      The spike in 2007 might also be because that's when kids who grew up hearing the sparse references in rap songs finally got to be rap artists themselves.
      They mention "it's used a lot in freestyle" ... so when people improvise and form lyrics on the fly... going with things you "always" hear in similar songs is a natural thing there.
      and after 2009 it was in the news all the time cause Fox decided to paint Obama as an elitist for asking for that brand of Dijon mustard. Explaining the even larger spike in 2011 and the following years.

    In their most recent album, rap duo Ces Cru dropped an amazing track, the one they promoted most, titled "The Process (Guillotine)."
    In the first verse, one of the lyrics goes:
    "Rollin' up the green, pass it on,
    GREY POUPON"
    Who said this line?
    It was the white member of Ces Cru. His rap name?
    UBIQUITOUS.

    This is not some grand mystery, Vox.

    • @jon99867
      @jon99867 8 лет назад +11

      Sure you could simplify it, but the point of making the video is to explore the current uses for Grey Poupon and how it started. It was seeing the contexts in which the condiment was used, because some rappers used it as a status symbol, whereas others were using it in "tougher" economic situations, and others just as an analogy of sexual acts.

      All music reuses other music to some degree the reason people say "everything sounds the same nowadays" is because you're hearing the most current trends. And plus this wasn't even a whole line it was two words.

    • @ruedelta
      @ruedelta 8 лет назад +6

      That is true of virtually all musical genres. Baroque and Classical era music was fraught with reuse as well. And really back in the day, once you've heard one Gaillarde, you've heard them all, and the only thing that matters in that song is the beat.

      $1.59 compared to $1.00 is nearly 60% more. But not nearly 100% more (double).

    I'm Dutch. Seeing De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig in a video like this really makes me smile. And if anyone is wondering, that's not how the Dutch speak. De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig are known to pronounce things differently.

      Heyyyyy.... guess what? We in N.America don't speak the way our rappers rap either. Guess what? We don't sing to each other either. Singing only happens in songs.

    • @Dylanm94
      @Dylanm94 7 лет назад +3

      Because you don't get my point. De Jeugd is know to pronounce things in a very odd way, some Dutch people might not even recognise some of their lyrics as being Dutch. And also, I was just saying it in case someone was interested in the Dutch language. Wasn't trying to defend the language in any way.

    • @mktulpa

      It's actually named after the two guys (Maurice Grey and Auguste Poupon) who formed the company that first produced Grey Poupon.

      It's just dijon mustard. I'm sure they sell dijon mustard in Britain, but almost no American brands are common in Britain except for Heinz and other brands brought over during and immediately following WWII.

      Charter Jacobson I'm sure at 2:53 that is a British accent, but yeah the younger guy asking later on does sound American.

    Seems logical that artists who used the word in the 90s had it stuck in their head from commercials in their youth (the 80s). then in 2007, artists had it stuck in their head listening to their 90s counterparts while in their teens. So Grey Poupon will be probably be eternally recycled and revamped throughout the upcoming decennia's ;)
