  • In 1529, Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli gathered in Marburg, Germany to resolve their differences on the Lord's Supper. It didn't work.
Here is a 100% completely accurate transcript of that meeting, known as the Marburg Colloquy.

That's awesome to hear! I was raised pentecostal/nondenominational, but about a year and a half ago I started looking into the early church and seeing what they believed and understood scripture, and in my research it became evident that the Lutheran Church holds closest to that. Currently going through catechesis at my local LCMS parish and by God's grace will be confirmed soon.

That is why everything that Lutherans believe is based off scripture. • @angiebee2225

I was raised Baptist and recall a few times when the pastor actually said, "This represents My body." Teaching that it's symbolic is one thing, but it never sat right that the actual words of Christ were changed. When I recently started looking more into LCMS, this is one topic that is different from what I was taught to believe, but wasn't actually hard to accept. If Christ can be in our midst when two or three gather in His name, why can't He also be present in the bread and wine? He is God, after all...
Editing to add that Horus cracked me up. Lutheran Satire is pure gold.

The reason I never held that Jesus was being litteral is that God has a reason for all his miracles. And for the bread and wine to be the body and blood of christ would constitute a miracle at every eucharist. Now, not that he cant do that, but if he is then what is the reason behind it. It isnt necessary for salvation as we are told salvation comes through faith alone, so what would be the point of this miraculous event. Thats the part I have yet to understand. Jesus CAN be the bread and wine, but why would he?

“We believe that Christ is truly present in the Supper. We in no way believe that it is the Lord's Supper unless Christ is present. We assert not that the body of Christ is carnally and rudely chewed, as those men allege; but we believe that the true body of Christ is eaten in the Lord's Supper sacramentally (that is, when the symbol of the bread is received) and spiritually (that is, not by teeth and mouth, nor in any natural manner, but by faith and the power of the Holy Spirit) with a faithful and holy mind."

"We believe that Christ is truly present in the Lord’s Supper; yea, we believe that there is no communion without the presence of Christ. This is the proof: 'Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them' (Matt. 18:20). How much more is he present where the whole congregation is assembled to his honor! But that his body is literally eaten is far from the truth and the nature of faith. It is contrary to the truth, because he himself says: 'I am no more in the world' (John 17:11), and 'The flesh profiteth nothing' (John 6:63), that is to eat, as the Jews then believed and the Papists still believe. It is contrary to the nature of faith (I mean the holy and true faith), because faith embraces love, fear of God, and reverence, which abhor such carnal and gross eating, as much as any one would shrink from eating his beloved son.… We believe that the true body of Christ is eaten in the communion in a sacramental and spiritual manner by the religious, believing, and pious heart (as also St. Chrysostom taught). And this is in brief the substance of what we maintain in this controversy, and what not we, but the truth itself teaches."
      Zwingli

    • @AdamRTNewman
      @AdamRTNewman Год назад +3

@@basketbasket1225I’m curious about the way in which Zwingli is applying “The flesh profiteth nothing”. Some people say that this even means that Christ’s flesh profits nothing, and that when Christ spoke of eating His flesh, He wasn’t actually referring to His flesh. But I wonder whether Zwingli’s stance is more like that Christ’s flesh would profit nothing if received through a carnal means like through the mouth.
Another interesting thing is that the view often attributed to Zwingli’s name is that the Lord’s Supper is *purely* a symbol/memorial. But from what I’ve been hearing (and I guess from what these quotes demonstrate), such was not his view.

The Last supper was a traditional passover supper. The wine stood for the lambs blood used over the doorways so that death would pass over on the night that God sent His reponse to the Pharoah over his refusal and threats made to the Israelites over letting God's people go. The bread was to represent the manna sent from heaven to feed the Israelites in the desert after they were set free. For Christ to change the traditional symbolism of these parts of the meal was quite astounding. Meaning this is my blood, the lamb's blood, and this is my body, the manna. It was symbolic and is still used as symbolic during traditional Jewish Passover Saters (sp?).
To do this in remembrance of me is to do this symbolically of the blood he shed to cover our sins so that death would pass over and that He is the bread of life. To be taken prayerfully and with great gratitude for the sacrifice He made.

One of my religion professors (at an ELCA college) tried to explain Catholic vs. Luther's vs. Zwingli's beliefs on Communion, and it was extremely confusing. It was still confusing when I converted to Catholicism!

I'm a bit new to the communion debate, so I apologize if this has been discussed already
But what about when Jesus says that He is the Vine or the Door? Did He mean that literally as well?
Also, how could Jesus BE the bread and the wine if He was present with the disciples? His body had not yet been broken, and His blood had not yet been shed. I'm guessing the answer to the second part is that He is speaking of the communion to come in the future

When we read the bible we let the book speak for itself and let clear passages help speak for unclear ones and rely on context of the chapter/other verses around it.
When Jesus is a gate is he speaking his physical appearance or what he does for us? When Christ call us sheep are we still human?
Three gospels and St. Paul make it clear. It's not vague.

Jesus said, I am *the true* vine. _John 15:1_ And he proved it by turning water into wine. This means that the garden variety grapevine is "passing away." 1 Cor 7:31. Mere allegories don't destroy their own figures. Instead the garden plant is the allegory (type) and Jesus is the reality (antitype). This is clearly not the same as if he had said, "The kingdom of God is *like* a vine" or even “I am *like* a vine.” It’s truer to say, “Are you impressed with green gardens and new sweet wine? That’s nothing at all. I’m the true vine.”
_John 10:7 So Jesus said _*_again, “Amen, Amen,_*_ I tell you: I am _*_the_*_ door for the sheep._ Jesus literally is the door. There is no other entrance to the Kingdom of God. That's what the *Amen, Amen* is for.
Moreover, ancient Near Eastern sheep pens often had a mere opening in the wall for a doorway. A shepherd would sleep in the doorway, keeping the sheep in and animals out, so he literally was the door of the sheep.
In these two parables, Christ directs our attention *away from* the elements and *toward* himself, emphatically claiming their reality for himself. i.e. *I am* the true vine. Amen, Amen, *I am* the door. Forget those and look to me.
When he says, "Take and eat. *This is* my body," he directs us straight *to* the element 🍞 and tells us what its reality is. God speaks and it happens.
