The unhooking part of this guide was the best I've seen. You included everything you needed to know even for when the hook's too deep to retrieve. I don't think I've seen anyone cover that part before.

I'm from Florida, USA, and although we do not have pike, the dead bait technique shown here is also works REALLY WELL for catching gar, which are basically the equivalent of pike, as they share many characteristics, such as long jaws, sharp teeth, etc. Thanks for the awesome video!

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ruclips.net/user/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

A few tips I do like to give:
      • Use a proper leader
      • Get yourself good/long pliers, one for unhooking and one for cutting hooks (not the one you cut wires with).
      • A decent size rubber net (you dont want to lose your first meter pike☻) the rubber prevents your hook from getting stuck and also the pikes teeth.
Lastly a landing mat if you want. This is optional in most places. (Not where I'm from)
Goodluck, they are strong fighters and beautiful fish.

You are correct in Canada like Quebec trois riviere or Montreal where I'm at massive Pike and Maske are plentiful. My best was a 42 inch maske and a 20 inch pike. The same river also holds very nice sized walley perch and Bass. Massive catfish and so many other species. Never seen 1 Trout figured it because we have so many predator fish. They only get bigger when you go up north a tad incredible fishing here. You need very good gear as these fish are very aggressive. Never tried a float cast for these fish always casting. I'll try some of your techniques. Great video

In Maine? Interesting, I'd have never guessed. I know they're native to the St. Lawrence, which is reportedly one of the prime US pike fisheries. So this must be the Atlantic basin on the other side of the mountains, correct? bet you have some big ones, what with the cool water. They rarely get very big in the Detroit, MI area, where I live, due to the hot summers. Pike longer than 3ft are rare, but 30 inch fish are very common in the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair. But we also have muskies.

Good tutorial. I use a big net or lip grip and unhook the fish in the water or a my 5ft musky/pike live well whenever possible, and mash down the barbs. A difficult situation is when they are hooked on both lips with one treble, so it's not possible to open the mouth. Then I cut the hook on the side that has one point. My experience has been many times more fish are lost due to throwing the hook or tearing out than poor hooksets, especially when trolling, so I use mono on the business end {about 10ft (3m) for casting, and 20ft (7m) for trolling} and a mono leader (trace), for which I've yet to be bitten off using 30lb (~15kg) test. I also fish artificial lures only for pike and other predators, so I have yet to gut hook one.

What we do here, allowed to use love bait, is buy shiners and take a small number six hook and tie up an 18" 17 pound fluorocarbon leader to a three way swivel, we then tie another 18" 10 pound line to the bottom side of the three way then to the other side of that tie a snap swivel and attach a desired weight, usually in the slack waters we fish I use a 8 ounce weight or bigger. Then tie the rig to the main line hook your love bait behind the dorsal fin and drop the line in the water reel the line tight until the pole is loaded a bit and hang a bell. The big weight sets the hook for you if your back is turned while your casting. You hear the bell just pick the pole straight up in the air high, no samurai hook set a shuttle pick up high and reeling. Fish on. So many tactics love it

I'm quite fond of single hook soft baits. More challenge and less messy unhooking produre as you don't need to deel with trebles.

Would Monofilament be an OK mainline to use or does it have to be braid? (young angler looking to keep fish safe👍)
