Lionel Leo Hampton (April 20, 1908 - August 31, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, bandleader and actor. Hampton worked with jazz musicians from Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.

Great performance. I wonder what was the occasion.? And who would have thought of this unique blend of jazz plus a quality classical orchestra ! It worked out so well !

Was the tenor solo from a member of the orchestra or one of Lionel''s sax players? Was the solo expected if an orchestra member. No matter, it was well done - no scaling.
Lionel appeared unkowing of the sax player. Any insight as to the origin of the player and was it rehearsed?

who was the guy playing the double bass? He is great. Loved his facial expressions.
I love how uncomfortable the conductor looks. Lionel was unpredictable because he loaded and got wrapped up in the music. So musical conventions meant little. He was like a young man when he played. Genius.
But in a classic orchestra where musical conventions matter, Lionel would be a challenge. Lol.
