No need to have any spirit for cleaning . Just disassembly the rifle and put the parts in a stove for two minutes on the temeprature of 50c. After that you can clean it by ordinary rag. Sorry for my bad english. p.s. I served Yugoslav Army in 1982 and I have had this rifle. This is the best rifle on the world. Good video, best luck !
good morning gentlemen, after discovering your website and watching countless videos about the SKS, i finally broke down and purchased one of your rifles and 1000 rounds of ammo for it this past Sunday, i cant wait to get it. your videos are what convinced me to finally make the purchase, and not be intimidated in the dis-assembly and re-assembly and cleaning process.
Picked up an unissued Yugo SKS packed in cosmoline at a gun show earlier this year. I've wanted an SKS for a while, but the used ones I would see at the shows were all beat up & shot to death. ( some would call that - patina ) I ran the serial # and determined it was made in 1970. I feel very lucky to have gotten a new SKS, and a very good quality SKS. I thought I had done a pretty good job removing the cosmoline, but when I heat it up with a lot of gun fire it still leaches a little comoline from parts unknown. If anyone on here hasn't bought one of these Yugos, pull the trigger and buy one. You'll be glad you did.
Got mine yesterday, turned out to be a 1973. Also came with a couple extra muzzle breaks not mentioned in any video or description. Superb quality, looks like it came out of the factory yesterday. Also should mention it has more cosmoline than every other arsenal rifle I've ever owned, combined. Took a long time to clean, but worth it.
Bought one from you a couple weeks ago and spent one Saturday afternoon cleaning it up as described. Sent the bolt and carrier off to Murray's Gunsmithing for some prep work and I'm looking forward to taking it to the range soon. Thanks for the mineral spirit lesson. That's what I used, along with some brake cleaner, and I really got it clean as a whistle. Hopefully, the wife will let me get another one before you sell out!
My Yugo numbers matching never issued SKS (in cosmoline) just arrived. Thanks for the no BS details. I'll now take this rifle apart today and clean it after your very informative video. Thanks.
SKS is a grate shooting rifle. Lot's of fun to shoot. Easy to clean. Some what easy to load. Get one. Mine was made in Russia in 1953. Bought it in 1994 for about $100.00 in California.
I just washed mine with piping hot water at the sink. That cleaned up the metal parts pretty good. I let the hot water run for another 15-20 minutes afterwards so the cosmoline wouldn't harden up again and clog my drain. The stock I left in the sun for a few hours every day. Cosmoline would bleed out of the wood due to the heat, and I would wash that off with hot water again. After 4-5 days of doing this I found the stock to be clean enough.
Thank you for posting the video. Very informative. Picked up my Yugo SKS that I ordered from Classic today. Can't wait to get her all cleaned up on Saturday.
Id recommend disassembling the rifle and cleaning the stock off of the action and barrel. I drop all metal parts into my bucket of cleaner and let them soak while I clean the stock. It helps with the bolt and firing pin.
Got my sks shipped yesterday, the thing was caked in the stuff to the point where i could hardly pull the bolt back, watched the video and sprayed it down with some mineral spirits. it pretty much just melts most of it off. Great video, super useful
Hey man just saw your video, thanks for the tips! I just got my Yugo SKS rifle today, also from a crate and covered in cosmoline. After disassembly, Mineral Spirits took everything right off of each piece. I used cue tips to get the hard-to-get spaces, but overall most of the gunk is gone. Thanks again! Can't wait to fire this bad boy c:
I inherited one of these, and also a bunch of American Eagle 7.62x39mm Soviet 124gr Full Metal Jacket ammo, and I'm curious if that ammo will work with this gun or not? I also got some (but not much) 7.62x39mm Norinco ammo (in a yellow box) where the tip is just a bit larger than the American Eagle ammo. The casing is the same size, just the tip is sized differently. I just don't want to damage the rifle with the American Eagle ammo, as it was my late fathers. Thank you!
I bought my son a yugo sks recently at a local shop. Now I want one for myself. I did just order ammo from you guys. Patiently waiting so we can have some trigger therapy.
Mineral spirits. Awesome. Love the video, it simplified my weapon. Very accurate! I have shot expert with m4, m9,and m16, my sks is way more accurate with a smaller group every time.
This is probably a silly question but I figured I'd ask before I mess anything up inadvertently. For a correct, full cleaning, would you disassemble everything and let all the metal parts soak in the mineral spirits?
I just ordered mine yesterday! Any thoughts on using my Harbor Freight steam cleaner for this dreaded task? Is there any reason not to? I'm thinking about hanging the parts from a clothesline and letting the steam do all the work! It seams to me this would also do a good job of drawing most of the cosmo out of the stock.
As far as cleaning up the stock you can put the disassembled stock in a black plastic trash bag and wrap it with some paper towels or something to absorb the cosmoline and place it in the direct sunlight for a few hours and let the heat sweat the cosmoline out of the stock as much as possible. I still trying to decide between a Yugo and a Norinco SKS, I know Classic has been out of stock on the Norinco's for a while, but Yugo's seem to be plentiful right now.
where can u find Mineral Spirits? i am in California. There are some other ones that don't look like the can u have there.. is it available here? if not should i try simple green?
Thanks, Great Video, Yugo SKS M59/66 that's the second Rifle I've owned in my life. My first Win.270 when I was 15 yrs old. The ones you have are in Beautiful shape like to hand pick one of them.
Danmaz6fan thats what i said...notice how there is not a comma after the word no. (No yugo rifles have chrome lined barrels.) I did not write: No,yugo rifles have chrome lined barrels.
Hey! Ben! Love all your videos. I subscribed to your channel here and I just bought my FIRST! SKS. I'm so excited! Can't wait to pick it up. I've been wanting one of these rifles for a long time ever since I've heard about them and learned about them. I just have a question though. Is that Mineral Spirits you have in the spray bottle and the bucket when you were showing the cleaning video? I know that's probably a stupid question. Anyway, I love Classic Firearms!!!!!!!! Keep bringing us the GREAT! VIDEOS!!!
Vítězslav Zpěvak mine is a red color hardwood. I used chain oil on mine as it leaves a red tint brought out the natural beauty was already there. Maybe not going to work with a blonde stock. I would ask someone who does furniture restoration for better answer. But that really worked well for me...
I looooooooooooove the SKS! I bought mine in the mid-1990s for something like $80. It had a synthetic stock, looked like fiberglass or something... It was Chinese if I remember right. Norinco? It's been awhile, so I might be wrong. Damn, I wish I still had that gun!
Great video, but with mineral spirits and a little brush action. I would have used some kind of eye protection, even those sunglasses that you are holding on your head.
Hey folks! Serious inquiry here: I've noted recently that California Hardware stores including Lowes no longer stock standard mineral spirits- They all now say "substitute" on the labels to comply with some newish state regulations... Anyone reading here have any proven alternative suggestions?? I was thinking to give some artist's grade Gamsol or Turpenoid a shot... It says it's petroleum based?
Just received my Yugo SKS from Classic Firearms, not looking forward to the cosmoline removal. I agree with Chandler Hull; provide an option to have ya'll (that's Okie for you guys) clean the weapon. I'd pay $50 -- or more, rather than doing it myself.
Get a 4" section of PVC pipe at Lowe's, Home Depot or Menards. Put cap on the end, no need to use pvc solvent, friction fit is OK. Remove the stock from the rifle, disassemble the bolt and put them in a try with the mineral spirits. Take the rifle and lower it into the pvc pipe, then fill it with the mineral spirits. Let the rifle soak for a few hours, every 15min. just pull on a string you tied to the rifle, the mineral spirits will dissolve the cosmoline. It is Science but works like Magic! Don't put it in the shower.
I appreciate the video and it was helpful. Not all guns, even the same make, are created equal. To get that trigger assembly back into the gun was something an 800 gorilla wouldn't have had the strength to do. I had to use a vice grip, compress it as hard as I could, then get a mallet to hit a phillips screwdriver that rested on the trigger release pin, and then with ALL that done, the assembly would snap in.
I love my SKS from Classic I got the Serbian Police batch no cosmo on it. Like mint condition. I did the bolt mod. and i modded the mag release with SSR from texas firearms. I wish i could post a pic!
No need to have any spirit for cleaning . Just disassembly the rifle and put the parts in a stove for two minutes on the temeprature of 50c. After that you can clean it by ordinary rag.

p.s. I served Yugoslav Army in 1982 and I have had this rifle. This is the best rifle on the world.
Good video, best luck !
Yea but then your whole house and the food you plan on cooking will smell and taste like cosmoline.
Andr3wK: When wife then kill you - no need for Yugo SKS!
not putting that nasty rifle in my oven
best rifle in the world, lol i beg to differ my friend.
JNA

Bought a Yugo SKS back in 2002 for like $100. Just now getting around to getting the cosmoline off. Thanks for the video!

Excellent video! I just picked up a Norinco yesterday. This video is going to be a big help getting it cleaned up this weekend.
Thank you for posting the video. Very informative. Picked up my Yugo SKS that I ordered from Classic today. Can't wait to get her all cleaned up on Saturday.

Does the firing pin need to be took apart and cleaned? Thanks
This guy is awesome. Very informative and easy to liston to. Thank you bud i learnd something from you.💪💪

It will
I'm definitely getting one of these rifles. You sold me on it.
The one I've seen from them had almost no finish and the stock looked kinda odd.
Is the Yugo sks better than the norinco sks?
Something about the added bells and whistles on the Yugo SKS's make this rifle so tempting to buy, even after having a Norinco.
Great tip. I just ordered one and now I know how to break it down and clean it. Awesome video! Thanks!
I bought my son a yugo sks recently at a local shop. Now I want one for myself. I did just order ammo from you guys. Patiently waiting so we can have some trigger therapy.

A heat gun and/or steam cleaner is invaluable for getting the heavy cosmoline off. The more stubborn stuff I use mineral spirits on.
Is there anyway I could pay extra for y'all to clean them?
yeah give me 3000 and ill do it for you lmao
When are y'all guys getting some more SKS's for sale?
I know this video is old but I bought a Yugo SKS without the cleaning rod. Do you know what length rod it takes?
where can u find Mineral Spirits? i am in California. There are some other ones that don't look like the can u have there.. is it available here? if not should i try simple green?
Thanks, Great Video, Yugo SKS M59/66 that's the second Rifle I've owned in my life. My first Win.270 when I was 15 yrs old. The ones you have are in Beautiful shape like to hand pick one of them.
.270 first and a Yugo SKS second? You're a lucky bastard.
If your afraid to use Mineral Spirits on your stock because it can remove some of the finish use WD-40. Works well and won't harm the finish..
Great vid. Thanks a lot. I got a yugo SKS a few months back. Fantastic weapon
Aren’t mineral spirits obtrusive to the blueing? If so, I’d stick to simple green and a toothbrush, even if it takes more time.
I have SKS model M I bought back 1995 with a thumb hole stock. I was told it was hard to find SKS. Do you have a SKS without the grenade launcher?
Do these rifles have a chrome lined barrel?
42TRGSako No yugo rifles have chrome lined barrels.
42TRGSako Yugos do not have a chrome lined barrel.
Danmaz6fan thats what i said...notice how there is not a comma after the word no. (No yugo rifles have chrome lined barrels.) I did not write: No,yugo rifles have chrome lined barrels.
What do you use to "wash" the mineral spirits off of the stock? Do you follow up with Boiled Linseed Oil or Tru-Oil after the stock dries?

Ralph U. Hi Ralph! Yes that was mineral spirits in both the bottle and the bucket. Thank you for subscribing, and congratulations on your first SKS!
Thanks!!!!!!!!
Picked up my SKS today.
Hello, may i ask you. Is there any special kinde of tru oil for refinishing of Laminate SKS stock ( Tula 1952). Thank you for answere.
Vítězslav Zpěvak mine is a red color hardwood. I used chain oil on mine as it leaves a red tint brought out the natural beauty was already there. Maybe not going to work with a blonde stock. I would ask someone who does furniture restoration for better answer. But that really worked well for me...
One of the best take down videos ever!!! 😎
I think when you show off your new items, can you tell up a price range of the guns???? maybe????
thanks
Ted
Great video guys, just ordered one from you, excited to pick it up and get cleaning
Nice job explaining everything! Your easy to follow
I looooooooooooove the SKS! I bought mine in the mid-1990s for something like $80. It had a synthetic stock, looked like fiberglass or something... It was Chinese if I remember right. Norinco? It's been awhile, so I might be wrong. Damn, I wish I still had that gun!
Mine is stuck in bolt action/grenade mode. Cant get it to go down back to semi auto. Any suggestions???
At the front of the barrel there's a little button you gotta slide
Very good video. Quick and simple. Thanks
Picking mine up tomorrow!
first time watching a grown man washing a rifle with water
Very informative and very helpful, thank you very much
Great content! Very helpful, thank you!
Great video, but with mineral spirits and a little brush action. I would have used some kind of eye protection, even those sunglasses that you are holding on your head.
Nice video, but you forgot to take out the gas selector from gas port in the end of the dissasembly;)
do it with your shirt off next time
man i wish my yugo sks came with a smooth bolt cover instead of the serrated scope holder

great video my man! Very helpful. I love my SKS definitely a solid gun from head to toe
that is Arctic Birch on the SKS
like your name, dude
Man I want one! & I just bought a Yugo Ak 47 from u
The videos I watch most say cleaning. But first 5 minutes of everyone just jabbering on.
why don't you sell C&R pistols to 03 FFL from NewYork. Show me the law that prohibits that.
Boiling water is what I use, works fine for me.
I was wrong I actually have a Czech v 57 rifle
Few minutes age I thought I only need a SKS, now I need mineral spirits as well, how I gonna make it through the month now, god I hate you guys…
Don't even try to press your trigger in like Ben does it. You'll tear a pectoral muscle.
5 years too late.
I am going to make and market a gun grease in **Bacon Aroma**,...so there is a Nice Smell at the gun range!
👍⚡️👍
The Yugo SKS I've seen from Classic Firearms is silver.
And the stock is way darker than any other SKS I've ever seen.
I know itch one your talking about the6 had a small run of ceremonial rifles come in that were black stock and chrome ore nickel plated.
My God!
those pieces are cherry!!!
beautiful blondes♥♥
Is not that easy, just saying
Maybe you should wear safety glasses next time...
Very helpful video, thanks!
