I have the Tamron G2 for almost a year now , shoot events/weddings and rock low light shows . It is a great lens BUT - after several months it started squeaking when focusing (google "tamron squeaking" , there is a video somewhere) and 1 month later started "slipping" when trying to focus and not focusing at all - I had to switch to manual focus, click and then turn on auto focus again - apparently it was the focus mechanism failure. I replaced it and it worked fine for a few months until it occured again. Even if my specific copy has some malfunction, it is still something I can't trust for a wedding (if I buy a second G2 now). And on top of that, the hunting is very noticeable with low light (backlight on a group of people in a dark club for example). Bottom line - I think I am going for Canon this time.
How do the focus breathing, sharpness, and bokeh quality compare between the two? I need a 24-70 f2.8 zoom for my c200. I've tried the 24-70 f2.8L II from canon but hated it for not having IS. However, when choosing between image quality and getting stabilized shots, I'd rather go with better image quality and find someway to stabilize the shots like using a monopod, or shoulder rig. But still, not having IS will definitely limit the usage of the lens in general. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Bought the Tamron lense and the main thing for me being able to have handheld footage and sometimes photos, I'd have spent the extra on the Canon if I was primarily photo 😁
I thought the colour rendering on the Canon was better in that video sample you showed us. Tamron was just like all over warm, whereas the Canon had a bit more dynamics plus subtle classy warmth .. the colour rendered was totally different from the face to the wall .. however the Tamron seems to paint more from the same palette and missed the variations. Ultimately, apart from all those features, one needs to look at picture rendering too .. colour rendering is more important than sharpness etc. Nice video. Kudos.
I would say most native lenses to the camera will have more accurate color. But some dont mind that as its easy to color correct or match anyway. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
I looked at the Sigma, Tamron and Canon. I discounted the Sigma straight away due to the edge sharpness, which is seriously poor. That's a shame as I adore my other Sigma Art lenses. Because the Tamron is so new, I haven't yet found many direct comparisons (particularly with the Canon) so I had to make a slightly blind decision. In the end, I did go for the Tamron, primarily because it clearly has great image quality, it's cheaper and has stabilisation. In fact, it hasn't been delivered yet but I have my fingers crossed that it meets my expectations!
Auto Focus accuracy and speed also depends on the camera on the back. With the Canon IDX series Bodies, we basically get perfect focus on either lens, I have both lenses and noticed on the 5D4 the Tamron is not as good as it is on my1DX, however they are very close. Splitting hairs.
Thanks Eric looking at a new purchase of a 24-70 - we shoot video and stills and VC/IS is actually really important to us in a run and gun zoom lens like this - but what I'm really struggling with is the Tamron vs the Canon 24-70 F4 IS. It seems like thats more of a comparison to me head to head. Have any thoughts on those two?
if there is only 1 reason to get one of these 2 and that is wedding photography without recording video which one to go for ??? i think i will still get canon i got offer 900 euro for mark 2 version
Great review. I just purchased my Tamron 24-70 2.8 this morning, and of course didn't see your video until afterwards, but you were right on. I debated so long while at the store on which route to go, but because of the no-IS on the Canon, I went the Tamron way. I think I'll be pretty happy with it, even if I bulk up my muscle in my arm. Lol This lens seems to be as heavy or a tad heavier than my Sigma 70-200! Thanks again for the insight.
Hi, I have the Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 which is a good piece already ... but consider the Tamron G2 for a more professionnal lense. Even if the Tamron is a f2.8, and it has a good press, I'm afraid I won't get the expected step up. What do you think ?
yeah this is a much superior lens, image quality wise and speed wise. But its also much more expensive. Do you find the need to step up to this? It is a good investment though, good glass is always a good thing. I'd also look into version 1 of this as well to save money too
Hi, I like your review on the lens. I have been thinking about getting the Tamron lens but I have read elsewhere that the sharpness of the Tamron 24-70 2.8 GS might need some fine tuning with the Tamron tap-in console. Is that true ? Thank you
I have 2 5D IV & they both have minute fine tuning w/my Canon 24-70 II! All my len's needed it, that includes my 100-400 II, 16-35 F4 & Tamron 70-200 G2. I use Focal!
I have a Canon 24-105 f/4L IS but would like better sharpness out of my zoom lens. I've never had a problem with any of my Canon lenses and I've heard people have a bunch of problems with Tamron lenses.
I have a M50 and a 50D. I want to go with the Canon RF line (also playing to upgrade to the R5 or R6 eventually) but it’s a little to pricey for me right now. Is the Tamron really that a good of a option to hold me over until I can afford the RF line?
want to buy at least 3 lenses and that's it i really want a lens that i can keep on there to take all the shots i need instead of having to switch lenses to catch the shot i want
I have the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 II L lens and I have noticed some blur in low light situations from my shaky hands. I am seriously thinking of selling my Canon lens and purchasing this Tamron because of its vibration control. However, I'm still reluctant to do so because I know the 'Canon' is a good lens. Anyway, I am finding it a hard decision. I've considered having both lenses but that is not really economically justifiable for me. I'd be financing the purchase of the Tamron with the Canon lens if I chose to make the change. Would it be a too big a compromise to to trade up to the Tamron lens? Would it be a wise choice?
If you need it, you need it. While I still feel the Canon is a better lens, I dont think your losing that much going to the Tamron. The VC works well with it!
After watching your video and seeing the comparisons I noticed that the tamron suffer more of focos breathing to the point that I think it’s a issue if your a videographer. Good video. Thanks
Hey Eric, thinking about getting 6Dii (coming from 60D) but I would like to have your input on this: (Also I currently own Sigma 70-200 f2.8) - Is the 6Dii kit lens (24-105, f/4) worth it? Or - just get the body and look into the 24-70 f2.8 from Tamron or Sigma?
I have the 6D2 and the 24-70G2 and love the combo. I have been shooting for the SAG for the last two days in very low light. I can’t share the pics due to restrictions but I can tell you that I love it.
Is it worth upgrading from Canon's first version to Tamron G2, just to improve sharpness? Canon Mk1 24-70/2.8 is a very reliable and trustworthy lens as well.
Great. I'm thinking seriously about going with the Tamron G2 over the Canon, especially if it might be quicker to focus and quieter as I often shoot with a videomic pro within a foot of the lens.
Eric Rossi thank you so much. I do a lot of events so I’m moving around a lot. I’m not worried about using this for video too much does that make a difference you think? Thanks again great channel
How many weddigs do you need to shoot to earn the price of the Canon 24-70 f2.8? I'm living in Hungary and I need to shott cca. 4-5 weddings to earn its price. And it is 3-4 months of average salary here.
Tank you for your answer. :) This makes me sad. Yeah, it depends on my prices but the budget of the weddings is my area are very limited. I can not ask for the price what I want because people here are mostly unemployed or are on minimum wage. And the equipment in Europe is more expensive than in the USA. Unfortunately the salaries in Eastern-Europe are about 25-30% of the Western-European salaries. Btw nice review. :) Thank you for this video.
I wish I could... The most money I got for a wedding was 575$. The couple needed only digital photos and no album at all. So I made 1300 processed images and 30-40 fully retouched from the creative session. The sooting took me 14 hours plus 4-5 days of post processing. I'm planning to buy this lens in 2-3 years but only second hand.
Do you own the Tamron 24-70 G2? Will you upgrade from the version 1? Buy the Canon 24-70 II Here: bhpho.to/2DcUi6s Buy the Tamron 24-70 VC G2 Here: Canon:bhpho.to/2Eg6g0c Nikon: bhpho.to/2Bz9Y29
Just a quick question, I am having Canon 24-70 2.8 version 1 and wondering if the Tamron 24-70 VC G2 is a solid upgrade? I know the Canon version 2 would outperform the G2 but I have no ideas about version 1. Hope to hear your opinion. Thanks :)
Hello. I had a question for you. Some people are complaining about the focusing of the tamron g2 . Specifically some are complaining that the middle focus point does not focus in the middle. The focus gets shifted a little bit. Are you aware of any such problem? Or did you face any while using your tamron g2 lens ? Waiting eagerly for your reply. Because your response will help me to decide whether I should go for this lens or not.
I've never heard of that specifically, the only thing I noticed was hunting a bit only at 70mm but thats about it. Someone could have had their calibration off or something.
Interesting. I'm wanting to move to Canon as I'm sick shit of Nikon customer service. I was going to buy the Tamron but after watching this I'm having second thoughts. Is the Tamron really that bad at 70mm?
i bought the tamron 24-70 f2.8 at $999 on sale a few days back for my D750. It has hug issues relates to front/back AF. I had to set micro adjustment values, using tap console, around +13 to +18 and at 24mm i had to set +20 and it still focus a lot closer. Did you have to do AF micro adjustments too?
I bought the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC (v1) last month and after two weeks the focus ring started drastically slipping, which was on my first paying video job, stressful! I returned it and got a full refund. Now I'm wondering if I should go for the G2 instead. Is the build quality on the Tamron G2 better than the first version? I'd consider getting the canon, but no IS is a deal breaker for me and what I do. :(
Thanks Eric :D - The only other thing would be if the G2 is compatible with the Metabones MkV. Might have to check in store with a test lens to be sure. Cheers :D
Tamron for videos hell yeah. Photos 95% Tamron price 100% better. Not loyal to brand names yes I got canon cam but we got to get the best for us. Thank you for your time making videos and experience from yourself. Well done.
Handholding with a 50.6 meg sensor swung my descision to go with the Tamron with it's 5 stop image stabilization, When Canon comes out with version III I will sell the Tamron
I really love both Canon and Tamron. Imo for the price tag it shouldn't be hunting. I have the Canon 24-70. Like it alot. Funny thing is I have the Tokina 24-70 also. And like it even more than Canon! Nice video brother!
Maybe that was just my copy, I have heard someone else say the same thing though. But for the price its pretty legit if you cant afford the Canon/Nikon version.
Eric Rossi Tamron gets the vote for me on giving you a lens hood with your lens for me too. Canon gets stingy with that lol. It's like buying pizza then it has no cheese on it. 😂
I own the G1 but also used G2, G2 is noticeably quicker and feels better in the hand,a little sharper if you pixel peep.....is it worth the upgrade G1-G2? In my opinion NO the difference is so little I’d wait for the G3 when it comes
I hav a question I bought the Tamron 24-70 at B&H and for some reason on manual mood at 70 I get erro1 on my 80d bit If i switch to tv or av or auto the 70 works perfect i have already clean the lens mount when I try video on manual mood i get black like but i switch to auto or other mood works just fine my other lens do not do that is the lens bad did I have any issue with the canon 80d on the Tamron lens
Tamron is a much better buy hands down. Image quality is pretty much a wash and for a lower price you get VC and slightly beefier construction. There's also the 6 year warranty.
Thats not true, the IQ renders better with Canon's. but value wise, if you need VC then it makes sense to get the Tamron. Just comes down to what you want and some slight trade offs. But Tamron does make great lenses now!
When I look at 3rd party lens I put it like this if I’m paying less for said 3rd party I always expect it to be less efficient than say nikon or canon just because I’m paying less, the argument then falls into this,is the money I’m saving meaning I’m getting an inferior lens when comparing like for like and in this video shows in your opinion the Tamron is not as good focusing at 70mm but then better in video....so on your video buy the canon for end sharpness, build, and it’ll cost you more, buy the Tamron for VC and better video focus, and save cash
I had the Tamron and it sucked! Then I bought the Canon and it is amazing! The Tamron VC is no advantage, if the photos are blurred beacuse of poor optics!
I bought the Tamron 24-70 G2 for canon, and to be honest it sucks, when at 70mm at 2.8 it was very soft, lost a lot of sharpness, and through all the range never managed to nail focus, I micro adjusted my camera for the lens and same results, very soft images, I wouldn't recommend it, GO CANON! or sigma
Hahaha well the moment you said go for Sigma, you just showed that you can not tell the difference between good lens and bad lens. How can I take a recommendation from someone like you. The Sigma is worst than any 24-70 in the market, and it is no way near absolutely no way near the Tamron 24-70. You don’t believe me then go ahead and do some homework.
Bought a G2, tested it and the focus was always a few centimetres out Traded it for another one and said either they give me one that's perfect with my camera or I want my money back They tested a different one with my camera and traded, now it's perfect
I’m gonna DIY a red ring on my Tamron.
lol send me a pic when you are done
))))
Lol because you don't like the gold ring?
😂

That VC sold me! Purchased this Tamron glass and I cant believe why I hold of for too long.

Really insightful, and just what I needed, Thanks Eric!

well out of the 3 im taking the Canon II lol. Not a ton meaning, not that big of a difference between the Canon I and Tamron

Tamron G2 -> 1250,-€ vs Canon usm II -> 1333,-€ isn't that big difference. the price isn't an argument. its all about glass vs image stab.
In US, Tamron G2 -> $1199, Canon USM II -> $1699
Canon is waaaay more expensive in my country, guess it depends on market strength
Is it worth upgrading from tamron first version to G2 ?
I feel it it, much faster. But thats only if you feel the first version is holding you back in any way
I own the G1 but also used G2, G2 is noticeably quicker and feels better in the hand,a little sharper if you pixel peep.....is it worth the upgrade G1-G2? In my opinion NO the difference is so little I’d wait for the G3 when it comes
Hi Eric, how about the VC. Is the VC in G2 a big improvement from G1's or there is not much big difference ?
How about for video? Does vibration control help with video???
Subir Thapa Yes very worthwhile upgrade, the difference is huge.
Nice review!
thanks man
Is it only me noticing focus breathing in Tamron lens during dual pixel AF test?
I did too and it's pretty annoying
I hav a question I bought the Tamron 24-70 at B&H and for some reason on manual mood at 70 I get erro1 on my 80d bit If i switch to tv or av or auto the 70 works perfect i have already clean the lens mount when I try video on manual mood i get black like but i switch to auto or other mood works just fine my other lens do not do that is the lens bad did I have any issue with the canon 80d on the Tamron lens
I have no idea why that would do that
Tamron is a much better buy hands down.
Good video! I also have the Tamron lens and love the performance Thanks
thanks, yeah they did a really good job with this version
When I look at 3rd party lens I put it like this if I’m paying less for said 3rd party I always expect it to be less efficient than say nikon or canon just because I’m paying less, the argument then falls into this,is the money I’m saving meaning I’m getting an inferior lens when comparing like for like and in this video shows in your opinion the Tamron is not as good focusing at 70mm but then better in video....so on your video buy the canon for end sharpness, build, and it’ll cost you more, buy the Tamron for VC and better video focus, and save cash
100%, very well said man. But sadly people feel you can get all in one and always save money. Photography is just expensive lol
honest, fair assessment.
thank you
Any focus breathing? Thank you!
it does but like most lenses
af for photography (tamron) is good?
Yes, auto focus works great.
I would rather save up the cash and by the Canon every time. Buy once and cry once.
Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 or the Canon 24-70 2.8 mark I
I do photo and video
I'd prolly still go with the Canon
I had the Tamron and it sucked! Then I bought the Canon and it is amazing! The Tamron VC is no advantage, if the photos are blurred beacuse of poor optics!
I bought the Tamron 24-70 G2 for canon, and to be honest it sucks, when at 70mm at 2.8 it was very soft, lost a lot of sharpness, and through all the range never managed to nail focus, I micro adjusted my camera for the lens and same results, very soft images, I wouldn't recommend it, GO CANON! or sigma
Mine is very sharp. I would trade it in. 6 year warranty.
10 year in Canada!
Bought a G2, tested it and the focus was always a few centimetres out
Traded it for another one and said either they give me one that's perfect with my camera or I want my money back
They tested a different one with my camera and traded, now it's perfect
I'm preferred the canon color. Tamron color is way too yellowish for my taste.
Many people enjoy what Canon offers, they still do that right!
Thank you !
anytime!
Mabe just one question : you told the tamron has some difficulties focusing at the 70mm end ? or was it too slow ? thanks =)
it mainly just hunted at times, so it had focusing issues. Not every time, just something to note
oh ok then, thank you for this precision ;)
If you shoot real world.....you allways need VC or IS😉 especially in lowlight or slow shutterspeed
IS = More Weight.
