The man is conveying the infinite exploration of his instrument. The variation in sounds from a myriad of points and tension combinations that form a calculus of music, not just a change from cymbal to tomtom to snare to base but from tip to toe and from center to edge and from rim to shell. It's like he's urging the musician to explore and not just settle for the obvious. It's the genius of jazz.

the whole damn thing is hard to belive
i just think he was a very fast learner and very creative.
A fast learner with an aggressive powerful edge, also add the fact this guy played vertualy 24-7 give or take, (his practice was on the job) he also sucked up all the chops from all the drummers around at the time and made it his own, put all these elements together and you get a hell of a drummer
BigBill Lucas Very true. Buddy said he didn't have time to practice. He was always on the job.
Scott Reed And Jojo Mayer says the same thing now - these guys get to that point in their career when they are always on the road and playing all the time. They simply don't have time to practice on their own. Amazing solo. All his solos are great but this may be his best.
I read that Rich himself couldn't explain what he did or how.
Obviously...the greatest percussionist to ever walk on this Earth.
easy now kemosabe, many of todays drummers are lightyears ahead
@@strabo1 Name one.
@@strabo1 Name one my friend
@@strabo1 Aric Improta is close. Not even on buddy’s level though, perhaps more modernized in some aspects. He is probably one of the most promising, however to say he is lightyears ahead is more than a stretch to say the least
@@skateraptor12 always the same thing, buddy was good yes but he should be in a marching band.so many of todays drummers are on a different level.
His solo's made him famous..the way he drove a band made him a legend!
Very well defined. Should be the epitome for understanding, without all the comments and questions...
Not to diminish the rest of the comment, which absolutely deserves some recognition, but that second sentence is quite possibly the most pretentious nonsense in the history of RUclips comments. Bravo, sir. Bravo.
ez a legtechnikásabb dobolás amit valaha hallottam. hihetetlen 🙂. a legjobb dobosokat nem a rockbandákban kell keresnünk hanem a JAZZ-ben 🙂
he is better with just a hi-hat than anyone is with a full kit.
Not half as good as an intellectual drummer like Max Roach, search for his solos at "Mr. Hi Hat Man"...
+whity72 "intellectual" drummer? :D Just because Roach had an unorthodox approach to drumming, that doesn't make it "intellectual".
Buddy Rich (One Hit-Hat) VS. Dave Weckl (Full Drum Kit)
Hmm, don't think so ;)
... and with one hand
@george nolte Max Roach and Buddy were both geniuses of their craft. I agree with your statement.
My late father loved this man and that's why he took up jazz drumming all those yrs ago.gene krupa and louie Bellson where his other favourites but buddy was his man.i was young at the time when buddy rich died in 1987 but I can remember my father falling to his knees when he heard the news of his passing and he was in bits about it so it tells me my father loved this man.he used to drive my mum crazy as he would play drum Solos of buddy gene and louie all day long and it was loud as my dad had bad hearing.but what a legend buddy was.
Buddy Rich just shat on every drunmer's dreams
This is pure concentration by a consummate professional who is trying to play his best for the audience who most assuredly appreciates what he is doing. He is doing what he does best, which is giving the music his all to the best of his ability. What he is doing is very emotional as well as technical. It all comes from the heart, and that's always what Rich possessed beyond all other drummers...physical technical abilities and all the experience of playing with all the great jazz musicians from the 30's 40' 50's and 60's. He was a very gifted emotional jazz musician.
I’m impressed by many drummers, but amazed by only one.
Outstanding as always.way to go BUDDY
truly a master....
PERFECTION!
My favourite drummers. Ian Paice Carl Palmer ( both respected by Buddy ) John Bonham Simon Philips. And a few more! But this solo is insane no one can touch this
And Gabriel Parra.
Chester Thompson.
And the very underrated Danny Seraphine
The drummers you mentioned got a lot of they're ideas for they're solos from this man.
My grandfather played with him not only that my grandfather was a huge musician as well. This is what I grew up listening too ❤. 46 now
He is absolutely the best drummer. So fast and so long with perfect technic.
By far the greatest percussionist of all time. His energy and snare perfection is incredible.
UNBELIEVABLE!!! UNIQUE!!! INCREDIBLE!!! INCOMPARABLE!!! A GENIUS!!!!👏👏👏
The greatest drummer humanity may ever produce;..........Anyone ever realize that one reason all those old rock groups had such great drummers ( John Bonham, Kieth Moon, Mitch Mitchell,Greg Lake,Ian Paice ,etc) was because this guy was the standard they were all trying to live up to.
jeffrey hinkel Greg Lake bassist Carl Palmer drummer
Exactly!
Pretty sure Greg Lake played an instrument other than the drums.
nope not even close to being the best..
You can hear the sound influence as well ! Bonham and Paice for sure
Par excellence in Paris he is smirking with confidence
You would think it was humanly impossible to achieve such drumming speed , but he we have it before our very eyes, this man is unique in the drumming world and in my opinion will never be equaled .
Nekrutman has the potential.
Es discípulo de buddy.....!!!!
I had the privilege to watch Buddy live on a couple of occasions at the Davenport Theatre, Stockport, to this day iv never seen an equal,
The master of the drums there’s no other like him
My 9th grade drummer son saw him in concert in 1984...got to meet him backstage, talk awhile and had a drum head signed by Buddy Rich which he still has.
People need to see Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa drum off . Sammy Davis " judging" ha...different styles but Krupa so magic you could watch all day. Both greatest!
🎶💫 🥁💫🎶
I have been hearing about this guy since i was a kid..50 years ago...him and the Beatles..very rare talent..wow....!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
