- This episode we finish the WB Statesman rescue from a few episodes ago.
She gets a full exhaust, a few repairs to get rego'd then hits the road for the first time in god knows how many years.
SO WHAT IS BACKSHED ALL ABOUT ?
WE ARE ALL ABOUT SAVING OLD CLASSIC CARS AND MODIFIYING SOME ALONG THE WAY TOO.
WE LOVE THE CLASSIC RESCUE , FIRST WASH ,FIRST START IN YEARS TYPE OF THING, GETTING OLD JUNK RUNNING AND DRIVING THEN PUT BACK ON THE ROAD AFTER YEARS OF BEING LEFT TO ROT IS WHAT WE DO.
IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOUR INTO FORD , HOLDEN , CHEVY , BIG BLOCK SMALL BLOCK OR ANYTHING IN BETWEEN WE MIGHT HAVE A VIDEO FOR YOU TO WATCH. IVE HAVE AND HAVE HAD A LOT OF CARS INCLUDING XB COUPE , XY FACLON GT , EH HOLDEN , F100 , VB COMMODORE , HQ SEDAN AND WAGON , CORTINA , VALIANT AND SO MANY MORE SO THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. IN ON OF OUR VIDEOS I PRETTY MUCH WENT TO HEAVEN FINDING A WRECKING YARD / JUNKARD WHERE THERE WAS EVERYTHING YOU COULD DREAM OF INCLUDING A MONARO , CHARGER , VALIANT PACER , A FALCON COUPE , TORANA , CADILLAC , SOME CHEVY'S EVEN SOME JDM CARS LIKE DATSUN , NISSAN SKYLINE , MITSUBISHI SCORPION BUT IT DIDN'T STOP THERE EVEN 4X4 LIKE A HJ 45 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER AND A 60 SERIES WAGON . I REALLY HAVE NO BIAS I LOVE RESCUING THEM ALL SO DO STICK AROUND AS YOUR BOUND TO SEE SOMETHING YOU LIKE. CHEERS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WATCH . MICK
If you own a shed and aren’t immediately compelled to absorb this series including golf carts I don’t know what’s stopping you unless you have gone straight out to the shed to fix something on your own bus! Great work in putting these together.
@@kelvynbettridge 🍺🍺👍
Great job getting the old girl back on the road.
Gotta love seeing your young fella spending time with you while your working on these old bangers. You''ll be amazed at how much he really learns, not just about cars but about about being practical in his future life. I spent time with my old man at his work, at home in the shed and out and about. It's only now I realise how good that was for me.
Kids absorb more than you teach them. Reckon your young bloke is set for life.
Cheers Terry🍺🍺👍
Mate, you do a good job with your simple explanations, which we all learn from. I particularly like your persistence with stock parts, namely the Rochester, it would be so easy to do a LS conversion or drop the ride height and put some wide wheels on it. Glad you are teaching us while keeping it stock.
Thank J b
I really do appreciate you watching mate
Save what you can !
Thanks mate
👍🍺
Mate , I love your channel. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort, it’s much appreciated. 👍🏻
Hey Trent thanks for the great comment mate I really do appreciate it.
Cheers for watching
🍺🍺👍
Back in the 80’s Mick that would have been every young fellas wet dream to get behind the wheel of a Statesman.
@@kymmarshall1116 100% mate , i liked the Hz as a mate had 1👍🍺
Just stumbled on to your channel, great videos mate, really enjoying watching your adventures, terrific, thanks, cheers 👏👏
Cheers David I appreciate ya finding me hahah 🍺🍺👍
I worked in the factory when these were being made. I worked in the paint shop and probably painted your car I think it's Atlantis blue and when I worked overtime in the vehicle assembly plant I got to drive them off of the line and park them in the paddock. In the 80s I had a HJ Statesman Deville every time I had it tuned up I would go and check plug 8 witch was right up against the Aircon-heater box and was a real bugger to get out. I made a specially angled spanner to get to it and 9 out of 10 times they left the old plug in and said they couldn't get it out. She was a beauty too White with a white vinyl roof and imitation chrome spoke wheels it looked like Then Prime minister Malcom Frazer's car I even had a drunk throw a bear bottle at me once he thought I was him.
Hahahahha. That’s awesome!
Yep Atlantis blue.
Thanks heaps for watching Geoff.
Cheers 🍺👍
the way I do that plug is I put the plug socket over the plug from underneath the car and crack it open with a ring spanner over the plug socket, then just remove by hand - found it easy that way (pref a cold engine!) Gu.ess everyone has their own methods
@@andrewhorobin2156 I wish I still had my Statesman she was a beautiful car and she would be worth a bit now.
Slowly working my way through your back log of vid's, love the WB mate, brings back so many memories. I wish I'd kept all my old cars, I'd be a F'n millionaire, HG premier, HT Monaro, XY Fairmont and many many more and don't get me started on the bikes I've owned otherwise I'd be in tears. Love the show mate, especially how you go to the trouble of explaining what and why you do things to get these old girls going. Cheers buddy.
Thanks Tony 🍺🍺👍
Absolutely loved the WB Statesmans. Such a majestic car...and every bit as good looking as a Merc or BMW of the time. I used to drive them brand new when I was working for Thrify Rent A Car in the 80's. I remember how light it was to steer with so much assistance coming from it's power steering - yet so direct because of the tight steering ratio. Was a lot of fun in the wet!
Cheers for watching mate
🍺👍
Mate loving the bloopers. Hilarious, best channel I've found in ages. Keep up the great work! And thankyou.
@@adamfulford6423 cheers adam thanks 👍🍺
The HQ to WB Statesman's looked gorgeous. I love what you are doing to this beauty, keeping it stock. A rolling tribute to when the name Statesman stood for something. Very nice mate.
Thanks mate
I really appreciate you watching mate.
🍺👍
Great old car brother, I really do love the old GM's. Of course we never had Holdens here in the states but this car reminds me of my old Malibu or Impala, sure miss those cars, new cars have no soul which is why I luv the oldies. Keep up the good work my friend.
Thanks Rowdy
Heaps more coming mate.
I’ve got some Chevy stuff coming mate that you will be more familiar with , please feel free to share the channel with your US friends it’s great to see people from other countries watching.
Cheers mate 🍺👍
wow!! those white walls make the car really pop 👍

Mick, you can find those small Welch Plugs at your local Mower Parts sales. They come in various sizes for Mower Carbs.
🍺👍
One of the best Holdens ever WB Statesman & Caprice !
She is very cool.
Thanks for watching Harry
Cheers mate 🍺🍺
Good choice in keeping the Rochester! I blueprinted and custom jetted a few on my 5 litres V8's, and they always run better than a Holley. Same goes for the V5H manifold. That's been my experience anyway.....
🍺👍
Rochester carburettors are an awesome fuel delivery product that with the right jets and adjustment to the secondary throttle opening position produce great performance. Also they say they are rated to about 750 CFM.👍
🍺👍
Thanks for showing the Rochester drain down issue. My 81 Caprice does the exact same thing..leave a few days and you need to crank for about 5 seconds then pump and it will fire up..it seems to be a very common problem reading US forums..but great that you highlighted and showed the issue.
Yeah I’ve read a bit on it since , they are called Well plugs and it’s super common. Bit of JB Weld on the ends of them fixes it. Hahaha be warned they are fiddlie going back together !
I’ve got a number of a guy that will do it exchange or on your carb for you if you want to contact me through Fb Backshed or Instagram backshedmick I’ll message it to you.
Thanks for watching Andrew
Cheers 🍺🍺👍
Yea, I am no mechanic and when I saw you cutting and welding in the muffler after seeing a new one I was like wow did you order the wrong one. But when you said it was cast late in the arvo, all they wanted to do was hit the pub early. “Anyway stop whinging and get on with it”. What an absolute classic and it looks awesome, cheers 🍻
Hahhahaha glad you enjoyed it mate.
Cheers for watching Craig

I had similar problems a few months ago with my 88 VL V8 that had been in storage and not started for 21 years.Fuel ,cooling ,exhaust ,braking system all had to be repaired/replaced.And still finding problems. We endure the same journey to get these back on the road either burning or debarking hands it worth it in the end.🇦🇺👍👍👍👍
It sure is Steve
Thanks for watching mate an good luck with your VL
🍺👍
Brings back a lot of memories. My father had a couple of Statesmans and I had a '69 Premier with the 5litre V8. Probably did 90% of the work on them myself. Kept the Premier running for over 500,000 miles before some idiot parked a Landcruiser in the back of it. Yeah you have to learn by doing. My father was a good bush mechanic and I helped him rebuild a car when i was about 10. He taught me a lot and my son is a far better mechanic than I am.
I do love the memories car bring along with them .
Cheers for watching Gary
🍺👍
One of the first lessons i was taught by my father was do the plugs up by hand then gently nip them with the tools. Love the videos, keep them up!
Yep good advise !
Thanks for watching mate.
🍺👍
Well mate , you know that car as a holden, while in the states it is a Chevrolet. Chevrolet engineers found that the car required a check valve on the fuel filter to prevent this very thing from happening. Remove the fuel inlet fitting from the carburetor and check to see if it has the right filter. Great video! {edit} Just from one car guy to another, a piece of 3/8 fuel line slipped over the porcelain on the plug makes it easier to start the thread proper. Also it helps to protect from breakin' if you work over a concrete floor and fumble the plug. I admit to fumbling " a couple" or so.
Mate that’s a good one ! I’ve never done the hose over the plug but I see how that would help.
Cheers mate i really appreciate ya watching.
🍺👍
the only thing the WB shares with anything from the US is the turbo 350, the rochester and the badge. The engine is an Australian 308 iron lion and the entire car design is Australian only. Designed and built here.
To somebody who's a novice your Tips are priceless Mate, I haven't got the space anymore for Cars, so I collect Motorbikes-7 & counting, 70's to 90's only of course 👍
Cheers John
🍺🍺👍
Great stuff again.
You've stirred the tip jar.
Rochester uses needle valve metering in jets like a 2 stroke dirt bike.
Wind plugs and bolts in backwards first, feel for the clicks with your eyes closed.
Sounds silly I know.
Try this on your next sump plug with your eyes open.
Pointer finger in centre of plug, wind it out till it clicks twice.
Then go up periscope.
Level expert oil changes coming your way when you get it right.
Not one drop of oil on the ground.
Hit up a fridge place for a 6 pack of fridge boxes while learning.
24 free leak catchers.
Buy some universal plastic transmission plugs. Best tool ever, saves on tyranny fluid.
Use card board templates on first time tear downs.
Sketch a basic shape of the patient dots where bolts/ screws have been living. Poke them in their home, this is a great stripped bolt detector as well, dunk in petty 1st if too oily.
This will reduce the OCD gift we both share.
My old taught me the greese spigot bearing exit trick, but bread is no mess at all. (DO NO use on LS engine family ! )
I'm sure you have a bolt bucket, a great bolt hole chaser is a bolt with 3 cuts through the threads 120° apart.
A new plug with earth strap cut off makes a great spark checker.
Just don't ever drop it.
Holden V8' have design flaw in the timing cover, when they corrode coolant goes cranky.
It's a bitch to diagnose.
Water pumps that have been sitting, the bottom of the shaft rust's like exposed valve stems.
Then it's seal gets reemed over sized, you know happens then.
Don't use the pump that looks like an alternater.
Next you want to siphon fuel push the fuel out of the tank / jerry can with air.
It takes bugger all pressure when the air volume in the vessel is small.
That's how my old boy would clear or prime a diesel fuel line.
I watched him do it to a Mack truck, and old fuel cap with a long shade valve sikaflexed in. 5 PSI is too much, but it won't be a problem unless there is a leak.
Cause 100 square inches of fuel surface is
500 PSI of home made GERNI as he told me.
How do you know Dad ?
Compressed air is the most dangerous shit ever next to Acetylene.
Check out MBE cylinder heads for valve / spring / inlet manifold porn.
One last tip
Holden V8 timing chain stretch will have big movement of crank back and forth before the rotor button moves, this check works on any chain drive.
Stubborn high torque balancer bolts like a VN V6, you can place a tube over a long breaker bar (single hex socket) resting
On passenger side chassis rail.
Use a charged jumper box aswell, the starter motor will crack the bolt and wind it out quicker than you can say
i wish I filmed it.
Great work, I'm stealing your carb on screw driver trick.
.
Good one, thanks mate.
You are a great teacher. They way you explain things is simple to follow and just brilliant.
Cheers mate kind of you to say
🍺👍
Hi, a tip if you are interested. When installing a new seal, it is good practice to put a bit ot gease or oil on the seal face. This will aid in bedding the seal in and will prevent it binding on the shaft. Done this for years, and found the seals last longer...
Yep I hear ya mate you must have skipped through a bit because I did exactly that bud. Cheers mate for watching 🍺👍

We all have that undiscovered emotion buried deep inside.......I haven't seen it lately but I know ill experience it again! 👍
Hahahahha
Yeah 4ndy it lives in us deep down hahahha
I forgot to mention LANOLIN. Sheep oil. Get the basic raw one. Wipe it on with a rag. After it dries you can buff it to a shine with a dry rag.
I use Lanotec Heavy Duty, its on my roller doors and a few other things around the house.
Ever seen a rusty sheep?
🍺🍺👍
Nice grandpa spec stato 👍🏻
Hahhaha yep she is grandpa spec 🍺🍺👍
Only thing I don't like was hitting the column nut. The nylon pin for the collapsible shaft can break and those top bearings are a bugger once worn out. Love the car and all you do.
Yeah I guess if you got carried away belting on it mate. Bit of upward pressure from your knees and 3 taps haven’t broke 1 yet but there’s always a first time man.
🍺👍I appreciate ya watching mate.
Wow! Just look at what you've done with this - what a beautiful car. Love it.
Also love your commentary: Expert and unmistakeably laid back Australian style - I reckon you could just leave in what you think are "bloopers"!

Penetrol, after sanding down. But you must put something over it. I left it bare for a few months and the rust was starting to come thru, but i live only 200m from the beach, my home gets covered in salt.

Hi Like your channel bit more like a normal human.
I use Duralex paint, old aussie company before dulux existed in OZ , "rust convert", great product water based can be left as a primer and stays stable. Great thing some other ones I have used dry up in the container this one remains liquid. buy direct from them in Rydalmere NSW
Hahaha I’m not sure how much of a normal human I am? My wife says Man child is probably more accurate.
I’ll check out the products Rolf.
Thanks for watching buddy
I've been looking for other rust convertor brands, but googling them is impossible.
EBay has phosphoric acid, 90% pure for cheap, but I'd love to try some gel or a way to make it gel
I just pumped that Rolf thinks I a normal human! Hahhahah
Mate I do try to keep it about our cars not anything else.
Mate for good information and advice I’ve found over the years that a guy sitting on a milk crate in the shed with a beer in his hand is hard to go past onya 🤙
🍺👍
To remove the steering wheel hit the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock alternately, starting slow and build up speed and pressure until the wheel is jarred free of the spline never hit the shafts with a hammer. Not only can you damage the tread but you can shear the rivets that allow the column to claps in an accident.
Thanks Craig , you clearly skipped a lot of the video as the prevention of thread damage was addressed. With no cross section in that steering wheel hitting behind the outer rim does nothing accept flex. Upward pressure from your knees and gentle tap is the way IVE done it for years and not broke 1 yet Craig ,maybe one day I suppose but until then 👍
Thanks for watching again Craig Grundy
