Man, I wanted Nights so bad when I was a kid but couldn't afford it. Then one day about 15 years ago I found a Saturn with Nights at a yard sale for $20. Best deal ever.
It's true! Sega Saturn is the last great 2D system and the 2D fighters and 2D shmups are OUTSTANDING! Dreamcast included some as well, but having died an early death, the Dreamcast's library isn't as extensive as the Saturn. Especially if you take the Japanese titles into account. Truly a wonderful system.
The last bit had me crying. 😁🤣 Man do I love this channel: light-hearted, comedic, and straight to the point. Luckily on ebay: I recently bought Zwei for $40 because the seller needed money. :)
Love the Saturn. It's such a unique system and if you're a fighting game fan it's for sure going to be up your alley. Also you have quickly become one of my favorite channels. You're hilarious XD
I’d kill to be able to go back to this generation once again. All three platform holders were pulling their weight and cranking out high quality games left and right. Not like today where one cranks out high quality games on anemic hardware, the next cranks out high quality games to divert your attention from extortion and highway robbery, while the last does nothing and pretends it’s made a contribution.
Third party games are great these days (as was the case back in our favorite 5th gen). I’d love to go back too tho… game scene was so much fun in late 90s…
I remember geting mine, it came with three titles, VF2, Virtua Cop 2 and Sega Rally. It was approximately £250, back in 96 I believe. Still to this day it looks beautiful, the pads still feel lovely, and certain games have a classic atmosphere.
Scud is especially awesome if you plug a light gun into slot 2 and choose the 2 player, one controller, one gun option. Player one controls Scud in the run and gun stages while player 2 lays down cover fire with the light gun as Drywall. There are even 2 settings- one where the light gun shots kill bad guys and one where the freeze them. One player two guns light gun mode is a frantic blast as well!
@@bananonymouslastname5693 I'm sure I was going to try it out and forgot over time. I don't get many opportunities to turn on the Saturn. I have the Predator gun for Saturn but no other games for it. Hard to justify breaking all of that out for one game.
Definatley recommend The Crow: City of Angels, it's a staple of the Saturn experience at my buddy's cabin. First time anyone goes up they've gotta play it, in all its so bad it's awful but so awful it goes great with friends.
Very nice list! I had never heard of that one "Souky", but I am huge shmup fan. I need to check it out! It looks fantastic! When I used to collect Saturn games like a decade or so ago, I picked up Donpachi, Dodonpachi and the Parodius games through an import game store. Those are some fantastic shmups as well and I can easily recommend to any shmup fans! I used to own about a dozen games on Saturn and, oddly enough, one of my absolute favorites was the Saturn-exclusive _Digital Pinball: Last Gladiators_ . Yes, it is a pinball game, but it is surprisingly addictive to get that high score! It actually has a pretty authentic look and feel for a virtual pinball game. The ball physics feel perfect and there are four unique tables to pick from. If you're a pinball fan in the slightest, I can't recommend this game enough! It actually came with my Saturn console free, so I probably would have overlooked it otherwise.
I can’t recommend a terraonion MODE enough. Beyond the prices, some amazing Saturn games you really can’t find anymore, regardless of price (some of the Working Designs games come to mind). Of course I’d always prefer the actual copy of the game but that’s not always an option so a MODE goes a long way, and still lets you play on original hardware
The Sega Saturn was not a console I thought I'd enjoy as much as I did, I imported one from Japan and with it the seller had just a bunch of games. And since, I've gotten even more, I got 33 games total now, it's been a wild ride for sure. I got a few recommendations: for anyone who likes Dragon Ball Z I think Dragon Ball Z Shin Butoden is stellar. For any Gundam fans out there, the Side Story trilogy is a great one. Another one I recommend is Virtual On, I actually prefer the Saturn version over the Dreamcast just because the Saturn has more buttons, so the game plays a lot better. Unless you're willing to get one of those Virtual On arcade sticks.
Never got to experience the Saturn, but seeing this video makes me really hope Sega puts out a Saturn mini, so I can experience the games in an affordable way. Thank you for all the effort you put into this channel!
I liked all your games there. A game I would recommend is Earth Worm Jim 2 for the Sega Saturn. I played this game for the Sega Genesis & it was really good. I couldn't believe how much better it was on the Sega Saturn though. The Graphics & sound I noticed were that much better on the Saturn.
I enjoyed my Saturn back in the mid-'90s, but the PS was the real workhorse in my home back then. PS1 is still my fave retro system today, but the Saturn is the comfort food on most days when i need to put on something special or really good. Great video as always...
Every single pick you choose were fantastic picks. My personal favorites in random order are all mostly arcade ports, X-Men VS Street Fighter, Sega Rally Championship, Die Hard Arcade, Fighters Mega Mix, Night Warriors Darkstalkers Revenge, Alien Trilogy , NBA Jam T.E, The legend of Oasis,Shining The Holy Ark , Princess Crown, Outrun and Power drift.
Sega Rally Championship forever! Great video on one of gaming's most misunderstood consoles. I love the Saturn regardless of its shortcomings. Thanks Retrobird!
Seen a couple others mention it, so here's my two cents: If your goal is to experience the games on original hardware and not just own/collect physical copies I would argue that the Saturn is the system that benefits most from an ODE. The Satiator allows you to keep the disc drive functional; the Fenrir Duo replaces the disc drive and keeps the expansion card slot on the back open. I've got both in separate consoles and they're both great - I flip between them at random and really can't notice any difference in terms of gameplay.
Fantastic video!!! The Saturn is my favorite console and had it since launch. Those were all great picks, I would add Virtua Fighter 2 or Fighters Mega mix as Japanese versions are still cheap. The same can be said for Sega Rally an amazing arcade racer!!😄👍

@@RetroBirdGaming GET ON MY LAWN!! 🤣 honestly I thank you so much for giving us such enjoyable content and also for recommending games that I didn't even know about that I have now played and enjoyed because of you, cheers buddy let's have a banana to celebrate your awesomeness 😄👍
As a sports / horse racing fan I liked Saturn because it was the only console that had "Winning Post" in English! Not an exciting game from a gameplay standpoint but, if you enjoy the thrill of owning and breeding horses, you can play for years!
SaGa Frontier is a great game that got played a lot over here back in the day. The mechanics of the series take more getting used to than most games in the genre; but it's an excellent series overall.
Awesome video, incredible console. I have wireless Saturn controllers and a Satiator with a complete rom set. I now have access to all the bangers without the high cost.
I think what's really overlooked on the Saturn, especially with imports, is racing games (and especially with the circle pad). Initial D (some may say the PS1 version was better), Sega Touring Car Championship, Sega Rally Championship, Touge King 1 & 2, Gale Racer, Daytona USA, Over Drivin GT-R (it's Need for Speed 1 but only Nissan), Impact Racing, Doozy-J, ChoroQ, GT-24, Manx TT, Shutoku Battle 97, Wipeout, and, of course: Outrun.
A Sega vid (except for the 32X) is always going to be awesome, definitely good stuff man. Your list is solid, just going through all of the great fighters and shooters really covers a lot. Games would add to the list are Sonic Jam, Die Hard Arcade, Dungeons and Dragons Collection, SuperPuzzle Fighter, and Saturn Bomberman. I never considered trying that w/Ready Player One though 😅
Great video once again, Retro Bird! Just wanted to tell you that I'm enjoying the SNES so far, it's my first retro console! I'm playing Super Mario World
We neeeeed a "Zapper vs Stunner" video!! 😍 This was the first time ever that I discovered "Sega's Zapper"! So cool! Never knew that Saturn had something like Zapper. One of my favorite consoles. Just ordered a rad2x for mine recently so I think my switch and ps5 are gonna take a break while I play Saturn for a while
I have to recommend the Dungeons & Dragons arcade games for the Saturn. The load times are brutal and they are Japanese only, but as far as 2D beat em ups go-they are must play material! Beautiful 2D graphics and satisfying pick up and play combat.
Oh man, Soukyugurentai is such an amazing game. Glad you showed it some love. Probably the second best shmup on the Saturn behind Radiant Silvergun. And I am one of those people who call it “I don’t know but its a good game” lol

Those are good recommendations. I don't have CRT, but I still got Virtua Cop 1 and 2 and House of the Dead anyway. They'd be more fun and easier with a CRT for certain, but I make do. I really like the fighting games (not the Mortal Kombat games though.)
I have an off the wall recommendation: Bootleg Sampler II. I'm really nostalgic for it. It has demos for games like Virtual On, Baku Baku Animal, Bug Too, Daytona CE and Three Dirty Dwarves. I especially recommend the full Three Dirty Dwarves game, it's a unique beat em up. I tried to get into the Bug demo when I was young, but it always ended before I could beat the level and it also felt really restrictive since I played it after playing the likes of Crash and Spyro. I also recommend Super Tempo. It's a quirky platformer. It takes place after Tempo for the 32X, and Tempo Jr for Game Gear.
There are so many great Saturn games that a person could just list for way too long. I like that its library has such a unique feel and has so many exclusives. I'll list just 5 that weren't in the video that I always go back to: Dragon Force Enemy Zero Sega Rally Championship Legend of Oasis Astal
