- Gene Krupa and Papa Joe Jones talk about mentors ,drums and technique. Rare interview wth Gene at his home in Yonkers and Papa Joe teaching at Frank Ippolitoes Professional Percussion Center NYC.
I saw Gene Krupa when I was around nine years old. My Dad took me to the Metropole Cafe and I was literally in heaven! Since then, he’s always been my hero!
Jo Jones was the one. He and Krupa are the ones to listen to.
How I enjoy Watching Papa play. He has so much fun enjoying himself. A legend.
"I don't care who you are, you gotta start with the drums" --god damn right. and nobody comes close to his mastery of brushes, even the other greats.
Papa Jo is as good as it gets.
I Met Joe and my teacher played with both. Played with Gene two days before he passed at Gene's house. They were good friends.
a privilege to know these clips.
Thank You!
Ed Smithson
These gentleman are masters and it's a treat watching them.
The absolute joy of playing
Papa Jo Jones look like he cookin breakfast the way he play. dang! whiskin them eggs and slicin that bacon. Cookin with gas Baybeee!
100% cookin" all times !
to have Joe Jones as a teacher is priceless
Fabulous, PapaJoe always swings like mad and always looks like having a ball doing it. I saw an interview with Buddy Rich who adopted Krupa’s set up , and kept it that way throughout his career
Poppa Jo Jones..the king of the drums!!
So inspiring to watch these gents; R.I.P.
Papa Joe was the happiest drummer ever! He was also the essence of swing in my opinion. Basie all the way! What a great era for jazz. Their time was indeed the greatest.
Dear God! Steve Gadd is my idol. Now I will add Papa Jo Jones as well. That brush technique! OMG. How lucky if you got a chance to see and tutored by him.
One of the true legends - a giant - a King. And still limber & graceful in his later years.
Love Gene and Joe. What a cool video!
wonderful drummers in this fragile world......
Thanks much for posting this. Invaluable drumming and jazz history.
The drummer taking a lesson with Papa Joe at 3:05, the great Richie Goldberg.
still love both!!
that was great video.. The young kid ws amazing...where is he NOW?? lol. Imagine Jo Jones giving you lesson...Pretty cool!
Amazing. Jo makes it look like so much fun
Gene Krupa's musical philosophy is so underrated with regards to being aware of the audience getting restless/bored of listening to an extended drum solo. Man knows how to entertain a crowd.
That brush work at the end was nothing short of AMAZING....
This is so awesome to watch this footage
While I think about it, my grandfather was pretty damn good on drums. I never truly appreciated his talent at the time, too busy listening to rock, his brushwork sticks in my mind as being wholly sympathetic, expressive and able to convey attack at the same time.
Who is your grandfather?
This is one of those things that you watch and marvel at what human brains, and human bodies, can do.
Damn! his brush technique is awesome.
I just sent this to Kenny Washington and he told me it's NOT HIM AS THE STUDENT in this video!! Just letting you know.
The drummer's name was Shelton Gary.
ESSA ESSE VD É DE UMA MAGIA ÚNICA. PORQUE SÃO DOS MAGOS DO JAZZ NO MESMO VD. A NOSTALGIA, O LADO RETRÔ MOSTRANDO O ESTÚDIO COM OS ALUNOS E O AMBIENTE TOTALMENTE ANTIGO E AINDA VIRGEM DE CULTURA E MALÍCIA. FANTÁSTICO.

Mint footage! Fantastic!!
This is deeply cool, Thank you..
Genios los amamos! Grandes de nuestra hermosa historia de la batería.
love em both
let the the stick play...instead of the stick play you.......words of the master to the apprentice!
Elliot Steinwedell.. The grip is amazing
Papa Jo is the most beautiful cat ever ... my god
These guys lived on feel irrespective of the instrument they played sadly lost to popular music of today
If I could go back in time, I’d snap up one of those beautiful Gretsch kits!
MEU IRMÃO É UMA AULA ESSA PORRA. JAZZ DESSES CARAS ERA DO CACETE, A VERDADEIRA ESCOLA, OS MESTRES DE TUDO, ERA UMA FÁBRICA DE BATERAS DA MELHOR QUALIDADE. FANTÁSTICO O VD.
The trumpetplayer is Joe Newman.
Master drummer. Top 10!
He was like a happy version of Buddy Rich
Excellent clip...
Wow, what a very fine drummer, but more notable, what a very fine Man...
Methinks Papa Joe was just being polite to Krupa. Haha
A true gentleman.
We love you Pa pa , and we love Gene!!! respect netzah
@2:07 hey it's Frank Zappa :D
Was my first thought too!!!
@@adamjeffrey3058 mee tooo lol
Inspiring
Musicality of the drums, it’s a great art, some have it, others should sell their sticks for firewood..✌🏻🥁🥁
jaw dropping artistry!
Gene Krupa. The bomb of drummers.
Have make a time machine so I can visit Joe Jones in his drum shop.
An absolute master!!!
Kenny Washington kid player.. Tony Willimas kid who watching seriously...
Tommy Flannagan (piano) and Joe Newman (tpt).. I can't see de bass player, sorry.
No, the first student was Shelton Gary.
master of masters
so wholesome
At 5:24...I didn't realize what a monster this guy was. I'd kill to play brushes like that.
So awesome
from 5:23 on, just realized I had a goofy grin the whole time :-D
Lol same dude
This man brought his lunch pail to work every day.
EXCELLENT BEAUTIFUL AMAZING SUBLIME INMORTAL 🎼 🥁 🎶 🎵
Wonderful
His roll is insane
❤❤❤❤❤
In my mind I can play just like Papa Joe Jones and Gene Krupa..... The problem is my damn hands and feet won't let me!......
One word to that . . . . WOW!! :)
Great influencer for Modern drummers today
Papa Jo!!!!!!!!
Papa lights up the room with his smile and confidence, as if to say."what about this", or "pretty good huh?". If anyone has a right to be cocky, he does. But, I do not get that impression.
Who should be number 1,2, and 3 according you?
buddy rich?
louei bellson?
gene krupa?
what's the name of the music that Jo Jones asks for the mustache man to play? It is "devil gate"? 3:09
That is Ritchie Goldberg..
His voice sounds much different than I thought it would. Also, Hank Azaria could easily play Gene Krupa in a biopic. And their drumming is good too.
They already did one. Sal Mineo played him.
He sounds like Wario but acts like Bugs Bunny lol
2:06 Young Frank Zappa at work
3:05 Young Peter Erskine practicing with Jo Jones
Is that Frank Zappa 2:07 at the desk?
First! Awesome video!
What's part 1 and 2?
Thanks for the Richie Goldberg name - new to me, but I always thought he looked pretty damned accomplished here, not some regular hobby drummer (like me)
Is the older student Steve Berrios??
What is a double gate?
❤ ❤
They must ve all had hearing problems in those days not any ear plus in sight you gotta wear ear protection all the time if you wanna keep playing and prolong your playing days
He played so damn nice.
Was the kid Tony Williams?
Sure looks like TONY and I believe TONY did study with PAPA JO but this was done in the early 70s when TONY was already an adult and quite famous in his own right!
Kid looks like a young Tony Williams though! Wonder what he’s doing today maybe if he sees this on RUclips he’ll comment
@@nealsausen4651 Thinking back, I remember Tony was mostly under Alan Dawson. I have a new theory.
Tony, that kid, Dennis Chambers, basically any of em that could really swing, were actually Papa Jo's sons.
They didn't call him Papa Jo for nothin!
@@everythingismediocre : Yeah that’s interesting!
The young drummer was Shelton Gary.
@@jga59 Ahh cool. Thank you!
At 4:00, what he says sounds like something that Roger Taylor of Queen would say.
Top
Whats the choon at the end anyone?😁❤👍
Who is the trumpet player 6 minutes into the clip?
☺️💙🌱
Haw. Gene, you shoulda heard the way he talked about you behind your back!
(He talked shit about everybody. It was his gimmick.)
'let the stick play instead of the stick playing you'.
If you don't smile????
What year was this?
Whose the dude with the teeth?
Salt peanuts 6:09
Who is the kid he's teaching?
Commentry by Britain's Humphrey Lyttelton.
Paul Acton thanks, I did wonder. Fondly remembered, sadly missed 😢
Gene was quite comical and clearly influenced by Papa Jo, but to say he's way behind jo and lacks the finesse of jo would be a vast understatement.
so much with so little
