Learning literary theory and how to critique poetry is this. Deconstructing language to its most finite units, parsing one technique from another and seeing how each word is intentionally working to create the overall. Experience for the reader. Great job vox
In poetry, crossing the bar line is called "enjambment" which might just be my favorite word to date. It was used all the time in Latin poetry, which is surprisingly similar to hip hop.
What's really funny is that a lot of ancient Greek philosophy was set up as poetry with rhyming schemes and consideration for syllables (i.e. flow). Old Greek philosophers were basically the hip-hop artists of their world, standing around the stoa spitting their ideas and theories.
@@jakej2680 A lot of ancient Hindu/vedic philosophy and mythology were also set up as poetry and verses. So they were the first rappers lol. I think Mahabharata is the longest poem in the world.
I don't know what Elzhi did to never get mentioned but when I see one of these or greatest lyricists list, to me it's almost impossible to leave him off. Like someone really has to go out of their way when they are mentioning syllables, rhyme schemes, beats, etc. If he isn't the best, he's one of them.
Kendrick is the definition of a human torch, carrying knowledge from his predecessors. The question now is, who will take up the generational art of bars after him.

+Valerie Kimeli The same people stereotype blacks as talented musically, able to dance well, and smooth talkers. That said, there is nothing especially intelligent going on here. Rakim sometimes seems overshadowed by how popular "gangster rap" became in the 90s. It was all about cursing, being ruthless, etc. But no doubt that he was the evolution of the genre, way ahead of his time. When I was a teen in the early 90s, of course, the foul language and street knowledge stuff were attractive. But when I got into my adult years, I started to really appreciate "real" MCs like Rakim, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, etc. Rarely cursed, rarely crude, all formula.

Biggie Flow has the sexiest grouping of words you will ever read or listen to.. Eminem has a special way of writing as well which makes me consider him one of the best ever.
X_Online Biggie's music is probably the most danceable on this list. Besides lyricism, Eminem displays the greatest range of emotion and rapping style.
***** I think they chose Rakim over Nas cause Rakim made significant progress in the complexity of hip hop. Nas just went little further. Hov just has effortless confidence and charisma.
Criticizing Biggie for being sexist and then praising Eminem is immensely hypocritical. Eminem's entire career has been pepper with racist, sexist, and homophobic slurs/ideas. Biggie definitely used some sexist language, but he also rapped about how he wants to make his mother happy and how he hates himself for being so awful. I'd take Biggie's self-awareness over Eminem's try-hard edginess any day.
Madvillany is the only album I have been regularly listening to since the day I first heard it. The first thing I download on a new phone is DOOM (madvilany) then Death (for the whole world to see)
The way this almost feels natural to me, if you expose yourself to enough music, you’ll be able to feel the similarities and underlying works, and once you know well that everything else can fall into place
....No...It's because white people struggle with rhythm so erratic rappers appeal more. But there are mainstream rappers with an erratic unorthodox flow...Even if the content is trash, like Future and Migos.
***** I don't think you understood the comment. It's not about who you listen to , it's about what you hear when you listen to the artist. With great lyricist, you hear an art , a story or feel the passion of the words. With party type rappers , they are supposed to get you hype and make music for you to dance to. Unfortunately the mainstream is filled with almost exclusively party rappers , so mainstream only listeners get a pretty one side opinion of what hip hop /rap is. turn on a radio or any top hip hop or today station and you hear like 3 different types of flows from about 15 different artist, all rapping about hoes , money , and weed, hell ,do you see how many people think that the best rapper out is drake . Even what you said was evidence of this , yes Joey, Cole, chance and Kendrick are good lyricists , but they are the some of the only actual lyricists to make it into the mainstream but some of them would be destroyed by a lot of independent rappers, and even most of their best stuff is never made it pass the their albums or mixtapes. don't take this as disrespect, this is just the current state of hip-hop.

I like to think of rap as an acronym for “Rhythm Assisted Poetry”.
Thought I should share that, ‘cause lyricism is beautiful. It can tell stories in amazing ways.
I’ve heard a lot of people say “Rythm And Poetry”
Nice
Poems naturally have rhythm.
I'm a music teacher and I'm studying Rap music with my 7th grade students, and I'm definitely going to use that concept. Thank you very much!

Rap definitely is changing. But I appreciate both styles tbh. A lot of new rap sounds good. A lot of older rap sounds good
To me, hiphop is a poetry in the modern era and I love it because of its play on word lyrics and its killing beats. I am so grateful and have a huge respect for the real artists like DOOM who was relentless in the pursuit of mastering a craft.

Hip hop is poetry
@@jakej2680 A lot of ancient Hindu/vedic philosophy and mythology were also set up as poetry and verses. So they were the first rappers lol.
I think Mahabharata is the longest poem in the world.
Depends on the time period. Rhyming wasn't common among Classical poetry.
From what i remember, rhyming is really useful for remember a lot of stories. The vedas and the Quran used something like that
I don't know what Elzhi did to never get mentioned but when I see one of these or greatest lyricists list, to me it's almost impossible to leave him off. Like someone really has to go out of their way when they are mentioning syllables, rhyme schemes, beats, etc. If he isn't the best, he's one of them.

This video was so sick. Thanks for the amazing analysis

+"The Narrator" Cringe
+"The Narrator" LIKE THIS TO TOP COMMENT PLEASE
....No...It's because white people struggle with rhythm so erratic rappers appeal more.
