Ew, not this guy
I'm convinced that getting screws left over after rebuilding a pc is normal. That's just how screws are made. Take a completed system, disassemble, rebuild, harvest spare screws. Do it a couple of times, and you'll have enough screws to build 20 computers.
Everyone knows that screws are spawned from the ether and not actually manufactured
It just goes to show that you didn't really need all those screws anyway (that's what I tell myself)!!
Omnissaiah be praised, we have another convert
Back in the old days we made screw-origins on desktop-planners. When re-assembling you kinda work backwards. Life has become a lot easier though, we now take smartphone photos and name them in order. I love Dawid, but he has a lot of bad habits. I guess that's why his channel is popular, LOL
At least he didn't try the external GPU with a laptop which it's original purpose if your laptop GPU is broken 😂.
It is always when you call IT or report something not working that it magically gets it's act together. Then the IT person thinks you're an idiot... Beyond frustrating!
We tend to call this the "Admin Aura". The second an IT Admin stept within 3 meter (9,84252 feet for the freedom lovers) of the "faulty" device, it starts working again.
@@chrisblock1619 The amount of times I've been called for a laptop not turning on and then I just turn it on and it works is way too damn high.
been that IT guy plenty of times, some machines just fear our sheer aura or are about to fail whenever you leave the room or close the ticket.
@@lucasco031194It's insane. I used to be the IT guy. I switched careers. Something didn't work no matter what I did. Called it and the admin aura turned on the moment they arrived.
@rambow70 As someone that works in IT let me just say, don't worry about it, we actually don't mind problems that fix themself, quite the opposite really and as someone else mentioned, some of us just seem to strike fear into the IT equipment so often enough simply mentioning our names to the devices will scare them into working again 😂
You like when these things do terrible things to you and we all know it.
Our favorite masochist
Makes for a good thumbnail/title.
E-GPUs are so cool and such a good idea, but they cost more than their desktop counterparts. Can't wait for the used market to get some supply
Look out for the GPD G1 to hit the used market!
Don't they sell cases you can populate with a desktop card? Granted the case is another added cost though...
@@volvo09 I bought one from aliexpress, a thunderbolt 4 gpu enclosure that cost me about 200bucks, I use it with my Legion Go when traveling, Beats my old travel set-up which was a mini pc build w/ a 3060, I mean the mini PC set-up performs waaaay better but the convenience of the legion go w/ dock is much better, I can game on the go and when I am in a hotel or something I can plug in the egpu for more gpu power.
There are external enclosures that will take most standard PCIE cards and are a lot cheaper than the dedicated ones.
@@volvo09 Yes, it's called a SFF compu- ... Okay, sorry. Yes they do, but the allure to this one would be the tiny size it has. Much smaller than the likes of the Razer Core X, and way easier to carry alongside your laptop. You could of course argue that you get small external docking stations too, but then when you add the GPU to that, they're not so small anymore. Plus it's annoying to set up and take apart every time you move, so you don't risk breaking the connector in transit. There is the fact you can't really change the GPU in this too... Not yet at least.
Minisforum will not refund you on the product if it's faulty. They act like they will and cut contact. Im out $500 on an MS-01. Proceed with caution. Only buy through a third party like Amazon if you are getting one.
Replying so you get some visibility, I hate scumbag companies like that.
Never buy anything that RUclipsrs get paid to shill for
Their name legit resembles the word misinformation which makes it 10x funnier lol
Never use a payment Methode without buyer protection (do you can get your money back in case you get screwed )
Wendell keeps promoting them...very sad
This video is why I love this channel. Just seeing dawid struggle endlessly and succeeding at the end with his genius
It’s like putting a vehicle back together and there are bolts left over. If nothing rattles or falls out, it didn’t need them anyway
Aw, I liked your intro. It was catchy, quick, not obnoxious, and an indicator of good times/mayhem to come.
I worked for HP in a previous life. One of my co-workers figured out how to reassemble a LaserJet 4100 with the bare minimum screws and still have it function. That way if he needed to tear it down to get inside to walk a tech through replacing a part he could do it in moments. He had maybe 12 screws total installed in the whole printer.
I remember servicing printers around that series, we had a ton of them in the office. There was one set of gears that I think drove the fuser, they would go bad on heavily used printers and the WHOLE damn printer had to come to pieces to replace them.
I figured out that if I cut away some plastic it saved hours of disassembly and reassembly and you didn't have to take it apart to the bare frame.
The thing truly had to be torn to bits for this repair, I felt like a king when I figured that out. Hahaha
Holy hell, reassembling that Geekom pc looked like a nightmare, Apple levels of crap crammed in a small case
Nah, even MacBooks are nowhere near that bad.
I died when the camera panned over and there was like 25 extra pieces/leftover screws 😂… but yea idk it’s like satan invented a computer build to torture people who work on things themself lmao
Mini PC that uses a laptop cpu plus mini external gpu that uses a laptop gpu. If only they could combine both into a single device and maybe also add a monitor. If only…
Maybe in the future the tech will finally be there
You shouldn't ignore how much better the external ones with proper cooling and full wattage run compared to the poor GPUs that run on 50W in laptops with cooling for 30W. 550 is too expensive for sure, but at a reasonable price, I'd rather have an ultra light laptop plus GPU performance at home
@@biglevian what time are you living in lmao, laptop GPUs can pull 175 watts and have the cooling to maintain that wattage. im speaking from experience here
the problem is the price and the mini display it comes with
nothing in life is perfect i guess, except desktop pcs
I laughed, out loud. 99% of the time a laptop is the right answer, if not desktop. Just hook it to your display / input of choice. That said, there's that 1% use case where a small handful of these mini PCs are a better deal, if you just do not need the laptops display portability. I still push most customers to a desktop / tablet combo with Moonlight / Sunshine.
You filming the video to show it doesn't work causing it to start working reminds me of a client who was struggling with an application that refused to work and said he had restarted the PC, unplugged it, let it sit for a day without power etc. then when we had exhausted all the possible solutions after and hour of trying shit I went "Well, we COULD try restarting it one more time even though you've done so multiple times" and after that it just started working and still works after weeks. I think it's the computer mana at work, the client even went "Well, I guess it needed the right person to tell us to restart it".
No better way to kick off a morning than a Dawid struggle story. I guess us IT folks need to start asking have you tried taking it apart and putting it back together again?
that lovely hex screw looks like a torx to me? 🤔
Noticed that too, but it’s a common error.
Anyone else ever feel like the little mini cooper Dawid always drives in Cyberpunk when he tests is just a metaphor for his life with PC parts?
I just can't understand the logic of mini PC's like this. For the cost of the Mini PC and GPU, you could just build an ITX build if space is an issue. Or for traveling you can just get a laptop and not need to worry about carrying around the screen and GPU as separate items. I genuinely don't know if I'm missing something or a certain use case for them.
Yeah, just buy a used low-end laptop and decent PC for the same price.
I have a full atx build (7800x3d, 7900xtx etc), but I also have a minisforum mini pc with a 780m, paired with a GPD G, which has the same GPU as the dock featured in this video. My ATX build is massive. So far I've mostly leveraged it for VR, but my mini PC is mounted on a SIM rig, which is easy because it's so small and compact. There's a monitor and a PS5 mounted too, so it's all integrated, and I prefer to use the mini pc/egpu combo when I don't need so much power. It's also worth noting that sometimes, when one PC has problems, it can be easier to solve with a second PC around.
I think the primary use case is "Because it's neat". It's just a hobbyist/enthusiast product and have little benefit for most consumers over other options.
Mini PC is for saving space and power, not hooking up giant external devices to. These eGPUs are better suited to light laptops that you hook the eGPU to when you're back home. How many of those have Oculink though.....?
Would have liked to have seen a couple more titles and how they ran. But, you the man on fixing your own purchased problems!!!
I've had the same issue. My GPU decided not to draw power, and none of the LEDs worked.
I took everything off, saw nothing bad happening, reassembled it back, and voilà, everything works now.
I have an old TV i use for my Ps5(the tv is ~15 years old), a few days ago it decided to not turn on at all, i opened it up and saw how dirty it was and how many "shortcuts" were taken during manufacturing(surprised that the TV lasted 15 years with how unsafe the insides looked). But i saw nothing that serious so i just tried to turn it on with the back off, it worked.
I bought a used 1080ti that was sold as defective. It had a 6pin and 8pin power connector on it.. tried it with both and never got it working, so I assumed it was dead.
Months later I played around with it again and tried both cables at the same time... The damn thing worked 😂
I felt like an idiot
10:26
I audibly started to laugh at that part, because I SO expected that, and yet I was thinking maybe like 4-5 screws left. When I saw that I just lost it xD
As a diesel mechanic, when we'd get ready to in-frame a big rig we'd throw a handful of nuts and bolts under the truck so not to worry about leftovers lol.
OneX[?I think?] makes a 7800xt mobile version of this as well as a 7600xt mobile version, but I wanna say those were a lot more expensive [and IIRC has an additional M.2 slot]
(DUDE!!!! You don't take pictures during disassembly?! You made a video on it, you could've gone back and watched it backwards ; )
[Edit 2: You just hit Jedi level repair status. Grats man! ^^]
So the inside of that thing, it almost looks identical to the cooling solution in like the first couple iterations of the PS4 I think it was. They changed it a couple times to reduce cost but that looks identical to like gen 1 PS4 cooling like they just popped out the same cooling block
You just need a GT 210, and you're ready to go
Gt 210 with an oculink port of course
gt210?
what is that? use a gt710 1gb
"Have you unplugged everything and plugged it back in again??" Always the best advice when troubleshooting! I can't say how many times a reseat has fixed a problem.
The amount of spare screws after reassembling the Geekom is terrifying. Well done Dawid
This sort of crap has happened to me so so many times, to the point where I question my abilities to handle the simplest of tasks and my sanity just goes out the window
“This little bastard and beat the a.i. out of Jensen” has me dying 😂 Dawid is the funniest content creator
is it because you need BOTH the oculink and type c at same time? it looks like you were just trying one or the other before the teardown
yes, and my new LG 45" OLED only works with USB-C video when the supplied cable is oriented in the correct way. Connection to the display doesn't matter, can be flipped in both orientations, but connection to source device needs to be one orientation or no signal is achieved.
Silly question... as far as rebuilding the Geekom system you took apart, why not watch your previous video to see how you took it apart (and how it goes back together)...?
Nah, that's way too logical.
Dawid would be betraying his viewers if he did that. The audience expects to see some frustration if not agony.
Thanks for videoing the whole shenanigan - I'm still on the fence where it comes to mini pc and GPU pairing - it doesn't make huge sense financially yet but hopefully in time it will.
Respect.
Also, a niche tech part that's actually well thought-out and with several QOL features that, while expensive for its performance, isn't actually unreasonably priced? What realm have I been whisked off to?
It feels almost bad to say congratulations.
Thanks for the video. I hope we get more content about this GPU.
9:16 'so now... AUGHHH' me too Dawid
It's basically a gpd g1, I've had one for a year it does the job well. The gpd was easy to get up and running, no issues.
Dawid almost makes me miss the days of building custom PC's and driving myself crazy during the process.... not
The writing on all of your videos are just hilarious, this ks the reason I love your channel, "bukakkee all over itself"😂😂😂😂
DAWID GOES SLOWLY INSANE-- MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!
Dawid you are a genius, a genius RUclipsr, you were made do do video's. Your humour is top draw.
I appreciate the conent here and find you computer experience to be pretty good so I was miffed to see how you would try to connect the USB-C port to a thunderbolt connection when the Minisforum website specifically states that this a USB 3.1 port (even other reviewers kmow that this dock is Oculink only)! As for using Oculink, there is a very specific process to the booting process, which you seem to have done when you finally got it to work correctly but it's unclear that you followed the process in your other attempts. First turn on the Oculink device and wait for it to initiate and then boot the PC. I will admit it's a little bit of a pain but it's essentially thunderbolt 5 performance (4xPCI 4) and if you happen to have a Minisforum mini PC, the dock will automatically turn off and on with the PC.
Hello, Dawid. I know you probably won't see this since you get so many comments, but I just really wanted to let you know how much I, and I'm sure many others, appreciate the effort you put in to these videos. Also, your personality is great, and your comedy is gold. "Let's just put a box on it. That'll be fine, right?!" I'm really glad I found your channel, and I look forward to more in the future. Take care, and have a great one!
I know people likely don't care, but I'm genuinely grateful that you removed the intro. It wasn't even bad, I've just been conditioned by 20+ years of consuming media to detest any repetitive intro. Thanks!
I agree. intros just ain't it anymore
so you're not the only one that fast forwards 20 seconds out of habit lol
If he was going to remove the intro the least he could've done was given us a new one where he touches the heat sink.
Nah, I like intros. Get me into the mood.
I need the intro
This does feel like a nice deal for the price, with everything built in like that and caged up, compact. I use a backpack-friendly size rig and only need a better external screen than a 12" XP-Pen tablet to be completely ready for couchsurfing this summer, and with this I could do Monster Hunter Wilds most likely.
the gpu was sadistic to be worked on so hard keep up the good work lekker buddy
I'd say it may just need the USB and Oculink simultaneously tbh. Shame things don't come with a manual 😂
15:12 oh there we go lol
could have been the order he was turning them on , maybe he just needed to turn the video card on before turning on the PC.
This is par for the course for Minisforum products. They're not too far off in terms of reliability compared to the Chinese equivalents they make versions of, mostly because they're essentially the same thing.
"Have you turned it off and on again? Ok, have you taken it apart and put it back together again?"
Dont know what you are filming with, but its extra crispy. Great job!
If only you'd made a video of you diassembling that PC from hell.
I have an eGPU dock (Minisforum DEG1) and I have had a lot of issues getting an external GPU to run on my Minisforum UM780XTX mini-PC via Oculink. It's just such a finicky and temperamental thing. With a 5700 XT in the eGPU dock it works every time, but with a 6700 XT in the same dock I have not been able to get a signal. Not once. Not a single time. DDU wipes and trying different HDMI ports, different DP ports, different PSUs, fresh Windows installs, all sorts of different BIOS settings, different cables and so on. The 6700 XT never works, the 5700 XT always works. Both cards are confirmed working in other systems. I love the idea of eGPUs, but right now it's a huge mess. I guess that's just what you get for being an early adopter.
Im super excited that we finally have these! Now my kid and my old gaming laptops should last a few more years if I purchase one!
Yay new video, hey Dawid, can you go over the new RTX 5070 Ti mobile chip? Apparently it’s surprisingly cheap.

THE THIRD BEST TECHNICIAN THAT'S EVER LIVED
Hi Dawid! Great video as usual. May i know what watch you are wearing?
This is a pretty cool idea, in that you can use this instead of a power brick for a laptop.
The laptops that use usb-power would 100% use the thunderbolt connection
Guy spends presumably over 500 bucks in his attempts to fix an egpu through buying a brand new mini pc with oculink
Guy after disassembling and reassembling the egpu: "I'm a god damn genius"
Now we need a Part 2! Go back and try it again on all the first tries! 🤷♂
I miss the videos about screws, this content is too good.
always enjoy your witty banter.
I wonder if it could have been removing the power cable? Maybe it was in some sort of limbo state and that managed to get it reset? I have always liked the idea of the external GPU. I have a Razer one I used years ago. It was pretty stable, but I also don't play many demanding games. Regardless, great video!
So now that we have a first and second time you actually fix things, we still want a video of you actually able to use it.
Your channel is like a joyful journey into the world of fun and entertainment. Keep making us happy with your funny videos!🚜🌒⚓️
13:58 Thats there to filter out electrical noise from the power supply.
Oculink is a video connection and little else. In most cases you will need a USB of some kind for the host to control the EGPU.
"Have you tried disassembling and reassembling it?" new IT Crowd automatic phone recording
Dawid wrestling with tech is like a comfort blanket
Excellent presentation style. I am one of your followers. Do you have some old devices pc
that you do not need?
7:00 this is where iFixit comes in to play. I can almost guarantee they have a teardown for that case / rig lol.
10:45 "it's just gonna bukkake liquid all over itself" 😭
one thing to note, the egpu has to be on before the pc. then turn on the pc. if the pc is unplugged, then ya have to unplug the egpu and plug it back in >.>
I also suspect the USB-C port also need to plug in for the dock to work since it has all those other ports out the back of the dock.
Don't you have video footage of you stripping that PC down ?? ...
Dawid doesn't have time for such things. I think he might be a masochist 😂
11:19 Dawid E. Coyote, Super Genius
If only there were a video of tearing apart the mini PC that he could reference to put it back together... ;)
That egpu has a nice form factor and the integrated psu is nice, but that's too much to pay and minisforum has a screwy oculink implementation that doesn't like those m.2 adapters. I've tried those with two deg1 docks and they're just never recognized... and of course when I wanted to return the first one, they demanded I send them a video. Such a pain.
I’m shocked that taking it apart was your last option not your first.
Bros so angry with the EGPU that he didn't give us FPS numbers besides cyberpunk
Worth mentioning as its a common mistake. Your USB cord has to be USB4. If you hook up a USB3.2 or lower, which all these look the same, it wont work.
0:47 Just a point: torx screws, not hex.
lol I thought the exact thing too
thought he was going to pull out a macbook when he pulled the rage quit pc
Mite be a good idea to document a teardown of a complicated thing like that. 😁
Can't even tell Torx and Hex apart! Orientation day indeed
If only Dawid had a video of disassembly of G1 from 6 months ago... ohhh wait!
This video should be tittled:
Guy with incompatible hardware tries to make it work.
that not an inductor, thats a ferrite ring, used to remove electrical switching noise
Yeah definitely just a bad connection somewhere. Funny enough I think a small amount of percussive maintenance would’ve fixed it too
thats's ok i've had a few screws extra too !
Somehow every time I email support for something I instantly figure out the problem as soon as I hit send, or it magically fixes itself.
Ive watched 2 mins into the video so far, and i feel like i ahould comment and say, you havent done any coverage on hand held gaming ? This would be an awsome channel to explain that, pros and cons. Especially as you have this piece of hardware now.
It may be worth mentioning that youll likely never see a higher end gpu inside an egpu, and the reason for that is today limitations of usb c or oculink, not being able to provide enough bandwidth for anything more powerful that whats inside this egpu... 😊
Taking it apart and putting it back together, while finding no obvious fault, is just the advanced version of turning it off then back on again... ;)
Ahh yea, that feeling when you finish an assembly and still have a handful of screws left. "Fuck it, it will be just fine!"
Perhaps you are required to have current draw on the USB-C port so it only powers on the GPU when the attached computer is running. Not a good idea, but possible.
doood, i need some GTAV and Battlefield 5 benchmarks! You left us hangin.
I wish I got one of these. I swapped a mini PC for a desktop with a 4060 which has all the same ports apart from the fancy one lol
This all went about as well as i would have expected. Thanks for punishing yourself so we dont have to suffer this insanity directly.
not sure on that specific one but most docks either work w/ thunderbolt or oculink
I genuinely enjoy this man’s pronunciations and tone of speech, I wish I spoke cool.
And what percentage of your annoyance is not due to the actual gpu but your setup.
5:02 *foreboding*
Definitely one of your more entertaining videos EVER!
