I started tying in 1966. I was 9 years old and went to a Trout Unlimited course at a high school. I used these skills all my life up until a few years ago when I developed central tremors. Now days I just buy my flies. I would tell anyone considering a hobby or activity for a young person that this art is very rewarding. Catching your first fish on a fly that you crafted with your own hands is a life long memory. This art can be very lucrative as well.

I still tie whenever I can however these days it’s harder because I no longer have places I can get to for fishing. I taught myself how to when at 20 I was hit by a car walking home from work from behind the driver too busy yelling at her kids to be paying attention to where she was going. I was in the hospital 3 days and out of work 3 and a half months I had to have something to do so I learned to tie my own flies . Been doing it ever since. As a foot note does anyone know of good places to fish walking distance around the bolivar Missouri area. Because I don’t have the luxury of driving 1 never learned and these days it wouldn’t do any good because I couldn’t afford it things have become so expensive. The working poverty class like me can only afford to keep rent and utilities paid with only food money left and nothing saved. No I’m not asking for financial help I will manage as I always have. Just asking for places that I can fish that I can walk to.

I learned it on my own. My parents got me a tying kit when I was in middle school. I caught a lot of panfish and a few bass on random concoctions I came up with. Surprising to me I made one that looked like a bee that caught the most bass.

I hooked and lost a massive brown using it in a deep pool. Also good for deep runs where you want to get down deep fast w/o weights or even a bead head. He said some guides frowned on it.

This is very new to me. For the designs, are they trying to mimic the fish's food? or just trial and error? Very interesting because I never thought that fish are very visual animals, before I thought they have to smell the bait before trying them.

That's exactly right, most fly fishing is for trout and salmon types of fish that tend to feed on insects off the top or the water

In my opinion, I really don't see why a fly should be "banned" because the entire point of fishing as a sport is doing whatever you can to fool the fish. I would understand if you were actually cheating somehow, like literally brainwashing all of the fish in the water or something, but this is just really good bait. I don't see the issue with that. If it's so good, maybe other people should use it

The thing is, there are fish you'd never get to even look at anything else... trophy browns that will only eat larva the size of an eyelash (during the time you happen to be fishing there). Drag something like a roostertail or rapala through, they'll swim directly away immediately and likely stop feeding for the rest of the day.

To be clear, banned from competition. In all my years of fly fishing, and license checks that go with the hobby, not one officer has requested I open my flybox or even cared what I had tied on.

The fact that anyone thinks any of these should be banned is just another example of people being mad because they've bad at something. Or even just because someone was better than them. Without those fancy lures that person wouldn't be so good at fishing. That must be it!
    Unsportsmanlike conduct at it's finest.

I don't do fly fishing, but I always appreciated the flies both as art and a science. Though, as some of these show, you don't need to reinvent the yarn string if you're playing with a cat. There's just some cues that gets animals interested, and I can imagine how these catch the eye of a fish even if not at all natural looking. Though the level of detail on some of the natural looking flies I see are amazing. But hey, why spend top $ on cat toys when plastic bottle lids are more fun anyway?

The salmon egg,or steelhead eggs I tied 45 years ago were all yarn,I would blend light pink and orange, with a single strand of white, some would get a light white streamer, some with two single strand of red, like a blood strand, take the main yarn and pull it up and cut it half round to form an egg, trim it round, take the skane strand and trim it about an inch,I made thousands of these, sold them all over northern Cal to Oregon,I paid people to tie them,a lot of work, but a fish killer!

  • @superwarrior6275

I’m going to start this with the fact that I’ve never been fly fishing before but I’ve done a lot of everything else. So correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t all the technique involved in flying fishing in the cast? Like u don’t twitch or jig the lure correct? Cause if so i don’t think “ lures”should be banned especially outside if competitions, kinda feels like a “ i lost so I’m gonna complain” situation. With that being said it’s totally fair for competitions to bane them especially if they want the challenge to be more difficult. Beyond that I don’t think they should be banned unless they’re actually harming the environment and now days they’re limitations on how much you can catch usually so i don’t think over effective bait is going to cause issues.
