  • This is My Vintage 1965 Honda S90 Motorcycle. I review the bike and take it for a test Ride . I always wanted an S90 and found this one in very bad condition but after many , many hours of work it was restored to like new condition. This is one of the great little bikes from Honda like the S65, C100, CL90, CT90, C200. Soichiro Honda was a genius and made some great bikes back in the 60s .

Thanks for the memories! I had one of these back in the 60’s. It was my only means of transportation then as I couldn’t afford a car. It was so much fun to ride! I still miss it. By the way, I am a 73 year old female.

I was a Western Union telegram messenger when I was a young man growing up in Hawaii and this is the motorcycle I used. I used it six days a week and it never failed me. Actually there were only two telegram messengers in the nation when I was with Western Union and I was one of them. It was such a gravy job piloting this little motorcycle all day, delivering telegrams all day and getting paid great money for it. It was a fine machine! Today I am an old man but I still have in my shop a restored 1970 trail 90 that still runs as good as the super 90 I had in the very early seventies!

Back in the 70's a bunch of us rode on dirt trails that were nearby our homes, most of us had like 80cc ~ 100cc dirt bikes. But there was one dude who rode one of these s90's offroad with us, He took fenders off and such to give it a more dirt look. We'd thrash our bikes all day long and that s90 would hang right with us up hills, over jumps, doin doughnuts and everything.

Owned one in 1966, brand new, it was the beginning of my motorcycling career. Now in my late sixties I pilot an FJR 1300. Thanks for the video, the sound of the engine brought me back a long long time ago.

I was in a motorbike club in the 1960s and one of my friends had a Honda S90, amazing little bike, wish I had owned one myself !! He was a mechanic and did lots of work modifying it, tuning up the engine etc. He also altered the gearing to make it higher geared. We followed him down the motorway and at one point we clocked him at 85 MPH !! At the time I had a Honda CB72 250cc.
The Japanese made some amazing and very reliable small motorbikes back in the 60s and early 70s, shame they are not doing so now. These small Japanese bikes like the Honda S90, were so reliable and great performance for their size.

The Honda S80 was my transportation 1965-69 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and I loved it. It got me around campus , and the rest of Madison, quickly, cheaply and comfortably. It was an integral part of my student life.

December 1966 was when I bought my red S90, my first motorcycle, because I could not afford to buy a car. Yes, it was a great little bike, and I rode it for 1 1/2 years as my only set of wheels. I did meet some of the nicest people on my Honda.
After 18 months it was pretty much done and dusted from hard use, and I stepped up to a new 1968 CB175, but the I learned motorcycling on my S90.

I bought a S90 in 1965, I couldn't afford to keep up my car as a student. I sold my car for around four hundred and bought an S90. After riding it about a year I started hanging around with guys that had big Triumphs and was shamed into getting a Honda Scrambler. I had so much fun on the 90 and my Scrambler was stolen reducing me to the bus.

In 1969 i was 7 years old, I lived in the mojave desert and my Dad got me one of these S90's . You are right kids beat them up, I rode mine hard but it took everything i could give it. Mine was black and i would give my eye teeth to have it now. It wasnt a Dirt bike but it was what i had and i had a blast with it. I graduated from it to an early 1970's honda cr 125 elsinore. I loved the Elsinore but i will never forget my Black S90. I would pay allot of money now to have my original but be hard to find. thks for the video it brought back memories.

I have fond memories of the S90 from my highschool days in the '60s. Many of my friends had S90s, but I had a Yamaha 80. I preferred the S90. My friends would ride to the beach, a 60 mile ride one-way, full-throttle all the way at 65 mph. It didn't seem to bother the S90. On one occasion, riding a borrowed S90 far from home, the clutch cable broke. I had no problem riding it without the clutch, matching engine speed to the trans. for shifting, getting it into neutral before stops, pushing it with my feet to get it moving before clicking it into first gear. Memories.

My Parents bought me this same bike when I started high school, I had several "trail" bikes including the Trail 90 prior to the Sport, I had several modifications done to the bike, including, Herman and Collins cam,, larger carb, spacer bringing total displacement to about 110cc. Changed the drive sprocket from 14 to 12, aftermarket exhaust, etc. I wish I had never sold it..... So much fun....

I was one of those kids that beat on my 90 pretty bad. Once, I'm ashamed to say, I even managed to seize the engine, 'cos as a16 year old I didn't bother to check the oil level, just revved the guts out of it everywhere I went. Oh, the recklessness of youth! Had fun on that little bike though.

This was my first bike, bought in Athens, Ohio in 1966. The Honda dealer Bob Hawk just gave me the key and I drove it off. Could do 65 mph on the road to Columbus. Was so much fun because so manuevevable. Only regret was that I didn't get a 250 Scrambler but the S-90 was what I could afford. Haven't had a bike for years but thinking about a Suzuki TU250 S because reminiiscent of this style. Wonderful video and fine restoration job. I tip my hat to you.

I had one of these in 1966, a red one like yours and I loved it. Would park it and sit back a distance and just admire it. Of course I would choose a beautiful setting and maybe even a sunset. I was only 16 after all!! I was once stopped by the police and one of them took a ride on it. Said he was blown away by the performance of that little bike but the gear shift was on the wrong side and upside down? I sold it when I got my first car. Would love to find one to ride again.

Correct, the US version did not have turn signals or the rocker gear lever. 8.5 hp and earliest flyers said 9 hp ( 1964). your trans does not sound as smooth as it should..but the engine brings back memories of 20,000 miles I put on the 90 and later the CL-90 between early 1965 and 1969. top speed with stock gearing is 62 mph .. rode a lot 2 up.. no complaints at all.

Great little maneuverable bikes and tons of fun! I wish more small bikes would be exported to the USA, like they had years ago. My smallest bike, a classic 2-stroke HONDA MB5 (50cc, 5-speed manual, 7.1 HP), is a total blast to ride, and I get tons of stares and questions when I ride! Nothing like riding a small bike fast (mine only does 53 MPH max, but it feels like 85)!

This Honda was my first bike. I had such great times on my 1965 model in the UK. No blinkers! I and my then girlfriend did many miles. I kept it right into the seventies. I remember the indicated top speed 67MPH which I reckon is exceptional for such a small motor. I did ride it hard as I had to keep up with friends on British 250s. Fond memories.

My first bike was a 63 (I think) regular 90...more like a mini dream. I loved my little bike although it only lasted one year for me. I read an article about a kit to raise it to 120 something and so stupidly did it. It was peppy while it lasted. Anyway, that was my start. Have owned a bike every year since 65. . Loved the sou nd of the little Honda in your video. I met a guy a few years ago who had a really nice little s 90. I got to talk to him and he said he noticed it in a guy's garage and inquired. The guy had bought it in the 60's and dumped it the first time he rode it and never rode it again. It only had a few miles on it and sat for 30 years. The guy loved his little s 90 and a person could hardly even notice where it had been scraped.

I do have a 64 S90 that has factory blinkers front and rear and the front and rear fenders are A hard plastic with a flared end On the back part of both fenders i forget the name. Of the plastic at this moment but apparently they didnt survive very well over the years and people that do have them think they are worth a lot of money mine has been stored indoors since the 60s. When my Dad bought it and out it into storage right away where it has remained therefore my Chrome and most of the bike is in pretty good shape and the motor is free with compression all original too !!! I do have hopes of restoring. It and displaying it in my home one day as ive owned a rode several Honda’s over the years bigger and newer of course because of this one being my Dads it has a little. Extra value to me and it happens to be as old as i am too

Thanks for the video , I have my Dads 1964 Honda S90 that has been stored inside since 1965 my Dad never really rode the bike so it’s got very low miles and is complete It does have the blinkers and flared front and rear fenders made out of some type of plastic I haven’t quite discovered what it really is. It’s very fragile feeling perhaps because of age or maybe that’s just the technology they had back then I’ve actually been watching RUclips videos on how to make Silicone molds and I’m thinking about using mine to make Fiberglass reinforced copies to me the Fenders are the coolest parts as they look like Harley Road Glide fenders Honda tried to copy to give the little bike a bigger appearance my Dad didn’t ride this bike much because he really wanted a Dream or Baby Dream like one of his brothers rode who eventually moved up to a Honda 750 four to make it more comfortable to ride with his wife and keep up with his Harley riding buddies inthe 1970s I’ve owned 4 or 5 Honda’s myself and one of my favorites was a 750 four which I thought had great power to weight performance around town and onthe highway it also allowed me to add big bike accessories like a tandem seat with backrest and luggage racks (aftermarket ) I appreciate the info on all the different parts Honda used onthe 90s I’ve been kind of thinking about hoarding several to use for parts bikes

It's funny how some forgotten things 'come back' to you after nearly half a century...!I recently bought a 'mint' '08 Honda 'Metropolitan' w/the gloss-black & gloss-gray finish (all the 'high-performance mods' already done)The last time I had a Honda was 1971...a 'CM90' Super-Cub...and I was thinking 'Well, I might be too slow in reaction-times to ride anything like this safely...I'm nowhere near as young as I think I am, despite being far from 'feeble'.The instant my hand rolled-on throttle...EVERYTHING came back! All by itself! It was amazing! My hands/feet/body/eyes all worked by themselves...I didn't have to 'think' about anything...just ride. (the tire-grip of the 'IRT 90/90-10 50J' tires is MUCH better than the 'skinny-thinnys' in the 'old days'...they feel like they are anchored to the road, and vastly better 'road-feel'...no constant 'bounce' from every little ripple!) The distinctive 'tinka-tanka' sound from the Honda '50' engine was just the same as my '68 had...as soon as I heard it on start-up, it was like I was 14 and 'home' again...instead of the reality of being nearly 63 and eighty pounds heavier! This 'Metro' is a magnificent little beasty! It runs perfectly smooth and starts instantly (although it is wise to let it 'warm a little' before taking the road...the engine will tell you 'I'm all good!' after a minutes' worth of automatic idle) I wish I had the money necessary to restore one of the 'Old Icons' just to enjoy it sometimes in good weather on a back-roadblack-top...but the 'Metro' is a damned fine substitute to replace the 'old memories' with!

    • @nobodyyouknow222
      @nobodyyouknow222 7 лет назад +1

yes.. don't force anything.. fill the cylinder with kerosene..and let it sit.this is the main ingredient of liquid wrench.. if no luck.. drain / suck that out.. and try with Liquid Wrench. .. allow days for this stuff to work.. not hours. You may have to pull the manifolds and head bolts and gently use rubber mallet to remove the cylinder head. at that point you can look at the cylinder and piston..and assess the level of rust and corruption. go ahead and remove loose rust above the piston... with wooden and plastic scrapers.. plastic pot scrubbers.. and liquid wrench. Tri-Flow a penetrating oil with silicone.. can be helpful.. as it is a real lubricant.. but the liquid wrench is both solvent.. light lube, and slightly acidic.. which is what you want. In the end..you may need to use a light hammer ( small ball peen) AND piece of wood.. to break the piston loose from the bore... remember the strongest part of the piston is at the edge..and the center is not. slowly and majestically.... since the rod is one piece.. you cannot split the rod cap and take it off the crankshaft.. so the crank has to be lubricated and free to turn !

Cool, I bought one brand new in 1966 for 438.00 cash. I purchased it from AFL Motors 19th and North avenue in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
(AFL no longer in existance for many years)
I had engine and transmission apart on several occasions, trans would pop out of second gear, so I took it apart and replaced worn gears. I had the bike up to 72 miles per hour down hill with two people on it, it was definately topped out and screeming at that speed, the bike was never intended to go that fast. Many good times were had on that little bike, those were the days, ..... ;-)
I drive Harleys now, ..... not nearly as much fun as the old
Honda was back in the day.

@@captlarry-3525 '' got a best speed of 95 mph with a tail wind. extremely reliable.'' Not impossible at all from my experience !!

Bought 1965 brand new . You are correct. It was my first real motorcycle and I did EVERYTHING WRONG..you can do. Broke it in wrong, used the wrong oil. Over tightened and stripped or broke screws and bolts, even the oil drain plug... and cracked the case. Thrashed the living daylights out of it... drafted trucks on the freeway.. pulled the baffle out of the muffler.. loud and burns the valves . Still it wouldn't die. Bought a used one in the late 70s, tore down the engine..but the new crank I got was wrong. Yours doesn't sound quite right.. is it a Lifan Chinese engine ? Hm.. nice job. I never ever saw one that color. Great little bike..and it is a dis-service to the US that we cannot buy bikes like this . This is what ALL beginners should be learning on. Not 250 twins that make you lean over and go tunnel vision !

    • @MrVintagebikeguy
      @MrVintagebikeguy  9 лет назад

Sean O'Connor Some parts are easy to find and some are very hard, Hard would be Exhausts and air boxes. Ebay is your best bet for parts. The bike is very old tech and very straight forward to tear apart and fix. A good tip would be take apart all electrical connections and clean thoroughly, this also includes all grounds. make sure to take pictures and label all wired before you do this.

They are too under powered for freeway driving. New they were capable of 60 MPH, which I did many times, but I weighed 155. Great for buzzing around town, and for off road riding. Top speed was listed as 62MPH.

    • @MrSTOUT73

top speed is 62 or 64... it will go 55 all day.. even 2 up. great 2 lane road bike.. I used to lie on the tank and draft semi's .. but that is crazy dangerous, dirty , and tense.

    • @nobodyyouknow222

62 mph with standard gearing. Not legal on fway in Calif ( 15 hp minimum)we did it though ! on tooth change on the primary should get it up to 65.. but will affect all the gearing.. headwinds and drag wont let it go much faster.

This engine has a pressed together crankshaft, with a captive one piece connecting rod. The big question during an overhaul.. is going to be.. What to do about a crankshaft. Some specialists can press apart and press together a crankshaft.. the question will be where to get bearings..and who to employ who can really do the job right. Really. NOS cranks are probably total unobtanium..and the fit of anything chineese ?? who knows. The lifan Chinese engine is probably a bolt in.. but not original..and ???
