I like this guy. Very professional, non-dramatic, and straight forward. I especially like the lack of any music soundtrack. Thank you sir.
There is a soundtrack
lol the guy watched before this was the exact opposite but his pop bottle spitune made up for it with the gross factor
I love how easily everything just comes right out on his SKS. It must have been taken apart and cleaned many times. My firing pin retainer was IN THERE
I pretty much need a punch for every takedown lever on my SKS lol.
Right I can’t get my retainer pin tapped out I need to get it in a Vice to tap it out better maybe a bit of kroil
Felt
Yep. They sure can be.
@@Yungak47recordsThe proper sized punch and a heavier hammer helps too.
As a Canadian, this was the First rifle I got. Love it to death, still use it to this day. Good sturdy beginner rifle that holds its own!
Wasnt the SKS banned recently?

best SKS disassembly video out there in my opinion
Thanks for the quick easy instructions. Usually people want to tell there life story during these
Such an easy to understand step-by- step video! Thank you so much!
Very well explained. You have a good radio voice or country singer
And a thousand-yard stare.
it's been quite some time since I've cleaned or fired mine, I was planning on doing some "upgrades" & cleaning...very helpful!
Mine is a Norinco from 92 if I read the serial right, looks like it had never been fired but once. It wouldn't feed, once I carefully fixed that it's like s new rifle. The face of the chamber was never finished to allow smooth, reliable feeding. Someone else gave up, but I have a dremel and a steady hand. Honestly, I had to polish the feed ramp on a brand new Smith & Wesson that would hang up occasionally
I think Norinco rushed mine out the door pre-ban in the 90's. At least they left me enough steel to carve out a working rifle, it's beautiful.
Thanks for the video, I'm still getting familiar with it.
Thank you for a great video. I just purchased a nice SKS soaked in cosmoline. This really helps!
first gun im getting when i get my PAL!
what a great series of videos (1-4) very clear and to the point. Ill keep an eye out for your products for giving me some real peace of mind in regards to my SKS
Thank you so much for the feedback and for watching the series!
You forgot to mention to make sure the safety is on before trying to remove the barrel from the stock. Once I turns it on the barrel dropped right out. Thank God I stopped & viewed another video. Other than that you were right on & this was very helpful. Thank you for these videos.
Well done. I miss my SKS (I'm in Australia).
Come on over to the U.S. ! Aussies alway's welcome !!!!
I never knew the piston extension came out...
There was a ton of cosmoline in there (possibly my favorite smell).

One detail that was missed; the safety must be on to depress the trigger guard latch, at least on my '43 it does. I fought with this my first time around.
DonziGT230 you should have had the safety on to begin with hahahaha
Yea, but my drywall & stucco guys are happy that I forget to safety my guns.
Do you mean “ ‘43” as in 1943? Because SKS’s weren’t around till 45
I also found the top cover corners make good punches for removing the trigger guard
You are a literal God send. I had no idea why I couldn't depress my trigger guard latch!
Great video series!
This series is fantastic for the new SKS owner. Any tips for removing a stubborn firing pin retainer? Mine is jammed in there something fierce.
After soaking the bolt in Kroil, I usually place the bolt on a nylon bench block and center the retaining pin over one of the holes in the bench block and give it a good tap with a punch and hammer. The retaining pin should pop out.
I gave up cause I was scratching up the metal so i soaked that thing in penetrating oil for two weeks and now the thing is smooth as butter.
@@oganarchy3667 you destroyed it...
Thanks. I just bought a 1952 model later refurbished at the factory and all matching serials along with the X out original serial replaced with the new one on the stock.. Retainer is also stuck. I have it well oiled but will soak it. Got everything else apart.
...got the retainer off. Also had to punch it back in using the broad end of the punch and pliers to orient it to fit just right to tap it back in.
I'll see how it performs first run. Everything is oiled in there and I'll watch out for slam fire.
This is super wicked awesome
FYI - The safety has to be in the "safe" up position before you can remove the trigger group.
If your firing pin retainers is stuck, soaking the area in penetrating oil overnight can really help. The oil is cheap online
Very well done video. When pressing the trigger guard latch in disassembly, does it matter whether the safety is on or off? My firing pin retainer will not easily push out with a punch as you demonstrate. Mine requires a hammer to remove and reinstall.
Excellant! Not too long ,,no added yak yak BS.
Just got a SKS👍 excited to shoot it.
Note to all dummies like myself the SKS has to be on safety before you take out the trigger assembly
Thanks sir U r awsm, respect bro
Great info, thanks for sharing
My hand guard wont come off. No idea what im doing wrong
I have a question from Brownells' I own a SKS, standard Russian 10 round capacity, fires great, fairly accurate...I like it. But I quite accidently discovered when I went to remove it from the gun safe, I sort of bobbled it a bit and it dropped about 3 inches and the rifle tapped the ground on the way out and it self chambered a round and was ready to shoot. Handling the rifle in a normal fashion has never caused a round to just load by itself. But eventually I discovered that in a stress situation where I want the rifle ready to fire before I even bring it up to sight, is I simply grab it from the case, and as soon as clear the case, I quickly tap the butt of the rifle on the floor and it loads and I bring it up and I take it off safety and sight. I am wondering if you can duplicate this with your on SKS stock and confirm if this is just a happenstance thing or my rifle is possible a problem and I should take it to a gunsmith.
is the piston in the hand guard different on a chinese sks?
Bloke looks like someone tried cutting my reciever...any ideas 💡 buckaroo
Great series on care for the SKS. That stock.. I would strip it, steam it, fill in dings, stain, sand, and seal it, but that's me.
The battle scars and old look is awesome IMO.
No don’t sand
Great videos! Do you know of a service/disassembly/reassembly document I can get for this gun?
Need safety on to remove trigger group
Im having problems disassembling my SKS. The person in the video is able to disassemble the SKS with ease and without using tools much, but for me I have to use tools to even move the take down lever. Is there something I can do so that it is possible to disassemble my SKS as easily as the guy here or at least easier?
I'm not an expert and have never touched a gun, but I did Automotive work for a while... some form of Lubrication is all that comes to mind. And take good care of it to prevent it getting in that state again.
When in storage, you can't put too much oil on it . Don't hesitate to saturate it .
This guys done this then showd u will get better
The takedown latch on my Chicom Type 56 is super tight too. I just have to use a bit of muscle to move it.
My sks only holds 7 rounds.. something wrong with the magazine and it won’t go all the way down. Any help?
Hello my fellow Canadians
how does the disassembly differ if the SKS has a magazine?
جيد جدا
Vary good
Very nice sir

I think the spring assembly was in backwards? shouldn't the straight part be facing forward?
+Jon C Brownells is correct, the curly end goes in first.
Jon C so why do you think professionals are wrong I mean where did you get this idea?? thinking wrong...you confuse me
@@cptrfwright In the book The SKS Carbine by Steve Kehaya and John Poyer, an exploded parts view of the rifle depicts the straight end of the recoil spring toward the muzzle.
In another video by Caleb, he inserts the recoil spring straight end forward. 🤔🤓
Any help with a stuck firing pin retainer?
That's what I'm trying to figure out to lol.
@@jandewit6574 Any luck?
@@mikebastiat i put a lot of deagreaser on and then used a little punch I think to push it out.
What about the bolt hold open latch???
my gas tube piston on my sks doesnt come out is that normal? i have a yugo sks just wondering what may be the problem or is that how yugos are setup?
The most likely cause is carbon fouling and buildup, which will cause the piston to stay locked in the tube. A good carbon cleaner will help break down the fouling and allow the piston to be removed.
+Brownells, Inc. thank u so much your videos are easy and awsome
Our pleasure Arturo!
I can’t get firing pin retainer out, any suggestions?
SUPER👍👌
Can anyone help me...I do not have a punch...what can I substitute a punch with?
in the butt of the gun the cleaning kit should have a punch
Don’t use anything else. That can cause damage. You can get punches from Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc
You are putting the spring in backwards. Curvy in the back.
Nope. In the front.

Do not get me wrong, I do love this rifle. But the one thing I don't like about this rifle (as a practical military rifle) is the reliance on a punch for basic field stripping.
Not only is the amount of force to remove the trigger assembly downright painful, but a punch is often (but not always) needed in order to swing the takedown levers (gas tube and dust cover) as well.
