I've been using a brush hog for years. I just got a flail mower last month (a ditchbank type to do the ditches and around the pond). The flail has the hammer blades. I'm amazed at the smooth cut it leaves behind (probably because the cuttings stay in there getting re-cut more). I would get rid of the brush hog if the speed wasn't an issue. Heavy grass really bogs down the flail mower so I have to go a lot slower in a pasture I haven't done in a while. The brush hog zips right through it. So ... in the parts the wife can see from the patio, I'll use the flail. Where she can't see (to judge the job I did), I'll use the brush hog to save time.
I have had a flail mower for over 20 yrs. with the Y blades. It cuts much better that a bush hog, but not quite as clean as a finish mower. Although unlike a finish mower is it much more forgiving if you hit rocks, branches, or small stumps. It also does not wind row or throw rocks or material out the rear as a bush hog does. I sold my bush hog mowers some time ago, as I found I did not use them. Good video, Bob
Hi Bob, thank you for sharing. Have you cut undergrowth, shrubs, small saplings, that type of material with it? I'm told the Y blades excel with grasses and weeds, but I suppose that doesn't mean that can't cut other material?
I have cut some smaller saplings etc., but it is not made to do the larger stuff like a bush hog. I cut most of that stuff with my bush hog the first year and then sold the bush hog, purchased the flail mower and never looked back. As long as you keep up it will give you a nicer looking job for trails and most mowing.
@@blessed7fold I have a 6' JD that is over 20 yrs old, I can check the model number. I have not had a problem and i believe it is the best alternative between a bush hog and finish mower. It will not necessarily do the extent of what either of them will do, but it does a good job on small brush and grass and I believe the best choice.
@@blessed7fold You are exactly correct....it has worked great for me!!! The knives can be reversed to get a new edge if needed, just are careful on hitting stones and rocks. Have a blessed day. Bob
I got a couple of hydraulic hoses made and "borrow" the dump/curl functions from the loader. The hoses are run under the tractor and zip tied to the hoses for the backhoe. Staying clear 50m behind a flail is a lot easier than 50m all around a brush cutter.
Loosing and tightening the top link of the 3 point hitch will give several inches of height adjustment by tilting the mower without moving the roller up and down
If you have an FEL on your tractor then you have 2 pair of remotes. I use the FEL crowd function to side shift the flail when using it on my 2025r (and the raise lower function runs the hydraulic top link to adjust trim while on the move). It is a 155 cut mower (I think that's about 62 inch). On the 2025 the 62 inch cut is a bit too much for the 18 pto hp. I also use it in my 4066r and it doesn't even change engine pitch in the rough stuff. The 53 pto hp is the limit for the 62 inch gearbox so ai try to take it easy on the mower slowing down at time to avoid loading the gearbox too much. The finish with hammers isn't great compared to a rotary mower. It mows slower. It is ideal in rough ground, it destroys rocks turning them into single, it turns light branches into mulch. If you are breaking in some ground, require a right turning circle, want a robust mower, or wish to mulch your tree prunings then a flail maybe a good option.
Correct. However, if you tap into one of those two SCV's, then you won't be able to curl/roll your bucket or raise/lower your loader depends on which circuit you select. So, keep that in mind for anyone going that route if you intend to keep your loader installed during hydraulic flail operation. You should get a diverter kit installed at minimum, otherwise a rear remote in order to avoid the loss of any other functionality. Good stuff, thanks for sharing Bob!
@@GoodWorksTractors Yes, worth clarifying that point. You only get to use the scv for one operation at a time without a diverter. For those wondering what size flail their tractor can run here is my 2 cents worth. In theory if your tractor can lift it, it will run it, but this isn't a rule to live by. It boils down to the speed of mowing. Avoid (like I actually do on my4066r) running too small a mower for your tractor, by this I mean make sure the mower belts and gearbox can handle the power of your tractor. I don't recommend a 155/62 inch mower for under 32 hp but you can get away with it. Counter weight, flails are heavy. My 62 inch flail is fine on the 2025 under the following conditions. Mow regularly, thick old tall grass is to much for it if mowing low. Mow twice if necessary when running in old ground, mowing high the first time. Leave it a few days for the grass to dry out, then mow lower. Set the mower height high. This enable the flails and roller to clear grass rather than recycle it through the mowing sucking out power. Mowing my orchard with the 155/62inch mower is straightforward if done regularly, but about 30% quicker on the 4066r because of hp. It is not all wins though as hp comes with some difficult side effects. It is harder on the mower, more likely to damage trees and support structure, requires more concentration due to the tight spacing closing in around the larger tractor, has much worse visibility compared to the open 2025. For the 4066 I expect a 2.4 metre mower is the limit, for the 2025 the 1.55 mower is the limit. Ideally I think 2 metre cut and 1.2 metre cut would be middle of the road for the 4066r and 2025r. Hydraulic side shift is a must in tight conditions. I have 40 rows of 2.7 metre gaps (9 feet) with trees every 2.5 metres (8ish feet)
