Catching Trout on Soft Plastics: Are Soft Stickbait Worms BFS Heresy?

Here's John having a whale of a time fishing towards the end of the trout season and catching plenty of wild brown trout on soft plastics and his 4'2" custom fibreglass Bait Finesse rod by Resilure (in Fishing Discoveries signature specification and finish).
Although he prefers targeting trout with small hardbaits on Bait Finesse System gear, John found that being able to fish a bit more slowly across the riverbed (and have the fish hold on to the soft plastic baits a little longer) that he got more and better hook-sets on this particular trip.
At the same time, the cheb rig (and 2" Korum Squirmz lure ) could be easily fished in a more active "swimbait" style retrieve too - so it's very versatile.
De-barbing and matching both the bait and the hook-size to the target trout helped to ensure fish welfare - and you can see that while being filmed for the net-shot, the fish was getting a good rest and able to pump oxygenated water over its gills.
So what are your thoughts on going with soft plastics for trout? Obviously having good contact with your lure (as with any fishing style) is important for avoiding deep-hooking fish.
John's reel is the Shimano Calcutta BFS HG (left hand wind) with custom handle knobs and the line used here is Berkley Trilene Fluorocarbon in 4lb breaking strain (rigged straight through from reel to lure).

I am a very keen fly fisher but I do like the odd session with soft baits on the light lure fixed spool gear for trout it is great fun . I am looking to get into Bfs for next year , have just ordered a Shimano Curado bfs baitcaster and will be looking for a rod I like . I use baitcasters for pike lure fishing and like the direct feel I get to the lure .

Thanks John, I think you'll really enjoy BFS when you get into the feel of the casting. It's a similar satisfaction to fly casting in many ways.

tell me, is not a soft rod for using minnow ?
For a heavyier BFS minnow (say 4-g and above) it is probably better to go with a stiffer rod than this one. For minnows between 1.7g and maybe 3.5g it is a lot of fun. Yes there will be some days when you maybe need a faster/stiffer rod for better hook-sets - but it just depends on how much you want to enjoy casting versus maximum hook-up ratio. Paul.

I'd like to understand when and where this type of fishing is allowed. Being a fly fisher I know these rules and conventions but will have to get a lesson to understand the usual rules for BFS.
