As a teen-ager, I saw Hamp with Benny Goodman, way back in '63. What fabulous musicians! Hampton was a part of Benny's famous 'Octet'. Lionel was such a piece of work! The music, the soulful grunts, the guy was a performer like few others!
Lionel Hampton the greatest vibraphonist. Great to see him with a full Orchestra behind him. My father took me to see him perform in Charleston West Virginia when I was a kid, have loved listening to him ever since

Love Lionel. I went to the University of Idaho, home of the Lionel Hampton School of Music. What an inspiration he was to so many artists and musicians.
I never had the chance to watch him perform in person. I did however, meet him in a jazz club in Seattle when I was in my early twenties. What a nice guy. RIP
I was fortunate enough to see him, and I am a bit proud of it. In a small town close to Hamburg called Pinneberg, you wouldn’t expect to find a musician of that caliber and his big band - but there he was: Lionel Hampton! The entertainment was marvelous. If I remember correctly, it was in late spring of 1990. I did a little research about the event - it was indeed a memorable occasion. Lionel Hampton performed in Pinneberg on May 20, 1990. The concert took place in a large hall at the traditional Hotel 'Cap Polonio.' Given the venue's historical charm and the event's significance, it’s no wonder it left such a lasting impression.

My H.S. music teacher invited him to do guest appearance and small performance for us back in the early 80's in NYC. He was old then but gave us a lively performance. Now I realize he was a true original legend from the days of the Harlem Renaissance.
Love me some Lionel ! I'm a record digger and there's no greater joy than to suddenly start hearing vibes coming from the Goodwill record rack when I pull up on a Hampton album.

Formidable Lionel qui a su donner à la génération, au sortir de l'abominable guerre, l'espérance de la vie retrouvée!! Et quel talent avec un tel dynamisme et des sonorités inouÏes sorties de son vibraphone: Super
All you music affacianatos, the great Lionel Hampton, the n the latter part of his career, playing Hamp's Boogie Woogie. Up on on your feet and start movin' and groovin'. Doesn't get much better than this. And unusual arrangement with FULL orchestration.
I saw Lionel in college when he was doing the college tour circuit. What a great performer and you could tell that he was genuinely having fun while making music. Not just going through the motions.
Lionel Hampton was a excellent percussionist and composer. In Harlem New York as a kid several times I saw his big band perform and he tour a drum set to pieces. Excellent big band drummer, then he go over the piano and then xylophone. Lionel Hampton is the only man I know that could play right behind Count Basie. In which that is almost impossible to do.
Biggest "quartet" I've ever seen! 😯 It's obvious that Lionel's talent was waning at this time in his life. He simply kept the beat and hardly played those vibes at all while the pianist carried the main part of Hamp's Boogie. MUCH more vibrant in his early days. I love those days!
When I heard 'Hamps Boogie Woogie on the radio in 1972 it turned me into a Lionel Hampton fan as well as a Jazz lover. I've been both ever since and I had the privilege of seeing him live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank.

My dad thought me to play this when I was seven. I am 47 now and still when I am down this always helps. Always!

Lionel does one of the best big band Boogie Woogie
I reckon the pianist is about 30 years younger than Lionel but the younger man has all the grey hair. Lots of joy in this concert. Marvellous.
