I loved the alien futuristic feel a lot of media had back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Now everything is overly streamlined and "postmodern", which is not the future I signed up for, lol.
It certainly was the new millennium. Just like how the space age made every car look like a rocketship, people really wanted to live in the future. Nowadays, we have flat inoffensive squares, simple colors, and dumbass alegria art that does nothing to differentiate itself from the others. Because good visual designs are for people who don't need fifth swimming pools, apparently.
What you say is true but you got the terminology wrong here. Postmodernism as an artistic moment in the 90s and early 2000s was all for style, experimentation, weirdness, and not holding the audience by the hand. See PS2 David lynch commercial, Lynch commonly cited as a postmodern filmmaker. The problem with modern technology design is that it doesn’t adhere to ANY overarching design theory, other than least-offensive mass-marketable plainness. Some people call this refinement culture. I understand why you used the term however.
The sound design here is ASTOUNDING. Every click, whoosh, warp, screech, zoom and beep genuinely makes you feel like the Xbox is an alien computer system from out of this world, and it’s criminal that user interfaces these days have abandoned being unique and special for streamlined conformity.
You can tell the Xbox was made by Americans, though. It's not a bad thing, but you can see how bold and "in your face" it was, compared to the PS2's understated, soft and eerie menus. Both consoles have this alien, utopian, vibe, that in today's soulless standards would not fly with the board of directors.
Microsoft tried to make it like that so original xbox even has some menu sounds that pretended to be futuristic and about nasa but they just scared people lol
I remember it was Christmas day! Me and my older brother just got out first console ever. We turned it on and seen all this and I still get goosebumps from the excitement!

Anyway, I'm pretty excited to finally play on this system after all these years. Grew up with the PS2 and, despite my opinions of XBOX from 360 onwards, mostly influenced by my dislike towards Microsoft in general, I've always had a soft spot for the original XBOX and I won't lie, playing Halo with my friends and brothers at houses that had an XBOX was always fun, even if we had to convince our dad because it was an MA15+ rated game and, well, we were below 15 obviously.
