Pepper Adams was a giant on the baritone sax. What a talented musician he was. And Lionel had such a wonderful way of reinterpreting classic compositions---his interpretation of "Love Is Here To Stay" is fantastic!!
I'm curious! Pepper Adams must have some abnormally large lungs for his size ! To blow like that must have been a blast to see and hear! What a talent!!
My wife and I were long time fans of Lionel Hampton in the 1950 - 1970 period . I saw him live performing on a Mediterranean cruise ship and live in midtown New York City. He seemed to just show up together with a band without advance notice. I still have recordings of his playing with Benny Goodman in the 1930s. Great talent and showmanship !
In '64, I was just a kid in a rock band that was in NYC to get pictures at a studio. I was just walking around in the early evening and got to the Metropole, where I stood outside at the window and watched Hamp up on the bar!
Fantastic listening! Lionel always had an exciting band with plenty of raw upfront energy and was more than a match for the Basie band as it always swung hard! Absolutely brilliant
Truly one of the top musical treasures this country has produced. His energy, his technique, and compositions were out of this world. And to think that a harebrained Pres. Thomas Jefferson believed fervently till the end of his hypocritical life that Black people had no musical talent nor any other intellectual abilities.
