This was truly an all-star band. I see many familiar faces - among them Pepper Adams, Charles McPhearson, Bob Wilber, Doc Cheatham, Joe Newman, Cat Anderson, Benny Powell and a great rhythm section with Ray Bryant on piano, Chubby Jackson on bass and Panama Francis on drums. I wish I was at this concert!!! Many thanks for sharing!
3 34 to 5.03...after a brilliant solo from Ray Bryant, a fabulous few minutes from Arnett Cobb, the supreme tenor man of jazz. Unbelievable tension and emotion, the like of which will be hard to find again.
Sorry, no Bob Wilber here. I thought I recognized on the saxophones Earl Warren (lead alto) and the underrated Paul Moen as the other tenor saxophone. I did a little research and I got it right. So: Lionel Hampton (vib) & his Big Band - Jimmy Maxwell, Joe Newman, Cat Anderson, Doc Cheatham (tpt) John Gordon, Benny Powell, Kai Winding (trb) Earle Warren (as) Charles Mac Pherson (as) Arnett Cobb (ts ) Paul Moen (ts) Pepper Adams (bar) Ray Bryant (p) Billy Mackel (g) Chubby Chackson (b) Panama Francis (d).
Two Giants that have swung their way across all jazz horizons to everyone’s delight that heard them. Did anyone ever give more bang for a buck than that and did anyone ever get more bang for their buck than that. I doubt it?. Alastair

There are not superlatives enough in the dictionary to give Mr. Lionel Hampton his due as being one of America's greatest contributors to the art of Jazz, blues, swing and pop music. He among others like Ellington, Goodman, Basie, Gillespie, Kenton and Davis set standards that made this music genre highly sought after, copied, followed, and reproduced worldwide.
I was at that Jazz Festival in Nice 1978 Hamp played Hamps Boogie Woogie which my father co-wrote and I was pushed on the stage by Roland Hanna because he saw I was getting ready to cried because my father had just died the previous July 1977 , Hamp introduced me to the crowd and they went wild Carole Hallam
