Hi we're the devs of En Garde! Thank you for playing and enjoying our game! We actually called it "the Dark Souls of swashbuckler games" as a joke sometimes during development, but never thought we'd end up in your videos alongside actual Souls-like games :')
The game seems so fun and I hope you can produce new mechanics/environmental techniques to keep the game interesting, I would still probably play it without the new stuff lol
That moment in En Garde where the enemy jumps up the table for high ground but you kick from underneath them felt so real like from a old movie. So incredibly simple yet so cool
Episode 20 is a pretty huge milestone, so I just wanted to say I really do appreciate everyone who watches. I never originally intended on this to be a series and I fully expected that first video to bomb since it was pretty different from what I did before. We were aware that our game's content felt lacking, which is why we are focusing on creating new unique content moving forward. We have just added a new rune meta-game feature to the demo that allows players to experiment with different builds. Now, it's time to get back to creating new gear, enemies and zones.
Personally, I think secret rooms and such would be a good fit and would greatly expand the exploration aspect of the game. Anyway, it already looks promising and I'm curious to see how it will develop. I'm probably gonna buy it.

I'd love an eventual "where are they now" video where you take some of the early access games and share your thoughts once they've fully been released although I wouldn't be surprised if you've not already made plans for this
Good idea, since 20 episodes seen enough to have a couple of releases but that still sounds like a one off video than a whole series, would still be good to see tho
@@gabriellarena2256considering a lot of the games are very underground thus likely to be abandoned you probably would only have enough for 1 vid anyways
Hi, we are the devs of Strayed Lights, thank you so much for showcasing our game! The game original difficulty was meant to make it an "accessible souls-like", to allow everyone to experience the flow of combat in a forgiving way. For more skillful players we are now releasing a free content update with new difficulty modes, and there's also a challenge boss rush mode for the post-game! Also the game will be discounted on Steam during the Summer Sales starting this June 29th!
Hello, thank you for visiting Krat. We are glad that you enjoyed your brief visit. Many other visitors shared their opinions regarding the parry & dodge mechanics which we are further developing before our grand invitation. We hope to see you soon again in Krat.
The dodge was fine, I usually just clicked it 2-3 times. I got through even the 3rd boss, which most people said had to be perfect parried, without parrying using dodge. In fact, he only took me maybe 4-5 tries using these techniques.
The game looks and feels great! On the difficulty though, I think the reason people are so divided on it is due to the parry system. Some of the stronger enemies in the demo kind of need you to be good at parrying and taking advantage of groggy, otherwise they feel like damage sponges that hit like freight trucks. Fighting them normally is an absolute nightmare, but the moment you learn how to parry them they become largely trivial. I'm guessing that's why some people have a lot of trouble, and some get through it just fine.
I figure the Quartz will let us augment the dodging to be more like "other experiences" or enhance the Guard and attacking to adjust to our playstyle. As customizeable as a puppet should be, suited to the hands of its controller.
En Garde and Bad Boro look really cool and fun! They each have a recognizable aesthetic, a variety of interesting mechanics that interact well with the encounters, and Bad Boro's boss design was awesome. Also, "Twinkified Pinocchio" made me guffaw lol.
Hi Iron Pineapple. We are the devs of Rudra: A Tale of Time. Thank you so much for playing our game and sharing that experience with your audience. We all were excited to see you defeat the final boss. Your video gave us good feedback and we have just published a new update fixing the graphical issues that you faced.
As a hindu myself. I have always wanted more ganes likes like Raji and stuff who dive deep into Hindu mythology (maybe a Mahabharata game lol that would be sick). But lots and lots and lots of development, marketing and resources would be needed to make that game shine. Hope you guys keep working on it and just a prototype next time i hear about it ❤
Bad Boro seems like it just has so much effort and personality put into it, I would absolutely love to play the full game. Aaand the devs channel is already at 3k subs so I'm not the only one :)
Tons of personality for sure, (and not saying this negatively just I think this was the point) heavily inspired by Alien Hominid which is really cool to see. I loved that game as a kid
It seems to have a lot going for it. But, as controversial as it is to say about a souls-like, it seems they need to lower the tankiness of enemies across the board, especially for the easy mods, attacks just don't seem satisfying. It just seems like "difficulty" for difficulties sake
@@who3730 Pretty sure that if it's the case described, it plots a bezier and then animates the pot through it, still not exactly cup of cake to time the animation with all of that
I just wanted to say (knowing it won't be read) that this series has inspired me to work parttime on a little soulslike game of my own. Probably wont be released anywhere- I just had a fun idea for a mechanic I wanted to try- but it's still a fun ride so far. Excited to see the next video!
He didn't just read it, Iron Pineapple himSELF loved your comment! You better do your best to complete that little souls-like while taking care of yourself mentally or Iron Pineapple will always be missing something from his content. Good luck !!!
I think the other thing that intrigues me the most about it is that it’s a little light hearted. I don’t see why the soulslike gameplay is almost always accompanied by dread, depression and bleakness.
@@JimboCruntz Because most of the souls-like games were just trying to rip off Dark Souls and don't want to exert effort into making something new. Since Dark Souls' atmosphere is bleak, they will make their games bleak too. I'm so glad En Garde decided to make something of its own rather than making a game from a checklist. This is really a welcome change.
Fun fact. In Lies of P the person called Sophia ( lady in blue who acts like a fire keeper) is voiced by the same person who voiced Millicent in Elden Ring
From what we saw in the video, I think you just made the first game, En Garde, blow up! It actually looked like a decently quality game with a cool world, cool art, and amazing design!
Princess Bride is truly the first Souls-like. It's got a mysterious sword-wielding main character, quirky side characters, hidden paths, and a system where Wesley dies and comes back without his stuff. Not to mention Fezzik, Dread Lord of Cinder! EDIT: And of course, a deadly swamp level.
I dont care how vague the "souls-like" definition has to get, please never stop doing these. The genuinely life-changing spotlight you put on indie devs is something I cant get enough of and I've played so many amazing games I never would've even heard of if not for this series.
@@jogoegel1279 That's because it was the different En Garde. There was an older version of it which was basically a student project and this is probably their full fledged game attempt.
38:00 if you use the gesture "show clothing" next to her after getting the outfit she gifts you, she has extra dialogue and there is another "your springs are reacting" Looks like you have to act like a human as much as possible to have your springs react, which might be for a good ending
@@GrenzRell yeah it would definitely have to play into the "real boy" thing, seems somewhat loosely like eating the third of an umbilical cords in Bloodborne for its 'secret' ending
en garde doesn't seem like a souls like but it's the kind of environment I always hope for in a souls like. Something lighthearted, bright, with a mix of silly antics with good fight choreography. I can dig it.
I swear this is my favourite series on RUclips by now. I could rewatch these videos a hundred times. Your commentary is descriptive and entertaining, your reactions are genuine, your personality is down to earth, your voice is really nice to listen to, the editing and cutting of these videos is phenomenal, it's nothing short of a good time. Feels like sitting down with a buddy and having him tell you about cool games he played recently. You rock, Iron Pineapple. Thanks for keeping this series going, it's something I can always come back to and every new entry gets me hyped for (thankfully an hour by now) of content I can relax to.
I could definitely see Lies of P having a late game item that let's you translate what the puppets are saying in NG+ as a little treat for lore chasers. Looking forward to the full game reviews.
Tanthious is one of my favorite games you've ever covered. The canned Unity animations, the awkward-yet-inexplicably-destructive jump kick, the way they depict your character as a youth by just shrinking them down into a tiny man at 22:01... masterpiece.
@@aquamenadventures4382 they said it's their favorite game iron pineapple has ever covered, not that it's their favorite game. even if you didn't misconstrue what they said, though, you're still being a jerk for no reason. go touch grass
En Garde looks legit great. Gives me a 3rd person Dark Messiah of Might and Magic vibe, and that was a blast. Hoping for some suspiciously low hanging chandeliers and ice magic to really get things going :D
Bleak Faith definitely seems like it's supposed to be Shadow of the Collossus meets Dark Souls. A shame it didn't seem to pan out, because that's a legitimately cool idea.
Just remember that one and two man teams can make absolutely phenomenal titles. Hollow Knight and Undertale were done by tiny teams. So I have a lot of hope that it'll be great
@@lifetake3103 Holds true for any project. I've experienced it first hand with mod development and it can be a giant burden, especially when its people who can't implement it themselves. This might not seem like a problem with game development and with small indie teams it almost always isn't because you don't have room/time/money for people who can't contribute to handling the workload, but now imagine a AAA company and a general director/manager who answers directly to completely incompetent board members.
It's funny cuz when Pineapple first started doing videos using his actual voice, he got some flack with some viewers telling him to stop doing that and go back to his old format. So glad this channel is evolving and growing!
I can't even really explain why, but as a guy who grew up in the early 2000s, Bad Boro really spoke to me - I hope the devs continue their great work on it!
En Garde is impressively polished, and I love the Spanish setting. I hate that we have so many video games about so many alternate worlds, but so few of them actually explore real-world locations and cultures. We get a lot of (edit: English-speaking) European-inspired fantasy, Japanese urban settings, and of course the US, but so little of the rest of the world. Assassin's Creed is one of the few AAA series that does it.
30:49 That is one of the worst, best, and most daunting feelings in these kinds of games. When you go into a boss arena, do 1% damage a swing, it slaps you to death in three hits and you're thinking 'Ah, ok, no worries, this is the typical scripted bossfight I'm supposed to lose.' Getting sent back to the checkpoint and realizing no, that's just what you're in for, always hits like a ton of bricks.
Doesn't matter how flimsy the souls-like definition gets, I'm always here cause this man is too entertaining and genuine to miss. Fantastic job as always, man.
I can't stop playing the lies of P demo, I beat it 3 separate times each trying different things. My last playthrough getting your weight below 30% for the light weight class and holy crap your dodges are awesome
Honestly really hyped for En Garde after watching this video. Mechanics look creative and with a rock solid implementation, plus I adore the art direction and style of voice acting. Can't wait to give it a shot.
@@T0XIN21 I gonna be honest, I didn't know this game until u say it lol, but I just watched a playthrough, and I catch your drift, the 2000 era has a very unique
Bleak Faith could improve but I think you're right that it's too far gone in fundamental areas to really be salvaged. However, I think what might be the proper route, especially if they take this as a learning experience and take to heart critiques like yours, is to make their improvements in a new game. I know that's easier said than done, but they are on to something, and for everyone's sake, especially their own, is to start fresh. They really are onto something with a sense of discovery, creature design, user made checkpoints, and scale of world.
One of my favorite series on youtube. The fact that you are actually making a noticeable impact to these developers and bringing attention to great games that only failed in marketing is awesome. And the best part is these games are actually ones I have not heard of, and not just a slightly underrated indie game with thousands of reviews that every youtuber is talking about.
@@kingofsushi4822 honestly I would have demanded a refund at this point. If it's indie game done with no funding I don't have problem with time, but the moment they get a kickstarter, early access or both it's 6 years max to offer a finished product. You get the money founding to be able to hire people and/or drop you job to focus on the game, not as a side spare income while you're working on the game the same way you did before people gave you money. Funding is supposed to save you time not let you waste more of it.
The noise at 23:17 is fucking legendary. Had me in tears. Oh, and congrats on 20 episodes of this series! Always love seeing a new one come out, and even occasionally rewatch them!
I've been a follower of your vids for a long time and I launched the video not having a clue a game i've worked on would be featured ! I've had the pleasure to help out on character art for En Garde! and man, seeing you enjoy destroy the basic soldiers I made made me feel so happy. Glad you liked it ♥ Huge props to Fireplace for making this gem.
Played Strayed Lights recently. They added a harder difficulty, so you get the spectacle and music but the game actually requires learning and skill to beat. Its changes all the movesets to be more complex. A little insane, but still fun.
Bad Boro and Radio the Universe look AWESOME. I hope with new attention the devs will continue their work and finish them. Absolutely incredible stuff.
I’ve been playing the game since early beta was open for game testing the devs are very hands on with trying to tune the game to as much as it can be. All encounters are manageable once you get used to spacing out the enemies
I gotta wonder about Radio though. Like, sure, it appears to be actively developed. But, looking at some communications from the dev in various places, I'm reminded of people who are happy to tinker at something forever but who will never commit to an end. Could be wrong, it's just an impression, but a decade of development, planned and missed release dates, an as yet undetermined release date, a bunch of other stuff that would be too long to list. I get the sense this is a 'the perfect being the enemy of the good' scenario.
@@synka5922 I wouldn't go that far. It seems like the dev was learning as they went. So a lot of time was no doubt dedicated to butting up against the boundaries of their knowledge and figuring out how to overcome them. It's really just the last few years of updates that I saw that made me think this might turn into a forever project. I totally get it too, assuming it is indeed the case. Spending that much time on anything, you'd want it to be perfect. But in my experience, perfect isn't a thing that actually exists. It's a trap that we can hide our insecurities in.
Lies of P turned out to be a masterpiece. Best soulslike outside of fromsoft and even better than some fromsoft games. So hyped for the future of this studio.
I love it when I see gameplay of Lies of P and folks say "Nice, that's the end of the demo, great game so far!" when they see the title card, but they've only hit the halfway mark. Such a packed demo! Super excited for this game!
@@thecompanioncube4211 That implies you didn't play the demo. Give it a whirl, see how you like it and if you still don't enjoy it, I'll respect your opinion. Regardless, I'll still be keeping an eye on it because I deeply enjoyed my time with the game.
The best part of this series to me is that the Deva of the games often come and comment their thanks for your feedback and featuring their games. This has a comment from Lies of P dev! As a nicely polished game, that's seems pretty huge, I saw several of the devs commenting on this video.
Devs of Bleak Faith missed such an opportunity with their long ladders. They should've inserted: "What a thrill.. with darkness and silence through the night"
Something I think you missed with Lies of P is that the damage you take from Blocking is recovered automatically, and hastened by landing blows, ala Rally
This series has turned into one my favorites to watch on RUclips. Thanks for all the entertaining content!👏 Edit: I loved the Lies Of P demo. Once you get the perfect parry down the combat is so satisfying and the in game world is very well realised.
@@GrimmerPl You get a dodge upgrade after the third boss from Gepetto. Plus, you can try to put your equip load below 30% with rapier and move faster, at least according to some people.
There's a unique interaction with the old lady in Lies of P if you use the "Show Off Outfit" emote after putting on the clothes she gave you. It affects your springs.
I think the "effect your springs" thing is just you becoming slightly more human, since before the demo's release the premise was pinnochio can make choices that would either slightly turn you human or robotic
@@BigFunky Listening to music also gives the "your springs are reacting" prompt and after that i got a pop-up saying "listening to music gives you humanity" or something like that. The game outright confirmed it.
what i like is that even if the game is bad you make it enjoyable in a way that isnt degrading. Some things deserve ridicule but its fun and nice to see a more wholesome approach too
Glad to see you enjoyed Lies of P. Was excited before, but after playing the demo and watching you play, I'm convinced it's a great game. Thanks for 20 episodes of this fun as well!
I feel like this might be the best batch in the series so far. Yes not all of these are perfect or even that good for that matter but for the ones that are, they are truly something special.
I love this series. Your style of reviewing and giving feedback is so genuine and kind. You foremost enjoy the game. Even if you don't like it from beginning you keep on trying to see the value of the game. When you find the game fun and enjoyable you praise the good parts but you also give ideas to improve it more. If you find it unenjoyable, you don't just call it a trash and throw it out. You try to find the good parts and give your thoughts on how to improve it. You saying 'it's not for me' is very considerate. I just wanted to thank you for such awesome series. Thank you Ironpineapple!
En Garde and Lies of P are most definitely on my wishlist now. Both of them look great. En Garde especially resonates strongly with me, can't wait for that one!
I had to watch this in parts considering how massive it was, but it was a lot of fun. Thanks for making this series, they're my favorite videos on youtube.
I mean, if Bleak Faith can be that impressive yet imperfect with 3 people... if they can get a handful more to iron out bugs, shrink the levels and make them fun to navigate, make a waypoint or shortcut system that makes sense, tweak the animations, and order pizzas, damn baby, you got a stew. That said, I would never play for longer than an hour right now!
The first two games look absolutely incredible. They’re so completely unique in how they tackle style and gameplay. Gonna be following them both VERY closely! Support for these awesome looking games
BRUUUUH the first game, En Garde, has SO MUCH POTENTIAL! I can't wait for it to be released as a full game! Love the dialogue as well when you shot the grunts with a canon "You're supposed to be a hero?!" lol so meta

Jo, not bashing or anything, but for the love of god I can't fathom why you would play games you don't enjoy? It just doesn't make any sense to me at all.
@@exilenlWell a game can start great and and you put a ton of time into it but then can at some point just not scratch that itch any more but you feel like it you just keep playing it might get back to what it once was and you already feel real invested or you don't want to miss out on the cool new thing in the game( that second one is a marketing tactic companies use to keep players coming back, that works on a lot of people). or even with a case like Destiny people buying the deluxe edition of a new expansion and having all the seasons paid for for the year so they feel they need to get all the value out of it since it's already paid for It's really not a healthy mindset, luckily I've gotten better at just saying "I'm done with this until I hear the core issues have been addressed or I'm just not coming back" in recent years
en garde instantly caught my eye just for having an easily likeable playable character, it just seems really fun, even the animations have character to them. yipee

Started for the funny weirdy beardy souls games, stayed for the genuine love of the genre and really caring critique where it's called for. I really respect your love for game design, and in particular the hallmarks of the souls series and what makes them worth caring about in the first place :>
24:30 this usually happens when the dev did not disable the character completely and it is still reactionary to the environment. The fix is to have a "my player died" event that all enemies and the character understand and lay off or simply destroy it and cut to black instead.
Man you're killing it with this series! You're one of the only creators I will instantly watch as soon as the notification comes through, such a comfort watch. Thank you so much for continuing this series, I've found so many great games through your videos. Can't wait for the next one!
I was skeptical of Bad Boro at first, but I see a lot of influences from games like The World Ends with you and Omori with the design if the dog. The environment effects, while not as flashy as En Garde still seemed impressive, with fun ideas like the syringes hiding in the trash. And the idea of a hostile escort mission is actually genius, what a way to innovate a quest type that has been done to death. I could imagine that kind of mechanic in a pokemon type game, having to subdue and manually carry each monster back to your base to tame it and train it as an active member or your party
bleak faith was one of those games that the souls community was really excited about,it was suppose to have an ever changing world where you were fighting for resources that were non renewable and the world would have events regardless of wether you were playing or not and it looked so good but it slowly changed to something way less ambitious and run of the mill which was a shame because videos of it from 2-3 years ago looked so exciting
People need to learn to temper their expectations when it comes to ambitious games. Sure, they sound fun on paper, but how is your team of 2 people supposed to realize it again?
@@LuisSoto-fw3iftrue but if a project is far beyond their scope, it's also the responsibility of the Devs not to over promise and manage expectations. Never board the hype train but don't blame the consumer

The dodge was fine, I usually just clicked it 2-3 times. I got through even the 3rd boss, which most people said had to be perfect parried, without parrying using dodge. In fact, he only took me maybe 4-5 tries using these techniques.
The demo was great. Stoked for the full release!!

But lots and lots and lots of development, marketing and resources would be needed to make that game shine. Hope you guys keep working on it and just a prototype next time i hear about it ❤
I was interested to learn about Hindu mythology in this game, very cool!

Reminds me of old school Newgrounds in all the right ways.
The comedic timing of En Garde is scary good, I don't know how they timed the cauldron falling on an enemy mechanic but that was amazing
Probably despawn it during explosion and after delay spawn it on top random enemy with falling animation.
@jpc4803 If that's the case then kudos to the team, that's actually a bit harder to pull off

En Garde immediately went in my wishlist. The art style, the setting, and that sweet gameplay. So my jam.
It's like Disney for actual adults lol. Who would've thought it would work so well?

Bleak Faith could improve but I think you're right that it's too far gone in fundamental areas to really be salvaged. However, I think what might be the proper route, especially if they take this as a learning experience and take to heart critiques like yours, is to make their improvements in a new game. I know that's easier said than done, but they are on to something, and for everyone's sake, especially their own, is to start fresh. Bad Boro and Radio the Universe look AWESOME. I hope with new attention the devs will continue their work and finish them. Absolutely incredible stuff.
Seems like w/ BB they do that lazy thing for artificial difficulty by just adding shit tons of enemies.

The fix is to have a "my player died" event that all enemies and the character understand and lay off or simply destroy it and cut to black instead.
that's some good game dev advice
Episode 20! Enjoyed every one of them!
160+ souls-like games, any favorites Pineapple? :D

@NikZedik you ruined the damn chain man
You seem more like a bot to me than the others
They just really needed more man power I think. Its a perfect example of how you can have a team of people great at one thing (Art, environment, theme), but when you force them to also work on things they are not versed in like gameplay, everything falls apart. Hope these guys get picked up by a bigger studio though, their talent shouldnt be wasted
These videos are turning into feature films and I'm loving it
As an original KS backer for 6e6e6e's Radio the Universe I am extremely pleased to see it here and really stoked for its future. There's a lot of potential to be had there! :D
It looks really good
24:30 YOU DIED
dead body gets hit then comes back to live and casually jogs off into a wall
lmao
*Pine:* (starts the video with a nice intro explaining what a souls like is.)
*Pine not even 5 seconds later:* “Alright this might not exactly be a souls like but it’s still cool I promise!”
Bro really just wants to show off cool games and isn’t even looking for souls likes anymore. I love your enthusiastism
your* 🤓
