
Wow! What a breathtaking performance, I actually stopped breathing.
😮 🙂
This man was from outer space. There were drummers and then there was Rich. Unbelievable speed and accuracy.
Rich
Understood!
Add in the concentration and outright PHYSICAL skill, plus the muscle memory developed over his lifetime, and......well....you just heard the results.
I wholeheartedly agree.
Authority in Drumming. Hats Off to Buddy Rich...🥁
One of the best solos from Buddy on film, ever. Excellent sound too....
So glad you like this as much as I do.
Totally agree!
That's funny because i thought the opposite. GREAT playing as always but the camera ANGLES sucked.
@@cloudview747 Could you perhaps let us know your top few filmed solos of Buddy’s? Thank you.
@@marcgregoryneville Do you mean, my favorites of all the Buddy drum solo videos that I personally have posted?
Sounds like you like this as much as I do!
I am so glad you appreciate this!
Met him 4 times on his uk tours. Always a smile a joke and some good advice. Was a tough band master from a time where being hardcore was the norm. RIP BUDDY x
Saw him live in 79 ,blew me away ,I was 19 ,sold my drumkit within 2 weeks and got a new one thirty years later
Buddy blew SO MANY of us away!!
It's the journey and not the destination. Buddy told all of us to get back on the horse and have fun....
Like Jojo said, every solo was on the edge, life or death, with Buddy...
And then there was Neil Peart becoming an acolyte of Buddy's, I think during the 90's.
and you wonder why he is the best drummer in the world. he always has been and always will be...
Those of us who got to experience
this freak of nature live and up close-
as I did several times - will never
stop being amazed and inspired by
the breadth and artistry of his ability.
R.I.P champ !
Thanks for posting this excellent
example of it.
My pleasure.
And I could't agree more about the incredible experience of seeing him live and up close. Jaw-dropping. Completely overwhelming. At times almost hard to believe that what I was witnessing was real!
I wish I could do ANYTHING in my life half as well as Buddy Rich could play the drums. True Masters make whatever craft they have perfected look easy.
He might've been a scary egomaniac, but he shredded. That snare was tight. He was a magician.
What great audio. Of course, no one can come close to Buddy on his solos.
+drummerman Glad you like this solo as much as I do!
He was A legend even to this day 2020 some of his beats still cannot be matched at One time for over 15 year he was the world’s greatest drummer. He is gone now he’s a legend that that will last throughout all time.
👍 😊
WoW he is the best ever>>> gets more sounds out of just hi-hats & a snare well & the Bass drum than most with a Neil peart setup~i was rt in back of him as my mom took me to a big shopping mall i was like 12 or so so it was around 1970~i played as she rented me sets so i was in heaven~
`
Absolutely phenomenal the stick control is simply brilliant, i know the likes of Neil and John (RIP chaps) were phenomenal too in their own right but Buddy was in a league of his own.
Not too many drummers can make a drum solo mystifying. Thanks Buddy, for carrying the torch for us & for the inspiration.
:-)
He was very fast... yet had extremely well developed precision, and economy of movement. His drumming was never muddy sounding, even as close together as his beats were... His timing was always flawlessly impeccable.
Oh yeah.
Those snare to floor tom moves at around the 6:05 mark are just astounding. And the whip-cream rolls are the best I've ever heard. He set the bar so high. I've been playing almost 50 years and cannot touch some of the things Buddy did. Just incredible.
Welcome to the group! An extremely large group, to be sure.
Mind-blowing sensational....for all æternity.....BRAVO from Acapulco!
Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant to the power of 1000. Have met him times. How often do you meet someone from another planet
i dig the director....the most insightfull video on Buddys grip...very top performance as always
Buddy was one the fastest and most technical drummers ever. Unsurpassed talent !!
This is one of the most creative solos I have seen Buddy perform live!! Awesome stick work. Buddy was such a phenomenal rudimentary player as well as intensely musical at the same token.
I miss him. 😢
Buddy is missed by us all in the jazz and music world as well. No one has ever set the bar so high. He is entertaining elsewhere.😇
Behold, the beautiful Drumming bewitchery of Buddy Rich , at play with his own riffs.Stunning.
Yes!!
takes your breath away~ his frenetic tapping on the rims and edges along with his supreme control of volume and intensity are so hypnotic you feel like he is picking your sonic Lock - dialing in so many intricate combinations of complex rhythms, colors and nuances. This is the kind of music that can actually transform your DNA in my sonic opinion
What MysteryZenSide2 said!!
Budddy was so above every other drummer!! He could swing a band like nobody's business! Then.....his epic drum solos every night were a showcase of talent, technique, musicalty adn everything tha goe s with those!!! The best ever!!! No one has become his equal......yet.
THE BEST IN THE WORLD BUDDY RICH ...................
irelan long.......couldn’t agree more. Buddy was and will always remain the BEST.
He’s all right, modern drummers would destroy him now
Always learn so much watching Buddy the master play. However, Philly Joe Jones is one of my favorites when it comes to solos and snare technique. Wish there were more videos of him on RUclips.
U mean papa jo?
Simply matchless!! Like they say one of a kind. There are a lot of great ones out there. Buddy was simply the best!!
Oh how true! One of a Kind indeed.
Awesome drummer. Best of all time.
Ellis Weiner...One or two turns....to the LEFT. 😉
And he does it all in a suit and tie!!
Has there been anyone that compares with this guy since? Will there ever?
The greatest. His left hand snare work is legendary!
Oh how right you are!
Never heard this fella before in my life but now I want some drums. The highest level of musicality and technique 😨
If you are not 3 years' old at this time the fantasy will more than likely not be a reality. Buddy was Baby Traps. It was his FIRST language.
Loved the flams! He was the best. Without question.
My dad and my brother were both drummers and when I was 5 or 6 my dad had buddy rich and gene Krupa on the old reel tapes and I started listening to them and I had a great education in playing drums and I still play but buddy was the best drummer in his generation. He paved the way for other drummers that came after him.
I think he is the greatest that’s ever lived. There are so many great drummers. I just think that he has so many techniques he employs and he makes the drums sing. It like intense improvisation. No other drummer is on this level imho.
And almost all whilst having a staring competition with the bloke sitting next to him!
holy shit dude ...i'm dying noticing that no change in facia expression the whole time .. he's staring that dude down like "FUCK YOU I AM GOD"
It would be funny if the guy started making faces at buddy. We all know that wouldn't end well.
It's my band...😂😂😂
...And I'm the Queen of England
Buddy was known to have a temper and berate members of his band(s) So I can imagine the guy might have said something not quite as worshipful as Mr. Rich expects nd now he's going, "Look at this mother F-----r. This is the best you'll ever see. You don't even belong on the same bandstand with me."
The best of the best. A serious badass in every way. Totally dominates Jazz drummimg
syncopated shots from every angle, speed, variation, with that simply devastating L-hand constantly on the go...
Fantasket greatest ever
Absolutely no hesitation not even one imperfection in his taps at such crazy speed & he's still relaxed . Amazing control & chops unmatched til this day .
👍

On peut se poser la question de cette coordination des systèmes nerveux et musculaires ?! Le hasard ? Même pas improbable.
When you here thunder ,,it's buddy in heaven ,letting go , absolutely the best 👍
