Hey everyone! In this video we'll be working with the plugin Joysticks and Sliders again. But today, we're going to create multiple joysticks on one face and I'll also show you how to create a slider. Enjoy! :)

If you are always struggling with the annoying automatic bezier keyframe when creating animation on the position property... go to the preferences panel and activate the "Default Spatial Interpolation to Linear" in the General Tab.

Great! I was struggling with how to animate different elements on the same head rig using Joysticks and Sliders at the same time (like the mouth and eyebrows). It was really helpful to see how you parented the facial features to nulls to attach these elements to the joysticks, but then leaving their transform properties free for seperate sliders.

This is great! Thank you very much! May I know do you rigged the characters for every animation or sometimes you will just edit the path without rigging? Coz the rigging part seems consume a lot of time too.
Thanks! I rig characters like this all the time. It does take a little time for the setup but I always win it back when animating. It's so easy to create nice movements when rigging and you don't have to move every element every time you want the character to do something. I gotta say, in this video it's quite an expansive rig. Mostly I only do the basic head movement rig and animate the 'emotions' with the eyebrows and mouth manually with path edits. Cheers! :)

Very cool - everything worked fine! But when I put the face onto my character (in another composition), all joysticks are gone... tried to use "move slider to parent comp" but didn't success. Is there a tutorial on that? Thank you very much!!

Hi Bas! I am not able to adjust the Path of the eyebrows after I did the initial Head Movement rigging. I redid and eyeballed your process several times but to no avail...can you advise? Much appreciated!
Hello, is there any way I can animate eyebrows, when my character is in raster, so I cant move the paths? Maybe using multiple layers or something. Thanks!
Can you use duik bassel and this plugin at same time?
I wonder if you could help me. Once I apply sticks and sliders to a set, whatever is in that set I can't edit the paths anymore to make other animations. I can only add other sets of sticks and sliders to the same character using the rotation, location and scale but the paths are not editable and convert to Bezier path is grayed out. Could you point me in the right direction?
Question, does this restrict your eye movements to the position keyframes you selected? Could you, for example, have the character turn his head right but move the eyes to look left?
Yeah you can do whatever you want :) The head movement and the eyes movement are independent so you can give them their own keyframes, position and timing.
How can i duplicate a joystick to reuse for another rig without having the animated keyframes on it?
I have a question I hope you could answer. On my joysticks I added a checkbox expression control. This checkbox is to turn on and of the hair layer of my rig. I then used the move joystick to parent comp. In this new comp the joystick appears and I can use it as usual, however my expression checkbox control doesn't work. It appears in my control panel (ctrl + 0), I can see it and select it, but it does not do what I programed it to do, in this case turn on and off the hair layer. Is there a solution to this? Thank you.

Hello, Adobe Character Animator is very wonderful and easy to set up but very limited. Its draggers do not have key frames making it usable mainly in simple narrative animations. This is a cocktail of rigging and animation

Hey! Fellow Dutchie here. I was wondering if there is any faster workflow for joystick n sliders to rig characters. In my current project I have to rig a ton of different characters, but rigging each and everyone of them from scratch seems a little cumbersome. Would it be possible to create some kind of skeleton with null layers that would work somewhat universally across same style character? The issue I am running into is that all my characters have different head shapes, so copying the headshape path is not really an option.
Hey Rimon! I've got to say that I do think you have to do everything manually and separate unfortunately. Because you are working with specific keyframes on different layers. Anyway, that's how I always do it so maybe I'm wrong (never tried to figure out a universal way to do it) but I think it's not possible. Too bad. Can't help you on this one unfortunately! Where can I get graphics of this style
Question: the animation is not updating for the path shapes without pressing the botton which says "update all rigged pathshape properties" but I see u are seeing the animation in realtime when u move your joystick for eyelids and other shape pathes.. how do I make all path animations play in realtime ?
as far as I know, you must use at least CC 2018 for real time update
I would like to know this also. I am on Ae 2021 and it's not realtime.
Is it possible to edit the Joystick once you've hit the create button? If I wanted to change the hair position of the face when it looks up or to the side, for example?
Yeah there is an 'unlink' button in the Joysticks and Sliders window. Select all your layers and click that button, then you can change the individual states. Then select the layers and click the 're-link' button and it's done! :)

It does work with path! It didn't in older versions but now it does :)

You can select all the layers and then in the Joysticks and Sliders window, you can 'unbind' all the layers. Then you can change things and then select them all and 'bind' them again :)

Yes you can! You can see a small green grid icon on the layers. That means that they are guide layers. So you can see them but they won't render. You can right click the layer and then turn off 'Guide Layer'. That way it will be visible when rendering :)

Hi, i download the project, but it says "The projects contains 29 expression errors", saying expression disabled.. any solution to that? i opened it with After Effect 2020
Hey! I just downloaded the file myself to see whats up and saw the expression errors too. They where in the clean slate composition. I took care of it and uploaded a new updated file so now they are gone if you download the file again :)

You can turn off the 'Guide Layer' option when right clicking on the layer :)

I tried this step but it didn't work. can you explain the problem ?
When I select all and click create joystick I get an error message saying "No properties in your selected layers are ready to be connected to a joystick. Each keyframe must be placed one frame apart" I have my keyframes at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 seconds. What am I doing wrong here?
Hey! You need to put those keyframes at the first 5 frames, not seconds. So those keyframe are all 1 frame apart, at the very beginning of your composition. I think that's the problem perhaps?
I dont know why but i can´t create a joystick for the eyebrows, I followed all of your steps. But nothing happens
Hmm that's weird. If you made all the 5 keyframe correctly it should work. Are you working with an old version of After Effects / Joysticks and Sliders? If not, you can email me a screenshot or your AE file or something so I can take a look and maybe help you out!
