GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!
Just a little more info guys......
This video is a basic layout but to be done with better quality materials. I would highly recommend only using 2k Urethane clear coat with rustoleum paint jobs to minimize the possibly of issues not 1k clear coats. You can use any of the tricks you see in my videos with pearls or flakes in regular automotive paint applications as well not just Rust-Oleum paint thanks for watching and god bless you all.
Nice work! Recently I used didspade pearl powder in some clear over rustoleum gloss black. It didn't really give it a pearl flop like I thought. It has more of a green hew to it. Have you had any luck getting a black pearl or house of colors type of out come from any powder in clear over gloss black?
I know KP pigments makes a black pearl if you want more of a finer natural Pearl look I would definitely look into the interference pearls they give it more of a ghost effect or natural smoothness thanks for watching
I'd really like to see some pearls over red, orange, and yellow bases. This orange is beautiful.
That hood came out speechless. You did a good job. Need that hood on my man cave wall. Lol. Thanks.
The end result of this video was simply AMAZiNG!!
Thank you for helping a working man satisfy his need for a rewarding project!
This channel is wonderful , very informative,, excellent results,,, with limited resources . Money.. always looking for the next video. Keep up the great work.
My car is in desperate need of paint. I don't have a dime to spare, so I was thinking about using what I have on hand. I have a gallon of each, synthetic enamel primer, Valspar John Deere Blitz Black, and automotive 2k clear. After watching this, I might could get some pearl powder to change it up. You gave me something to think about. That hood turned out great.
Rustoleum Pro is awsome. I use it to restor lawn equipment and farm impliments
Bought a used Buick Park Avenue very cheap bèause the hood , trunk and roof had peeling clear. It was a deep forest green. Went to Tractor Supply and bought Oliver green tractor paint (1 qt) and aluminum (1 qt) for $9.00 each. Sanded it down and sprayed with 2 cans self etching primer at $5.95 each. Used spray gun to cover hood, roof and trunk taped off at the body lines. No need for clearcoat. Came out a nice two tone light over dark green that could have been factory.
After watching your videos I took on painting my stepson's 07 Mazda3. Rustoleum gray base followed by TSC clear, 3 coats, with the first having pearl. Surpassed expectations, looks great. Thanks for the info!
Awesome man glad to help and thanks for watching
How long do u wait to spray the clear ?
@arealmaintenanceandrepairl1103 The can will tell you
Right off the jump, I have 1 suggestion; had to pause at your 4th or 5th pass, I would suggest not FULLY releasing your trigger off edge. I'd try to release about half,(gun dependent,) to keep ypur steady airflow but halt paint flow, make ypur smooth wrist sweep and fully depress trigger flowing paint full PRIOR to coming back over the edge onto your next pass. It's absolutely simple, which is surely different from easy, but it's a good habit and will yield good result. Just my 2 cents. Again , congrats. Looks good brother
Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching
The black paint color issue you mentioned about non cleared oil based is the UV heat over time as to why it fades to satin
SHEESH got me rethinking rust oleum
Yes sir that come out great. I asked about the destroyer Gray with Orange Pearl a few videos back. I got to say that come out great.
Yes sir thanks for the suggestion it was def pretty color combination 😎👍
I got a old regular cab short bed Toyota I’m going to try this on. Unless you need something to make videos with I’m in nc also
That orange came out very nice. I have a little more problem with trash (Bugs) in my paint as I have the great outdoors to paint in. I have not had the luxury of painting in a paint booth or in any enclosed area.
The last time I painted I had to hurry it up as I was chasing bad weather (the temperature was dropping, and the snow started about half an hour after I finished). Because of the time constraints I ended up tiger stripping the hood and will need to go over it when I get back to the United States.
Looks awesome. Great tutorial. I may try this with my 1990 Honda Accord project.
I was casually watching until I saw that final product! That's world class!! Excellent video.
Im going to do this on my truck. To be used as a work truck. I have a shop like yours. But i will have to make some type of paint booth for sure.
Thanks!
Thank you for the super chat and God bless
Dude that came out awesome Beautiful color.
So I had an issue a little while back that was my own fault. I was cleaning up a Duster’s engine bay. Sprayed the Gloss Sunrise Red and didn’t think about the touch up period of time.
I cut in a lot of areas just with the rattle can.
I found that I HAD to scuff everything up with scotch bright pads due to how hard the paint cures, I will have to do the same if I squirt some clear on the jambs so it won’t chance fading.
Can’t wait to get started on the rest of the car
Only thing that sucks is the North Cackalacky weather being sketchy, lol
You must be in the USA as Rustoleum here in Canada is $120.00 a gallon never mind the other supply's. I love your skill as well as your spirit of adventure in trying different things. Your truly informative on painting with different paints.
Yes sir I'm in the US North Carolina to be exact my channel is all about trying new things with anything automotive thanks for watching
There's nothing cheap in Canada !
The wall above the heater looks pretty scorched. Ishtar want to do something about that. 😊
Always informative, great content my man! 🙌 that Del Sol video gonna be 🔥!!
Came out great your doing everything I wanted to no about rustoleum how about showing some flat clears metallic over rustoleum
I def will be in an upcoming video so stay tuned and thanks for watching 😎👍
If you use the Majic brand clear coat you mentioned from Tractor Supply over the Rustoleum, how long do you typically wait for the base coat to dry? The Majic clear recommends 7 days minimum, but I wasn’t sure if that only applies to the Majic base coat. The paint job looks great!
I usually give the paint a few hrs to settle but it does fine never gave me any issues.
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS thank you for the feedback! I’m planning on painting a truck soon and wanted to clarify. Thanks again!
@@BrianLChristopher no problem always glad to help
I'm definitely gonna try some new pearl packs ✌️
Rembrant masterpiece . great job Van Gogh
obligatory comment to feed the algorithm... good work, turned out nice!
i love it looks very good
Just started watching definitely looking forward to the end
Perhaps I missed something. How dry should it be between coats ? I was under the impression that paint had to be 100% dry otherwise you would trap solvents and it would crinkle up, but I have very little experience.
You want it to flash off to where it's tacky to touch but not pulling paint off onto your finger so it varies by temperature if you want to see the process in more detail check out my Rustoleum beginners guide from start to finish on my page let me know if you have any other questions thanks for watching!
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS And so if I am repainting a vehicle, it is not necessary to use a primer ? Or would that be a good idea ? Perhaps to help fill imperfections in old paint ? I have a work truck from the 80's that I am repainting. And if I did use a primer , would I allow that to fully dry for a day or two ?
@johnmazza9432 typically you only have to use a primer to cover up bare metal or bodywork areas so it definitely helps to fill imperfections. I would wait for the primer to cure then wet sand with 600 grit before paint for the best results.
Awesome work, GOD BLESS!!!!
LOVE THE VIDEO MY BROTHER!!
I recently mixed up some Ace "Rust Stop" paint - 1 1/2 parts Harbor blue to 1 part Metallic Aluminum. Makes a real pretty light metallic blue somewhat like the old Chevy "Nassau Blue". So far, I've just brushed it on a couple of motors, but was thinking about actually spraying it on a car. Would you be interested in experimenting with something like that?
Yea def sounds interesting thanks for watching
It looks phenomenal!!
Around 10:30 " lvlp" gun..here I was thinking the whole time " bet he built that garage ".. carpentry background all I heard was "engineered beam pressure treated?" Lol. High Volume Low Pressure..that's what I use to rest my fender rafters on I guess. Cool video. I just ordered a mini astro gun to run on my 30gallon just for fun. Painted professionally back in high school but back to turning wrenches (at a much slower pace) these days at Volvo/Mack. Only spraying I di there is out of a Mack Can and it's over a weld or a drilled frane hole haha. I did just paint my truck tho. 3 trys to make it live-with able. Pretty slick tricks ya got tho. Congrats
Yes we did actually we built it about 23 years ago def needs some upgrades but it does the job lol thanks for watching
looks great! WOW
Show more on the paint gun. Tell me more about it how old would you buy again. I’m new I’m learning myself new subscriber. Thanks.
Check out my Vevor paint gun review video it shows and explains a lot more thanks for watching
Looks really great.
Spraying solvents, outdoor propane cylinder inside and open flame heater in spray booth. This could get interesting!

Does the tractor supply clear have UV protection or can we assume it will chalk up like Rustoleum after some time
I don't recommend the tractor supply clear it doesn't have very good UV protection at all definitely check out the speedo coat 2k urethane clear coat I have in the description of my videos thanks for watching!!!
Great video, and great job, Thanks
Got a question about the duplicolor(lacquer) over rustolem(enamel). Have you had any short or long term problems with this matchup.
I don't recommend the duplicolor stuff it's not good at all in my opinion no UV protection and falls apart after a few months this was just for test purposes. I know everyone says you cant do laquer over enamel but it just depends on the products and usually if you go wet on wet it will work but it's just not the best option. I recommend finish one 2k urethane clear coat over Rustoleum gives it an amazing finish just like any other automotive paint job let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching!.
Thank for the great info and a big thanks for all the great videos including this one.
Hi. I have a question & thanks for the great video.
When painting a vehicle - which budget primer should be used before the rustoleum oil based is used? I don't recall hearing you mention it . But if you did , I apologize
Honestly I've used many different ones the biggest thing is just making sure that your panels are clean thoroughly and sanded good before applying the primer but typically I use spray can most generic primers rustoleum duplicolor etc. to spot shoot and high build Nason filler primers through a gun for bigger repair areas hope this answered your question and thanks for watching
How about a gloss black and dark Grey with a silver ash pearl ?
Rustoleum works well as a primer for sure but you gotta think by the time you're buying pearls, clear and going through all the trouble of sanding and masking you can probably spend the extra $50 and get a 2k (base, clear and activator) paint kits off ebay that come in every color from any make or model of car featured in the last 30 years. No disrespect because I used Tremclad on my car the last time I resprayed...Just looking at the result thinking I might as well have done it right given how much sweat overhead there is in the prep work.
Is a good idea to put your paint thru a filter into your gun
Nicely Done
Thats heck of a paint job looks good man
That was awesome!
Can you add mineral spirit and paint a vehicle
I've heard of many people using mineral spirits to thin Rustoleum as well as laquer thinner automotive reducer etc. So yes I've just always used acetone per the label instructions thanks for watching!
What about smoke gray? Does that fade overtime without a clear
The lighter colors with the exception of red don't fade as bad as the darker colors usually white and smoke gray do the best long term thanks for watching!
Awesome paint job. How long did you wait for the rust-oleum to dry before clear coat ?
Give it about 45 minutes to an hour till it's tacky to touch but not pulling paint off on your finger and good to go for clear coat Thanks for watching
When buying the rust-oleum paint from Loews are you just buying base colors, or will they mix up a particular color for you? You probably have a lot of leftover paints and mix your own, but that would be a lot of trial and error for us.
I'm buying generic off the shelf colors but you can also apply this same procedure to spray can rustoleum where there's a bigger selection or automotive paint. This was really just a basic guideline for how to get a unique Pearl paint job for cheap. Feel free to check out my newer series where I use a multitude of different rustoleum colors and Pearl combinations Thanks for watching
What is a good mixture ratio For Tractor Supply paint
Typically I will start with 60% paint 40% thinner because the tractor paint is a bit on the thicker side but you can always thin it out more to your liking if you still think it's too thick thanks for watching
Dude it really help thanks
and also if you want it to lay out like base coat mix that 50/50 especially spraying with hvlp/hte ive done paint and body 15 years or better and grew up in a body shop
I'm showing a step by step mostly for beginners 50/50 is great too. I've been painting over 20 yrs myself and not really trying to say any way is better or wrong. I'm just giving everyone a basic guide to go off of and they can tweak things from there to find what works best for them thanks for watching
Can you use a rustolum base from the store to custom mix the color?
Like a brandy wine base?
Yes you can check out my video where I show mixing colors to get certain metallic bases thanks for watching!
ruclips.net/video/99vSnU1UsLo/видео.htmlsi=uMjd6A8NDlYS7g3F
Question: how long did you wait between the base coat and applying the clear coat with the pearl?
I always wait till the Rust-Oleum dries enough to the touch to where it's tacky but doesn't pull paint off on your finger check it in multiple places by touching the tape then your good to go typically about 45 mins to an hr thanks for watching
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS thank you so much for the quick reply! I've seen videos of people waiting 48-72 hours, and they get a bad reaction with the clear. I think I'll try the Rust-Oleum paint in my old Camry because of what I've learned from your channel! You have a new sub buddy! I'm in. Thanks so much sir!
@Bigmitch_2001 just make sure you use urethane clear coat most ppl have issues cause they use acrylic based clear and it shrinks thanks for subbing
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS Sorry to keep bothering you, but I don't know the difference between urethane clear, and acrylic clear. is urathane clear 2k?
@Bigmitch_2001 they both can be 2K clear if you look in the link of my videos to my Amazon page I have products called as seen on RUclips I have Speedokote urethane clear it's about the cheapest you can possibly get and is very good quality if you want to check it out but yeah it will say it on the can
Nice work. 👍 love the orange doing a similar paint job on my s10.
S10. Classy man!
I must have missed the filtering of the mixed paint into the cup!
Can you spray clear over vinyl graphics
You can but it will fail and start chipping away I would definitely say paint the graphics on if you can or just leave them without clear coat Thanks for watching
I would like to send you a photo of my hood that I painted it is crazy it's a color shift with a rainbow gliter on top I learned it all from u I can't figure out how to send you a picture
@joshuayates4591 send it to whitleyautoworks@gmail.com as an attachment thanks
How long minimum should you wait to spray clear over rustoleum? I will be using hardner in my rustoleum. I want to avoid wrinkles fisheye as much as possible
My suggestion is if you were going to apply clear coat and want to minimize issues as much as possible I would not put a hardener in the rustoleum just wait an hour for everything to flash off good after your last coat of Base and then you can start applying coats of clear thanks for watching
Does the tractore clear offer good uv protection on fading & water socking throw to the body filler
No I've been recommending everyone use a better clear than the tractor clear its great for test panels but doesn't carry the best UV protection and there are way better choices in the same price range. Look into speedokote 2k urethane clear on Amazon for around $75 shipped or Nason products thanks for watching.
That looks great. How long between coats of paint?
20 to 30 mins between base coats and 30 to 45 mins between pearl coats thanks for watching
What size tip did you use to spray the pearl?
1.4 tip Thanks for watching
The black really looks good and I’d give it a 4-5. The white really doesn’t pop as much in the video and would probably look better in person but I would give it a good 4
Looks great, I’m so surprised at that, how does the rustoleum compare on durability compared to a cheap automotive paint? I just subscribed, I like your style of going after it!!
In all honesty the dry time is a little bit longer on the Rust-Oleum but it lasts just as long as any other automotive paint once it cures out good thanks for watching
Nice job. I’m considering painting my truck. What equipment do you recommend?
It really just depends on what your budget is I have personally been using Vevor paint guns lately they are very affordable and a good compressor / filtration set up is key to a good paint job. My set up is in my video link below if you want to watch and get an idea of what to get thanks for watching
ruclips.net/video/RwlljTaDH38/видео.htmlsi=QSMDjvQ-egBvUH6P
How long to dry between the rusto to the pearl coat? Flashed or fully set?
You want it to be tacky to touch but not to where it's pulling paint. It should still have a tack touch the tape in multiple places if it sticks to your finger but doesn't pull off paint you're good to go
Awsum job bro…
nice job kid.
looks nice
Do have any recommendations for a primer sealer?
Also does hardener actual increase durability or just reduce dry time?
I've used a bunch of Nason brand primers through my gun and the transtar 6401 in the spray can works great and as far as the hardener goes it helps with durability over time and obviously dry times is the big thing
Idk if I missed it so to do clear over Rustolium u don’t have to wait ?
Yes wait for the base to completely flash off then apply your clear coat thanks for watching
I'd be interested to see what a 2 tone base, Say like a gray and black accents or even stripping, or a white and black accents or stripping, Just how much of a color difference there was between the 2 undercoats under those pearls, If you would notice a difference at all.
How do i spray silver metallic for a 78 trans am
You can do it with rustoleum black and adding a silver pearl clear coat mix on top
I agree with the thin spraying, but you have to be careful not to wash the color out.
You're very right and it really just goes to preference and what effect you're trying to go for this is more of an extreme example getting full coverage but you can use it for an accent as well thanks for watching
Do you have to put pearls in the clearcoat? or can you mix it with the paint instead and then put clearcoat on top? Is there a difference?
If you mix these pearls in the paint you get a metallic paint effect so it does matter which you choose feel free to check out some of my other spray out vids thanks for watching
How would you get a sherwin williams "Salty Dog" rustoleum color?? Want to paint my outdoor railings & the basic colors are meh . Would be a sweet car color
You could get safety blue in rustoleum and some black then tint the blue down to the desired shade you want yes it would be a cool color on a car also thanks for watching
great video
Very informative! New to your channel and Just subscribed! I will search your other videos but if you haven't covered the tip sizes you use and did you remove the gun cup screen for the pearls? Great video! Thanks.
Yea I don't use a cup screen with the pearls and I use a 1.4 tip for base and clear. I use a 1.7 tip for shooting high build primer and heavy flakes. Thanks for watching
Thank you for the information, I am going through your videos and found some of this on your comparing flakes and pearls video. You are the best on these videos!
No problem always glad to help
Great vid man! Got a question.. how long do you wait between coats?
Typically I'll wait 20 minutes between base coats and 30 to 45 minutes between clear coats hope this helps thanks for watching
Nice job
Great instructions! I'm about to repaint my 2004 Crown Vick Chestnut Brown and want a translusient Pearl... So how and wat pearl would I use for that??
BTW... Do you always wear flip flops so you can get the piggies pianted at the same time?? 🤣😂😀
Yeah I'll wear those things so I get better aerodynamics while I'm gliding around doing my paint work LOL what you want to look up is interference pearls check out kp pigments they have a lot of good ones to choose from
Hey mate my my son wants to paint his car dark blue but once to put some silver flake in it but he does want to use a clear okay just add it to the paint or not cheers Graham
Yep you can add it into the base to give it that little bit of sparkle thanks for watching

How long did u wait before u laid the pearl on the rustoleum, great knowledge and video ..whats color was the rustoleum paint and where do u normally get ur rustoleum from
The color was a custom mix by me smoke gray gallon with a quart of gloss black added to darken it. I waited an HR before shooting the pearls and did 30 to 45 mins between coats I got the paint from Lowe's home improvement store also at home Depot as well.
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS thank u... was the pearl u used on the hood a paint with pearl or kp pigment brand

@@lssleepers6464 I used a combination of clears but if your not going with the tractor supply clear I would recommend the duplicolor paint shop clear in the quart can for small jobs if your going full paint job I'd say get the tractor supply majic clear gallon and hardener or automotive clear such as high teck 7000 from a paint store such as Napa Auto it's the cheapest automotive clear at around $70 for everything.
Good job brother it looks pretty wet
I think speedokote clear is a much better option without a huge difference in cost.
Could possibly be I've seen his products used I get these products cheaper because I work at a paint store but maybe in the near future I will do a review on them thanks for watching 😎👍
What you do to take out the orange peel? Dramatic difference between the cut before 26:39, and then after.
If you saw any variation it was the paint settling I didn't do anything to take out the orange peel. However if afterwards you do have any and your not satisfied you can cut and buff all the same as with automotive paint jobs thanks for watching.
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS Appreciate your reply. Seems to have set very nicely. Decent paint for non-factory resprays.
Thanks
JMHO, pearls aren’t supposed to change the color of the paint job. They are to enhance the paint with the tint of a pearl. Shows up mostly in the sun or when light hits it. Think of a pearl white Cadillac. If you wanted an orange hood, why not just paint it orange. I think you used way too much pearlescent. No hate. I use Rust-oleum too.
@@WindRider1 I agree
Well I don't know if you have seen dip Pearl paint jobs but this is kind of a spin off of that and yes the reason why it looks the way it does is because I did not use a mid coat for the pearls but regardless I have done many paint jobs this way as well as many others on RUclips and so on but you can always research that if you want Thanks for watching
I would never recommend putting lacquer over and Alkyd enamel. I've done it in a pinch but there is so much that could go wrong...
What size tip in your gun?
1.4 tip
good show chap, what respirator r u using?
Just your basic 3m respirator nothing fancy thanks for your comment and thanks for watching
Nice job how long u wait for flash time between coats
Typically 15 to 20 for the base and 30 mins for the Pearl clear coats thanks for watching
No you didn't ! Looks great how would that have turned out with white underneath?
With white as the base it would have been very hard to get full coverage being that this is a pearl if you want to check out some of my other videos you can get a better idea of different mixes with different colors and Pearls thanks for watching
Thanks my wife just rolled painted my truck and got good reviews And yes White 🤍
Three weeks of prep work 💪
Very cool 😎👍
I never could get the paint shop clear to stay glossy. Always had a haze even after buffing
Yea I would agree I'm not the biggest fan of it either honestly i say use auto clear like Nason speedokote etc. Thanks for watching
How’s the Duplicolor clear?
I'm just going to be honest it's hot garbage I wouldn't recommend it especially for the money I would just go with a 2K urethane clear speedokote or finish one make great products that hold up way better
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS lol I knew it. I would like too see you put rust oleum clear or house clear coat.
@michaelchaney3101 I mean I can do whatever for an experiment I do spray outs with different stuff all the time I just wouldn't recommend Rustoleum clear or some of the cheaper 1k stuff on anything that you want to last more than a few months
