Great tip on shifting the PTO to allow it to spin. THANK YOU!!! I've been recovering from cancer treatments for the past year. That's really taken the wind out of my sail and everything seems to be a struggle. Most notably has been hooking up the tiller. Easiest way I've found (I'm going to milk this) was getting my son to do it for me. 😎
Black... Hay Black I'm in the same boat with CA treatment since a year ago last Spring, Fatigued all the time, get outta breath and frustrated within 20 minutes of work. So if I can get my JD 2305 rigged and get into the Seat in 15 minutes I'll be ok for a couple hours. Good luck with yours. ( Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma now for 2+ years ). We'll be ok come sundown👍🍀
@@unclefuddelmer9224 I am so fortunate. GOD has truly spared me many hardships. I'm 16 months into it, one tumor, removed, another turned into scar tissue and the last two are shrinking. Can’t say thank you enough for posting this. The tip on moving the selector level to allow the PTO shaft to spin freely helped me, made life a lot easier. Thanks again and keep posting videos !!
Wow, you saved me a BUNCH of trouble with this video!!! I'm a 67-year-old woman with significant arthritis and I live alone. I have six acres with a pasture that has to be mowed, in addition to a garden that I use a tractor-mounted tiller. I struggle for HOURS trying to get that d*mn shaft attached! I have a Kubota B3350 and just getting situated behind the thing is a chore, especially for someone who is not exactly slender built. My tractor has a mid-PTO, so I'm going to set it to the mid-PTO and see how much help that is to attach the brush hog shaft. I worked on that hook-up for THREE HOURS last night and finally quit as it was getting dark. I'll stop back and let you know how it went. I'm excited to try this.
Same here. 59 yr old woman, live alone on 87 acre farm with acres of grass to mow and huge garden to till etc. I struggled for years til i figured it out myself two years ago on how to attach the tiller easily and quickly. I thought id check youtube to see if there were any videos on this subject cuz i was actually thinking of making a video myself to help others who might be struggling. But i see its been done. My neighbor struggled with his attachment and i explained it to him, so he was so grateful for the advice. Happy this video is made. 👩🏻🌾
I am a very new tractor owner, thanks for the tips. I can't believe I didn't think about moving the engagement to the mid-PTO to allow the rear PTO to rotate freely. That really helps.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing me that putting the PTO in the middle will make the PTO shaft move freely around. I have been struggling for over an hour to get my tiller on.
Use a paint pen to mark on the outside of the PTO collar where the splines should line up with it. Makes it easier to line up. Also, if you can find a place to do so, marking both sides of your PTO shaft so you know how which of the 3 ridges line up can also save you time and frustration any time you need to disassemble it.
Just wanted to say Thank you for this video. I had seen it before and looked it back up because I had the worst time trying to get my tiller attached (first time i have attached it since i got it) and knew i had seen you show how to get the PTO shaft to turn freely. Glad i remembered correctly about you showing that lol. So anyway thanks for the video and making it straightforward. I know this was posted years ago but it is still just as relevant and useful to know.
This is the BEST tractor channel available. Sheesh! Thank you for doing what you do! Now here I am about to go order a quick hitch attachment from your store! I already got the PTO link after seeing this video. I wish my dealer had told me about the quick hitch option when I was buying my tractor but at least I found this channel because my dealer in Texas is 3 kinds of worthless! Thanks for codifying your knowledge sir! Much appreciate the effort you put into this channel!
Speaking as someone who lost a pants leg to a NH silage chopper PTO -- thankfully not a leg -- in 1974, the non-rotating shields are a huge improvement. Shouldn't have stepped across it but you get busy and don't always think safety. Especially at 17.
I used to do that all the time as a kid, until I read the account of the fella that got both his arms ripped off when his shirt got wrapped up in a PTO.
Thank you Cory. When I saw the first tip in your video it was a light goes on moment. Now I'll always move the selector to the mid pto before hooking up the shaft for my tiller. I just hope I don't embarrass myself by forgetting to move it back before I start to till. 😉
As always, love your videos. The one way only splines in the driveshaft are usually referred to as oriented or master splined. The reason for this is to keep the cross of the universal joints timed in alignment. Unaligned universal joints would cause a terrible vibration and soon destroy them. I lubricate my driveshaft splines and connection splines with anti-seize compound. It seems to work very well.
It’s worth mentioning that some really old equipment, like my old MF41 sickle mower, has a square pto shaft rather than a triangular one. It is really important to make sure your u-joints are lined up correctly in the correct phase with that set up.
I've never really thought that the pto shaft was hard unless the outside cover was dented, especially the old metal ones. Your right grease is essential.
Hello! I know I'm late to the party but wanted to say thanks for the video and the promotional code to save 5% on the PTO Link. I hope my days of fighting that stupid PTO connection are behind me. Thanks again!
the plastic saftey casings can bind and make it harder to slide the shaft on - we use a can of car wax spray polish to lubbricate the plastic- works well! and cheap!
Helped me a lot. I’m 80 and hooking up attachments is a bear. Have both John Deere quik connect and the other one you showed. Both are new. I’m hopeful I have no trouble with either
Great video and well done. I'm ordering the PTO Link today and can't wait to use it! Trying to connect the shaft without the link is the worst part of mowing my property. Can't wait to receive this! Thanks for letting us know about it.
I bought a JD 2032 last year to replace a JD 2305 that faithfully served for 10 yrs. I've always ran the quick hitches but this time I installed a hydraulic toplink also & it has been a game changer.
I bought a Massy-Fergerson 1723 compact tractor last year and my BIGGEST complaint is hooking up the tiller's PTO shaft! Totally dread it!!!! Lining up the splines is horrendous. I have two different control levers for the rear and belly PTO so I can't disengage it to spin freely. Thanks for the lesson. I have subscribed and likes all of the videos I watched and learned from.
Thanks for the video. I may have to cut mine shafts. But they are not going over each other smooth at all. I may not even be able to get it back apart and I greased it well.
Thank you for the video. I have only had my 1025r a couple of weeks and I disconnected the backhoe and was attaching my tiller. Could not get my 3 point to raise up. I had the hydraulics connected but come to find out it was only connected part way. So once attached fully it worked as it should. 2nd. Learned how to release the pro so I could easily turn the pro and get the shaft connected. Love your videos! Keep up the good work! Thanks again.
Very nice video sir. We run quite a bit of equipment with PTO shafts. The worst we have is a John Deere HX15. Pretty heavy shaft. We actually built a cable that loops over the ears of our quick hitch. We raise it up and use it to level the shaxt with the PTO and then slide it on. They should pass legislation that requires a quick hitch on every tractor sold! New subscriber just because of this great video.
Thank for all the tractor insight. I also am a tractor newbe. Lots of good info. That SpeeCo quick hitch is pretty cool. I would like to help out and buy the quick hitch from you guys but Kalamazoo is a bit far from Corpus Christi, TX. Think I be cutting that 1K miles offer kinda close.
I went through all kinds of stuff trying to hook up the tiller to my Deere 1023. Then, by accident, I discovered the switching from rear to mid connector tip. I couldn’t believe this tip didn’t appear in any of the RUclips videos I found. Now it does. Future generations will bow to you for fixing this omission.
Now I gotta try switching to the mid PTO that will change my life hooking up my PTO I always dread switching implements because they are so hard to hook up by myself lol
Great videos. You are the best. Do you happen to have a video on attaching a post hole digger and using it ? I haven’t been able to find out. Thanks so much keep it up
Big fan of this channel! This vid is probably one of the most useful to me so far because I can immediately put some of your instructions to work. I have a Kubota LX2610 with mid PTO and didn't know I could put it in gear to hand spin the rear, this will be a Big help. Also the PTO Link will be on my equipment before too long! No more bruised and bleeding elbows and forearms. Thanks and keep these videos coming, really enjoy them!
Your education and coverage of tractors is great. I just ordered my first tractor, a Solectrac compact electric tractor. Given your focus on John Deere maybe you can convince Deere to do a video on what their future electric tractor lineup looks like.
Keeping PTO shafts out of the weather, clean and greased…and putting the PTO drive in neutral when assembling..is 90% of the game. If they are clean and greased they install easily…which includes the lock pin!😊
I bought the PTO Link for one of my tractors. Loved it and went back and bought two more for a couple more of my tractors. Im an older guy and believe me it makes it a lot easier that wrestling with shaft to get on the spline. I first learned of these here and thought I would give it a try. Im glad I did. Highly recommended.
I love this channel I want to learn as much as i can about how to operate a sub compact tractor and what all the implements do prior to my purchase because I've never operated one but i know i need one for my meager 2 acres of land
I have connected pto shafts all my life on regular sized tractors with not problem. Then a bought a subcompact, and I swear it is the hardest thing to connect. Just not room to work, especially with a quick hitch on it. I do like the quick hitch. Now I said all this to say, I thing this quick pto coupler would be quit handy especially on small tractor like a subcompact. So no it is not a solution looking for a problem in my estimation. I want one.
As a new tractor owner - TAKE MY MONEY! I'm ordering that PTO quick hitch asap. My dealer dropped my tractor off and the instructions he gave me on attaching the PTO for my rotary mower was 'don't get your hands stuck in it and rip your fingers off.' Duly noted ;-) This system looks a lot easier! I'll continue to binge watch this channel so skill up my tractor awareness. I'm especially concerned about safety so thanks for all the work you put into making these videos! Doing the lorrrds work!
Rotary cutter is one where attaching the 3 pt first and lifting the mower deck will make PTO attachment way easier. If the deck is sitting on the ground, the blades can be stopped from turning by grass or the ground, thus making rotating the PTO shaft really difficult if not impossible.
Good afternoon. If the implement sits for a length of time, you could/ can put grease on the internal splines to prevent rust. A small diameter cable could replace the chincee chain or a ziptie even.
At least on the JD 3039R, with rear PTO only, the PTO output spline will still rotate just over one spline's distance, i.e. a bit over 1/6 of a rotation. (Range lever in neutral - didn't check A,B or C.) Luckily, that makes it possible to line up the splines with the PTO shaft. I don't know if this is by accident or design!
Will the quick hitch your selling work with every attachment? I have an auger, box blade and rotary tiller. I have the John Deere quick connect but I havnt been able to get it to work properly between each attachment
Some of the pto covers have a grease zert like nipple near the bell shape end that is for grease so it will not cause friction between the cover and pto shaft.
There is another collar style that requires twisting the collar instead of sliding it back. Learned that the hard way. Always wipe off the shaft and keep it covered when not in use. Grease it before coupling. Will save someone a ton of time.
Just ordered the tractor PTO Link. Can't believe I've been struggling with this. GWT worked perfect for my discount. Once I get it, I'll try to remember to comment back on my thoughts. I too have a 4066R and although the 'R' makes things so much easier, (being able to control the tractor from the back control panel) eliminating the effort all together is the ticket. At least I hope so.
I've had my eye on PTO link for a couple of years and lately have been considering the Deere version, but your quick comment about the difference and your demo of the installation convinced me to order the PTO link just now. Connecting the shaft is an awkward, cramped affair on my 2038R. Discovering your trick to release the tractor end a while back helped a lot, as did fully extending my hydraulic top link to give me more space, but from time to time it is still a pain. I expect the PTO link to make this process quick and easy every time. It seems that delivery is backed up and I may be waiting a couple of months to feel the joy. Will try to be patient!
@@clintbennetsen6392 Yes, I am happy with it for the most part. One of the connecting pins is a loose piece, so I temporarily lost it (until I bought a couple of replacements, at which time it turned up, of course). Now I have a specific place on the back of the tractor where I put it until the attachment is in place and ready for the pin. When nothing is connected to the pto, I keep the pin in its hole in the tractor side of the ptolink.
@@SethKrieger, I was thinking that little connector pin would be easy to lose or misplace. I saw you can buy extras for like $7 each. Glad you found a solution to keep it handy. Thanks!
Some will mention perhaps a problem with the length of the PTO shaft on equipment; however I don't see that being a problem. Do you? I have a 4044M JD and I'll probably trade it on a 5055 JD to use the PTO connection on. I will be pulling a 3 pt., MX6 Rotary cutter. Your thoughts.
Could you do a video on tools ever new tractor owner shoulf own? Maybe ones that you need for maintenance and then just ones that are always a good idea to have.
Oh hell, I was about to buy these quick link items etc, tried the "move the PTO gear into neutral" trick (didn't work LOL), then the teeth finally caught and the shaft slipped on no problem LMAO. This, after first trying to hitch it up two weeks ago and needing to take breaks due to my frustration in not being able to link it up. Oh well, still going to consider the quick hitch because putting mower/blade on without a quick hitch is a pain.
From what I know about them, the Tractor PTO Link (quick connect) adds 5 inches to your shaft length, so check that and cut it down as necessary to avoid binding and damaging something.
What I really like about the Tractor PTO link is that it protects the spline on the tractor at the gearbox. I realize it sits back in a good bit, but it's nice knowing if you were to back into something or drop something or something were to fall on it, the spline is covered and protected. Very helpful video, I never thought to shift the PTO into the midrange so I could manually turn it. Purchased a new 1025R with the 3049 tiller and it has been a bear to hook up since I bought it, I believe you solved many of my issues. Thank you so much for the helpful tips and for continuing to provide good content. I will definitely be purchasing the tractor pto link.
I bought the TractorPTOLink system several months ago for a JD 4120 tractor. It works great! I bought the 4-piece package so I have a piece for each implement that I have. It is easy and simple to use, but don’t forget the safety pen!
Another great video with a lot of great information and timely advice. Maybe when i bought my 1025r i got the i match hitch and the deere quick connect (i am sure its ok). In retrospect maybe i should have waited. Anyway i am very appreciative of this video. Also liked the pictures of you Chris and grandpa. In some ways mirrors some of my experiences on my parents farm. Thanks again for the video and some memories . You and Chris have a great day day and be safe. Tim
Really good video! That quick hitch is good, but if you have attachments of varying widths, it can be a problem. I use the Pat's lower lift arm quick hitch system and I love it. Half the price as well. Let's you still have the freedom to adjust the width of your lower lift arm position for any attachment. The only drawback is that it does nothing for the upper link connection, but that's usually the easier of the 3 point anyway. As far as the PTO connections, if you keep everything lubed properly as mentioned in the video, it really makes everything easier. I can't justify spending that much for a PTO quick connect when it's usually not that much of an issue for me.

If the deck is sitting on the ground, the blades can be stopped from turning by grass or the ground, thus making rotating the PTO shaft really difficult if not impossible.
ordered the TPO link. thanks
Good afternoon. If the implement sits for a length of time, you could/ can put grease on the internal splines to prevent rust.
A small diameter cable could replace the chincee chain or a ziptie even.
Great power shaft advice.Got caught in a 9N Ford PTO back in the day.I was lucky, the engine was idling and died.
Great Video, lots of info would highly recommend !!
On my tractor lifted all the way up is 1" shorter. That link would really shorten an already short rototiller shaft
Great instruction. Thanks for posting this.
Those really work. I don't use the extra pin. I hog mow and till without issue. Yea that product.
I guess I must be a fortunate individual I have never had a problem with a pto shaft
David, have you received and tried your PTO Link yet?
Will the PTO shaft have to be shorten when using the new connection? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing and helping us learn
Have you received and tried your PTO Link, Seth? Just curious how well it works.
Thanks!
Did it add any substantial length to the connection? Could there be a need to cut the implements’ PTO shaft shorter to accommodate the connector ?
Some will mention perhaps a problem with the length of the PTO shaft on equipment; however I don't see that being a problem. Do you? I have a 4044M JD and I'll probably trade it on a 5055 JD to use the PTO connection on. I will be pulling a 3 pt., MX6 Rotary cutter. Your thoughts.
Fantastic breakdown!!! Very informative channel!!
Could you do a video on tools ever new tractor owner shoulf own? Maybe ones that you need for maintenance and then just ones that are always a good idea to have.
What are the pros and cons of Aluminum vs Steel spacers?
When using the pto Quick connect will it add to the shaft length?
Great video! Lots of good info, Thanks!
Great video Courtney! Mke from Asheville, NC
Ok got it on! All ya got to do to ease pto atach take that guard off!
I will definitely be purchasing the tractor pto link.
that's a nice attachment on those smaller tractors. Not a lot of room back there.
I bought the TractorPTOLink system several months ago for a JD 4120 tractor. It works great! I bought the 4-piece package so I have a piece for each implement that I have. It is easy and simple to use, but don’t forget the safety pen!
Thanks for sharing!
Just found your channel. Thank you for sharing!
Awesome video as always Master C! Where can I order that nice hat on your noggin?? 😀
