Windows Power Plan Benchmarks - Which One Is Best For Gaming?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Choosing which power plan will provide the best gaming performance has been an ongoing debate since the dawn of their introduction in Windows OS. Many people swear by the high-performance plan while others suggest to use balanced and let the system handle the rest. This was something I never tested for myself or for the channel and I decided to run some benchmarks which I share in this video.

i really like how you showed us even the drivers u were using while doing this test. very nice.
Im so used to just turning everything on high performance. Thanks for this! just built my first and build and will switch back to balanced.
The only real difference between "balanced" and "high performance" is idle power consumption. When set to high performance the CPU will run at the max core/uncore multipliers 100% of the time. When set to balanced the core/uncore multipliers will be variable depending on what you are doing. Laptops are a little different, those are also factoring in not only battery life but reduced thermal capacity so you will see a noticeable performance difference between balanced and high performance when on battery power. In the past many recommended running high performance mode on gaming PCs due to some games exhibiting widely fluctuating clock speeds and/or noticeable stutters when boosting up to 100% when on balanced. I don't think this is the case anymore though.
Makes quite a bit of difference to my 13600kf gaming in balanced mode 77 Watts same game in Ultimate mode 130 Watts, at idle it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Wich better balanced mode or high performance? @oktc68
@@oktc68Also does this make a difference in games?؟
@@ALI_KDX. did you find out?
this is not true.. high performance does not run at max core 100% of the time..
How about changing to Power Saver mode?
fuck no
this impact is more drastically different when it comes to laptops. The CPU speeds change a lot between plans to extend battery life.
so which one should i use for laptop
which one is best for laptop pls tell me, i hav a laptop.
@@MediaofSpeed7switch to balanced BUT if u play open world games like gta and minecraft i highly recommend to switch to high performance bc if will fix stuttering
balanced if not using laptop app . Laptop app can auto change
Balanced
Yeah, my PC used to crash on it. It overheats to the point where the when I get blue screen constantly.
Selecting ultimate made me go from 2300 fps to 2500 fps looking at the sky in minecraft
ok so first talking about ultimate performance it's pretty good but it overheats my pc alot and lag my apps and my whole windows 10 pro and also it use alot power my pc was about to die then i switched to high performance this was the best option for me and it use more power but not that power that use my ultimate performance it's a mid option it's good for gaming and good for idel work but talking about balanced it's REALLY good at some point but in the gaming it just sucks for me i guess this video made me to switch high performance because it's W
TDLR:Balanced power plant is the best for high end pcs as High performance and Ultimate Performance Will make No Difference from Balanced power.
Ryzen 9 5900x, 64GB, RTX 3080-12. Game - DCS World. After flight you can save track and play it back later. With Ultimate power plan this tracks are accurate most of a time (still not 100%). With Balanced - very often playback is not accurate at all. Probably because CPU frequency is more stable and not variable with ultimate plan.
Switching to high performance was the only solution to screen flickering on my lenovo legion gaming laptop. I tried updating drivers and reinstalling the OS to no avail.
On my Windows10 PC, I have Balanced, Balanced: High Performance Overlay and Balanced: Max Performance Overlay... anyone know anything about these Overlay Power Plans ?
I am using an old i5 4440 with an RX 580 and with balanced settings my games were stuttering a lot with wacky frametime graphs. After I noticed this I changed it to Ultimate performance and now I'm getting 60FPS on Dying Light 1 when previously I was getting bad 45FPS.
You need to go to the search bar and look for Power, Sleep and Battery Settings.
This will only be able to be changed when set to "Balanced" on your Power Plan. From there, you can choose an option that actually makes a difference when you choose balanced. That was probably your issue, it was most likely set to a true "balanced" power plan and your CPU wasn't boosting properly.
You can set it to high performance from there while leaving it on the balanced power plan and then your CPU will boost down as it should, then boost up during gaming.
It "should." If not, then you may be stuck using High Performance and keeping your CPU at max frequency 24/7, which kinda sucks.
for me difference is in frametime, on balnced game is stuttering a bit, on 100% plan, not high, just set to 100% i have zero stuttering
Cant tell about desktop, but when i play val on my loq i7 14th gen 4060 variant... I usually get fps close 200-300 on battery conservation mode... In standard power plan... As soon as i select the ultimate performance, i get an insane fps boost of 200-300, like the maximum it has reached on my laptop on low settings was 700 fps really it does affectlaptop performance tbh...
Try downloading steam games at balanced you will se high cpu usage .. but on high power plan its better its in mid 50% ... and no i dont have low end system its bcs of my internet 2gb
I'm glad that you did a video on this Danny, because I was one of those people to always set my computers to "ultimate performance."
I guess it's not as important as it's cracked up to be.
The actual GAIN is in the 1% and .1% LOW !
You saved me danny but im gona use it anyway, since i dont know how to overclock, at least, Ultimate Performance plan is the most close thing i will ever geto overclocking😂.
People seems to miss the point with power plants. It's for those who have a really shit useless PC. Balanced to high performance will give you a boost ONLY if you have a PC with very very bad components compare to what we can buy today. This is meaningless and also why I use Balanced mode because I have the very best i9 13900k with new 4000 RTX serie GPU and top ram etc..
FACTS:
Do you have a PC you bought/built 10 years ago you will notice a boost but if you have a new pc this will not even help you 1%.
Power plan isn't for pc it's only for laptop 😅
include 0.1 % lows if you want to see a difference
the name of my cat is also danny lol.. she has 4 kittens :)
The f
Thing is the delay will get better on ultimate performance
Low 1% is lowest on Balanced in 5 out of 6 games ;)
So.. its in the noise. Better leave it in balanced for better power saving when idling as well as wear and tear. Would be nice if loading or exiting games would automatically change power plans.
I ran for awhile Balanced power plan and had stutter issues and latency. Also had some crack and delay with sound but rarely. Then I switched to High performance and everything run smooth. The temps are still about the same as when I ran in Balanced mode, about 45 at idle and 50 - 55 when gaming, I5 13400 with stock fan.
PC on Ultimate Power Plan: "I HAVE THE POWER"!!!!!!
Gamers just browsing the web: "Settle down He-Man".
I was using ultimate performance but it was actually causing my breaker to trip, because it uses more power but I really wasn't gaining any performance in games lol
the razer cortex power plan is the fastest
your home electricity 110v or 220v?
The only difference between High Perf vs. Ult Perf is whether keeping your HDD ready to spin all the time. For normal gaming, it shouldn't make any difference.

I wish there was a video about the options that are unlocked in the energy options when set to balanced, if using the better performance of settings does the same as high performance of control panel
But you didn't test the power only of power modes? I mean how much watt's?
5:40 "...power plans are for the most part "neglegible" on high end gaming systems" LOL!
i play second life i use balanced on my rig with good cooling but on my msi delta laptop balanced gets up too 84c and on best battery life it never goes above 63c and the performance is the same
I can't remember how Windows 10 did it, but on Windows 11, selecting Balanced allows you to go into the "Power, Sleep and Battery" options where you can then further tune the Balanced power plan from "Recommended" to "Better Performance" to "Best Performance".
I mean, dayum, Microsoft, how many "Best Performance" power plans can you make? And wtf is "Recommended"? Does it "know" when you're gaming and auto-select it to "Best Performance"?
Or is that entire section more or less dedicated to laptops and chooses based on either battery level or if it's plugged into an A/C outlet?
Because it doesn't tell ya ANYTHING lol.
And last but not least, back in the day, CPUs used to stay at ONE frequency. Then... they started going from their highest frequency to the lowest frequency. There was no in between.
Now we bounce around 25mhz from 2.8ghz to 5+ghz and everything in between depending on load and threads used. Unless you're a madman and turn all that off and just lock the highest frequency in like it's 1999, again.
Unfortunately, overclocking and stuff like that makes hardly any difference like it did back in the day. You used to OC your Athlon 64 3400+ by 200mhz and gain 5 or 10 fps... and you could tell it.
Now? CPU and GPU frequencies bounce around all over the place by 100-300mhz and it doesn't even matter.
I know this and I still go in there and PBO this, Curve Optimize that and add boost clocks to my 5900x. For what? Nothing but a "feel good" effect from dopamine a serotonin being released from my brain :-( FFS, I can OC my 6700XT 12GB by 100-125mhz on the core and 150mhz on the memory and I'm LUCKY to get +3fps max. And that's if I'm already at 80-85ish fps. So, all that for zero visual difference. If I'm at 40fps and do the same? I MIGHT get 41 fps. I might not lmao.
Overclocking isn't what it used to be, so that's why I'm going to try Balanced for awhile and try the three settings you unlock with Balanced: "Recommended", "Better" and "Best."
But we all know I'll go back to either Ultimate Performance or use the Bitsum Performance plan when it's all said and done. More power, more watts, no gains ftw.
the ultimate plan was not hidden by default on my msi laptop, idk why
When using my laptop, the only game that performed worse when set to Balanced power plan was in PAYDAY 2 (known to be very poorly optimized). It ran poorly on just one map so it's no big deal. Every other game ran basically the same.

his test rig is the dream pc of many
Another thing that the power plans can impact is thermals. I had an issue where a PC had an idle temp of 55-60 in high performance, 45-50 in balanced and 35-40 in energy saving. This obviously means that the build needs a better CPU cooler, but if budget wise that is not viable, adjusting the power plan can help for short term thermal solutions, which essentially help with system stability.
This PC was running an i7-13700k with no overclocking
Higher power plans prevent cpu throttling which decreases stutters. It’s not going to magically increase your max fps but it will keep your cpu from getting surprised so to speak.
Placebo
i wonder , i'm using a 10 yr old pc , just with ssd and graphics card updated to 1050ti , would high performance be better in this scenario , or simply having the cores unlocked is enough and leave it at balanced
why is it when i switch to balanced to high performance i get better and smoother gameplay and my cpu stuttering isn't all over the place??
either someone lowered the max CPU power % on your balanced power plan or there's something wrong with your chipset drivers. Balanced should set your CPU to max performance state whenever you tab into a game so it shouldn't matter.
I used ultimate but my fps was 100fps lower than on high
In my pc of i5 3330 in intel h61ww mobo..gtx 1050ti..16 gb Ram..win 10 enterprise..having a 10 year old corsair VS 650..my pc was constantly restarting while starting up games and stuff like that..but when I put min and max pc settings both to 100% the restart has absolutely stopped..!! Any ideas why ? Is the voltage regulator in the PSU was comfortable supplying a constant voltage rather than varying voltages ?
Wish someone would do a video explaining the difference between Windows Power Plans (old school control panel) and the new Win11 "Power Mode" (UWP Settings app). It says "Optimize your device based on power use and performance". When looking up this question, all I find are idiot's guides for using Windows Power Plans. I don't think a ton of people have noticed that these are two different windows settings.
If you have good temps you can use high performance
These powerplan are useless on Desktop but very useful on Laptop while on batter mode.
I'm on windows 11, 32gb of ram, ryzen 2700 cpu and 3070. I was wondering why I was getting 30fps max on cyberpunk 2077 even on low... and I discovered that I forgot my machine on power saver plan as I am off grid on solar power here in SA.
is is bad to use bitsum highest performance all the time ?
It depends of bootleneck on CPU yes or no.
on ryzen 5600x i have little micro stuttering at balanced but zero stutters on high performance, when using cpu and tdp is almost similar to 2-3w
Same here. Stutters go away with using ultimate vs balanced even on a 11700kf and a 3080 card.
I have something called Driver Booster Power Plan - Can't really find much info about it? Should I use that Power Plan or change to either balanced or high perfomance?
On my old pc with 12400f and RTX 3060 it used to make a huge difference but not on my new pc with 13700k and RTX 4070 .. Runs the same clocks in games and frames are about the same
when someone's old pc is more powerful than my current pc

Overall which one is better high performance or ultimate performance
You loosing responsiveness. How fast the CPU react & process interrupts for ex. If you OC your CPU the Power Plans have less impact on the CPU depending how you OC it. Ryzen usually is recommended to use Balanced because of it works differently than Intel.
So uhm i watched this video because I thought i didn't undestand powerplans. Here's what happened with my Laptop today:
I've been playing Cyberpunk on Ultra settings with RTX turned off 'cause the Laptop couldnt handle it anymore with all the mods I have installed. I've capped the fps at 60 to not run into thermal problems. Or so I thought because today I suddenly got immense frame drops from 60 all the way down to like 4-7 and then back to 60 and after a couple seconds down again. So I watched the thermals running Cyberpunk it I noticed that the CPU throttled at 95°C and turned off turbo boost which is when the fps drop happened, which itself is odd imo cause the CPU is only at like 4-10% usage but whatever. After a bit of frustration I decided to try and change the powerplan from balanced to ultimate performance... Now I can run Cyberpunk even with RTX turned on (not on the highest rtx settings but whatever) and my laptop runs at 60-75° and the CPU doesn't even change into turbo boost so it only runs at like 2.5GHz which is where the low temperatures come from... I'm so confusededit
edit: oh and also it consumes less energy now... nothing makes sense here
Why didn't you show best power effecianty..
My computer isn’t charging is it because it is on balanced
in idling clocks are lower and voltages are lower... Thats differents.
The BIG question is if in the gaming settings, if you turn on graphics performance preference, does that make it so the power only increases with the specific game selected??
what about "AMD Ryzen High Performance" compared to just "high performance"

Power plans won't promise you in terms of fps boost but it effect overall system latency and input lag ultimate performance will give you the best gaming experiance
Isn't Ultimate Performance power plan identical to High Performance power plan, 1:1? Because it seems no-one has spotted any difference in latency, input lag, FPS between this two.
@@divzed3737 both are great options but for me when i run latency moniter in high performance i noticed that ntoskrnl.exe spike to 320 microseconds but with uiltimate performance i saw a spike too but was between 265-270 with many tests so it's slightly better in latency acording to my tests 🤝
Conclusion of this video, "I'll have to do more testing."
not more different when using ultimate performance and high performance
Great video. Thanks man
i have i9 processor & selected power saver plan cuz it doesnt heats up like a beach, talking about gaming issues i havent encountered lag in fact i didnt see any difference
For me it's simple: Some games have micro stutter when energy saving or balanced mode is activated. When i change to performance, the micro stutter is gone. So i activate max performance every time when i start a game.
