Bought the ii used for around 1000 and ever been impressed with the images out of it. It has weight yes. It's old yes. But is it a great lens? Definitely.
I've had two of these lenses and NEVER felt the need to fork out extra for the mk iii version (actually the first was a refurbished lens that was awful so I returned it and paid the small difference for a brand new copy). The current lens I recently purchased used, is stunning on my 1DX mkii.
Completely agree! They don’t make the mk II anymore but I’m definitely glad I got it because I would recommend people get a used mkii than the mkiii but sorry to hear that your first one was so awful!
Hi! I'm thinking of buying my first (higher-grade) lens, wanting it to be a 70-200 f2.8 as this suits my style of photography most (horse/equine photography). Within my budget I've brought it down to the following two lenses: the tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 and the canon EF 70-200 f2.8 II (mark 2). The price difference (used) is about 100€ (canon being more expensive in my country), so it's quite close to each other. But I don't know which lens is the better one...I know the canon is 7 years older, but it does seem to hold up quite nicely. And from the tamron G2 I see extremely positive reviews coming by. But how do these lenses compare? Which lens is (objectively) the better lens when it comes to image quality, sharpness, stabilisation, etc?
Is the difference between the 2nd and 3rd version really that immense when it comes to back-lightning and sharpness ? I am very unsure wether to buy the ii or the iii because of the fact - but I am not sure if it justifies the 600€ more….
In my honest opinion and with all my research online, it would depend on what you shoot but I’d say stick with the II because there’s not that much of a difference. The mechanics and glass are the same in both versions but the difference with the III is that there’s a special coating that helps prevent lens flares while shooting. If you shoot a lot outdoors or a lot of natural light then the III might be worth it but honestly, I don’t think the III is worth the extra money. I do shoot a lot of indoor/studio work with this lens so to me the price difference isn’t worth it. That’s my honest opinion. I hope that helps!
I love your blog men since day 1 thank you for sharing more tips and knowledge about camera and lenses , you are my inspiration about photography , and it's amazing, I'm Canon user too I wish I could have like that canon zoom lens, 70-200mm watching from Philippines
I just purchased this lens (arrived yesterday) with the intention of taking it on holiday to Japan. Looking forward to using it before the trip on various types of shoots.
There's a free Nikon museum just outside of Tokyo. You can see a 150 to 1200 lens ... hope its still there. Great lens for shooting where it comes from.
I use this lens with a Canon 2X teleconverter version III and the results on images and video are wild...... I'm also using old Canon Cameras..... Canon 1DX MK III and a Canon 5DSR .......This lens is a keeper ......
Thanks for asking your question! Spending on what you’re shooting and the lighting situations, I personally would probably upgrade just because of the f/2.8 but if you don’t need a f/2.8 lens then I wouldn’t purchase the III version because not much has changed from vII to vIII. In the version III, they added a new coating on the glass to help with shooting outdoors and how the light is received in the lens but if you’re shooting outdoors all the time then getting a 2.8 isn’t really that necessary unless you do a lot of low light photography. Hope that helps!
bought this in 2011.. EF mount, still have it !! the focus ring isn't super smooth but it's a great image for sure.. its a big boy though thats for sure!
Haha yes it definitely is a huge lens and I’ve seen people use this for street photography and after a shoot with this lens I’m ready to take a break let alone walk around the city with this attached to my camera 😂😂
Good to hear some real life use cases. The 70-200mm gm2 is my favorite lens on my Sony a7c, I use it mostly for landscape photography. Maybe a monopod could be a worthwhile investment especially if you are are shooting on events and have stay in the same position for a long time. The "background" music is too loud, it distracts from your message.
A monopod is definitely a great idea for steadier shots. Thanks for mentioning that and thanks for the feedback about the music! I missed that while putting the video together but thanks for staying and watching the video with that distraction!
For events I actually use a speed light on my hot shoe and sometimes have them on stands depending on the room size. For headshots and others, I have the r2pro II. Hope that helps!
@@ericsunphotography I own the II, not worth upgrading at all. The only difference is slightly improved contrast shooting in backlit conditions. The EF is stronger than the RF in my eyes, especially doing close up (by far less focus breathing). And the EF does not extend which has advantages in harsh conditions. But the weight is substantial with the EF.
@@peterebel7899 Yes, I definitely agree about the extending part of the RF. I haven't used the RF 70-200 but after running into issues with the zoom part on my 24-70, I always feel some type of way about extending lenses and the weight of the EF! Propping that elbow on my hip has become my main pose with this lens 😂😂
Nice! I’m not too eager for the RF version either 😂😂 this lens is great as is though, I do imagine the RF lens is lighter and smaller but that price tag though 👀👀
I can definitely imagine! Haven’t used the 5DSR before but the specs of that camera with that lens or any full frame with this lens, I know it’s going to be 🔥🔥!

😂😂 thanks for being one of the best of us and actually reading the manual and sharing the knowledge to those who don’t 😂😂
The first switch is about the focus distance, you can set it to 1.2m so you can focus closer or to 2.5m so it won't try to focus on closer objects.
Awesome, thanks!!
Bought the ii used for around 1000 and ever been impressed with the images out of it. It has weight yes. It's old yes. But is it a great lens? Definitely.
👏👏👏 well said! Definitely don’t regret buying this lens and can’t recommend it enough to people!
The Stabilization 1 and 2. 1 I think is general movement. 2 is used more for panning shots.
Thanks for clarifying that up for everyone!

The canon is great!
Nice video. Got this mark 2 secondhand, and I have no complaints 👌
Thank you! The mkii has never failed no matter what I’m shooting!
if you are doing a lens review, it's worth doing a bit of research instead of saying "I don't know what they do".
😂😂 you right!
@@ericsunphotography 😂😂😂
I purchased this lens back in 2014 and I absolutely love it for environmental portraiture!📷
Yes! Glad to see that the lens is still going strong for 8+ years!!
I have version III. This lens is amazing, and so is the II !! Just found your channel because of your 5d4 video. Subbed!
I appreciate the love! Whenever I use this lens it reminds me how much I need to start working out more loll
@@ericsunphotography haha! It's heavy because Canon made it out of gold!

Hello, I have the 70-200 f/4 is II usm version, do you recommend going for the 70-200 f/2.8 is III usm version? thank you so much.

It's also incredibly sharp all across the frame, even wide open. It's sharper at 2.8 than my Sony zoom is at f4.
Do you know why this gen 2 got discontinued ?
I’m honestly not sure but the first thing that does come to mind is probably money loll.
Love my mkii Still blows my mind how well if performs for sports.

III compared to II is identical beside
- some coating
- production plant

That’s real. The lens is super heavy-when I bring this lens out for some street photos, I always bring a strap to help with the weight 😂😂
thank you for the informative video
Appreciate that! Glad it was helpful!
I've own this lens twice and its great and all but I now own the version 3 and its much better In my opinon.
That’s awesome! I’ve heard some different opinions on the 3. What makes it better for you?
