Can You Believe I Caught a Fish by "Fly Fishing" with a Baitcaster?!

  • I try to catch my first trout of the season using the Dark Wolf Ultra BFS reel to cast a stupidly light nymph...
    For a budget baitcasting reel with a stock spool, simple brake-magnet upgrade and $15 bearings to be able to cast BELOW HALF A GRAM is just crazy.

      Thank you Christopher! It amazes me that $20 spent on magnets and bearings allows the stock spool version of a very affordable reel to do these things. I was initially prepared to find the DWU quite ordinary or maybe even not to like it very much - but with those easy tweaks it is a remarkable thing.

    Thanks, Paul, I'll pass on the bending of pins. One alternative (from Bass N Bonsai) was a section of sewing thread through the hole before reinserting the pin. I for one, will pass on replacing the spool bearing and swap out only the palm plate bearing.

    I've never used a baitcaster reel before, but I have used jig heads down to 0.4 grams on a spinning reel. The method is very much weather dependant, any type of wind and it's a dead loss

    I was looking at this reel. Close to getting it but then the genius and soloking acura came out. I try to ultralight fish with 1/32 jigs to the smallest and lightest I can find.

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  Год назад +1

      Hi there, you probably wouldn't go far wrong with either reel; but the extra bearing in the Acura (which supports the pinion) makes it a really excellent option. Also the stock bearings and the good match between the braking system and the spool design seem to let it cast Trout Magnets better in its "Out of the Box" condition compared to the DWU. Cleaning the bearings and then applying just the tiniest amount of Deuthlon Cast Lube will increase light lure performance - or (for the maximum light lure performance) upgrading the casting bearings to Roro BFS bearings (a pair of 834 size) adds significant distance to all three reels you mention when it comes to throwing the lightest lures. More info on the ACURA here: fishingdiscoveries.com/soloking-acura-hicc-50/

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  2 года назад

      On the light braid when you're "keeping in touch" as the nymph drifts back towards you, it's usually a simultaneous visual (white braid) and feel (zero stretch and thinner/lighter than Spanish leader) indication. That's even true for winter grayling also actually.

    Paul, How did you deal with the micro c-clamps holding the DF Ultra 50 spool pin shank in place? W/out them, the shank is small for the hole. Risky to take the pin out for bearing replacement without a pin cure.

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  2 года назад

      Hi Dennis - I think I just got super fortunate... I quickly pinged off the clip by accident (not paying attention), but I found that the pin itself was a good fit for the spool-shaft; so in the case of my reel it didn't really matter. In other reels when the pin was a loose fit, the dodgy tactic of very, very slightly bending the pin so that it grips the sides of the hole - while still fitting properly into the pinion gear worked well. Don't take that as a recommendation though in case folks start snapping their pins left right and centre! Paul

    Would the Zpi bearing works as good as the Roro?
    I think that you could probably get some more distance if you switch the line to something smaller like the WFT microbraid 0.03 mm !

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  2 года назад +1

      I'm sure ZPI micro bearings would work very well. I'll definitely be trying some lighter braid. For this first experiment I was keen to use something very basic and standard (and affordable) that anyone can buy. There was even 50-m of that braid on the spool, whereas 30-m would be fine for that venue.

    As a fly fisher and keen light lure fisher I’ve really got into BFS over the last year and plan to experiment with trout files and lures on BFS. I have an Aldebaran BFS XG but want to go lighter. How would you compare the Aldebaran with the Avail spool to the Daiwa Alphas Air TW? The upgraded spool will probably cost half what the Daiwa costs with bearings, magnets, shipping and tax! But how does performance compare? Cheers, Chris

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  2 года назад +1

      This will probably annoy a lot of people, but I didn't really like the 2016 Aldebaran with the Avail Spool... I fished it side by side with the Air Stream Custom with its regular spool and preferred the ASC...The big caveat is, of course, that reel choice and preference is hugely personal. With that said, I personally greatly prefer the Alphas Air TW with the Roro Spool to the Aldebaran 2016 with the Avail Spool... But, again, that is purely personal opinion. At the same time, for slighly heavier lures, I love the 2017 Calcutta Conquest BFS... Paul

    • @FishingDiscoveries

      There is a very cheap "bearing tool" which helps you push a the small pin out of the spool shaft without damaging it. The Acehawk brand on Aliexpress does one for very little money. It is certainly possible to do it with pliers if you take care. It's not a complex job - the one thing to look out for on this reel is the tiny little "c" clip which holds the spool pin in place. It's easy to ping off and lose.
