I drive a Valiant AP6 and I love it. I live in Wagga Wagga and I love to see you doing up old cars the government has a lot to answer for after they destroyed so many beautiful old cars in the 2000’s with the buy backs cars we payed $500 for are now worth $10,000 and cars we’d pay $10,000 are in the 50’s plus. The best thing about owning an old car is everyone loves them and they don’t go down in value they go up.

My girls (4), all adults now, had their own cars from around age 3. And spent a lot of the time in the shed with me either fixing or, in the case of my Charger, a complete strip down and rebuild. And I have to laugh when it's them that are far more capable of doing their own repairs or maintenance than any of their guys. Social media and gaming consoles have a lot to answer for. It's made idiots out a lot. My biggest laugh was when my then 12 year old daughter had to show her 23 year old brother in law how to change the oil, and a water pump, in his VR Commie. And this boy grew up on the land! 😀

Hey Mick. Talk about a blast from the past, mate. A mate of Dad's had one back in the day - same colour as that one as a matter of fact. Being the mid-70s, he got it repainted a lovely shade of Candy-apple Red metallic, dropped its nose so it looked 'raked' (another 70's fashion that "looked cool" but did absolutely nothing for the car's handling except ruin it) and put a set of Aunger Hustlers and a large exhaust and extractors on the beast. She ran the old Torqueflite tranny too and boy could that old bus haul arse! Always put a smile on my face to hear that thing wind up, as I loved my 6-pots even back then and being in it was awesome - especially when the trans made the jump to the next gear and you got the kick in the back as she started pulling away hard. I remember looking at it as a kid and thinking it would look better if the arse end was the same height as he made the nose, but I was equivocally told to go bag me head when I suggested it.....and what would a 7-year-old know anyway, eh?
It was great hearing the donk come around too - I think you started out being down at least a couple as she was a bit gallopy on turnover, but they came back around and now has a much more even cranking sound (albeit with the current ropey starter).....and it could be down to just an electrical misfire now. Them plugs and leads aren't exactly new off the shelf, eh....but man, what a ripper of an engine even on five and a half! Hope that bloody clutch breaks free for you though - are you sure she's moving the fork on the box? If she had brakes, you could try stalling it in first gear with the brake - get her up to about 10mph and then stomp the brake and let it go or stomp it and stall it so she rocks on the clutch plate. Mind you, if she's been in the hay since the mid-80s as you suspect, chances are she's a box-out job with a chisel and four-pounder or maybe a jackhammer, eh? What a bugger.
Man, that old paint came back good! Did the 1500-grit trick with my Stag, although I started with 600 then 1000 because there was some pimpling in the paint that the 1500 wouldn't shift. Car had been repainted around 1985 and man, could you smell it when the sandpaper got into it! Brought the paint up terrific though - and even though it was crazed in a couple of places, she looked a million dollars better than she had with the old oxidised and pimply topcoat. Love how the inside of the doors and everything on the Val came around too, man. Just a pity about them floors, eh. Got my cars parked outside at the moment and with them all having leaky windscreens and Auckland going through the monsoon season (commonly known locally as "winter"), I lifted the carpet and underlay in all of them and put it on the seats before drilling a couple of holes in the lowest part of front and rear floorpans on each side. Will put bungs in them when I pull the cars back inside, but for now, water goes in, washes the dirt off the painted floors and goes out the holes again, so I'm a happy camper!
Enjoyed that one a lot, mate. Don't see many APs around any more at all - they used to be as common as muck and usually with the lower four inches of both rear guards missing.....and from what you showed sitting behind the bung on the inner guard, its not surprising why. Will look forward to the next instalment on this beasty. All the best

So many memories as a kid and growing up with dad's Valiant. I wish I could find one, you just don't see AP5s anymore, I suppose almost all are gone now. Don't normally comment on anyone's video often, but as a fellow Aussie of vintage. Your video's are bloody fantastic mate & @1:23:59 I'm damn sure you are the first person to strip those doors since it was built, also pretty sure you're right about the "AP" designation. Late to this video, but a pleasure to watch, many memories working on my uncle's AP5 with my old man and my cousin way back in the day.. by the way the ride height looks fine to me.. lowered enough cars, too many issues.. cracked extractors, approaching speed bumps at an angle, can't put any weight in, blah blah.. rant over.. looks good, another oldie saved. Actually love the fact they are everyday family cars that were the first to be forgotten.. Most Aussies might have dreamed of a GT or Monaro, but drove a Falcon or Kingswood or regular Valiant.. love it.. J.

She is looking pretty sweet! Almost looked like a completed restoration in that last dusk shot before the end. Never had much experience with Valiants, they seemed to be a little shunned compared to the Fords and Holden's of similar era (the cars in reach of a boys first car in the late 70's, early 80's.) I love that instrument cluster! So weird the temp and petrol gauge were almost acting like the amp gauge should have. Also I imagine that sun visor would be pretty rare. I remember pulling off the one that came with my XK Falcon to replace it with a vinyl strip with 'Ford' written on it. As a good bloke once said 'At no stage did I say I was smart' ha ha Very much enjoying these videos mate. Thank you for taking the time to share. Wonderful work.

In 1966, my dad could have bought a brand new HR Holden or XR Falcon, but opted for a new VC Valiant wagon. He felt it offered the best six of the trio. The Valiant was probably also the biggest in terms of space and towing capacity.
In the 60's, the Valiants were the best cars on the market.......and sold well.
After 1971 with the ungainly and bloated VH, sales began a steady slide.
