  • Revival's Lead Mechanic Alec walks us through the quick process of testing your motorcycle's starter solenoid in a few easy steps with some basic skills and a little bit of know-how.
Sometimes your bike won't start, and you're left wondering what's going on. Maybe you hear a click, or the bike is cranking to no avail; either way, you know somethings off, and the starter solenoid could be the culprit. Luckily there aren't many components to the starter circuit, so this is an easy start once you know the basics. Although this process isn't exactly the same for every bike out there, we've learned over the years that the most challenging part is usually finding the starter solenoid; after that, it's a straightforward process anyone can do!

As a follow up to my previous posts, I was finally able to finger it out. I had seen another YT post by a fellow named Yamaha Bruin Starter. After watching it a couple of times, it finally clicked. Rather than try to explain, watch the video-I had the same issue. After purchasing a new selenoid from ebay, I now have POWER! YAY!

I have to chock it for it to start. however the first time starts right up. then if I have to turn it off or the bike is not in a flat even surface It will not start even if if at running temperature. just with the chock. I am thinking it maybe the carb that needs some cleaning

When I replaced the starter solenoid on my 03 Yamaha XVS 1100, I was tightening the bolt for the positive cable and accidentally touched the frame with my wrench, there was a big spark. Since I’m getting NO power even to the main fuse, (fuse goo) could I have short red it out? A real head scratcher. Thanks

Great video, am having the following problem though key on full charge on battery press starter button nothing no crank or anything. Test light in back of pigtail wire while plugged in which there are 2 one yellow and red other blue no power nothing pressing button or otherwise. Unplug the pig tail wires test light on the red and yellow wire power now present pressing the starter button light dims and almost goes out on test light. Plug the wires back in no power again, bridging the solenoid with a screwdriver turns the bike over so the solenoid and starter motor are good yes?? Scratching my head on this one, what's the problem here is the relay still bad or is something going on with the starter switch?

I know this video is old now. But… on my crf450x when you hit the start switch you hear the points making contact. No blown fuse. Power going into the relay. So I tried probing the starter directly putting 12volts to the power terminal on the starter and grounding it to the body. And nothing happened. I presume this means the starter is well and truly dead. Thoughts on this???

Sometimes my bike doesn't start when warm. If I wait overnight it'll start fine. Battery level is always good around 13.05V
But if I connect a portable starter pack to it... it usually starts... or if I jump start it.
Could that be a faulty solenoid?
Why does the extra ooomp of the portable 12V starter battery get it going ???

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  2 года назад

If your bike cranks (turns over) like normal when trying to start it then your starter/starter solenoid are working as they should and it could be a completely different problem altogether. If your bike doesn't crank (turn over) at all when you press the start button or cranks slowly then yes, it could be many things, including anything from a dying battery to a bad solenoid to a starter to loose cables. Check the battery voltage drop when cranking and if it's great then check all of your battery cable connections and your solenoid. If the battery tests bad then you will need to figure out why it went bad... the fun never ends...

    • @RevivalCycles

It will not. Once the solenoid supplies voltage to the starter it's job is done It will not/cannot kill your engine after that.

I am legit in that situation right now.
Went to the shop on my motorcycle to buy some food. Went back to the parking lot, she tried to start the engine briefly. And then failed. Then the next starter button press, no response. All lights and dash were on. The darkest "Oh no" for me at the time.
But no more clicking, no more whirring sound of the starter no crank up. Just dead in the water. In this case in the parking lot.
Tested to put the bike on gear and pushing it, no issues and she does try to start with bump start. So I went to tinker, got a new battery, still no bueno. Check all the fuses even swapping the built in spare's to the existing fuse, all good. Stand kill switch good, handle bar kill switch etc. no bueno.
Now waiting for a solenoid to arrive tomorrow and replace and test. As my bike got an odd looking solenoid, like a tiny metal box (Yamaha MT line). With 4 pins which connects to a connector, there is no access to the pins once they are connected to the connector. There is just no way of testing it.
I just hope its not the starter.

Same problem with my Triumph America 2004. Has done 100K. Wouldn't start; had the symptoms of a solenoid problem but it was a blocked fuel filter. Got it started by blowing through the filter and it starts better but still has intermittent clicking when starting. Im changing the solenoid as its never been done before. I'll gradually change from cheapest to most expensive parts to get a nice clean start again.
