I' m still using the Canon EF 700 - 200 2,8 III USM with the Canon 5 D Mark IV since September 2018 . It makes great portraits from the musicans at so many concerts . I really like to use this camera and lens in the next few years . With best wishes from Berlin in germany to all Canon fans in the world.
This video truly made my heart smile. Ive had my 70-200 for 10 yrs now and I'm looking forward to making more memories with it I recently got an 85 and boy is it sharp. But like you said, its a 1 trick pony.
Is it possible to use the RF 2x extender, with the RF-EF converter with this lens? I am confused if I should get an EF teleconverter or an RF teleconverter since I have an R6
@@abhishekshah11 I say no. Use the 1,4x and/or 2x with your 70-200 as mentioned in the above comment. I'm also use my EF 70-200 f/2.8 with both Extenders on my 7D Mark II and R7 (with the EF-RF Mount Adapter -> I have all three Mount Adapters [only Mount Adapter, Mount Adapter with CPL and vND Drop-In flyers, and the version with the control ring]). All this gear (lens with the adapters and combined adapters) together works so great, that's phenomenal what Canon brought us to the table...
I've said it for years! I couldn't agree with you more! The 70-200mm is hands down my ALL-Time favorite portrait lens. I use the EF variant with my R5 and love it. It may be a little weightier than the RF equivalent, but I prefer the build of the EF. The 85mm is a wonderful lens as well. RIght now though, we've been using the RF 28-70 and this thing is slowly starting to become my go-to for portraits and everything else.
I have wanted one of these for a while now. I have been holding out for the version II and a week ago finally got one. It is used but warrantied from a camera shop. Thanks for this video.
Brilliant overview of the 70x200 Many thanks Have been shooting with my lens for quite a few lens, and like you, find it a super lens and certainly my favourite also!!
this is a great video and very informative. Is glad to see very well done videos with great sample photos and centered and not focused only in the latest and shinest gadget. great work
Absolutely yes. I use mine with a Canon 5d II & Sony A7III with a Sigma MC11 adaptor. Eye autofocus is spot on. Also use my Tamron SB 24-70 2.8........ A lens I kept after selling my Canon version simply because I liked the Tamron better. I shoot theatre stuff. Headshots I still use my Canon 5d MkII with the 70.200. Production shots, dress rehearsals and performances, I use the Sony A7III with the Tamron 24-70 2.8. Still make a few bucks.
After bought all my EF L glas, especially at last the 70-200 F.28 L USM, Canon came out with its R-System. But... with the EF/RF adapters (and I have all three versions of the adapter) I can use my good glas on the EOS RP and R7 and the glas works also great at this R-System bodies as on my EOS 7D Mark II, 700D and EOS 500.
I have had one for 15 years now, made beautiful photos with it and now on my R6 it's a better fit than on crop. It gives flexibility when you can't get close, still plenty sharp and it's a good work horse that can take a beating. That being said, for the really special stuff I prefer something a bit wider or the 85/1.2 for the bokeh.
@@RichieColemanSr Yep, and it's plenty sharp and contrasty, even for a mark1. Pixel density isn't that high on the R6 zo that probably helps somewhat. Auto focus is perfect on the R6.
Such a versatile lens. I had the EF 70-200 f2.8 & used it for 17 years, often working 6 days a week on assignments. This lens never let me down & I never had to send it to Canon for any type of repair. The build quality was exceptional & it zoomed internally. The RF version zooms externally & the RF lens does NOT accept a 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverter.
I've been using Canon since 1972 when I purchased the F1 as a young man. Got into DSLR with 5D about 2005 and others cameras and lenses on the way. I've had my eye on the F2.8 70-200 since always but had primes and zooms that covered the range and the expense was also a factor. But happy days this week I picked up a second hand one for $1200 AUD or about $800 USD and its a gem. I use it with a lightweight monopod because it does get heavy. A couple of shots were a little soft but were excellent after running through Topaz AI. Truly a lovely lens.
I have more than 10 lenses and this one is the best one. As you mention, it's a great lens for portrait but I use it also for landscape our sport photography.
I have the original non is version that I use on my R5. With IBIS on the lens takes really sharp pics. I use it for street, portrait and nature photography using a 1.4x or 2x converter. I really can't fault the lens and will be using it for many years to come.
Agree with almost everything you’ve said here, but the point of an 85 prime vs 2.8 zoom is not sharpness, it’s light gathering capacity. You gain 1-1/3, 2, or 2-1/3 stops depending on which EF 85 you choose. 8:37
Nice video, you use a EF 70-200mm IS version, but i still use the EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L USM without IS on my Canon 1D X Mark II, it's super sharp, so i see no reason to upgrade this lens, it still is a robust workhorse, the only lens i have that is sharper is the EF 135mm F/2.0, In the studio i mostly use the 70-200mm in combination with the EF 24-70mm F/2.8 L USM Mark I
You said that if I owns an R6 (which I do) I should go for the RF-version. Maybe, but I'm worried about the external zoom and the VERY long turning on the zoomring, compared to the EF. So I had actually planned to get the EF, and fellow photographers in my network says, that it is just as great as the RF. Did you ever make a comparison of them yourself?
Very informative.. Shooting on a budget.. I have the 70-200mm EF F4 L is version with a Canon 5D3 and for versatility I've never had a better combo.. (Climb 2000 feet with a 2.8 then do it with an F4... Big difference). Totally agree with you though about 24-70mm (thats next).. ..And yes 2000 feet ain't much but I am 60. Great vid. Nice one : )
I’m so thankful for your honest view on this topic. I know, you might get a bit sharper pics with the RF-glass, but this glass is toplevel under all circumstances, and did anyone ever get critics for using this instead of an RF? Most likely not.
I decided to buy R6 II and its EF adapter, the only two lens now i am considering is EF 70-200(Lots of used available) and a new RF 35mm 1.8 I love RF 70-200, but that is out of my budget.

Great video, thank you! In comparison with Canons L - Lens EF 70 - 300 mm ... is it as sharp? Thnx.
I have used this lens on my 5d and 6d for gig photography and it takes amazing images, i have the mkii 2.8 version, i now use it on the r6 and it has a new lease of life, just love this lens, another great portrait lens from Canon is the 135mm f2 L lens
Agree about the 135 f2. Used it for years on mt 5D4 and now on my R5. Love that lens! Sadly, my 70-200 is the EF f4 version. Not a bad lens, but wish I had the 2.8.
Great video! One thing I think is important to say, is that the version you are talking about is the IS mkii. There is an older 2001 version, which was the first 70-200 f2.8 with IS. The mkii is said to be a little bit sharper, but it's more expensive too. Another thing to mention, as an user of an RP camera all the lenses I have are EF ones, used with an adapter. I think buying EF lenses is much cheaper and still a very good quality option for those like me that don't have so much money to buy L RF lenses. Nowadays, an RF 70-200 lens is so much expensive than a version like the one you have.
It's worth noting that while the MKII is sharper, especially at f2.8, the Mk1 is smoother in terms of out of focus areas. I have the Mk1 and use it on my R7.
I had the first one without IS briefly, and fell in love with it, i just ordered this mark III version, it should be here today. i highly recommend picking up a lens plate for the lens collar foot. the basic Arca plate in this video can come loose if you twist it on a tripod with its head locked or set to a stiff setting. Ive had a couple of near misses until i bought mine. just search google for lens plate. If they would have made an EF 24-105 F2.8 L i may not have bothered with anything else lol. I hear its coming for the RF line tho.. cheers
17:05Hello, I have a Canon 90D and an 18/135 lens, and I want to buy a new lens. I am confused about which lens to choose. Should I choose 70/200 or 24/70? I need it to photograph interiors and exteriors at events and weddings. What do you advise me?
Thanks for the wonderful video. Those beautiful images speak for themselves. I am blessed for have both efII and rf but the truth is I have not been able to part with my ef. Your video makes it impossible now. Haha.
Question!! I’m at a loss here. Help me out. What lens is the canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM lens. It’s not the g1 because it has IS. BUT ITS NOT THE G2. So it’s gotta be this one that you did a review on. But wait!! The one I have up on Amazon right now is different by ONE very small thing. The focus button on the side says 1.4 and 2.5. The one in this video says 1.2 and 2.5. This is the ONLY difference I can find in these 2 lenses. And I can’t seem to find another one that says 1.4 on the side by the button. I’m not sure if this makes any since. I’m very confused at what lens I am looking at. Please help. Thank you.
I use the ancient Canon 5DSR. Never thrown the old 70-200 EF fossil onto a new R-type mirrorless camera, but I'm sure they work great. And finally, I use both Photoshop AND Lightroom!
@premiumlightacademy333 Thanks for your feedback. I'm trying to learn how to get better at PS and LR. I just purchased the R6 Mark II, and I am looking to sell my Canon 90D for a 2nd body. I am just trying to figure out what to purchase. I take photos, not video at the moment. My lenses are ef mount. 50mm 1.8, 16-35mm f2.8 l ii usm, 24-70mm f2.8 l ii usm and 70-200mm l ii usm.
Hi, I really enjoy your videos! Love the quality and in-depth information to help me make better informed decisions. Thank you! My favorite portrait lens is the Canon 135mm f2 but I’m also looking at the Sigma 105mm F1.4 and was wondering you you could give your thoughts on it essentially using it with the Canon 5Ds r, I camera which I own and will never sell! 😊 Thanks!
Dear James, the Canon 5DSR is my favorite old dinosaur as well! I don't usually dabble in the Sigma lenses because I'm just a huge canon snob. When folks look at lenses with a very wide aperture (F1.4) something to consider is that you're looking at a razor thin margin of critical focus. You shoot a portrait at F1.4, and one eye is going to be in focus while the other eye is already falling out of focus. It makes things a little too easy to just blow focus all together. In short, I think your 135F2 will blow the Sigma out of the water every day.
@@premiumlightacademy thank you! You make a very good point! You saved me a lot of money and gave me confidence that what I have is plenty good enough! 😊
Seems a lot of trouble to go to in Dec 22, to showcase a lens that was discontinued by Canon in March 21. By the comments, the people this reached are predominantly those who've owned it for years and enjoy being told they made a good decision. In 2023, buy the RF 20-200 f2.8, or the RF 135 f1.8, 85 f1.2 for a portrait primes.
Hi Daemon! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Not everyone has a mirrorless body, or even mirrorless lenses if they do have an RF mount. DSLRs and lenses don't just disappear when they're discontinued. Millions of photographers still own and use them. We try to be inclusive of photographers of every budget. If you just want the newest tech, there are hundreds of copy and paste channels shilling shiny gear they've never actually shot with.
just a correction: no lens is picking up any extra stop because of the EF-RF converter. It is just a flange distance converter with added electronics so the body can talk to the lens.
No not quite right. If you're looking at your phone, things that are further away go out of focus for us BUT the DISTANCE looks like 50 mm SO that's where the magic comes in 70-200 compresses and brings forward the background while the subject is natural
The Canon 70-200s are "light and bright" lenses, adored by brides and their moms, and by cosmetic companies, ad agencies, stock houses, school photographers, and manufacturers. There are lots better lenses for portraits, but there's no denying the 70-200s will get you paid. Sigh - I'm ordering one, as I know it will help my clients sell their wares. The lenses that I find bring out the humanity in faces the best are the 24-105 f/4 L, the 135 F/2, the 35 F/1.4s, and the 50 and 85 1.2s. Sorry to express my views bluntly, but it's been a painful and exhausting journey to discover that - yes, you're right!
I have the 70-200 IS lll. Completely agree! I love this lens. Portraits, ice hockey, weddings, wildlife..you name it. Outstanding lens with my 90D! Get this lens. It will change your life. I also have a 2006 version 28-70. It’s been actuated hundreds of thousands of times. Canon=quality.
Hi Dee, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Not everyone has a mirrorless body, or even mirrorless lenses if they do. DSLRs didn't disappear when they're discontinued. Millions of photographers still own and use them. We try to be inclusive of photographers of every budget. If you just want the newest tech, there are hundreds of copy and paste channels shilling shiny gear they've never actually shot with.
Opinions will vary on this one greatly. I got rid of my 70-200 and adapted a Nikon 105 f2 DC and a Nikon 180mm f2.8 D to my Canon R. These two lenses crush the Canon 70-200 for portraits. I can only use manual focus with them I find that I don't need autofocus to take portraits.
The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is pricier than the latest EF version, but it’s only three-quarters the length (at 70mm) and two-thirds the weight - and that doesn’t include the extra length and weight of the EF mount adapter. Those are massive advantages for the new RF lens1. The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is also more compact than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L III USM at just 5.75″ (146mm) long and 2.35lbs (1070g)2. The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM has image stabilization which is a big plus3. In terms of image quality, there is not much difference between the two lenses. Both are excellent optically3
You're talking about the f2.8L IS, but then you show pictures of the IS II, then you show the price of the IS III 😂 make you're mind up, which one are you talking about?
Let me share some secret. Any Zeiss lens is better than this for portraits. But if you compare it to consumer zooms like Sigma, then - yes, Canon is better.
I' m still using the Canon EF 700 - 200 2,8 III USM with the Canon 5 D Mark IV since September 2018 . It makes great portraits from the musicans at so many concerts . One thing that wasn’t mentioned is that the 70-200 f:2.8 can also be used with the 1.4x and x2.0 teleconverter as an f:4 or f:5.6. Great for wildlife.

Will this lens work with a canon rebel t7
Seems a lot of trouble to go to in Dec 22, to showcase a lens that was discontinued by Canon in March 21. By the comments, the people this reached are predominantly those who've owned it for years and enjoy being told they made a good decision. In 2023, buy the RF 20-200 f2.8, or the RF 135 f1.8, 85 f1.2 for a portrait primes.
Not all of us have R bodies. He did say but RF glass if you have an R body. I'm still using EF.
Hi Daemon! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Not everyone has a mirrorless body, or even mirrorless lenses if they do have an RF mount.
DSLRs and lenses don't just disappear when they're discontinued. Millions of photographers still own and use them.

Would this fit on a M50 with an adapter?
I have the 2.8 and R5 it’s a money maker
This is still a dream lens for me..
Go for it Ceasar! You will not regret this lens. Game changer.
@@premiumlightacademy uhm...do you have some spare 1500$ to borrow?
@@premiumlightacademy I recently bought it second hand.. I love the pictures coming from it.
What hood are you using? The one I have is so big! It uses a lot of space in my camera bag.
I have the 70-200mm 2.8 L III. Worth every penny. The best pictures I have ever taken, were with this lens. A magical piece of gear!
Haha the RF 70-200 F2.8 L is far superior.
@@jasonswift7098 not on an EF mount.
@@Twobarpsi Its a far superior lens overall both EF and RF mount.
I prefer 100/2.8IS macro... much smaller and nicely black :) hate white lenses, they are so huge! no big diff between 70-200 and 100mm angle of view
just a correction: no lens is picking up any extra stop because of the EF-RF converter. It is just a flange distance converter with added electronics so the body can talk to the lens.
the Metabones x0.70 adaptor I was confused, thought did that, but i think its only for video crop, to bring it back to full frame.
5dmkIII 24mm 1.4 + Eos R ef 70-200mm 2.8 setup =)
This is EF version , RF version I like most.
is it the first generation of ef70-200len?or the second generation, or third generation?
I have used Version 1 and Version 2. I can only imagine that Version 3 is incredible!
I wish RUclipsrs would always indicate EF or RF in their titles and descriptions
He is talking about the mark iii version. The title sounds misleading.
im a sony shooter.
sigma 16-28 2.8
sony 50 1.2
sony 70-200 gm2
those are my lenses.
07:49 Yes ..thats why I love this design IFIZ.....the extending barrels is not my favourite.
I found a mint condition 70-200 2.8 III for $1100 on FB Marketplace about a week ago, the deals are out there!
Спасибо за обзор и отличные фото 👌
Awesome video.
As always ( for the first time ), keep up the good work and keep'em flying.
From the Red Planet.....😂
Great lens.
70-200mm is awesome lens

Thank you so much! Keep letting us know what you'd like to see here!
You have the IS version. The non IS version is a lot cheaper and its exactly the same on a tripod.
This video must have been recorded 10 years ago, no? I would go for the RF version.

Ah yes. The magic EF to RF converter that adds a stop of light.
Gives you wrists of steel, worth it
I thought the 85 1.2 was the best!?!
It is for me
The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is pricier than the latest EF version, but it’s only three-quarters the length (at 70mm) and two-thirds the weight - and that doesn’t include the extra length and weight of the EF mount adapter.
How were you able to tell all these. 😂
Well the description says L series
I'd still take the 200 prime for a third of the price and better IQ....
on my 800d this zoons too much 117-270... no use,,,
What
Like the 85mm 1.2 doesn't exist.
The 1.4 is better.
@@mrg6424 I think we all know 1.2 Tonys is better than 1.4 Tonys.
This lense takes all the effort out of your feet
and puts it on your shoulders and neck xD😂
I have the F4. It's fine.
Inferior
Let me share some secret. Any Zeiss lens is better than this for portraits.
But if you compare it to consumer zooms like Sigma, then - yes, Canon is better.
на больших фокусных объектив делает толще фигуру и лицо 🤫
Салам алейкум.
What's surreal is this guy taking a theatrical breath and himself too seriously.
Wrong.
I hate this lens because it weighs a TON. I rather use the 85mm any day! Because of this, 70-200mm is NOT the greatest portrait lens of all time.
Joke?
I would beg to differ.. I’ve make a King’s Ransom with the Lens.
@@pureheartvisuals yeah, I shoot basketball with the lens, where I'm always moving, and I'm fine holding it up.
Go to a gym and workout
How many pronouns you got 😂, 🤣
Is there much difference between the original the Mk II etc?
