Capcom games might have been flashier and animated better on screen (bigger budget too) but SNK games always had more detail. More work went into sprite work
Keep in mind that the Neo Geo hardware was designed around 1989 by Alpha Denshi's (World Heroes) employee Eiji Fukatsu… based on even older arcade hardware called Alpha 68K (1986). He increased the horizontal resolution from 256 to 320, increased the CPU clock from 8 to 12 MHz, added sprite shrinking, a better sound chip, the ability to address up to 330 megabits of ROM data without bank switching and consolidated the off-the-shelf logic chips into custom chips to shrink the board size down. Now look at the games that came out 15 years later… truly impressive hardware still today! There is also something to be said for amazing artistry and game design as well. Neo Geo was the real hot dog!
Thanks for the video. The largest carts were not always the best, but SNK's beautiful sprite work and phenomenal intro's have clearly stood the test of time. The timeless gameplay means I'll be a lifelong fan of the classics too.
SNK has made some top notch sprite work in the late 90s. Kof 98, The last blade 1 and 2, Real bout fatal fury 2 are some of my favorite fighting games.
'Size Does Matter', alongside portraits of Mai Shiranui, Blue Mary and Vanessa. Ha! Very clever 😆😏 Love their in-game art in KOF 2001 Although you would have better put in-game arts of Angel and Shermie since they are the 'biggest' women in the series 🥰
KOF 2003 was the last game to use the MVS system and while it's impressive from a technical standpoint how SNK Playmore managed to put this entire game on a very outdated system, unfortunately KOF 2003 wasn't that great. Sometimes I think that SNK Playmore should have used the Atomiswave system for that game and SVC Chaos After all, they only used the Atomiswave for KOF Neowave, XI and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum
The memories when I'm playing this SNK games are superb. The character designs are very cool and detailed...adding the sound effects results a masterpiece games...
Btw in your SNES shmups episode you forgot Rendering Ranger. It’s both a side scroller and a shmup and contains some of the most advanced graphics on SNES. It looks more like a Neo Geo game than 16 bit
Man, the late 90s, early 2000s was that nice, sweet spot where arcade games were just about to get phased out by the home consoles. Its as if they knew, so they made some the most memorable arcade games in that period ... I wish they would bring back Rage of The Dragons and expand upon it. Would revitalize the Double Dragon series!
1997 was a particularly bad year for Neo Geo Games, because most slowdowns occured in those games that were either developed or released in the year. This prompted Neo Geo to be "facelifted" with an upgrade in 1998
"The series disappointment" That title goes to the Eolith era KOFs (more specifically 2001). KOF99 had awesome music, music and art direction. 2001 got nothing.
When Super Streetfighter II was on SNES it was impressive but when I saw King of Fighters on Arcade it was mindblown and sooooo much better than super streetfighter II, just the Animations blew my mind🤔
Did Neo Geo Cartridges ever have any hardware additions (Like the MMC3 in the NES, the DSP-1 and Super FX in the SNES)? There would have had to be some additions to make the late-era games look so much better than the early ones.
There was no add-ons, the later games made use of bank switching to increase memory usage. It where the 100 mega shock and later "GIGA POWER" games came from.
@@prielknaaphofnar.9754 Bank switching was something that the NES required the MMCs in the cartridges to do. Since the Neo Geo had such huge cartridges, I would be surprised if they didn't put extra or different chipsets on later cartridges. They would have had to put different ROM chips to even get those higher capacities.
Thank you for you list. What a nice editing! May I ask, what kind of shader did you use in 0:23 mark? Is this from retroarch? It looks so good with tv overlay and everything. I tried to find something similar but couldn't :(
I'm 40. I consider myself lucky. Raised in this generation. I loved it. The best. Also thankful for what we have right now. I love modern times. Everything at your fingertips and people are liberated. I wouldn't want to go back. I want to see what's next. I think it comes down to less is more. People love the pass because, well, you got less, but you got more out of it. Today you get much more, but it's up to you how you shape your world. The world won't shape you anymore. Won't nurture you, like it use to. These days, you belong to one group, you'll feel excluded from another. It could be the best of times, or worst of times, depending on what you do with the world that is at your fingertips. Honestly, in my opinion, I got a sinking feeling that things won't get any better. If you hate this generation, you'll hate it even more in 5 years. I wish I didn't have to go back or forward. Wish I could stay right here in 2023.
If you're are wondering if Vanessa Blue Mary and Mai are in the thumbnail cause they have the largest breast. You're kinda right but supposedly Dolores and Shermie have the biggest.
But i was thinking of megs for example first game metal slug 2 has 362 megs how is posible 45 mb i was thinking of 362 megs to be 362 mb someone explain to me
See I liked most all of the King of Fighters games from 94 to 99 and 2000. BUt 98 was weird to me for some reason. The appealof the King of Fighters and similar system of games was whn some of them had those 3 on 3 battles. The team battle thing was sooo cool, and it helped lead to one of the greatest fighting games of all time: Marvel vs Capcom with its team on team battle system. Especially MVC 2, that was one of the last great fighting games that wasnt in full 3D
Its an arcade machine. Obviously you wouldnt find a rpg. And kof is way more difficult and has more depth than sf. Neo geo was the pinnacle of 16 bit gaming. ☮️
SNKs animation artists were unrivaled in the 90s/2000s, just insane quality compared to any of the other arcade franchises at the time
Capcom games might have been flashier and animated better on screen (bigger budget too) but SNK games always had more detail. More work went into sprite work

The Neo Geo is the Italian Bratwurst
Even the smaller size games are amazing like
Baseball Stars professional
Fatal Fury
Last Resort
Magician Lord
Burning Fight
World Heroes

Seeing these brings back memories.
SNK game intros are still unrivaled to this day!
Thank you for this video!
Ahh man, the old memories of the glorious days of SNK when arcade games were still something....
SNK has made some top notch sprite work in the late 90s. Kof 98, The last blade 1 and 2, Real bout fatal fury 2 are some of my favorite fighting games.
Let’s not forget about KOF ‘99,Samurai Shodown 4, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special and the Metal Slug series.
Damn, those pre-title intros are dope.

Actually SamSho V special was the last game that came out on the Neo Geo. It was going to be V perfect, but it was not released.

Neo Geo intros were a thing of beauty, and the platform was the peak of pixel art in general.

"Overall, it is fun, but it lacks some of the variety, depth and attention to detail usual in the series"
SNK Playmore in a nutshell.
Too bad though, I really love how SNK redraw Capcom characters, it way better than Capcom itself imo 😁
Thank you i was searching for this info for about a month you rescued me thank you i subscribed
Viewpoint is a masterpiece. One of the most beautiful pixel shmups ever made. Amazing soundtrack. ☮️
"The series disappointment"
That title goes to the Eolith era KOFs (more specifically 2001). KOF99 had awesome music, music and art direction. 2001 got nothing.
The only thing Kof99 got wrong was the backward dodge. The rest is God.
Kof2001 has horrible musics and portraits and the worse Athena too.
Neo Geo games have aged so well. They have aged more than most 2d Sprite games and 3D sprite games that I have grown up with.
The Last Blade series is not set during the Edo period, its set during the Bakumatsu.
Ah, fuck. Just look those game intro designs! Precious! Things like these, with all that love put onto, they ain't done anymore.
Not much variety in the Neo’s library is there? Great artwork and animation though
It's an arcade system. But yeah not much variety especially compared to the console market.
I came for the plot (not literally) and stayed for the journey to the past. Thanks for the video
That camel was a total WMD unto itself.

Back when Clark still looks like mercenaries and army guy, now in recent KOF he looks like Stryker from Mortal Kombat 😐
