This lens is the latest I have in my bag from Sigma having already purchased a number of Art Series lenses as well as the 100-400mm Contemporary. I tested it this past weekend at a Cycling event here in Perth, Australia with amazing results. Even with head on downhill speeds approaching 60 kmh and filling the frame, this lens didn't miss. It is an outstanding piece of equipment.
The review I have been waiting for. You made the choice pretty easy! I'll be picking up the Sigma soon and cannot wait to get it. Keep up the great work and thank you!
Awesome review Jared! They both look really good. As a Canon shooter I personally would get a Canon 70-200 II used. Besides that we all should consider Sigma and Tamron.
I was waiting for this video, since Nikon version just being released, would be great to see a real world review with that one against the nikon 70-200 versions VR versions. Anyone else agree?
Tremendous real world comparison, as usual, Jared. You're the best out there at testing, comparing and reviewing cameras and lenses. Even someone like Michael the Maven, who puts in a tremendous effort with his comparisons, doesn't do truly real world reviews. He shoots "set up" scenarios. A girl jogging on a field is nothing like a bunch of overlapping people moving erratically and competing for a ball (and competing for the camera's AF attention at the same time). I love the way you demonstrate that almost any camera can get the job done, while other reviewers try to convince us we need the latest and greatest camera to capture a good shot, which is utter nonsense. Your efforts are truly appreciated.
I think the best test for comparison would be to shoot these lenses outdoors because I believe the version III canon 70-200 has updated lens coating and I wonder how it holds up against sun flares/haze over the Sigma. I think anyone looking to buy these lenses are mostly going to be wedding photographers that sometimes shoot outdoor weddings
I used it indoors in a tough lighting situation. You can not assume that mostly wedding photographers will be buying this lens. This is a staple or should be a staple of every full frame photographers bag. 24-70 and 70-200. Following down the road would be other specialty lenses.
@@Darthbishop no way: 70-200/2.8 II is really the same as the III version, just 1 coating missing. not worth upgrading to the mkIII and since this Sigma sport and Tamron G2 looks very similar for picture quality - why would you upgrade? (I have the mkII and won't spend money changing it :D )
Great review Jared. I'm currently in the market for the canon 70-200 but I plan to buy a used lens. There is a lot of pretty good deals out there for around $1100 bucks. Keep up the great reviews!
Thanks man for the very detailed but non-boring analysis. I'm a big fan of Sigma on EOS but you're right, the focus on moving subjects is not easy. Sometimes I focus manually.
Hey Jared. Thanks for the enthusiastic video on this lens.. I shoot with the Crop lens of a 70D and have this lens. It's my first go-to lens since I purchased the Camera 4 years ago. Great lens!
14:20 I actually prefer the look as it is, you can see the hopes and dreams in the audience if you so choose to, and if it was a decisive moment in the game it would have been a really good thing to include. It's not distracting, there's a clear separation, but if you completely blow out the audience, what's the purpose of the game? The audience is an important part of team sports and a good component to include to contribute to the atmosphere of the photo.
@Jared Polin .. i gotta say i really love your Reviews as there is no BS nor bias towards one Lens or the other just good honest feedback on how they perform in real world situations ..
Came back to this Video since I see a Sigma 70-200 close with good price... forget the glass.. I appreciate you being human and missing focus on the eye a few times and comming clean and saying.. it's not the lens.. that is why we follow you. Thank you Jared. keep it up!
On one of your videos you were able to review the contemporary lens for Sigma then that's when I decided to go for it. Some of us have photography as hobby and not able to afford expensive lenses. A year I got the Sigma contemporary lens 150-600mm ; then few days ago I purchased a used Canon 70-200 2.8 USM without IS. Thank you for taking the time to review both lenses.
Fantastic video, Jared! You were thorough and fair. And everyone knows that as Tony and Chelsea always say, “Canon glass is awesome!” Yet you make a great case for the Sigma and for a non-professional, that might be the way to go. Also loved the way you put the EOS R to work in Temple’s gym. Great photos!
I think the main issue with Sigma has been that they haven't had the necessary access to get a similar level of integration. I personally haven't had issues with 3rd party lenses.
I bought the Sigma today, I am definitely a beginner level and have two cropped cameras, my original Rebel t7i which I loved to learn on, and now my Canon 90d. This is the one I will be using with the lens. I have being doing some wildlife and outdoor desert shooting so I bit the bullet and added the 70-200mm 2.8 to my bag. Like you the store guy who has the Canon couldn’t justify the extra $600 for my level and needs. Thank you the video did calm me down after dropping a lot of money!!
I love Jared’s content! Always quick to the point and he explains everything with perfection. Solid content! I give this a 10 out 10. His podcast are dope too! A real person, doing real quality content! My go too!
One critical point I’d love to see covered - how well the Warranty’s are covered and how quickly repairs are made.. Canon’s CPS Service is fantastic and often “on site” at major events. CPS is one major reason for some of the price differences in these products, and why you see so many real Pro’s are sticking with Canon. Coupled with their “loaner program”, their Pro Service means money in the bank.
I bought the Sigma 70-200 in early January I doubted myself for not buying the Canon 70-200. I couldn’t find very many if any video or written reviews on it. Just a bunch of content hyping it up. This video made me feel 10000x better about the purchase.
Just got my Sigma today, image quality is superb but I can’t stand how the tri pod collar can’t be taken all the way off. It would also be really helpful to have the zoom ring up front where the focus ring is instead
Jared - Awesome video, as usual. I have an EOS R with the EF adapter. I'm looking at getting the Sigma 70-200 with the 2x extender. Any concerns for image quality with all this on the camera at once?
The lenses from the EF mount should work natively on the RF mount when using a native EF to RF adapter. What will you use this combination for, especially with the extender? I would never recommend a 2x extender. If you need the also reach, get another lens, use a 1.4x or crop a bit. If it’s for sports, you might be better with a Sigma 120-300mm S or Canon 300mm f/2.8L. If it’s for wildlife photography, I wouldn’t get anything less than 400mm. 70-200mm + 2x extender is not a good choice for wildlife photography. It would be better just going for the 100-400mm II or Canon 400mm f/5.6L.
@@bamit1979 rumor is that the 70-200 and 100-400 for native e mount were going to be released after the 24-70 which was just released last month. no point adapting it for a video if it's going to have a native variant released shortly
I currently own the Sigma Sport and I absolutely love it!. I find it hard to believe that the Canon lens can produce better/sharper images. I think I might loan the Canon lens and try my own real life review
Hey man, congrats on your work! From this day I will follow your videos. I think you explain yourself so clear and your tests and knowledge are so helpful. I think I'll go with the Sigma, I'm used to carry weight in my photography journeys in the mountains. ;)
Jared, you should do a comparison between 70-200 2.8 Tamron G2, Sigma Sports, or Nikon VR2. G2, Sports and used VR2 are all very similar in price, once the Sigma for Nikon is released
Honestly like you said, these are two greats lenses. It depends on the personal choice of the buyer. Like me, my equipment is Canon since always. Thank you Jarod for all your tecnical informations, I never miss one! Have a nice day! Guy
Perfectly timed video Fro! I'm looking at upgrading to a f/2.8 lens for my Canon EOS-R to shoot high school lacrosse. I'm not entirely sure the 70-200 gives me enough reach (currently use Canon 100-400) but it might be my best option since games are in the evenings, under the lights and I really need a f/2.8 lens. Not sure there's another lens out there (under $2,000) that's going to match up. Any suggestions??? Thanks for all the great content!
I've also heard it works well with the MC-11, but would like to see a review like this that puts it to the test in a real world sport shooting condition, on either the A9 or A7III.
Always respect your lack of bias when looking at gear Jared. Good review. Both pretty incredible lenses, the Sigma is astounding for the price. I have a Canon 6D Mark ii and think it is pretty remarkable for the price
I made my decision for a few weeks for the Canon in via Amazon and the Canon winter sale and get for 1870 € compared to price of 2300€ in the Canon online store. And it’s a great lens! I really enjoy the photos made with this lens.
This is an older video, so not sure if I will get a reply BUTT............ )) I have a Sony A7R4 and no where near the budget to get the Sony 70-200 lens. I have been waiting 10000 years for Sigma to bring out their 70 - 200 but there is no sign of it being released any time soon. (Unless you listen to Sony Rumors, who rumor it will be out this coming last decade ago) I'd love to take some quality Sports (Biking/Skiing etc) and Landscape photography but I don't know which cheaper glass to invest in? You have a video reviewing the 70-180 Tamron, but I'm not sure how that would cope in a sports environment (plus missing out on 20mm feels like it could be annoying) ((That's what she said)) Maybe I could buy the Cannon 70 - 200 F4 with an adapter, but that's still pricey and I might need that better 2.8 aperture in wood/shaded environments. OR The Sigma 70 - 200 2.8 with the Canon to Sony Adapter? Would the auto focus be fast enough? Do you have any future plans to help us mere miniscule money mortals? I would love a real world review so I could see what the best alternative options are.
Jared & FroKnows Team, thanks for this comparison video. I pleased to hear that the big third party names are improving their offerings. Although the Sigma is heavier and has a larger filter thread size, Sigma gives 3-year warranty compared to 1-yr for Canon. QUESTION: Jared, are the buttons on the Sigma programable to toggle between AF Single and AF Servo or initiate the viewfinder level? Thanks in advance.
@@thewritinglefty4889 Leica, Sigma and Panasonic are all L mount lenses, meaning they are interchangeable. Therefore you do not need an adapter. That's one heck of an alliance! Big savings there if you have more than one L-Mount brand.
Sigma has a strange fascination with making their gear HEAVY. Even here they give their lens a bigger front element than everyone else - likely to improve corner sharpness and vignetting. Personally I'd prefer not to break my back carrying it around, but that's going to be a highly subjective thing. Good to have the option I guess.
With modern cameras, you can usually fix the vignetting during raw conversion. Having that larger lens does cause issues that are more of a pain than running a filter to fix the vignetting.
As usual, fantastic review. You give all keys to do the best choice, thanks. 600$ cheaper but 300g heavier than the canon III that’s the question. We have to consider also the old canon version II which is very good too.
Also keep in mind that these are high end lenses, you're not likely to be replacing them unless they're destroyed, stolen or you switch systems. Over the course of a career, or even just hobby, the cost of a lens of this price isn't that much. Back in the days of film when you had to be paying per shot, you could easily hit this kind of cost in a couple years if you were doing a lot. Developing, even at home, isn't the cheapest thing in the world.
Why do people complain about the 6D2 AF points being “clustered”? When you ask what AF point they use they will say that they only use the center AF point when shooting in Single Shot mode. Even when they use AI Servo tracking in a Canon body, still they only use the center AF point and the surrounding 4/8 AF points as AF assist points.
One little thing you didn’t touch on but I think makes a difference... all of these cameras *nailed* the skin tone on these players. Yes darker skin is tougher to shoot but I’m willing to bet you didn’t do any EV adjustments. Both lenses and cameras handled it very well. All of your other points are solid and it does matter that you can flat out shoot. In the hands of a newbie they may see the difference with the weight and handling of the Sigma vs. the Canon. Plus the psychological effect of spending $2k on a lens makes it seem to perform better overall. Your review cut right though that. Great vid!
Ok Jared. At 17:40, when I look through the viewfinder that single point focus marker isn’t differentiating between the eye and eyelash. I’m not sure I agree with that point. I wouldn’t see how you you could say YOU missed that focus by that little. I’d say the canon prolly hit a little better there.
No editing at all? Wow. White balance? Vibrance? HSL? Nice pics. I've been curious about the EOS R in this type of setting (indoor sports). Thanks, i already have the Canon lens, just need the camera now.
I don't get it! Why no steady studio or outside tripod shots to establish which renders best? How can a subjective view of their resolving performance be established at ISO 3200 and moving subjects in a dimly lit gymnasium? Speed of AF and ease of use ok but what about resolving power?
Thanks Jared, I found this very helpful. I bought the Sigma and use it on the EOS RP. It works fine and the images are as super sharp as you say, the bokeh is nice and the weight is actually ok. I found the autofocus to be sluggish though and I'm still contemplating, if I can live with that, but probably will, because the image quality is so fantastic and the price is right.
@@damjanstijovic1208 Yes, that was my impression. I traded it for the Tamron a week later and found it worked better with the autofocus. But that's just me.
I just bought the new Sigma to replace my old SIGMA which weighs in at 2lbs. 9oz. This new lens is a TANK! I don’t think I’ll keep it. It’s very unwieldy for the fast moving action of ice hockey. Now conflicted between this Canon lens or the RF Canon 70-200 as I’ve purchased and waiting for a CANON EOS R6 to arrive...Two concerns...price of the RF version ($2,700!) and the extending lens when zooming. It’s great to have in the bag to make it easier to carry, but often I have to take photos from behind the glass at games and use a rubber hood to press against the glass. If my lens is extending and retracting all the time, I’ll have to wear rollerblades to keep moving since I don’t want to push through the glass! So, I think I may have answered my own question..get the EF lens with the adapter and have fun.
It seems the biggest complaints from those that have purchased and reviewed their Sigma lenses through Amazon, Adorama, B&H is the inconsistency of quality control. Some copies are better than others. I'd like to see some lab testing with different focus charts, particularly with Sigma, for resolution, aberration and vignetting. For the budget minded this would be a good start, or Tamron.
I had the original 70-200 from sigma, always had trouble to get consistent focus on my 7D. I once rented the canon 70-200, non IS, mark I. consistent focus, sharpness even at 2.8. I kept my beloved sigma for 16 years (because heh, even if many shots were missed even if the af points were ok, i wont lie : i could manage to get nice pictures on a full event), but i moved to the canon mkIII version.
Needing a 200mm for portraits, I was looking at the Canon, Tamron, and Sigma. The Tamron was in the lead for a while until I saw comparison images and noticed the Tamron has MASSIVE focus breathing at 200mm. The Sigma has virtually none, so now it’s between Sigma and Canon.
Nice review, I have the Cannon 2.8 70-200 II and it's the best and worst lens I have. The best: because you can use it everywhere. The worst: It's so heavy. But all in all - I can't live without it.
I own the 70-200 mm sigma 2.8 Non IS and although it's an oldy, it still stands its ground!! Great lens made by a great manufacture! I still don't understand why ppl would spend the colosal $$ on a red circle!
Thanks Fro. I went to two different stores today and just about put down my money to take the Canon home but thought I would watch a few more videos and came across this one. $600 is a big difference. I only want to buy it once. Ultimately, I think we justify what we want anyway but I do like other Sigma products that I have or have had. At the end of the day, using it with my SkyGuideer Pro, the lighter weight does make a difference and I will probably get back in my car and go by the Canon anyway. Seems like the sharpness, clarity, and noise were better with the Canon.

Jared was incorrect. The Canon bodies do have electronic image stabilization in video modes. Canon has had a different philosophy when it coms to image stabilization. Because lenses can vary widely in length, lenses can have different stabilization requirements. Canon feels image stabilization is best done in the lens.
I bought the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 a year and a half ago!after 2 months use I gave it to my littlebrother!I should have paid up the 500 dollars extra for the tamron version!damn it was slow at focusing and noisy!
The one thing I'd have liked to have known would have been which zoom was quieter during autofocus. I have a Sigma 18-35 for video and that thing sounds like ropes on a sailboat.
It's really great to see Tamron and Sigma making glass as good as the big manufacturers like Canon and at a lower price too. Makes it easier for the non professionnals to get good glass.
Especially now that Sigma's native L mount will see greater use. Their lenses and MC-21 adaptor are first-party there, so you can have a set of Sigma lenses and have whichever Panasonic or Sony or Canon camera that you like for that generation - very versatile.
Well said. Excellent point! I'm not a pro. I just want sharp sports photography of my high school athlete so we can not only have great memories but so we can create reels for his college athletic career (fingers crossed)
you didn't talk about lens breathing, in general canon lens is exactly 200mm but tamron G2 is 170mm due to focus breathing and sigma sports is 190mm. The price difference visible in focus breathing.

Tamás Szügyi good points!
way less flaring than the ver2 of the canon L lens. photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1503975 Reviewed it a month ago
Great lens!
Hi, you mean the Sigma?
Sigma Killin it! We need more third party options!
I brought the canon version 3 right when it came out and it is a great lens, but sigma is really stepping up their game.
Northrup. Is ANYONE still taking these guys seriously?
I bought the Sigma today, I am definitely a beginner level and have two cropped cameras, my original Rebel t7i which I loved to learn on, and now my Canon 90d. This is the one I will be using with the lens. I have being doing some wildlife and outdoor desert shooting so I bit the bullet and added the 70-200mm 2.8 to my bag. Like you the store guy who has the Canon couldn’t justify the extra $600 for my level and needs. Thank you the video did calm me down after dropping a lot of money!!
cant wait for the next 1dx.
I bought the Sigma 70-200 in early January
I doubted myself for not buying the Canon 70-200.
I couldn’t find very many if any video or written reviews on it. Just a bunch of content hyping it up.
This video made me feel 10000x better about the purchase.
Did the weight bothers you a lot?
Am choosing between the tamron and sigma and I am still choosing between those 2😂
Is there a review of the Sigma compared to the Nikon yet? Can’t wait and thank you!! Great stuff!
Hi Jared: the question is: how does this Sigma compare to the Tamron 70-200 G2 ?????? Eager to know (please)
Thank you!! I feel like that comparison is way more useful since they're both new lenses, both third party and both at a similar price point
I'm in the same boat and would like to know as well!
Just the review I needed. Thanks for the effort and putting this videos out, Jared, much appreciated!
Hope you do this test with the MC11 adapter for us sony guys aswell!
Yep. You owe us! I bought A7iii after your review :D
@@bamit1979 rumor is that the 70-200 and 100-400 for native e mount were going to be released after the 24-70 which was just released last month. no point adapting it for a video if it's going to have a native variant released shortly
@@ynwadhd The 70-200mm E-mount will only be F4.
I currently own the Sigma Sport and I absolutely love it!. I find it hard to believe that the Canon lens can produce better/sharper images. I think I might loan the Canon lens and try my own real life review
Can't wait for the 70-200 f2.8 RF to drop.
Thanks for the review. I’m happy to see that the Sigma works well on the EOS R.
Quality work. And excellent showcase of how a non-sports camera like the R can do it when being used properly.
thank you so much for testing the sigma with the EOS R as I'm going to do the same for sports photos.
I would've like to see some real world photos during daylight where they were shot in 100-400 ISO,
Also some video AF examples would be nice.
Af motor is in body
Not sure where you're located but it's great to see ECU in action! Thank you for that. Also enjoyed the thorough and informative review.
Jared outstanding breakdown! Thanks for taking the time to provide such detail analysis it helped with figuring out which one I am getting.
I'd like to see this lens made for Sony E
that would be cool.
it works fine with the mc-11 adapter
@@froknowsphoto If you tested this lens on the a9 with the mc-11 sony users would be very grateful!
That's exactly what I want too. I understand it is FF. Would it work well on an a6500?
This is an older video, so not sure if I will get a reply BUTT............ ))
I have a Sony A7R4 and no where near the budget to get the Sony 70-200 lens. I have been waiting 10000 years for Sigma to bring out their 70 - 200 but there is no sign of it being released any time soon. (Unless you listen to Sony Rumors, who rumor it will be out this coming last decade ago)
I'd love to take some quality Sports (Biking/Skiing etc) and Landscape photography but I don't know which cheaper glass to invest in?
You have a video reviewing the 70-180 Tamron, but I'm not sure how that would cope in a sports environment (plus missing out on 20mm feels like it could be annoying) ((That's what she said))
Maybe I could buy the Cannon 70 - 200 F4 with an adapter, but that's still pricey and I might need that better 2.8 aperture in wood/shaded environments.
OR
The Sigma 70 - 200 2.8 with the Canon to Sony Adapter?
I just purchased Canon R6 because of you :) Great review again! :)
The “L Mount Alliance!” Never gets old! 😂😂
context?
@@thewritinglefty4889 Leica, Sigma and Panasonic are all L mount lenses, meaning they are interchangeable. Therefore you do not need an adapter. That's one heck of an alliance! Big savings there if you have more than one L-Mount brand.
@@a.deraville362 i think in the feture tamron is also goning to make l mount lenses.
Very helpful as always! Thank you so much Jared!
Great vid!
Really great job with this review Jared! This is a lens that I’m definitely looking forward to purchasing.
Great review its so detailed and realistic! I allways love your reviews and kodus to your team for the hard work God bless you Fro!....
Great video as usual! I got the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 ex os hsm on my old Canon 6D and I'm happy with the result.
I don't get it! Why no steady studio or outside tripod shots to establish which renders best? How can a subjective view of their resolving performance be established at ISO 3200 and moving subjects in a dimly lit gymnasium? Speed of AF and ease of use ok but what about resolving power?
nice review and thx for testing on the eos R
Thanks Jared, I found this very helpful. I bought the Sigma and use it on the EOS RP. It works fine and the images are as super sharp as you say, the bokeh is nice and the weight is actually ok. I found the autofocus to be sluggish though and I'm still contemplating, if I can live with that, but probably will, because the image quality is so fantastic and the price is right.
Slugish???? 4 real... Fist time i read this???
@@damjanstijovic1208 Yes, that was my impression. I traded it for the Tamron a week later and found it worked better with the autofocus. But that's just me.

for me the question is... the tamron or the sigma ?
But, but... you can't shoot sports with an EOS R or a 6DII...
You need the Alpha 9 focus for that.
Or the 1dx2 one 😉
Ashmodai I shoot sports with my 6D ll and it works fine
Technically No, for Lazy yes... Jared showed it you... how to do it.... but ur right hit or miss chances 🤭

I don't do lab testing.
Is it my imagination or do the images from the Canon lens have more "pop".
Idk. Regardless though you there's a slider or two for that in lightroom
Yes, Temple University! Go Owls! Do you have any examples of the gymnastic meets?
Nice review, I have the Cannon 2.8 70-200 II and it's the best and worst lens I have. The best: because you can use it everywhere. The worst: It's so heavy. But all in all - I can't live without it.
I own the 70-200 mm sigma 2.8 Non IS and although it's an oldy, it still stands its ground!! Great lens made by a great manufacture! I still don't understand why ppl would spend the colosal $$ on a red circle!
Which one is better Tamron or the sigma!
Uncle Buck sigma for sure.
If you have to pick between the sigma and tamron

Jared was incorrect. The Canon bodies do have electronic image stabilization in video modes.
Canon has had a different philosophy when it coms to image stabilization. Because lenses can vary widely in length, lenses can have different stabilization requirements. Canon feels image stabilization is best done in the lens.
I got the 70 200 f4 nikon I will probably buy the tamron G2...
Jonathan BIZET you won’t regret it. G2 is incredible
@@fellowcitizen I bought a Tamron 70-200mm G2 lens a few weeks ago. Haven't used it yet, I still need to calibrate it with the TAP in onsole.
