EP14 HQ HOLDEN BODY FIND BOUGHT BACK TO LIFE WITH A BIG BLOCK CHEVY V8 ENGINE SWAP
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 авг 2022
- We found a HQ body parked for 20 years + without a motor and transmission.
To bring it back to life we didnt just fit a factory engine ! We fitted my favorite engine a Big Block Chev 396ci v8. Aussie muscle that could/should have been .
SO WHAT IS BACKSHED ALL ABOUT ?
WE ARE ALL ABOUT SAVING OLD CLASSIC CARS AND MODIFIYING SOME ALONG THE WAY TOO.
WE LOVE THE CLASSIC RESCUE , FIRST WASH ,FIRST START IN YEARS TYPE OF THING, GETTING OLD JUNK RUNNING AND DRIVING THEN PUT BACK ON THE ROAD AFTER YEARS OF BEING LEFT TO ROT IS WHAT WE DO.
IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOUR INTO FORD , HOLDEN , CHEVY , BIG BLOCK SMALL BLOCK OR ANYTHING IN BETWEEN WE MIGHT HAVE A VIDEO FOR YOU TO WATCH. IVE HAVE AND HAVE HAD A LOT OF CARS INCLUDING XB COUPE , XY FACLON GT , EH HOLDEN , F100 , VB COMMODORE , HQ SEDAN AND WAGON , CORTINA , VALIANT AND SO MANY MORE SO THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. IN ON OF OUR VIDEOS I PRETTY MUCH WENT TO HEAVEN FINDING A WRECKING YARD / JUNKARD WHERE THERE WAS EVERYTHING YOU COULD DREAM OF INCLUDING A MONARO , CHARGER , VALIANT PACER , A FALCON COUPE , TORANA , CADILLAC , SOME CHEVY'S EVEN SOME JDM CARS LIKE DATSUN , NISSAN SKYLINE , MITSUBISHI SCORPION BUT IT DIDN'T STOP THERE EVEN 4X4 LIKE A HJ 45 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER AND A 60 SERIES WAGON . I REALLY HAVE NO BIAS I LOVE RESCUING THEM ALL SO DO STICK AROUND AS YOUR BOUND TO SEE SOMETHING YOU LIKE. CHEERS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WATCH . MICK
Mate I remember back in my teens a 253 HQ was the shizz. A 308 was the go. If you had a 350 you were a god not to be messed with. Big blocks were a thing of fairytales. Love your work....
Your 100% right mate. I remember looking at my old car thinking “ but only cars in magazines have big blocks” way back then it was a big deal .
Cheers for watching my walk down memory lane mate.🍺🍺👍
Yes in my teens I was called a god in my hj kingsy with a 327 chev and 2speed powerglide. True story that's why i had to comment
As plenty of guys have already said" bloody great content and tips Mick" love how the family help out here and there and what a sweet sound of a bbc. Well done
Cheers mate I appreciate ya saying buddy. Hang around there’s heaps more coming
🍺🍺👍
I have been watching these videos for a little while now and it is causing me great distress. Because Mick is doing it and I'm not, ha ha ha keep it up mate you are great to watch
Hahaha cheers mate 🍺🍺👍
You've done it again mate your one of the best channels on RUclips and I thoroughly enjoy every episode good on you 👏
Too kind Karl
Thanks heaps for saying mate
🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 would love to see a WB ute with the rectangular headlights not caprice longer style. Particularly would like to get a video on restoring said headlights (removal and replacement of clips and bulb surround etc).
Good to see a truly honest video from a old mechanic that worked on hundreds of these.
Cheers Kevin I appreciate ya watching buddy
🍺🍺🍺👍
Not only a jack of all trades of automation but an editor as well, be honest what was more time consuming, the build or the many hours of editing.. great job all around Mick.
Hahha. You have obviously had a hand in editing mate .
It took a while that’s for sure . I mean days not hours but that’s how I prefer to do it .
If you enjoyed it then it’s worth it mate.
🍺🍺👍
Again I’m learning something new with each episode watching how you solve some quite technical problems for the unmechanically minded like myself, great content!!
Thanks Peter I appreciate ya saying mate.
Cheers for watching
🍺👍
Best times on the road with real Holden's in the 90's, I bought a hx from the 9 ways in Brisbane ,changed oil and drove home to central coast of NSW. Next up a hz with 253 5 speed Celica. Stupidly let them go for newer vehicles, bad decisions.
Many of these larger cars sold as Chevrolet, Holden or Vauxhall, started life as Opel Kapitän, Admiral, Diplomat, etc. For a while, we also had the Australian Holden branding in South Africa. The Holden Monaro GTS V8 was particularly popular. Chic magnet indeed.
🍺🍺👍cheers mate for watching and your knowledge of these old cars
I have a HJ statesman with 454 turbo 400 and 9 inch with factory air done conversion in 1991 still own it and still runs watching this video reminds me the same conversion process brings back memories. Nice job on video
Cheers Douglas for watching mate
That stato would be cool , I love these H-series bodies with big blocks ! They are made for them.
🍺🍺👍👍
Great episode very enjoyable just like hanging around with a mate
I don’t know what to say David ! Top comment I i really hope that’s how it come across .
Cheers 🍺🍺🍺🍺
Great build Mick! However. 1: The Oil Pump intermediate shaft must be clocked to 2 & 8 o’clock position to achieve #1 Distributor pin lining up with cylinder 1 Intake Runner. 2: Unless a fella wants his Cooling System full of Rust. Never use Well Water in an Engine. Using Distilled H2O ensures that zero mineral contamination enters the system. Ground Water will 100% rust the water jackets every time. (Distilled H2O & Coolant will last indefinitely. With absolutely zero rust.).
Thanks mate , however , the pump and distributor are in and fine hense it ran and dont put coolant in any engine till its proved it doesnt leak and guess what , it leaked .🍺🍺👍🍺🍺💪💪
So glad you found that manifold water leak before fitting carby!
Yep it filled the engine with water haha🍺👍
Music 🎵 editing , narrator having a well deserved beer at end ..TDC .. alternator..flanges ...awesome talk and educational if Ur into motoring ..timing light?..u set Ur TDC with Ur great knowledge..watching the valves open etc awesome
Cheers again John
🍺👍
YOU'RE A LEGEND MICK!!💪👊SHINE BRIGHT!!💥🙌💚QUEENSLAND!!
Cheers Glen
🍺🍺👍
Great build! The BBC spices up the recipe nicely. The tail lights in the bumper look to be the exact same that GM used on the full-size 1969 Chevrolet in the US. Those Holdens are good looking cars, never see them here in the States.
Cheers for watching mate .
Yep I’m a big block tragic but we didn’t get them in any of of cars here so I’m very jealous of some of your cars stateside
🍺🍺👍
Well done mate, you made it look easy. I was really looking forward to that one. Great to see all of the family jumped in and gave you a bit of a hand too. Cheers
Thanks Mick I appreciate ya saying mate
Cheers 🍺🍺👍
I fell across your channel (and this video) quite by accident, mate. Thought I'd give it a look - and am now a subscriber. Enjoyed that episode from start to finish and about to go trooping through the others on the channel. Always regret not buying my Grandad's HQ Kingy back in '91. I had plans for that thing that probably would have made the old boy's hair stand on end. Unfortunately, my father wouldn't let me buy it - reckoned it was on its last legs. The old 202 had done 171k and still had 40 psi at idle when warm and didn't smoke.- just needed a valve job to bring the two missing cylinders back.....but as it turned out, it was just a head gasket and that was the first time the old boy had had the head off the thing since he bought it back in late 1973.. She had 3-on-the tree, disc brakes, cream bench interior and hood lining, brown carpet, brown dash top and was Saffron in colour....and as you'd expect, she'd been looked after. She sold for $NZ1750. I would have been getting it for $1200.......
I loved driving it and never missed an opportunity when Grandad asked if I wanted to. My Dad was a Ford man all through my childhood and into my late teens, so I was very much in the closet as to my love for the Holdens. I thought they looked better and were way more comfortable on the road....ans when I drove Grandad's car, I thought they were pretty easy to drive for such a big car too (my own car when I got my license was an Austin A30). I loved that HQ and always wanted to own it....and I was pissed off that Dad wasn't on board. However, I did convince him a few years later to go look at an '86 VK1/2 Exec 5-speed (EFI black motor) with me. I drove it and loved it...and then he drove it and liked it so much that he bought it before I got a bloody look in! Suddenly, Holdens could do no wrong.....but finally I could get myself one without having to park it in the street several doors down so he didn't have to look at it......but it took me another 3 years to do it and by then, he'd traded the VK for a VN V6 manual and then onto a VN V8 Exec 5-speed manual My first was a 91 VN V6 Exec 5-speed and this and Dad's V8 Exec (now sporting the full SV5000 fibreglass body kit, a big bore, headers and cheese-cutter Holden rims) were the cars at out wedding. He owned this car until he passed shortly after the wedding, but I sent him off with a 21 rev salute from the beast and a long black line that I think he would have been proud of.
I've had many Commodores since then, but I still grumble about missing out on the HQ, because I reckon I'd still own it....and it would have been similarly equipped to yours, except I prefer manual to auto. Owning one has, sadly, gone way outside my budget now though, so I'll just watch you enjoying yours!
All the best.
Cheers for watching mate 🍺🍺👍
Awesome old school techs, simple and easy to maintain with proven reliability. There's nothing like the sound of a big block Chevy. Keep up the great work enjoying your channel. 👌👍😎🇦🇺🍻
Cheers mate 🍺🍺👍
Thanks for the memories man l went to town on a HQ in the late 80 s it’s the only car I wish I still had 🍻
That is one thing I love about cars , the memories. As I said in the video this one is memory lane for me too.
Cheers Paul and stick around mate the HQ is back again very soon
🍺🍺👍

Awesome X10 build ..I'm watching this before I start work today in arvo .. excellent video 👍🏻 on this HQ ..luv Ur odd helpers popping in video ...your down to earth 🌎 Aussie narration is excellent..ironing out the bugs like Sherlock Holmes..
Shit Torque....great remark..truly great project .. congratulations.

🍺🍺👍
Great episode mate
Don't often watch over a hour and half utube vids but you made it easy. Good work and improvisation!
Thanks mate cheers for watching it I know it was long.
🍺🍺👍
that was awsome...ive got an HQ with a 400 chevy engine thats been sitting in my garage for over 10 yrs...the engine needs a rebuild and the HQ is in the same condition as Mucus...your video is the inspiration i needed to get it sorted. thanks.
Crikey mate you've done it again the HQ Holden she's a bloody pearler well done good work love it
Cheers Wally
🍺🍺👍
OMG Mick this build brings back some sweet memories when I lived at the top of NSW Very close to Texas QLD. My 1st car was exactly like that Gold & 253 Column auto. Great to see your family giving you a chop out as well, what a sweet sounding motor. Keep it up champ your a ripper.
Thanks Andrew 🍺👍
The original washer pump was attached to the wiper motor. When the rubber valves degraded many converted to the washer pump on the reservoir, that is why the blue and yellow wires were added.
Ya nailed it mate , I was looking at the wiper motor yesterday and 100% pump is on it.
Cheers for watching
🍺🍺👍
Spot on mate, they can be a pain to fix too.
Gday . Enjoyed watching the process. Good stuff. 👍
The QY boot just keeps on giving it seems!!!
Hahaha yep.🍺🍺👍
1982.... I had a HJ with a warm 308 and Aussie M21 4speed running to a 3.08 LSD. Fucken spent a fortune on that car. Then went to a VB SLE Commie with 253 and Aussie 4 speed......Working on the ground.... your knees, hips & back must be in far better shape than mine...lol
Hahah 🍺🍺👍
You're a champion mate, you are the man I love watching your videos and your skills are unbelievable keep up the good work.
Too kind mate🍺🍺👍
Most enjoyable mate. something very satisfying watching vehicles in this stage of decay? (or useability), and seeing it given a new lease of life, but at a 'use what is lying around' level, not just chucking everything in new. Ever since George Lucas talked about a 'used universe' in Science fiction, with all the technology futuristic, but old, (and yes, I know this is not restoring space craft) it really resonated, can't really explain more than that, but thanks for sharing.
Yep use what ya got mate I get it 🍺🍺👍
Goulburn beer guy here. Been hanging for this episode, thank you :)
Ever thought of doing a Collab video with Mighty Car Mods?
Fantastic job mick 👏
Hopefully I will get to find a 1972 253ci HQ complete and give it a full restoration this year.
Steve New 🇳🇿 Zealand.
🍺🍺👍
My kind of car! Leave the shiny stuff for the show cars. Cool build mate 👌🏼
Hang around mate there heaps more coming!
You a Holden fan or just anything old?
Cheers for watching
🍺🍺👍
I’m an every old school car fan mate, but I run an HQ Facebook page, an HQ yearly cruise in Brisbane so I’m a little bias towards HQ’s 😁. Been enjoying your vids 👌🏼
Thanks mate
I’m in a couple of Hq pages on Fb but if it’s not the one you run please send me a tag or link and if you don’t mind share the video
Cheers mate
🍺🍺👍
Great content Mick. Better than TopGun II. More than happy to watch over an hour of your stuff. Thank you.
Christ ! That’s mate .
Yeah that one did get long but hope it was easy to watch . Cheers mate 🍺🍺👍
Very knowledgeable , I had a 454 LS6 650hp at rear wheels an 850hp with nitro in a LX Torana bombed T400 an 3.9 geared 31 spline axles wish I still had , it used to shake the ground people spun out when I was pulling into servos an at idle had a street strip crane cam
Nice ! 🍺🍺👍
Mate, the little horseshoey thing on Ohms setting on your meter is “Omega” the last letter of the Greek alphabet…. Lol. Great videos … keep up the good work!
Hahha cheers mate
🍺👍
Wow Mick great video! Watching this I could hear those immortal words ringing in my ears “not the Kingswood ya bloody Wog!” 😂 Mr Bullpit what a fair dinkum Aussie legend, loved watching this build my youth all over again, still love the lines on the HQ good looking car I think even today 😊, the silver paper was just great! made me laugh out loud, I had a white Statesman with 307 - 2 speed in the 90s thanks for an entertaining video, I’ll defiantly be back cheers Dx
Hahha yeah thanks Dx , The HQ will be back again very soon
🍺👍
❤ '...do you know what I like about big blocks?'
Wait for it...
"Everything."
It’s true mate hahaha 👍🍺

Great Video Mick . I still remember your old big block terrorising the streets of Mudgee back in the day 💪
Hahahah thanks AD . It had nothing on that rotary Ute you had ! Hahah
Catch up with you soonish
🍺🍺👍
One of the best RUclips videos I've watched for ages . Perfect for this Saturday morning. I would love to see how the kickdown works on a turbo 400 as I building the exact combo Yu have . Just never done a turbo 400 before .
Vacuum modulated kick down mate all internal , all you need to do is connect the vacuum line from manifold/ carb to the modulator at the rear of the box. 🍺🍺👍
Yeah, about those damn cockies...
Much excellent work.
Respect.
loved the vid Dude. Awesome job. Looking good. More talking and explaining things as you do them would beat the annoying musical interruptions every 5 seconds. Cheers.. Just sayin.
Be bloody good to see you driving it good stuff
Not long mate !
🍺🍺👍
Factory V8, column shift auto with bucket seats. Extremely unique and rare car you have there
Hahaha I’m not sure if it’s rare but mucus is definitely 1 of a kind ! Yeah his own kind Hahhaha

good on yuh... an American 396/402/454 Chevrolet engine... what a dream car and engine in the 70's ehh?!!
price of gas was apparent, even in the Mad Max movies. yeeee?!
Love big chevys!
Im a ford guy but i do love this HQ 👌🏻
Hahahha it’s hard not to love Mucus !
I like cars like this because ;parked for so long , missing bits and crappy as hell now anything you do to it regardless of how good you do it it’s a massive improvement Hahahha.
Cheers for watching mate

Cheers Mike thanks and yep I know there’s nothing I can do about the amount of adds mate. Cheers for watching 🍺👍
@@backshed5295 yeah mate, just how it goes. Righto, stop talking hah👍
Haha yeah that the deal Mike Hahha 🍺🍺👍 what are you into ? Holden ? Chev?
@@backshed5295 Old School mate. If anything, I might slightly favour Mopars, just love the classics in general. Survivors. That's what I really enjoy about what you do as opposed to the massive build shows, you get these old barges that just need a little bit of love and attention and breath life back into them. And they're so simple to work on compared to today's technology. Old Holden's 6's, Crossflows for example, I mean these engines were impressive technology at the time, yet so simple. What I love is getting them going and takes more brains to modify one of them and the satisfaction you get from that rather than press a few buttons and wind up a boost screw. Old school all the way mate. Different era now. Different crowd too.
Yeah I hear ya mate , I do like old school stuff. 🍺🍺👍
Good job Michael 👍🏻
Cheers Dave
🍺🍺👍
Lol 20 minutes getting the ingition switch out. Been there and done that. Why it took you so long was to push that pin in all the way you need the ignition switch in the on position, to do that you needed the key. Have the key then you don't need to change it...catch 22 situation. 🤦♂️ l9ving the build. Keep these episodes coming. Cheers Stew.
Ya nailed it mate
🍺🍺👍
Love the way you do these builds ignore the minor crap which can lead to years of Resto, get down to get them up and running.
Thanks Greg
Yeah mate I don’t care how bad they are if they run and drive then you can enjoy them and get the inspiration to improve them . The minute you strip them ( which is the easy bit) you then find that time , ability and money are limiting your progress.
Keep it simple.
Cheers for the comment and watching mate.
🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 i got this mentality with my XB Wagon at the moment i see the patches of bog, i know the bottom of 3/4 of my doors is rusted out and the tailgate needs replacing. I think about tearing it down and fixing that but then its a can of worms and just want to have fun... so I pretty much just took 3 grand and dumped it into a 302 and a FMX instead, just so I could get it on the road and have fun with it before worrying about all the other cosmetics.
A Roadstoration if you will fix her up enough to just get it back on the road.
Yep that’s my angle with some of my cars too. If they run and drive it’s easy to stay motivated and if you find another panel and repair it then swap over it never stopped being driven
Cheers again mate🍺🍺👍
Awesome video. Looking forward to the next one.
Hang around Jamie these heaps more coming
🍺🍺👍
What did they want for the Ford Pickup, would of liked to have seen it, best Enigine for for 351 Cleveland. If your doing doors on the inside there is a Product we started using rather than Cardboard it is a type of Plastic comes in 4x8' sheets, thickness about 1/165h or inch, we always used the 1/8th inch product. The cardboard door panels in our wet climate did not stand up so we went for the plastic and it was pretty cheap.
🍺🍺👍
I feel that exact same way about Convo pros and these old holdens
They’re a great looking wheel too.
🍺🍺👍
What an awesome episode loved every minute of it mate!!
Look forward to the next one!!
So glad to find your channel!!
Thanks mate I appreciate ya saying and yeah do stick around as there’s heaps more coming. 🍺🍺🤷🏼♂️

I just keep my eyes and ears open mate haha 🍺👍
That body colour was the most popular metallic colour back when the HQ was new. It was called "Patina Gold" in the brochures.
It sure is patina gold mate , kind of fitting considering I’m not painting it right now .
🍺🍺👍
Dam! Miss my HQ now! 😆
Love how you just get in and get it done! Awesome!

Contact Crow Cams, you will need to work out the exact compression ratio, you can go with a bigger cam to lower your dynamic compression ratio.
You can't compress anything until the inlet valve closes.
Makes for an angrier idle too.
Food for thaught.
Bench seat too if you got a GF
Hey Ross that’s for watching mate yeah I know what your saying mate but I’m unsure if the block was decked to zero or not so all the calculations in world won’t matter in the end , I’m just going to run it and creep up on the timing so see where it’s happy Hahhaha
Hang around mate there’s heaps more coming

But really, thanx for sharing what you have learnt over years.
No drama Julian , hang around mate as there is heaps more coming mate

So envious of you Aussies being able to find theses 70s cars here in NZ when you do find one it’s super expensive Always look forward to your videos coming out 👍🏻
Thanks Bruce
Mate they a crazy $$$ here too.
Cheers 🍺🍺👍
As Aussie's we feel the same when we look at the USA and how they can pick up running and driving 70's classics for less than 2 and a half grand.
"the wave of misery you'll feel is like no other" hahaha spot on mate!
Hahaha yep you would have to invent a new emotion to describe it properly hahhha

@@backshed5295 no worries looking forward to , when you talk about lifters, down the track looking to replace cam and lifters etc in my Holden 308.
To push the button down on the key barrel it needs to be turned back to accessories which obviously you can’t do without a key. So smacking with a hammer and screwdriver is about all you can do. Works though, I used to work in a wrecking yard.
Ya nailed it mate that’s exactly what was happening Hahhaha
Thanks for watching Mark
