Joey Badass: Born In The Wrong Era

  • These days, the line between comfort and conformity in hip-hop is indistinguishable. Whereas A Tribe Called Quest, DMX, Onyx and Wu Tang Clan were commended for reconfiguring the commercial landscape in their image, today is defined by a measured and cautious approach. As a result, we’ve reached a point where few hip-hop artists have been able to escape the diluting process that comes from success favoring more lightweight work. With substance reduced to the outskirts, many modern rappers aren’t concerned with the immortality, they’re simply stockpiling as much cash and clout as they can for however long their relevance holds up.
With the exception of maybe Kendrick and Cole, these radicals largely find themselves stranded on the cusp of wider fame by refusing to water down. From Denzel Curry to JPEGMafia, Injury Reserve, Clipping and the Beast Coast crew, they’re all afflicted with an informal ceiling on them where, in previous eras, their unique perspective and originality may have been a selling point.
When it comes to this scenario, no-one is more of a case study for this exasperating fate than Brooklyn’s own Joey Badass.

Big KRIT, probably the most underrated rapper that everyone has heard at least one song from him. You find his music in movie trailers, videogames and TV shows so you'd think dude would be much bigger then he is. Ashton Matthews, Danny Brown, Russ, Dee 1, Tobe Nwige and snow tha product are some other indie rappers that have very unique and distinct sounds

I disagree, he was born in the right era, as he can develop a niche audience. In a over competitive "Golden Era" he would have faded into obscurity as just another talented lyricist......he has the opportunity in this era to really define himself and stand alone as more than that.

I think the main reason on why Joey hasn't become as popular as for example Kendrick or Cole is simply because he hasn't figured out how to combine mainstream appeal with his solid lyricism. If you're looking at his contemporaries, they all had those certain tracks very early on in their carreers which allowed them to elevate to this so called untouchable status. Joey hasn't (yet). Devastated is what comes the closest, but in my opinion fails as it was just one out of many songs back when it was released.

Because of his early work, he kind of suffers the same fate as what happened to Common or a Talib Kweli. They are basically put into a box and if they dare try to leave that box people don’t really fuck with it. Personally I think he came in the wrong era because he would have hugely benefited if he were to have a career during the late 90’s. Now he’s just a niche rapper for people want to reminisce on the 90’s or who just want a modern take of the 90’s. But I just think he should just be grateful of having a hardcore fan base and just continue to satisfy them with music.

Ceremonies in today’s world are few and far between which is why someone of his caliber is under appreciated by those born in a similar time. That's not really as significant as this video makes it seem. When they recorded that video, all Joey had released up that point was 1999 and some singles. Of course they (unfairly) tried to clowned him because at the time Odd Future was at their peak. OF has always been trash and overhyped though, the only one that can hold a candle to Joey is Earl

joey is born in the right era cause what he talks about should be spreaded out and he can rap over trap beats and make it sound good it's just that he can fit in the golden era and this new era of hip hop unlike j cole and denzel for example. Joey is the ONLY artist that sounds like a direct evolution of the 90's era and he could definitely be mainstream in the 90's as well. The problem isn't joey it's the fact that no one likes boom bat style beats or a track that has makes you go back and pay attention

Many mainstream names in rap right now hadn't even made their first song at that point.

no way to really gauge his current success and popularity if his most recent work is 3 years old
    Time will tell.

    It’s as simple as this.
Rappers who have the ability to be a lyrical genius, don’t need big corporations to succeed.
So when these big record labels come to them with these bogus deals where they basically need to “sell their soul”, they can refuse.
However, by refusing these deals, they don’t get the same exposure and promotions that other rappers get.
Whereas rappers like Tekashi 69, who don’t have the same level of word play, will take those deals.
This is why we have so many Lil Pumps, Trippie Redd’s, etc.
    It’s always been this way.
The Lox, Slaughterhouse, Papoose, Fabolous, etc.
So many “Hood rappers” get the “street cred” and respect by true hip hop heads.... but they never truly get that MASSIVE mainstream media push.
It’s all about the deals you choose to sign.
