bro got me to watch a msi afterburner tutorial
lmao for real
literally XD
yeah as if i did not know it already lol
I know I already have it and use it, but I’ll still watch the full video
😅 true
The only downside to this video is being reminded that Norton still exists.
i swear they only exist from accidental bundle installs. was using the gigabyte motherboard software to update some drivers, and even after double checking what software it was installing i still somehow ended up with norton installed.
The last time Norton had a good software was when DOS was still the latest MS OS.
I learned the hard way...
Don’t forget mcafee…
I downloaded it as a bundle, please explain
IMHO anything that installs Norton should be classified as malware itself.
Agree. Software that measures performance shouldn't be bundled software that will reduce the results of the measuring software.
Oh wow that is so funny! You are a genius.
I run a small computer shop and I have a pile of Norton codes that I got for free but I refuse to install in on any computers. Hell I wont even sell them, I'm just keeping them prisoner :p

I guess
FYI, the AMD adrenalin overlay has gotten pretty damn good
Nvidia overlays somehow got worse after Nvidia moving to Nvidia App
It maybe because it is still in beta but it is worse in current state.
Microsoft Xbox Gamebar Overlays nowadays is good enough for almost everything anyways.
Until amd overlay can distinguish between a game and anything else afterburner is still top dog.
Not to mention, kind of necessary if you use fluid motion.
@@Touma134I not often I experience that as a problem, and then it's only a matter of ctrl+shift+o and it's gone.
I find it hilarious how MSI made this pretty first page of the installer to smuggle Norton through, and the very next step it reverts to the legacy installer from Windows XP days.
Find it equally funny they added a couple tabs to configure another app, included that app in the installer and then get all of the credit for the overlay that app produces.
It's made by the same guy, so not really stealing credit.
I never downloaded Afterburner from MSI but from Guru3D, where the developer is. Ironically he seemed to get really pissed today looking at the thread for Afterburner development and locked the thread. What a coincidence.
At least they do give you the option of not installing the pup/bloat
2:18 Holy shit, I've been using Afterburner/RTSS for years, and I NEVER knew that was how you figured it out, other than just selecting both and seeing which number was clearly the correct one. I'll be damned, Dawid actually taught me something today!
That sounded really back-handed, but I swear it wasn't.
Oh yes it was
wow thats nuts about adding the HWINFO stuff to afterburner, always learning something
Yeah, I *genuinely* didn't know about that functionality, that's nifty.
If you use hwinfo sensors for osd, just check the "override group name" box while it's highlighted. Then change the group name to whatever your stuff is called(eg. Cpu, ram, fan etc). Then it will list it on the same line as whatever you're monitoring
G'day Dawid,
Yeah Afterburner is the OC Program & RTSS is the OSD Program, I've answered this question in comments many times on many different channels too.
PS Dawid & Anna Have a safe trip, excited to see what you find in South Korea
This video is pretty useful.
I have always to a degree wondered how you have gotten these informations on the OSD.
This guide may be a little longer than others i have seen so far, but definitely one i would recommend for a comprehensive instructive guide :)
I used after burner on all my Nvidia builds and adrenalin on all the AMD ones. Great applications
Thanks for doing a video like this! I like seeing how the pros do their software!
even though many of us know this like the back of our hand, some people have no idea what some of the settings even do, so videos like this are very humbling
I immediately got flashbacks from using the NVidia overlay, because it never worked properly for me and a second later Dawid shows me I'm not alone. Appreciate that man ❤
I've never had much luck getting the actual overclocking features in MSI Afterburner to work, but the overlay is kinda cool.
And the overlay isn't even MSI afterburner, it's Rivatuner Statistics Server, Afterburner just interfaces with it and gets Credit for the overlay it isn't even putting on the screen lol.
You know what? Thank you for showing exactly how to do this with MSI and hwinfo. I’ve been playing with it for quite a long time now and couldn’t figure out how to get every metric that I wanted to see on screen.
I went through old videos to find this answer! I remember the old software and how a viewer recommended this to Dawid.
Glad to see this getting put out there!
Exactly what I’ve asked so many creators about, thanks for answering the question and showing how to use it
One warning for those who plan on using these programs on either Twitch streams or RUclips videos or other monetized video content, you really need to get a commercial licence for these software packages. Linus and other content creators have gotten in trouble for using personal use licences, commercially.
I think it might have a bit more to do with how every single stream he advises people to NOT use the features of the platform that the platform makes money from and instead only use merch messages where LTT makes all the money.
Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted to know.
I just love the 80's After-school Special 'Hero Music' during the video, and the 70's era pR0n-esque jam during the credits.
Fellow canadian here. Love watching your videos. Been watching for a long time. You inspired me to build my dream PC. Took my family camping came home to my house being robbed. Stole mine and .my sons PCs. I rebuilt his.will do mine again one day I hope! Keep up the good work!
Wasn't aware of the native monitoring tools. Thanks for a great informational server. Should do more like this.
This is a fantastic idea for a ongoing video series
Perhaps like a "weekly review of 5 fantastic/must have new/trending software"
I knew the soft but the config was always mysterious. Thank you for showing me how to get it done!
Thanks for this vid I’ve been looking for a proper guide for setting the overlay
Didn't think I'd learn anything on this one but Dawid continues to surprise me
I already figured out how to set it up, but even for me it's nice to know I did it all right, excellent video that has use for everyone.
One thing I'll add is you can backup your Afterburner config (both OSD and overclocking settings) by copying the files in this location to a backup folder:
Program Files (x86) > MSI Afterburner > Profiles
All you gotta do is paste them back after a clean install and everything will be set up.
Thank you so much for this video. I was trying to do this myself and always ran into issues and never got it to work and / or display. But with your video, I was able to get it to work. So again, thank you very much, very helpful step be step process. Love your sarcasm it cracks me up.
Very useful information. Thank you for sharing.
Great video! Ive seen Jay setup Afterburner, but couldn't do it on my system. I think I've got it now. Thanks!
You actually can use -allow_third_party_software in CS2 while playing real matches. Been doing this since the release, don’t know why there’s a myth that you can’t. So monitoring while playing an actual match is absolutely possible.
It's risky
This was very helpful I’m definitely gonna use this today even tho I have no worries about performance- it’s just fun to see the stats. Thanks!
I was basically running a very similar setup. I’m happy there was the trick for the graph version of frame times as I had not looked further.
The only change I made is showing more core for cpu usage, as very single threaded games were showing, say, 20% CPU usage and I wasn’t understanding what my limit was, the. Seeing one core pegged at 100%, and the rest chilling made it a lot clearer. :)
It’s been such a long time since I’ve check for updates on afterburner that I’ve completely forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder Dawid.🤙 MSI Afterburner is a must for any PC gaming rig.
Nvidia rigs, sure. It gets in the way of adrenalin so I have no use for afterburner on my all amd pc.
@@Tomazack Mind explaining how it gets in the way of the Adrenalin app?
nVidia also has the nVidia app , which gives customization to the overlay
you can do quite a bit of customization to the RTSS overlay too but you have to do it through the RTSS app and not Afterburner (which isn't actually doing any of the overlay)
@@bdhale34 I was saying this because of what he said about the nVidia Geforce stuff that it is preset and non-customizable.
Genuinely thought there would be more software haha - great video
Thank you for this video. I have MSI center and Afterburner and had no idea all that was in there. And yes avoid Norton at all costs.
What a throwback, I've used MSIAB years ago to adjust the (annoying) fan curve of my GPU. And HWInfo is quite useful as well since you can set up sensor values to be shown in the systray. I have it set up to always show the current CPU and GPU temperature, quite handy to always have that available at a glance.
Super useful video!! Thank you!! Finally somebody explains the darned thing!!!
Great work Dawid! I knew exactly what this video was gonna be and I watched regardless because your just that good!
Thank you very much for your hard work every time. Answering questions is a good thing too,
What a great video! Definitely was not an intuitive setup for me when I started messing with it
Ah! Ive seen the part of the process I've been missing! Cheers 👍
You can put the memory clock inside "MEM", you just need to set the group to that or whatever you want in the settings. Basically you can make a group for each thing you monitor.
When did you figure out that framerate graphs arent the same as frametime graphs? That drove me crazy in old videos, glad you fixed it!
Quality content, thanks Dawid!
At 8:11 you can check the override group name to show in OSD.
Dawid you can add stuff to RTSS directly from the HWinfo settings, its under the OSD(RTSS) tab in settings, and it shows up at the bottom of the normal overlay instead of weirdly in the middle.
We've come full circle. Linus now does tech stuff, and Dawid gives tech tips.
Clear win for AMD’s Adrenaline over Nvidia. Afterburner is nice so you can use the same overlay for different cards. Awesome video Dawid. Thank you!
I was thankfully able to figure the MSI Afterburner overlay settings out, but having this video would've saved a lot of time lol
thanks that was actually useful
Nice walkthru. Probably the best I've seen and I've only been curious enough to try this a few times. Kudos! Now, please walk me through the perfect poached egg. That would be epic! (PS: Get a haircut ya hippie)
If you are running Windows, and only need to monitor the bare minimum of your computer’s performance, there is a built-in monitor software: if memory serves me correctly, you only need to press Win key + g (simultaneously) to access it
uhh more useless game-bar crap.
@@fragalot it’s not useless; I use it. I don’t want (or need) another monitoring software.
I’m not saying it’s better than the options Dawid showed (it isn’t); I’m just saying: “it’s there”
@@guaiqueritech It's unnecessary and just makes your PC more bloated with useless software. Geforce Experience tries to fill a need that already was satisfied with already existing software.
@@fragalot I’m not talking about GeForce Experience
@@guaiqueritech GFE, GameBar, same difference. Software forced on users that no one asked for.
The music running around 11 minutes I think Global stations used to use that for their sports stuff in the '90s.
I don't know if you know this, but there is also a performance overlay baked into windows with the game bar. I have successfully used it when dealing with a game that doesn't like afterburner
Norton / McAfee: That must be us! Finally!
Dawid: I'm about to end this man's entire career... AGAIN
Awesome thanks for the info Dawid
This is sooo helpful thanks, worked out i was bottlenecked on my memory using this
i was literally thinking how do they put that overlay on when i found your video thank you
Always wonder how to show the frametime and add HWInfo.
Many thanks Dawid
Jesus I stopped watching videos about computers for so long that Dawid has long hair now 😂😂😂😂
Also good to know that if a game's frame cap is bad and unstable, limiting your FPS through Riva Tuner instead can make frametimes better
In RTSS to get a label to show up for the HWInfo stuff, tick override group and fill in the label you want
I watch every video after subscribed and I just install MSI after burner about 10 mins ago and this video pop out. Noice :>
yay new Dawid!
thank you
The software that does the overlay is Riva Tuner Statistics Server which MSI afterburner installs and interfaces with.
ive had the same msi afterburner installer on my pcs for years, havent needed to install/uninstall for ages and didnt know they push norton now lmao. what ever makes them money ig its solid software
That symbol is called hyphen
dash is okay, too.
Technically a hyphen and a dash are different lengths and have different Unicode, however in common parlance they are interchangeable.
Appreciated!
Thanks for the walkthrough!
You can also press Windows + G to bring up the xbox bar that also has FPS stats etc but its basic it only shows fps and component usage , not temps. but it can also be pinned to monitor while playing
Next question: Dawid How can I get the best OEM gaming PC?
that one is easy, you become the oem and you dont put budget restrictions so you dont buy crap parts
Very useful thank you for sharing
I'd highly recommend using every core on a CPU for the overlay, some games just aren't optimised to utilise more than 8 cores or only utilise a few and bottleneck the game as a result, so this is a pretty important metric to check in my experience. Just checking the overall temp and usage doesn't show you a particularly reliable picture for how the CPU is actually being utilised.
You can actually take the OSD tab in MSI Afterburner and scroll down to your RAM Cloc you added via HWINFO and set itto the group you want it to display with or make its own tag by going down to the bottom and finding the "Group" setting and checking that box then naming the group you want it to display as.
The setting for framerate limit in RTSS is pretty useful as well for non-conventional locked FPS options
yes, some games do need that and this is the best method
Yes indeed. I pretty much use it in all my games now as it smooths out any stutters.
@@greyroo it's mostly smoother than the in-game fps locks
It's a very helpful video for gamers to monitor the performance and benchmark their graphics card.
Thanks Dawid, Awesome Tech !
U can download the core component (RTSS) if u only need to monitor the system, pretty straightforward to set up if u only need basic layout like afterburner.
But since adrenalin can monitor frametime i just use the native one.
Also, Intel's overlay option is actually pretty informative as well. The only thing it's missing, hilariously enough, is an FPS counter. However, if you hit Win+G and use the built in gamebar overlay, it will act as a good workaround.
8:12 can't you just rename it's group name and integrate any sensor reading into the already existing Afterburner layout (or a completely custom one of you wanted?)
You do point out a few good tips although not part of the video... always download directly from the developer's site and I always do custom installs so I can choose to NOT install things like Norton or McAfee or other things that may come "packaged" with some programs. Just a good practice to get into. And also make a copy of the installer executable before you run it as some (like Adobe Acrobat) self-delete after you install them, so it's a good idea to make a backup copy of installation files anyway. Same for drivers... either go to the board or peripheral manufacturer's site or the chipset maker's site (AMD, Nvidia or Intel) if you have to to get "generic" drivers from a trusted source.
Brilliant video. Thanks.
This is the first time Dawid has not described free anti-virus as venereal disease.
It is worth mentionong that Afterburner often collides with Adrenalin, and you get wierd GPU behavior or even driver timeouts or blue/blackscreens so it is a good idea to use Adrenalin only if you are a AMD GPU owner. Afterburner is fine with Nvidia.
That was useful, thank you!
I AM SIMPLE MAN. I SEE DAWID, I CLICK DAWID, I WATCH DAWID, I CLICK LIKE FOR DAWID. I AM SIMPLE MAN.
Great video, I hadn't used MSI Afterburner so maybe I'll give it a go. I have also noticed Nividia Geforce game overlay being buggy lately , I thought it was just me.
Dawid try an FX CPU on windows 11 for fun and an ancient GTX 980 ti to see how it holds after 10 years
so you want to see a video where is explained how to make the usb installer that doesnt ask for tpm in rufus and want to see if is a good idea to buy that 980 you saw cheap
@@arch1107 no I have my Rx 6950XT but I spend 7 years with my GTX 980 and I'm curious to see how it holds now that I got rid of it 10 years after the release. I love see youtubers struggling with obsolete tech because is fun content
For hardware like temps, I just monitor them with hardwareinfo. If the maximum is higher than I like, I figure something out.
You don't really need afterburner for that you can just use rtss and hwinfo for the same tasks.
Quick tip Dawid: You can double click the display choices to activate rather than keep clicking show in on-screen display :)
Honestly, the software anyone should install is CapFrameX, Process Lasso and Revo Uninstaller.
Cap Frame does not have the overclocking, but a far more detailed overlay option.
Thanks Dawid!
I can't believe how many people still keep asking about MSI Afterburner. It's like every PC hardware channel talks about this everyday and a lot of people still don't know.
that people are kids, that do not know that it exists, and never forget the second question most of those ask, do i need to have msi hardware to use this?
I don't get why people use Afterburner with RTSS always when there's better options to use with RTSS.
Because there are 1000s of people entering pc gaming for the first time every day!
