I grew up with the PlayStation 1 under my tv stand and it's one of my favorite retro gaming platforms of all time...so I wanted to do SOME SORT of series on it. But considering it's more fun to talk about the esoteric side of retrogaming I decided to do a ten part series on arcade games that run on PSX hardware; the Capcom ZN-1 and ZN-2, the Namco System 10, Namco System 11 and Namco System 12, the Konami GQ and of course the Taito G-Net.
Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, John Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghi, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barobob, Steve Randall, ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane, tobemorecrazy,
Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holger Schmidt, Tim Lehner, matschmonster, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj and Dorfus!
Up next: Ehrgeiz! What is Ehrgeiz? Well its a 3D fighting game that plays way more like Power Stone on Dreamcast then Tekken or Street Fighter on PS1. But that doesn't stop it from being fun! Developed by Dream Factory and Published by Namco in ARCADES...it was then brought to the PS1 by Square Enix and it got Final Fantasy characters added into the roster! Ever want to fight as Cloud from Final Fantasy VII? Now you can! Such an odd game...but so fun all the same. Def not one you will see in any fighting game community tournaments any time soon though!

"That's 150%" just may be the best description of Ehrgeiz.
Yes its def a game that commands attention when you look at it!
I loved this game for its Master Quest mode. Such a fun game.
Its def a banger and I rarely hear people mention it
Square really were on fire in the 90s. Up until the PS2 era they had so much variety in their games. It’s really incredible.
They def has a moment for a long time
Holy Guac, this is one of my favorite games. The Adventure modes random dungeon generator is awesome.
Its a fun playtime extender for sure
Me too! I want to know EVERYTHING there is to know about this game. Sources are scarce but I've compiled a lot of my research and findings on the Ehrgeiz wiki. Specially under the development page.
I’ll have to check it out
"God Bless The Ring" remains the greatest subtitle of all time
It def leaves an impression
Whoa I’m surprised that I totally forgot about this game until now! Thanks a lot for the video, I’m taking a great trip down memory lane.
Now you gotta replay it!
I just saw them right now VGE. That's incredible . I never seen an English version before. I replied back to you on the Neo-Geo thread regarding it bro. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. 8^)
Anthony...
I’d never seen them either. I’ll check your reply
Ehrgeiz is awesome. It makes it even better knowing it has FF7 characters in it. Cloud’s my main btw.
He is way OP in a good way
I didn't get to play this one - but i loved Tobal No. 1 and Tobal 2 (especially) - i even liked PS2s The Bouncer. Also Street Fighter EX 3 had an end credits extra fight based on Final Fight i think.
Tobal is a fun time. Def a bit janky but in a good way
What a game this is VGE. I think I was the only one in the area during that time that was aware of Ehrgeiz. Too bad. Many missed out on this gem of a title bro. 8^)
Anthony..
I def think a lot of people missed out on it back in the day. Oh I’m gonna at you on Atari age. Have something to show you
Tagged you to look at a few photos I thought you’d find interesting / Neo Geo related items I’ve never seen
We need more games like Powerstone. Only game that's come close to it is The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy Video Game.
Yes it was a fun sub genre we need more of!
There was also Tom and Jerry that kind of game on Nintendo64
I used to play the Playstation version a fair bit before i got Dreamcast and PowerStone2!
The shadow mapping in the Arcade version is very unique, i have not seen any PS1 game do render-to-texture shadows! But i think geometric multiple blob shadows they have done on PS1 are a very good solution and very well done.
Japan... kind of has a collective hard-on for German language. It's not uncommon to find pieces of pop media that borrow from German language in particular.
Used to play this a lot on PlayStation. I saw it in the arcade, but didn't play it much there.
Def a game most known for being on home consoles vs the arcade for sure
Interesting but Power Stone is still my favourite, there is simple more interaction with items on stages, more random weapons.
Yes Power Stone def goes harder than this but that’s also years later so hard to truly compare
I did not know until now that Ehrgeiz was an arcade game originally.
The PS1 version is basically how everyone knows it
Ah Dream Factory, makers of my most favorite fighter on the PS1 - Tobal 2!
Tobal is janky good fun
@@VideoGameEsoterica just for reference, what is your definition of 'janky'? lol
Odd/graphically wonky/not the norm/feels experimental
Definitely reminds me of powerstone which isn't a bad thing because that game is awesome
Power Stone is a banger
The Title screen says it pretty clearly 😂
Dream Factory also made Kakuto Chojin an Xbox game nobody talks about ever and it's just the kind of Jank you love.
I do love jank
Kakuto Chojin is full round juggle combo with no effort jank.
Dream Factory is a legendary B developer
Dream Factory is always a fun time
How I don't have a copy of the Bouncer is a mystery
Gotta get one
The title is actually one of those Japanese combination words- it is comprised of “error” and “geese.” For obvious reasons.
So that means Dor and Fus stand for somthing different?
@@VideoGameEsoterica you wouldn’t know would you? I mean, you don’t even know how to check wolf gender.
Somehow you managed to make it weirder. Impressive
I've always loved Ehrgeiz, still one i love to fire up and play from time to time, yes the PlayStation arcade based games looked and sound slightly better but with the PS and Saturn I'm starting to enjoy the home ports more than the arcades, that and when this game released arcades in my area started to disappear sadly, so finding games like this were becoming far and few between
Yeah by like 2000 the only arcade where I grew up closed and I only ever saw arcade cabinets after that when traveling
I remember playing the PlayStation port of Ehrgeiz back in 2004 when I found it somewhere. And yes, this was how I got to see some snippets of FFVII for the first time, aside from some of the FMV pieces used in the ending shared for all the characters from said game, which I have seen in the intro FMV for the European Demo One Versions 6 and 7 pack-in discs. I never played, owned and grew up with FFVII when I just got the console in around May 1998, and playing Ehrgeiz and seeing the pieces of FFVII's FMVs from the aforementioned pack-in samplers was as close as how I got to FFVII, even though I was not particularly interested in that game, nor was I interested in Final Fantasy as a whole given my lack of care and passion for the JRPG genre (with perhaps the one and only exception being the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise). I did play FFVII for the first time in 2014 and took a good chunk of time to get through and see everything of what the game had, because why? You know why..... It is and has always been a very special landmark title for the console that I have always been a massive fan of since the first days of my ownership in 1998. Even if I was never a big fan of the game itself, and never am I a big fan of JRPGs in general, I still had to get through the game just so that as a die-hard PlayStation fan that I've always been, I got to experience what needed to be experienced.
In recent years though, because of my ever-growing orientation towards Asia, thanks to Steam and all of those Chinese-made adult games that emerged on the platform in the late-2010s with the landmark release of the once-widely popular and profitable match-3 puzzler known as Mirror, I started to develop some degree of sympathy towards FFVII and sometimes, I do have bad feelings of having missed out on what was the PlayStation's "Greatest Hit ever".
People with loved everything Square back in the day or not at all. I didn’t play much of their PS1 games back in the day myself
@@VideoGameEsoterica Fun fact: The music featured in the intro FMV of the PlayStation port was later used as one of the BGMs in the anime Eureka Seven. The tune is called "type theEND".
Haha very random fact. Love it
Cool game, which I don't know if it's ever been confirmed but I swear is reusing animation/mo-cap data from Tekken.
It's not quite the same but the closet to that end game credits fight is Devil May Cry 3 onwards and Bayonetta have playable fights during the credits and you even get bonus cutscenes for how well you do in them, though it's usually just regular enemies and not a unique boss
Its possibly it reused something from Tekken. You never know
0:26 you pronounce "Ehrgeiz" at its best by your first attempt :-) It translates from german to "Ambition". I never heard about this game, ever. The credits ending is really something i never saw before. fuinny idea
It’s interesting two Japanese devs chose a German title but then again Square had Einhander so it’s a thing
God Bless the Ring.
A classic subtitle
Background textures don't appear to warp on the arcade version
No it’s stable in comparison
Your pronunciation is pretty good, just a sidenote it's a German word and basically means ambition.
My german is non-existent so glad I was close
Am I crazy for remembering Tifa being a playable character in the Arcade version, or was there a sequel/updated rerelease for the arcade that added in the Final Fantasy characters?
That was the PSX release
@@VideoGameEsoterica Some Final Fantasy VII characters are unlockable on the arcade PCB, but they unlock after a specific number of days. I had a PCB with a working battery and they were playable. From what I found online searching, Cloud unlocks after 30 days, Tifa is 60, and Django might be after 120 days. Hope that helps.
Bet there is a calendar in test you can set forward for them. That’s how Battle Tryst worked
Didn't this game have a weird 'Dungeon Mode' or was that a different game?
It did on PS1
Can you actually beat the second form of Django at the end?
Apparently. But I sure can’t
@@VideoGameEsotericaIdk if you know the strat, but you have to crash the two glass boxes into Django, then take the swords from the boxes and throw them at the boss. After that, you have to collect the treasure that spawns in order to get the sword that falls down, and that’s when arcade mode is “truly beat”
I've always pronounced it "air-guys". No idea if that's right!
Works for me lol
I remember my friend telling me he had a ps game where you could fight as cloud .. i Called him a bitch ass liar .. until i came over to his house and saw it for myself ..
probably got taco shamed
@@VideoGameEsoterica nahh I just picked cloud and whooped his bitch ass until he regretted ever buying the game .. story of my life
I am lucky enough to have the PCB of this in my collection.
Really great fighting game IMO.
Yoko always makes me think Claire Redfield LOL
Fun game to have in the collection!
@@VideoGameEsoterica for sure! I was really happy when I got it as a throw in with Tekken 2!
Two great game
your pronunciation is ok. it is german it means exalting.
Interesting they chose a german word for the game
I love this game, biut feel the video is really incomplete without mentioning the extra game modes int he PS1 version.
Also, it should be mentioned that you can break the boxes and use the itens in them, and that is the key to defeat the credit´s boss and get the better ending.
That being said, Ergheiz for PS1 has one of the most stupid design decisions I have ever seem: In multiplayer all vertical stages are changed to plain square ones.
Uterly stupid.
Since it’s an arcade focused series I decided not to bring in the extra modes content
I never played this, and the original characters for the game look kind of boring to me.
Give it a shot. It’s a fun time
@@VideoGameEsoterica Speaking of DreamFactory, they[under the alternate name DreamPublishing despite being a developer] made a fighting game for the Xbox that was pulled from stores called Kakuto Chojin[due to some of the music in one stage].
