Bro. 8 year old video saved my 2019 scooter with only 458 miles on it… hard time starting. I changed spark plug, cleaned carb, changed fuel filter and fuel. New battery. I was about to give up and saw the video. Paid $8 for CDI box and she started up… wow. Thank you
thank you for making this video. I went to a scooter repair shop and the assholes tried to make me pay 300$ for a gas tank that I didn't need. They said my gas tank was rusted. My scooter was doing the same thing yours is doing. I bought a CDI box and put it on just like you showed here and my scooter fired up. Thank you for your video and explanation of the Chinese scooter startup problem with regard to the spark plug and CDI box. I like the way you offer that kind of a clear and simple explanation of an issue without complicating matters. I have seen many videos about the CDI box replacement, but this is the first time to see someone provide a clear photo where it is located, how its parts (hooks ups) looks like, and how it can be replaced without any complication. I wish that you could also explain for us how to replace the ignition coil and carburetor on a Chinese scooter as well as the other issues that cause problems for many of us such as how to set up the gas and fuel lines and eliminate many of the vacuum hoses that cause unnecessary leaks.
I have a 49cc Santini San Remo with a GY6 engine block, and by the look of things it's very similar to your block.
The carb and ignition coil look identical.
I took all the panels off, the seat, everything and for the life of me I couldn't find the damned sparkplug anywhere!!
Not one picture on the net was able to show the location of the thing. Thanks to your video I think I can find it now.
I know where the CDI is, and thank goodness that's easy to replace if I need to.
In the 80's I used to have all kinds of mopeds (Honda, Peugeot, Yamaha and Puch) and never had a problem with them.
But this silly little scooter is nothing but trouble!
That was easy! Sometimes it can also be the stator/ pickup assambly or the ignition coil. Before changing them you should check all connections by unplugging and reconnecting them.
first vid i have seen that shows were that fuel adjustment is located , iam not familiar with Chinese bikes but this saved me a ton of work on a family members tao tao 50cc

I'm having same trouble put new carburetor cdi box coil &it idle fine till u get out on the road then it instantly dies
Leave it idle to build temperature about 20 minutes and get the fuel and oil moving, maybe rev it while it's on its center stand.
If you find another scooter with a carb problem post it I want to see the whole process. Good video!

You might mention your 5/8" socket for the plug = a spark plug socket. I was using a regular socket, to no avail, when it occurred to me....a week later, maybe I need a specialized socket. I did. It worked.

Hi, good vid. I got 4 of the Baotian version. All of the chinese engines are actually old honda replica engines. So the engine it selfe is good mechanichly. The other stuff is so and so tho. I fugured out that the Cdi`s are slmost open for moist. If you dry it out it will normally work again. So the trick is to keep it dry:-). Use a ballone or plastic bag. Also the wiring for the votage regulator is badly isolated. Normally located behind the front shield. Again thnx for good vid:-)
My Baotian struggles to start and wont idle at first. Once running for a bit it idles ok but if turned off it struggles to start again. Changed spark plug,Ht lead, auto choke, air filter, fuel filter and still same. Am i right in thinking i need to change CDI aswell? Anyone elses sorted after changing cdi? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for doing this video it helped me alot, this morning I went out to start my 50cc scooter it did not start my battery ended up dieing out right now I have it on the charger ! Two days ago I did change out my fuel filter and fuel line also had changed out spark plug after doing this two days ago I wanted to see if my scooter would start after cranking it over some times it fired up so I cleaned up everything thought I was all set for my ride today to my medical appointment dang scooter did not start after watching this video I will go out to check on the things you recommended on this here video I'll give another update soon after I complete these steps ok !👌

@@ryanquinn2974 it's mostly always the 50cc scooter. But get 2 high performance CDI box's. They'll be orange. I would change the coil/plug wire and plug too. Make sure they're high performance. The black CDI is stock and limited.

Kasey - I own a Baolima that I am sure has the same issue. However, when turning it over yesterday to try to get it started, I let the starter run for about 60 seconds. Now I don't get anything when I depress the started button. It won't turn over at all. I checked the fuse on top of the battery and it is good. changed it anyway to make sure. Still nothing. It starts fine when you kick start it. So I am left wondering if I did something to the starter? Or what else could have happened. I am trying to get back to the point where it at least cranks. Then I'll check the CDI box and spark on the plug.

Also you got to cut the ears so you can move the pulsar up and down and set it to 15,000 between the flywheel and the little pickup poster for spark
What should i do if i'm not getting gas on my finger? Fuel/vac lines are clear. I think i need to either replace the carb or clean it out. Do you know of a good tutorial for taking the carb apart? I tried spraying carb cleaner into the holes but it still didn't help.
disconnect the fuel line from the carb, and crank it over...fuel should only come out when the starter is turning the engine over or running the engine.
+James Turner also check to make sure your intake is tight or not cracked
Nice video. Well explained. I have a 150cc that makes like a weird noise when I crank it, almost like a grinding noise but it starts right up and runs great. any idea on that noise when cranking? thanks.
I got Spark, it started at first but after running for a couple of minutes it slowly faded and stop.
I see gas coming out of the 90 degres hose hooked on the side of the carburetor but not from the port hole?

I have the same exact same scooter. I can get it started ( after changing the spark plug, cleaning the filter) , but it will not stay on and idle. If I crank the throttle 4 times, then hit start, it starts but does not idle. Yup thoughts?
They also calm six pen it's got pens and also a common problem is the spark pickup igniter or pulsar they get all kind of names
I was riding down the road & for some reason I drop power. I was able to kick start it & it went another 1/4 mile & it died again. When I opened it up I tried starting it again but I got this "Clanking noise" then it would just hum. Now it only Clanks like twice & nothing. I adj the Valves so that's not it. It getting gas threw the filter but don't know if it's the starter or the Carb. As I'm thinking about it, I don't think the break light comes on either. What do you think is wrong?
I would say no. If you have spark but it doesn't start the very first thing I would be checking next is your fuel. Try pouring some gas in the carb or spray some ether/starting fluid in the carb and see if it will fire over that way.
Kasey Young Where would I put the starting fluid or gas? I bought a new CDI box and a new spark plug and changed the gear oil plus put other oil in and it still won't start. This morning I tried starting it and it did for a few seconds then quit on me. In the air filter or the filter on the side, seems to be maybe gas? in it. I'm not sure what the stuff is. Any ideas on what to do? Maybe a gas filter like a little thing that looks like a bobber? But I haven't checked if I have one of those yet.
***** has it started again since? Or not at all. One thing you could try is pour a little gas down the spark plug hole. That way you will know if it is starving for fuel. But yes in the air filter will work just fine for spraying the ether in.
Kasey Young Another thing you may need is a new Repay Coil.

Hi thanks for that. I have several Fosti scooters all hard to start,if they start at all, changed Cti ,carbs, plugs, even stripped one down put new rings and re seat valves. Spent days on them, have a top bike mechanic give up. They are new 2013, been sitting awhile, changed fuel, one did 120kms before packing up. Would appreciate any ideas Rod
Where does this hose om the cylinderhead goes to? Do I have to plug that in somewhere? I can't find anything about it
What tool and size of that you use to tighten the spark plug
Check the timing and make sure the the valves are set properly... once I did that on mine... started right back up and ran 5 miles per hour faster..

Thank you! Great video ~ I bought a Bashan scooter from my nephew who left it sit outside in the weather over a Wisconsin winter. It starts but won't stay running when I accelerate. Chokes out. Can this also be the culprit for my situation as well? Should I check the carb (if it even has one ~ lol)
Yeah, that's a carb issue if I am reading you right. There are some great carb cleaning videos here on RUclips... or if you're not confident in doing that, replacing a carburetor is SUPER easy and VERY cheap on Amazon or eBay.

Mine will somewhat start then die if I take hand off throttle but have a hard time starting it tried replacing spark plug it somewhat helped but not by much I will look into the crime box thing but how to tell if it’s bad

How did you know it was the cdi box? How do you test the cdi box. Cause I went through my whole electric start system. And everything good to go.

Great Video Kasey. (I've worked on GY6 50 & 150 scooters (EVO 150 is my current one/see my pic) for over 10 years and I have found that about 90% of Starting problems are the CDI boxes (even aftermarket ones die).
But I have a friends 2016 Taotao 50 that I've worked on a couple of times, but now it won't start. It's got spark, tanks got fuel, filter is clean, no lines are pinched, but it's not getting fuel.
Whats your thought ? the vacuum/petcock diaphragm is bad so no fuel is getting to carb ? or do think it might be a clogged jet in the float bowl ? or maybe a float that is stuck shut ?
NOTE: the plug was dry...even a little orange rusty, but I wired brush cleaned it and it still sparks ( I did replaced it though).
my next step was to take the air box off and spray some starting fluid in the carb and see if it will fire...which if it does, would tell me it's definitely a fuel flow problem.
My next step would be to pop the vacuum line off and the fuel line to the carb from the vacuum/petock and suck on the vacuum line to see if the diaphragm is working and letting fuel flow.
After that the only thing I can think to do is to pull the carb and clean it...which is a hassle, but I've done it before (on the Jonway Fone 150cc I used to have) so its doable, just a pain.
I would appreciate your thoughts.

So I jus bought a racing cdi box and mine sounds exactly like yours. So if I change the cdi box will it crank? Oan I bought a new ignition coil as well.

My burgman 400 2004 was starting later when I tried it wouldn't. Brought the bike from a friend n it had been sitting for 3yrs... Put fresh gas in but didn't change spark plug... Would that b an issue it won't turn over (start)
I just got a peace scooter i put to much gas in it smh. It wouldnt start took ot to the shop warrenty still good and they said it was fixed. Got bout 5 miles fown the road and it happened again what u think could be wrong. The mechanic said i was not bad. He was confident it was fixed. What do you think could be wrong. Changed the spark plug it still had the china plug in it. Any ideas would help ease my mind.
Your a GOOD mechanic.....After being around engines for years can I also say that that engine sounds better than most ?
Is this the same as a Honda or is it a better motor in a cheaper scooter ?

My moped starts sometimes then sometimes it wont start at all or I have to hold the throttle down to keep it running could I have a bad cdi box
no spark means bad cdi usually is what videos say but no , sidestand has a kill switch for electricity , dont use sidestand when testing spark in plug.
Loftur Hjalmarsson Side stand legs kill switch doesn't allow you to even try and test for spark.
many scooters it only acts as a kill switch for the CDI and the side stand switches fail all the time, the sidestand is worthless anyway, use the center stand and get rid of it
