I was always into photography, since I was 7 and got my first camera. But when I came to taking up my photography to the pro level I got all caught up in what lens, who’s using what, maybe this or that. If I’d only gone for these three I would have had a solid foundation. I did go with the 70-200 then a bunch of primes and a monster 28-300 pump action bazooka. Made so many bad choices with my lenses and other kit too.
No matter what you’re going to shoot, the Holy Trinity will be able to get you the shots you need, by and large.
I have now got the 24-70 f4 with IS because the 2.8’s don’t have IS. I tend to shoot it f4-6.3 so I don’t need the 2.8, except for when I do. That’s the thing with photography, there’s always another piece of kit that’ll work better for a particular scenario.
Beyond the Holy Trinity you need to know what you’re shooting to decide what kit you need. Decide on a budget, stick to it and get the best kit you can. Investing in good lenses is always better than a new camera.

Do you think its better to buy ef 24-70 f4 or rf 24-105 f4?

    • @JonathanThompsonStoryteller
      @JonathanThompsonStoryteller Год назад

@@andredo4880 that would depend on what you’re shooting and the environment too.
The mk2 version of the EF 24-105 is much improved on the old one which is a bit of a dog really. It depends if you use the range between 70 & 105. Or perhaps the 24-70 is good for your zoom then jump straight to the 100 macro which is what I do.
If you’re shooting some video the extra focal length of the 24-105 might be useful. Again it all depends on what & how you shoot

    • @andredo4880

I got into photography before I had kids, so I started with the 24-70 and 70-200, both L series and f2.8 and they were brilliant investments. 15 years later, lots of wedding and portraits and family photos later, I’ve only needed one diaphragm replacement on the 24-70. Otherwise, no problems.
I added the 17-40 f4 later, and a 1.4x converter (should’ve gone the 2x) and it all fits in a backpack, along with a flash, camera body obviously, and battery charger.
Yes it was expensive but good quality gear will literally last for decades if looked after, and the image quality is undeniable. It’s worth saving up for, if your circumstances allow.

This is great advice. Makes for a nice tidy package that fits in a regular size camera backpack. If one is on a budget I'd say do whatever you can to save for the 70-200 f/2.8 II. It's one of the best lenses ever made. The other two at f/4 are both great lenses and will be very adequate for most photographers. They are sharper than the 2.8s and way less expensive. The 24-70 has macro at 70, a nice bonus, and both are image stabilized, which helps you get a little slower shutter speed to let in more light at f/4.

For my now retired Canon film I have more lenses than space to store them, and used to obsess over which ones to take whenever I left the house. Today it's so much simpler having just the three. Now I shoot to what I have, instead of spending half my time thinking about which lens would work best.

For me I wanted the 70-200 however I have a little different approach. I shoot on the 1DXii so photo and video combo was a must for me. My lens kit is this so far and I think it's pretty solid.
    * 17-40mm Canon F4 - Love for Landscapes and super wide angle or city shots.
    * 24-105mm Canon F4 - LOVE LOVE this lens. It's on my camera pretty much 80% of the time. Perfect for wide angle and zoomed in for closer action "My go to Video Lens too because of IS"
    * 85mm Canon 1.8 - Sure I don't have the Cash for the the amazing 1.2 or 1.4 IS but this lens ROCKS! and it was $250 used for a perfect sample. Portraits galore with this lens and it's small fast and light weight.
    * 400mm Canon 5.6 - Sure sure it's no 2.8 or even 4 but let me tell you it is a solid contender. I shoot some surf from the shore or even some action sports here and there and usually during the daytime when it's sunny and this thing is so great. Pending subject to background distance the out of focus area is just great. I picked it up used for about $680 and even in lower light I'm still shooting ISO maybe 800-1000 which is nothing on the 1DXii and I can get amazing shots with still a 1/500 - 1/2000 of a shutter speed no issue. It's also really light and even on a tripod I can manage great video out of it too! Just my preference.
BONUS - I also have the OG 80-200mm Canon 2.8 "Magic Drain Pipe" and this is a beast of a lens. For people who are on a budget I got this from Japan for $450 bucks pretty much brand new looking. Original box and everything. Shoots fantastic images and is super sharp.

I agree w/the lens choices -- those are fantastic -- but I'm glad you emphasized *FIGURE OUT WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY YOU ARE/WANT TO DO* bc that's far more important! That's what I tell people asking about what type of gear/lenses they should get.
Especially bc of the cost of lenses, to get full value, ppl need to spend some time figuring out how they "see" the world. I thought my kit would be 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200, as well, however turns out when I started playing with the telephoto range, I always cranked it straight to the furthest zoom available.
If I got the 70-200, like intended, it wouldn't serve me bc I'd only really use the 100-200 portion. So now I'm looking at 150-600, much better investment for me.

For me, the challenge is that I like doing things that require 300 or even 400mm lenses, and if I do anything below 100, it's either macro, or something very specific. My main challenge is being limited by how wide my lenses can get, mostly due to what I can afford. The 200-400 F/4L is probably the lens for me. But also, that's more than I'm spending any time soon as a non pro.

Hi mr McKinnon! Your suggestion is more like to cover all the range of focal lengths but, in my opinion, not the holy trinity of lenses.
I'd keep the two lenses of telezoom and widezoom such as 70-200mm and 16-35mm and.. aaannddd for that mid range my suggestion IS A 50mm.
those 24-70ish lenses are just to stuffed with different glasses to do the job either wide or tele, but the 50mm that clean standard lense... so beautyfull results!!!

If you really want to start taking better pictures don't just focus on lenses: it's the picture that sells. Learn to look for the right moment and make sure you know what settings reproduce that moment on film. Take notes and rethink what you did and must do better next time. Good lenses don't taken good pictures: good photographers do. These lenses are very good but only in the hands of somebody who knows what he's doing. Remember: practise makes perfect!
