That seems to be the case with most traced art honestly. My theory is that since they can't even draw their own art without tracing, they never really bothered to learn how to colour either. I know this one anime "artist" that also traces and sells her art has that problem since they shade with black and just adjust the transparency.

"ripping off", or as it's referred to in actual educational groups that goes back centuries, "imitating" art is nothing new. Many famous painters have imitated and stolen as well as adapted art. Some of these are still used in art class to teach students how to adapt their skills.
This video and the way people present this argument are honestly just policing art, which is truly an offense to the art world in itself.

Something I want to clarify in this video that's a bit of misinformation is that redbubble does this weird thing where they aggregate reviews of the same product across the whole website. So people don't necessarily have reviews about their store but is more about showing reviews of the blank product they provide. It's a way to kinda insinuate to the customer that their product regardless of what redbubble store your shopping designs from will positively reinforce peoples decision to buy. Its a scummy round about way of securing a sale. :/

It also brings back memories of the pastel Nessa and Marina situation, where people would argue that "even if it's pastel, you have to add the right tone to her skin or you're racist smh" or "it's fucking aesthetic damn it." They wouldn't make them outright white, just pastel. They were still visibly a POC, so it seemed fine to me.

tbh I don't think he whitewashed it since he literally wanted to make something with that rapper to begin with from what it looks like.
he seemingly liked the expression and pose from the original artist and copied that (which is obviously not okay since yes, it's traced and he could've at least drawn it in his own style if he was already gonna use the same pose+expression )
So there doesn't seem to be any intent of purposely whitewashing the original art but more to just take the pose irrelevant of who the character is and use the pose for the character (rapper) he wanted to make stuff off. (meaning if the original art was any other colour, it would've still ended up like it did)
To ensure there aren't any misunderstandings here:
The tracing is still not ok
That he makes money of that is even less ok
However do I think he intended to whitewash a black character because he has something against black skintones or anything:
no. he clearly only wanted the pose and expression of the original art piece.

Regarding the actual person, I feel like it was kinda dumb to post on redbubble, not only do a lot of actual artists use the site therefore they're always in the loop but redbubble doesn't seem to tolerate art theft at all so it's a surprise that they're still up.

Would have been worth explaining the difference between Referencing and Tracing so more people understand the importance of each. Tracing is when a person duplicates a source image line for line with very minimal or no changes at all from the original. Referencing is when an aspect of an image is used as inspiration but there is a distinct difference between the original and the new creation. Such as referencing a particular pose but changing the anatomy, proportions and all other aspects to suit your own character. Drawing the pose from a new angle with a new character is a perfect example of referencing properly.

Erm, I mean with that statement towards the end, I think we've REALLY appreciate artists over the years. For example I live in Florida and I've seen COUNTLESS of art shows and markets that also include the artists themselves, there are also so many programs nationwide and sitewide to explore when it comes to projects, designs, entrepreneurs, scholarships, etc. With social media as a bonus, to share AND show your work, you can really put yourself out there one way or another. If you want to make art your business, there is SO MUCH opportunity for that. No one is stopping you from what you want to do. Who said life for an artist had to be easy? Its not going be, it's up to YOU to be motivated, creative, and smart in this world. Thats how it is in reality.

It’s because there has never been positive representation of black characters up until recently. In fact, black people and other people of color were depicted TERRIBLY in most cartoons from back in the day. People even make the argument that Mickey Mouse is a blackface character. While it may be the same act, I encourage you to strongly consider the intent behind whitewashing, and consider the history of animation. We still have far more white Disney princesses than ones of color, which is not bad, but it’s something to keep in mind. Tbh, we just want to see ourselves more.

When Butch started commissions he had a chance to show off his original art, except he just traces and it's VERY blatant he does. $200 for a traced drawing. You aren't paying for the drawing, you're paying for the Butch Hartman name. He's just leeching off his own fame for as much as he can squeeze. This reminds me of an artist on dA and instagram who literally used prisma (or another photo-to-picture) app to create a "painting" and then told NO ONE they copied a reference until someone called them out on the comments in their dA.
The person who called them out is my friend, and they had to do it after they saw all these new artists being like "Omg I'll never be this good!" and this person was humble-bragging, saying it only took them 2 nights >_>
The reason it looked so good, is because it is the exact SAME image... line for line... except they painted over 2 characters in the background - but at best, it was traced 100% and they didn't take credit for it being a "study"... It's incredibly toxic to act as if that came from your imagination. Truth be told, it took my friend seeing it for half a second to recognize it was too perfectly-chaotic (lifelike) to not-be a photo, and he found it by doing a reverse look-up. After they called them out, the "artist" put a link to the OG photo in the description.
It's okay to do studies, and it can be okay to trace. But say as much and don't pretend it came from your imagination and that you free-handed that. Also, it isn't okay to use an app like prisma and pretend you painted it.
Btw, the artist is cyeldraws and the image is here: www.deviantart.com/cyeldraws/art/Cocktail-hour-881029855
Edit: if I seem angry, I am. Because I know what it's like to be a teenager and young artist, and to see this and have someone pass it off as their own creation is inherently toxic - not inspiring. Those kids will compare themselves to this.

Also!! Just a piece of info about Redbubble as a website, the product reviews are NOT for the specific artist's work, and rather for the product that the artwork is being printed onto. the 150+ reviews are for the quality of the product that redbubble uses for every artist across its website.
I really hope this person gets taken down, no-one should have the ability to make money off of stolen work, and as an artist that both sells and buys pieces it's infuriating to see people getting away with it.
One of the reasons why Redbubble may not be taking action with it is because they might be looking for Fanart copyright infringement because that's a big part of Redbubbles store and its rules. That may be why they're glossing over it, but that's just a guess.
