Wow. Lionel Hampton FEELS his jazz music. HE LIVES IT. Wow x wow. Miss these folk like him and Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner, etc.
Ya gotta love how he gets the audience into it. My guess is most of the audience didn't grow up listening to this music so he's doing something special to get them moving and grooving.
he did both...but because it is improvisational...SINGING the BLUES...Blues has words....its jazz...he also did blues...cause he was nice like that...that is why Kenny G is NOT a real jazz musician...because his stuff is recorded and played note by note...a little lesson...those slaves created something good with that call and response in the fields...
I'm 18 again! Fantastic to hear this from my teenager years...........wow....I'm still impressed......goosebumps! Thank you for posting this!

I saw him in the early 40's in St. Louis when you could lean on the stage. No trouble, just good times.

LOL I saw "Newport Jazz Festival" and could not understand why every single person had brown hair! Must be one of those one-race-only countries.
They're probably Japanese that came to watch Newport Jazz Festival in person, many jazz aficionados there.
Dette musik er lige til øllet - men på en pragtfuld måde.
Sounds more like blues vibes to me than jazz vibes.
And you can look at his face my I bet he has been though a whole lot.
Man what great musicians. We will never have any like those in the old days again.
