  • Are 1-gram Lures just POINTLESS showing off with a baitcaster? Why not just use a spinning reel? And don't TROUT MAGNETS work best with a bobber?
    I tackle these questions and a few more so you don't have to endure the sneers of the lure fishing and fly fishing police in order to find out. The reel is the affordable Tsurinoya Dark Wolf Ultra KF50s with upgraded brake magnets (with stock spool & stock bearings), line is Berkley Fireline Crystal (0.10-mm) with a 0.15-mm copolymer leader (Preston Innovations "Reflo-Power").

(Well I was consumed by carp for 15 years) the weirs around the don are great, the Don north of sheffield is great I recognise a few venues you frequent and the little park (b***r h**l Ox*****g) hope to see you on the bank Paul.

    Try fishing an old school "bail-less" Orvis 50A, or a Cargem. A lot of the twists in spin fishing come from reeling line over round surfaces (guides) and the reel itself. Tight lines

      I appreciate that the rod details which are easy to read on a tablet or laptop screen might not be so easy on a phone! (Particularly since RUclips seems to default to lower resolution settings on phones!). The rod is a Tsurinoya Ares C472ul and is 4' 7" long. I was using 13lb Berkley Fireline Crystal (50-m on the spool). With Roro SIC bearings and the magnet upgrade that I talk about in my blog article on the Dark Wolf Ultra, I was casting the Trout Magnet up to 42ft 8". There is a full list of casting performance under different upgrade conditions here: fishingdiscoveries.com/tsurinoya-dark-wolf-ultra/

      Hi - apologies for the delay (when I replied to your other comment I didn't see you also asked about the rod in this comment). I hope the information in the other reply was helpful? In terms of the rod, it is hard to find now but it was the Tsurinoya Ares C472 - a solid carbon, one-piece blank of 4ft 7" long. It's probably a little easier to cast 1-g lures a bit further with a slightly longer rod (say 5' 6" to 6-foot). Great demonstration. I'm thinking about picking up the Darkwolf ultra as an upgrade from my Zephyr for throwing lighter lures. Something I haven't been able to find an answer on is casting performance with heavier lures (4~7 grams), in comparison to standard sized bfs reels like the Zephyr.
    I'm aware that smaller diameter spools grant better casting performance with lighter lures, but can have a negative effect on casting distance compared to larger diameter spools (due to less payout of line per spool rotation). In your experience, would you say the Darkwolf ultra casts these slightly heavier lures further or shorter than your zephyr? Thanks for your help.

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  2 года назад +2

      I've not done a direct side by side comparison (or measured the distance), but I find I can cast a 9-g crank bait a "healthy fishing distance" with the DWU. My guess would be that it goes a similar distance to the Zephyr- but, like you, my gut says the Zephyr might throw that bigger bait a little further. You've made me curious to try it now... hahaha. Paul.

    Thanks for the video Paul. It looks like you've been fishing BFS more and more lately. Is it true that you're migrating from fly fishing and Tenkara to BFS? If so, could you talk a bit about your reasons?

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  2 года назад +4

      I'm not migrating, I'm just covering more of the stuff I'm either exploring or that I grew up with before starting to write about Tenkara and Fly Fishing. The aim with Fishing Discoveries is to provide detailed info on a range of disciplines so that specialists can find good, practical info and inspiration while we can also support people looking to expand their horizons into "all round angler" territories to augment their existing "base". By serving as a hub for well rounded anglers, I can then also introduce more people (those who are interested) to "tried and tested" info on Tenkara via the ready made resource in the sister site "Discover Tenkara". That way there should be a more sustainable future for Japanese tenkara techniques - since it offers an alternative to the existing, predominant Tenkara resources which are mainly aimed at non anglers or very new anglers. Look out for new FD coaching material on Small Stream fishing, Nymphing and also traditional Wet Fly Fishing in the pipeline (along with my upcoming book "The Nature of Fly Fishing"). All the best, Paul

      This was with Roro BFS ST bearings added and a magnet upgrade: NOTE - for any DWU reels sold after June 2022, you don't need to do the magnet upgrade. Also, if you clean the stock bearings with acetone (and maybe add a tiny droplet of Deuthlon cast lube), then you get a decent way towards the roro bearing upgrade performance. • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  10 месяцев назад

      Is it the Dark Wolf or the Dark Wolf Ultra? The "ultra" will work with lures down to lower weights (easily down to around 2g - and with practice; below 1-g). The original Dark Wolf is best with baits of around 2.5g and above as a rough guide. As long as you're having fun, it's not a mistake (and as long as you stay curious, it is always fun because being curious means you're always playing and experimenting). Paul.

      @@jason-si4mq Alphas will do 1g out of the box - it is just that I found the magnet upgrade on the DWU let the Tsurinoya reel outperform the Alphas with a 1.7-g lure. Most likely this is because the Alphas stock spool is 6 point something grams and the DWU stock spool is around 5.3g. However the Alphas feels better made and casts great without any need to add extra magnets to the brakes.

    I was looking at getting a Dark Wolf Ultra. I was planning on upgrading the bearings. Is there additional upgrades I should get? I know the braking system changed on the newer version, the magnet upgrade can't be done. So should the brakes stay stock?

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  2 года назад +2

      The reports I've had from people is that the reel seems to perform well with the static brakes (without further upgrades). I'd be interested to test out that new system myself for my own style of casting - and with very light lures. I would say that either cleaning the stock bearings or upgrading the bearings to ceramic, micro bearings has a very significant benefit to my dynamically-braked DWU. After cleaning bearings with acetone (and allowing to dry), applying just a tiny half droplet of light bearing lubricant is of great benefit. The best bearing lubricants work when all liquid ingredients have evaporated - leaving behind a dry, lubricated surface. Deuthlon cast lube is one of these and also repels water. Whatever ultralight bearing lubricant you have available, it may be worth doing that before deciding to try upgraded bearings. I don't know for certain whether the static brakes would allow for the full benefit of microbearings - but as long as the initial spool start up was controlled by the brakes; you should see an improvement with very light lures. However, do bear in mind that for the longest casts with lures towards the mid to top end of "BFS" weights, microbearings could actually reduce max casting distances. So, I'd ask myself how often I'd be casting lures of below 2g before committing to microbearings. Of course, you can get upgraded bearings that are designed for lures heavier lures - but do bear that in mind when choosing.
      Long story short, if you don't already have some specialist bearings lubricant, it may be cheaper to just try a set of Roro ceramic hybrid bearings rated for your intended lure weights to see if they give a performance boost. If there's not enough improvement, you should be able to sell them on relatively easily. Then, cleaning up your stock bearings should see you in a good spot (and if you have - or plan to get - other BFS or baitcasting reels, then you'll have the right stuff to treat those as well). Paul

      I'm curions how not needing to source/spend money on extra magnets equals "wasted my money"?
      The fixed brake system version (which doesn't need/can't take the magnet mod) performs exactly the same as this modified version (the bearings upgrade is worth it of course to get EXACTLY the same performance) but it also works great with just acetone flushing of the stock bearings and a tiny drop of light bearings lube.
