Scooter 911: Electric Start Doesn't Work (troubleshooting your starter, starter relay, and circuit)

  • Video Highlights:
1:00 - How your electric start system works
2:11 - Check your battery first
2:34 - Do you really have an electric start problem?
    3:43 - Using a test light
4:12 - Locating and identifying the starter relay
4:55 - How to test the starter relay (is the starter motor bad?)
5:48 - Testing the brake switch to starter relay connection
6:27 - Testing the start button to starter relay connection
7:34 - Testing the starter motor manually (by bypassing the starter relay)
What do you do if your scooter's electric start doesn't work? In this video I take you step by step through troubleshooting your electric start components including: the battery, starter relay, starter motor and wiring, brake light switch and starter switch (starter button).
The best tool for troubleshooting the starter system is a test light. Test lights are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased almost anywhere. If you don't have access to a test light you can use a multimeter or even a few wires and a 12v light bulb.
Here is a test light available on amazon that is very suited for home use: amzn.to/2zp2ShU
Here is a link to an affordable starter relay available on amazon: amzn.to/2LhvkJD
The scooter used in this video is a Kymco People 150 but almost every scooter equipped with electric start uses an identical system. That means you can use this video to troubleshoot scooters motorcycles and mopeds made by Honda, Yamaha, Genuine, SYM, Wolf, Rokketa, Italica, Lance and other GY6 brands.
The two common scooters that don't use the starting system shown in this video are the Honda Ruckus and the Honda Metropolitan, but the Honda PCX 125 and PCX 150 also use a different starting system.
If you have a suggestion, or an idea for another episode of scooter 911 leave it in the comment section!

Garret, my scooter had been sitting for five months, because the electric start didn't work and I couldn't get it going by kick starting it. This vid was EXTREMELY helpful, as I bypassed the starter relay and was pleased to hear it crank!! I had to spray some starter fluid in there and it was up and running. I later realized that I had to use the back brake lever to complete the circuit, to start it normally, as the front brake switch appears to not be working.

When my reliable Honda SH300i failed to start after sitting idle during Lockdown. I looked on RUclips and found 911 scooter and this video. The starter sounded semi-normal but the engine wasn't turning over. I tried bypassing the relay on my scooter as suggested and the engine turned over. So I bought a new relay on-line and installed it in a few minutes. The starter was now turning strongly enough to get the motor turned over so that fuel was injected and the scooter is now running perfectly. I was sol-annoyed but now I am relay happy
and very grateful for your excellent videos. I will never be Seesing to recommend them to other scooter riders. Thanks it saved me a lot of money.

Fantastic! Just discovered your channel to troubleshoot my 2007 Kymco People 150 start issue. When it has been sitting for awhile (few weeks) I push the starter button and there is a 2-4 sec delay before it attempts to turn the motor. Once the motor turns, it will take a bit to start but eventually will. When I've been riding the scoot regularly, there is no delay and the motor turns immediately when I hit the starter button. Note: the battery is fairly new; when it has been sitting I put the trickle charger on to make sure it has a full charge but delay is the same. Yes - brake lever pulled, key in On, etc. Appreciate comments. Thanks!

Many newer scooters (including the Chinese ones) have a kickstand safety switch. As in scooter won't start with the kickstand down. Also worth checking . Otherwise, this video is an excellent troubleshooting tutorial, Including a great explanation of how a relay actually works. Electromagnetic coil mechanically closes contacts.

I really like how your descriptions were clear and easy for beginners like me! Plus I love your humor.! But I am still lost! I started taking panels off like crazy (just like you said not to) But I really want to see just how everything works. When I try to start it sounds like something is spinning and not catching (manual start doesn't work). I tested the Battery, The Relay so I am guessing its the starter. Is spinning sound typical from a faulty starter ( FYI - Just put in a fresh spark plug and it was crusty!)

Well I'm assuming you're working on a 50cc Chinese scooter then. The two most common issues I've seen that result in that noise are a faulty starter motor, and sometimes a jam in the starter Bendix. You can pull the belt cover off and watch the starter gear "shoot out" and engage the teeth on the variator. If there is a jam the gear won't come far enough out to engage

It's an 05 PGO mybubu, 125cc and it's not really making any cranking sound at all? When I try the kick start I can hear it try to turn the motor over a tiny bit but otherwise, nothin. I know it worked very recently, as I just bought it and the seller rode it up for about 20 miles w no issues on the kick start, and he kick started it in front of me before I bought it too, so I'm thinkin I must be doing /something/ wrong!

That's the sound! 3:42 what is my problem?

    • @Scooter_911
      @Scooter_911  5 лет назад +2

Well it could be a number of things, but one thing is for sure, your electric starting system is working properly. Most often it is a fuel delivery problem. Either the carburetor is plugged with old fuel from sitting around too long, or possibly the petcock isn't operating correctly. It might even be out of fuel! It is also possible that the engine is not getting spark due to a bad sparkplug, coil, or CDI. Unfortunately you're going to have to dig deeper to find out.

My battery is brand new, bought it also today. Tought the problem may be gastank being empty. Got the gas tank full. Still the same problem. What could be the issue?

I would think the headlight issue is unrelated but most likely a bad switch or a damaged wire somewhere in the harness
