The game being shorter and replayable is actually a good thing for me. I’m getting kinda sick of every game having a 60+ hour story. I could easily grind through those as a kid, but now that I’ve got responsibilities and shit, I just don’t have the time. Short, sweet, and replayable sounds amazing.

I'm in the same position. Probably why I'm not going anywhere near 70 hour RPGs anymore.
I'd rather play a fun exciting solid 20 hour game than something that is stretched out to fill the 70 hour requirement.
But to be fair I don't want to face the same boss 8-20 times because it can one shot me, either.
Kind of tired of badly balanced games with easy minions and over the top bosses.

Indeed sekiro, doom eternal, malicious, dmc etc there are plenty of REALLY good really fun linear games out there that focus hard on mastery of combat with very little parkour and exploration in between
A short game even like 10 hours can sometimes be the game where you put the most hours in cause you simply replay it over and over to the point where you can get 200 hours in meanwhile a long game after you finish 1 playthrough after 100 hours you really don't wanna replay it cause of how slow it can be "not all long games feel like this prime examples are elden ring, Zelda or mh"
A great indie example is bleed 2 that's like 2 hours long maybe less yet I played it for like 50 hours or more trying to master speedruns , higher difficulties , characters , weapons etc

The whole thing with NG+ giving new things to do is a very classic AC thing. Hell, the first AC had a whole system for going into debt, and you could be put so deep into debt that you're forced to sell your body to military science. This caused a full reset of your campaign progress, but you also got a permanent buff every time you "failed" and got new dialogues and I think a couple missions, too.

I still see them in VI, but they're not customizable lol. Shame, I loved the customization most. Got into AC with 3, had a friend. That was my first taste. For Answer is my absolute favorite though. "By X point in the game, I wasn't even thinking about the controls."
As a longtime AC player, that's great to hear. Back when I was super into AC3, it really felt like you were having to fight the mech to get it to do what you wanted to, no matter how close I felt to pure muscle memory, I just never got to that point. The downside to that is that the game always felt difficult, but the upside was just how accomplishing it felt to finally beat that mission or arena opponent I'd be struggling with. The sweat on the controller and my brow, the way I'd feel almost winded at the end of an encounter was so immersive. The less than ideal controls really made it feel like I was controlling something made of a bunch of different parts I was having to make work. I know I'm probably sending a lot of mixed messages, but Armored Core is a mixed message itself. You're living this power fantasy, but the threat of debt (which I know isn't in this, but still) and knowing you aren't always doing the most ethical or moral thing really mirrors our world in a way you don't often see.
I'm so psyched for AC6. It's preloading now.

What I've always loved about the Armored Core series is that it's not about grinding, it's about finding the build that carries you to victory.
Games like Elden Ring allow you to grind until you can brute-force the boss in your way, but Armored Core encourages you to tweak your build until you find something that works.
My favorite approach is to build multiple ACs that are each specialized to different tasks. If one AC doesn't work, try another. If that doesn't work, then it's tinkering time.

I will say that it can definitely get overwhelming with everything that needs to be kept track of during combat, especially boss fights. I've mitigated this a bit by using only passive OST chip upgrades instead of even more attacks that I could do and by not using weapons that have a charge option to their attack. Even still, when things are tense and there's a lot happening on the screen, I'll often just mash my weapons not knowing if they are off cooldown or not.

Pretty much spot on with the 8/10 reviewers give it, a lot of them are even saying "I gave it -1 because its about mechs" like somehow the topic of the game is a reason to reduce its score (though this happens with "J"RPGs too for not being made by Bethesda style "rpg")
edit: I will say, this sounds a lot like Ace Combat as well. Which has that same feel as a mech game, because a lot of mech media is just the same as fighter pilots but they're robots.

No it won't outsell Elden Ring, but for those of us who grew up on the series, it's one hell of an appetizer for what will hopefully become a phoenix like revival of a beloved mech franchise. Nice seeing you enjoy the game Pine, a few things I'd mention though:
    1. You can replay missions so most things aren't truly missable, some may be locked depending on your branching paths but for the most part you can do a blind run then come back for a collection run
    2. The reason why these kinds of games are short is cuz of it being linear and the main draw of these games being customizing a mech and experiencing tons of variety to find the one that you like. I'm in a similar camp to you where I usually beat games rather quickly compared to the expected runtime but the variety of stuff to mess around with (and customize) has alr made me clock 18.4h before ch4.
    3. I'm not a vet but previous entries of AC did make you go into debt and effectively game over, they decided to tone it down rather heavily in 6, for better and worse.
Overall though, I think your views will definitely help more people who have 0 experience with any mecha genre games. Keep up the good work!

For me, AC6 was the most enjoyable game I've played in a long time. I like the _Souls_ series (well, except DS2) and _Elden Ring,_ but often enough my enjoyment turned to frustration. It never felt that with AC6, even when Balteus turned into a wall, for me. Maybe it's just generally easier than those others games, but a major part is the fact that you're not quite so locked into a build. Re-speccing is so much easier and without hassle. At no point did the wall feel insurmountable and every boss I conquered made me feel great. Conversely, by the time I beat Malenia, I felt positively dead inside. I barely reacted to the victory. AC6's engaging gameplay, more conventional narrative and great characters really held me more than any game I've played in a long time.

I’ve been playing AC since the very first one, back when you could play multiplayer with 2 PS1s and a link cable, which we did in out first apartment with 2 huge CRT TVs and it was glorious. I realize that there probably aren’t many people around that have played them all at launch, so after watching the video, here are some comments:
Multiplayer is phenomenal, and the longevity of the games for me was largely due to this. This was before online, so it was either split screen or link cable and was great fun at LAN parties. What I’d REALLY like to see is coop, as multiplayer was always 1v1 area fighting.
Regarding gear… there is no “best”. Every single thing in the game has a use. You need to balance the stats. Legs need to support the rest of the Core, so you might need to get the dual small missile launcher vs the quad, or medium missile launcher. Weaker weapons can be faster, lighter, less heat, lower power draw, etc., which are all important if you want to make a mech that’s fast and dances around the range of other mechs. Heavier gear gives more AC points, more ammo, heavier munitions, but with that comes higher costs down the line. You can go full tank mode and get treads with dual grenade launchers and just outlast your opponent, or you can make a sniper with the fastest legs that can outrun targeting scanners. This is the best part of the game, imo, the absolute freedom to hand craft a Core that matches what YOU want, not just what’s “best”.
The newgame+ type gameplay here is something they’ve done in the previous games. The gameplay was always mission based where you’re logged into a hub and take missions which involve one contained map with a set goal, and maybe sone secondary goals. Secret/missable parts were there since the beginning also. They’re not mandatory but usually offered some unique twist or something fun to mess around with (like the only laser sword that shot a beam).
Free roam was never an gameplay element in the series. The missions are all one sortie or contract at a time for a company, where eventually you reach branching paths for mission choices. For example, a contract to sabotage a company vs a contract to defend that same company from sabotage, you can’t realistically do both and once you’re pissed off that company the story evolves in that direction with subsequent missions. Once you do that, you’re locked into following the relevant path.
Arena mode was first introduced in the 3rd AC game on PS1 and was always my favorite thing to do as it gave you the most creative freedom to come up with crazy mech choices, assuming they still let you pick which map to do the arena matches on.
I can go on, but I’m not even sure anyone will read this lol. I just love this series so much and didn’t really care for the post-PS2 games so I’m hoping this brings it back to what I remember. They changed the control scheme in the 360/PS3 generation games, and I had played the PS1-PS2 games so much that I couldn’t adapt to new muscle memory and I just gave up after a while. This is really what I’m looking for commentary on, but the game is out tomorrow and I doubt anyone will talk about this point anyway.

As someone whose introduction to FromSoft was with Armored Core, this game was a return to form.
I loved the short missions/small maps not only because it's such breath of fresh air amongst the massive exploration type games that are now commonplace today, but also because (like the early games) it helps hammer home that you're a merc who's in it for the cash. That you're working for megacorporations that have so much money and so much to do, that they're willing to pay some random to do the easy menial stuff. It's like getting paid a relatively exorbitant sum for something that "could've just been an email".
One thing that I wish they kept from the old games was how easy it was to finish a mission either with 0 income or in debt. Would've added more challenge to the game

There are actually a lot of similar elements between Dark Souls and AC. one being the weight and stamina/energy bar. Those thins are universal between both. in AC you don't wanna over-boost and use a high energy weapon because you will burn out, same with Souls if you roll 4 times then use a heavy attack you stamina is gone. The part have weight like the armor you get in souls does and plays a part in how fast or slow you are. Overall great video and glad you like the game.

Love how they kept hidden parts as well as replayable missions and assembly changes if you die. Nice
