Not just a great drummer, but a great musician! Listen to his phrasing, his dynamics, & his musicality. Look at his enthusiasm and joy! Not to mention, he HIT those drums!!!!
I always have had great admiration for Krupa, his speed, precision and ability to make any Band Swing with a Capital S. And he does it while wearing a coat, tie and long sleeve shirt which I know is very restrictive and uncomfortable as I also played Drums in Bands of all types of music for well over 30 years until I got too sick to play as I lost all feelin in my hands, I'm 69 now and miss playing Music every day. Thank you for a wonderful Post.
Denis May hi Dennis from Dallas Texas, very sorry to hear about the problem with your hands and giving up the drums. I am 61 and gave up playing for 20 years I am currently learning to play all over again of course I am no Krupa or Buddy Rich just a rock and roll drummer. At least we still have our ears to listen to brilliant music such as this or even Paul Revere and the Raiders LOL
Denis May I know exactly where your coming from I have the same experience, having played in bands large and small, orchestras, theatre pits even ended up as a music teacher till illness forced my retirement my hands are knackered from arthritis along with several other more serious ailments. I have only just reached the decision to let go of my Kits, keyboards recording gear and the like, as I’m just torturing myself looking at it. Fortunately all my kids are in the business so nothing will go to waste. My sincere best wishes for your future.
Carpal tunnel is hell, man. I've been there and back. If the neuro problems are up in your shoulders and/or neck, I've been there, too. The pain alone is vicious, let alone giving up so many things you love. Part of your problem with the restrictive coat and shirt may have been the fact that almost everyone buys their clothing ready-made these days. If you had been able to afford "bespoke" garments, some of your problems (especially the coat thang) might have been solved. But hey -- who, other than the top 1%, could afford bespoke suits after 1970?
My parents had the original Columbia 78-rpm record of the last tune, "Leave Us Leap". I about wore it out as a kid. Nice to see Gene and his great band performing it. Thanks for posting this.
This is what I love and respect gene Krupa for. Gene the gentlemen always surrounded himself with great musicians. Notice the clean cut way those men were dressed. No cut off jeans. Tattoos. Blasting amps. Gene was more than a flashy drummer he and his fellow musicians put good all American big band jazz in the forefront
Getting a strong Ken M vibe here but have to ask: Weren't exactly all big bands dressed like this at that time? Or do you mean that other big bands in the 40s were performing in cut off jeans and tattoos? Would love to see that!
I don´t know who you replied to, but I won´t hold my breath til you`ll get an answer... btw... I literally can´t breath anymore, `cause I can´t stop laughing... THX to you I´ll have a wonderful rainy sunday afternoon listening to vinyl and going to enjoy every little bump and scratch on these fantastic witnesses/evidences in music`s history.
the way they are dressed is less significant than what the rest of that rhythm section is doing with limited amplification. look at that pianist go! he gets one solo on the last tune. seems like he coulda been in the spotlight more
GENE WAS THE BEST OF THE BEST EVER TO PLAY THOSE DRUMS WHILE TWIRLING HIS STICKS LIKE NO OTHER DRUMMER EVER !!!!! CLASS , STYLE , AND MOVEMENTS LIKE NO OTHER !!!!! HMM , < BUDDY WHO > ??????
some where in the Twilight Zone! lives a Man name Gene Krupa who's Drumming will change the world as we know it for example ELP Carl Pamer and many more you will see .
Interesting how they cut between the prerecorded parts for the band and the live parts for Krupa's solos. I understand that during this time it was tough to get the sound right for a whole big band in a film so they played the record over the sound system and everyone pretended to play. But you can't do that with a drum solo, it's almost impossible for a drummer to remember every detail of a solo and it would look fake, so they did it live. I've seen this with Buddy Rich solos of this era also.
Not only a great drummer and gentleman, but very loyal to Slingerland, at a time when so many other drummers from that era, changed endorsements depending on deals.... a bit like DW these days.
@@nista67 Gretsch and Rogers brands although both bought and sold a few times over the years are still in the drum business and On November 25, 2019 it was announced that DW Drums had taken over ownership of the Slingerland brand from Gibson.
Wow..Gene Krupa what a player and is so dynamic.
Not just a great drummer, but a great musician! Listen to his phrasing, his dynamics, & his musicality. Look at his enthusiasm and joy! Not to mention, he HIT those drums!!!!
Krupa influenced all drummers after him. He was born to play!
Krupa a very musical drummer. All of us learned from watching him.
You want to see a musical drummer, check out Frankie Dunlop solos on UTUBE.
Leave us Leap one of Gene's best efforts. Gene and Chick Webb first to have a big band featuring the drums. His timing was right on.
Gene Krupa. Brought drums to the foreground. The Fist and Greatest Showman Drummer ever!
I never seen a drummer have more passion than Gene.
Golden era of Jazz...the Great Gene Krupa !! One of the best drummer
Puede que la verdadera sencibilidad sea de nosotros los más viejos...
Man, there ain't nothing like watching Krupa play! Would love to see someone restore this film and bring it up to HD.
Gene was the reason the drums elevated from the pit. Musical genius.
What a joy to watch, GK was always my favourite.
Truly a phenomenon. All others stand on his shoulders.
Absolutely phenomenal, love the musicality of this man.

Gene Krupa has always been the drummer for the band, Buddy wanted the limelight.
Comparisons are odious. They were very different animals and these differences were reflected in their performances. Enjoy both.

RIP!
GOD HAS ALL OF THE BEST DRUMMERS

Leave Us Leap...man, talk about a great ending. Hard to play.

And you can tell they are all having.

Blimey that’s a wobbly classical hussy recording!
GK's band was one if not the hottest band of the early forties to my mind.(and ears). "Leave us Leap" just jumps. Oh and thanks for this posting.

There is something so sexy about the drums and drummer! I love G. Krupa and B. Rich along with L. Bellson! These were the greats.
The most influential drummer of the 20th Century. End of story.
Wow!!! cracking snare drum sound..!! King of the Rimshot!! : )
Master of the use of stick-accent (not rimshot)
Yo that dude just Gene Krupa'd all over that track!
Carolyn Grey, absolutely gorgeous and one of the best of those husky-voiced, swinging jazz singers of the 40's.
Yup Gene was Buddy's influence and for most of the drummers back in that era ~!
pow pow pow pow....babada babada boom!
some where in the Twilight Zone! lives a Man name Gene Krupa who's Drumming will change the world as we know it for example ELP Carl Pamer and many more you will see .
Go gene go!!!
GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first solo at 1:50 is not live, watch closely and you'll see he is still on the snare when tom notes are heard.
The greatest
WOW

Too true. Sadly, Slingerland, Gretsch, Rogers, and quite a few others, are no more.

Yes
Gene at his peak...he slowed down later with age and ill health.
Only the Americans could swing like this.
There must be a way to clean out the hiss from this recording?
Who playes the alto solo in the first tune? I think it´s not Tommy Lucas, who playes in the Trio...
gene quill
Benny Goodman?
Why cut one of the numbers?
