Kids of today will never understand the leap into 3D fighting back in 1993 when Virtua Fighting was released. It was absolutely amazing!

It's quite amazing how quickly developers were getting used to making 3D games at the time. In a space of 3 years we went from death shaded polygons to fully texture mapped ones.
It's also the reason why home consoles were vastly different in what they could do in terms of 3D for ones released at this time.

I was 11 when Virtua Fighter first came out in the arcades. I know it looks like garbage now but I remember how revolutionary it was at the time. There was nothing else out there like it and there was always a crowd of kids around a machine at the local arcade. I was excited about one day being able to play a game like that at home.

Yes, back then polygon games were still in their infancy, so it was a gigantic leap forwards. This was the same year that Mortal Kombat II and Super Street Fighter II were released.

I remember first seeing a screenshot of a 3D Ryu in a blue gi from SF EX in a magazine back in 1996. It was a stark realization of how much video technology had changed by the mid nineties, especially as many of us were still playing the 2D SF2 and SF Alpha.

Thanks for the awesome trip down in memory lane. The 90s was such a blast with these types of games. Love these types of games to death especially Soul Edge, Virtua Fighter, and Fighting Vipers.

With the sole exception of Last Bronx, I remember playing each of these in the arcade. Talk about nostalgia!
You forgot Beastorizer or bloody roar, though. I know it was gimmicky, but I still love that game... maybe because of just how rare it was ...

This takes me back. The first time I played Virtua Fighter was in a Arcade in Bogey's Golf and Family Entertainment in Memphis, Tennessee. I use to play Virtua Fighter 2 at the local K-Mart department store walking distance from home. The Sega Model 2 developed by Sega with assistance from American aerospace contractor Lockheed Martin.

Many memories of the 90s,i remember i played Tekken 2 and 3 a lot in 1997-98 on the arcades what a great time to be alive,if i remember correctly Virtua Fighter was one the first 3d games i saw in the arcades, also Dead or Alive 1 ,Namco Alpine Racer and Battle Arena Toshinden on Ps1.

  • @VertexTuner
    @VertexTuner Год назад

Okay, minor call out, the version of Dead or Alive shown is Dead or Alive++ which was an arcade port of the PS1 version of the game and ran on a Tecmo variant of the SONY ZN-1 and not the Model 2. The variant is closer to the Namco System 12 architecture than the System 11 similarly specced ZN-1's mostly found in arcade games at the time and was called the Tecmo TPS (Tecmo PlayStation). It was developed with assistance from SONY and Namco and supposedly contains Tekken 2 code.
I'm pointing this out as the original arcade release was indeed on Model 2 and featured assistance from members of AM2 and used parts of the Virtua Fighter 2 code AM3 used for Last Bronx in it's development. The Saturn port, like Last Bronx, was also built from the base source code of Virtua Fighter 2 for Saturn, which is the reason the PlayStation version differs drastically in terms of visuals, arena configuration, etc, as those features could be replicated, but were not permitted under the license.
Dead or Alive is notable for being one of the few non SEGA produced arcade titles to use the Model 2 hardware, but also the only game to appear on both SEGA's main arcade board and SONY's main arcade board of it's time.
This is most likely the reason Itagaki stated that the Saturn/Model 2 version was the "true Dead or Alive 1" when interviewed about the release of Ultimate, it's due to licensing issues at the time not allowing him to release DoA++ on Xbox thanks to the licensed code owned by Namco and their contract with SONY, in contrast, if the PS2 or PS3 ever saw a release of Ultimate, then we could have seen DoA++ included instead of the Saturn/Model 2 version of DoA1.

You sure misrepresented Tecmo's Dead or Alive game by using the Sony PlayStation version... that game was originally made on the Sega Model 2 hardware and converted to the Sega Saturn only Sega of America's 90s management staff refused to support localizing the game... because that was a common betrayal theme of 90s Sega of America that everyone forgets... that's why Tecmo a whole year later decided to make a Sony PlayStation custom version which does not look like the original arcade game at all.
Also in 1996 Sega released Virtua Fighter 3 on the Sega Model 3 arcade hardware...
Obviously the biggest takeaway during the 90s is that Sony had invested so much into the PlayStation hardware that Namco and even TamSoft were able to make high quality 3d fighting games while Sega was a bit spoiled by having high end exotic hardware and not really focusing on the Sega Saturn to provide 3d graphics arcade games.

I do love 90s fighting games for their clear graphics and atmosphere of Asian martial arts.
Ironically, the hardware of 2000s made the genre dead for me. The backgrounds are full of low poly shit moving forward and backward.
Every punch or kick causes crazy lighting effects, which fill up the screen.
And these stupid combos, which literary don't let you land - it's stupid.

Battle Arena Toshinden 2 (a reverse port?) is a pretty good fighter imo but not as good as Soul Edge/Blade. It’s predecessor is a C-tier fighter though I won’t deny its importance and I wish people would recognize its historical significance/impact and put it in a positive light as it was a launch title on the PS1 and the first ever weapon-based fighter. Dare I say without it, we wouldn’t have Soul Calibur.

Dead or alive me caía mal, no se...

thats insane when you think that street fighter 2 was made only 2 years before virtua fighter, and 2 years after you had more advance graphics and gameplay, today people wont understand how great and important was the 90s , in 6 years you came from praising super nes games or arcade games graphics like final fight to playing 3d games with rotating camera, and in 1996 arcades thar were the king were declining because you had better and really longer gams in your home. ( actually they extended life with big cabinets imposible to play it at hhome games.

SOUL EDGE FOR LIFE! HAd Toshinden 2, but it was boring fast. Virtua Fighter 2 was better, Tekken 2 was better than that, SF EX was superior to those and almost all that came before too. SOme might consider SOUl Edge a close 2nd to EX, but I love SOul Edge more. Dead or Alive is in third place regardless because, lets be honest...the games didnt really up the "eye candy" until later years, but it was still cool to see chicks bustin moves and kickin ass.
