279?? They've gone insane. I actually have an Akaso Brave 6 which I bought for about 50€ and although the video quality is fairly decent (considering the expectations), all else is rubbish and started falling apart soon after. Considering I have a GoPro Hero 1 that's still going fine I won't buy any of those cheap cameras again. Been saving for a GoPro (or one of the true alternatives out there now). 279 for a crappy camera with a bundle of crappy accessories that is a crappy copy of a good camera... Yeah, no. Oh and I think it could be an interesting video comparing the stabilization of the cameras. Not many of those out there.
Same boat! I have a Brave7le. My first camera not knowing anything about cameras. Its decent as a back or for a shot I dont wanna risk my pocket 2 for. I really wish I would've gotten an older Gopro on ebay or something
In the video comparison, I liked the GoPro because it felt it was ready to be posted I thought that was the akaso. The akaso wasn’t as oversharpened as GoPro, and a lot more flat ready to raise saturation to preference. Both did well. The akaso post stabilization is a bad idea. I think they’re all over priced anyway, akaso just raising prices to get closer to the GoPro and dji action 2. The only realistically priced camera is the dji action 1 when it was 200.
I have the Akaso Brave 4 and the Akaso V50X as well as the GoPro Hero 9. I first bought the Brave 4 because I knew I wouldn't make many videos and I just wanted to dip my toes into the action cam market. I think I got it for $70. It was the right choice because I did only use it a few times. More recently, I needed more cameras to film DJ sets for my youtube channel. I bought the Akaso V50x and definitely regret it. It's super buggy. I have to re-encode all the videos though special software or else there is no audio. There are weird trailing colors on low light usage. I immediately realized I needed something better so I bought the Hero 9. Akaso was ok when I was making one video per year, but now I can justify paying money for a GoPro. It's not that much more money and the quality is very noticeable.
I'm totally with you man, I think it's considerably better for not much of a difference in price. Stoked to hear you picked up a Hero 9. With the firmware updates on those, they've made it really solid!
My go pro 9 having a broken screen like 3 to 4 cracks after it fell off. And I dived in water with it and still it's not leaking. Now question is is it still safe to dive in water with that go pro anymore. Or should I get a new silicon case for go pro.
I have both the osmo action and the akaso. I didn't pay nowhere near $279 for mines though. I have the 7LE though with the front facing screen and had plan to do a comparison with osmo but after seeing this review I feel shame. Lmmao! It was an awesome review my friend. Thanks for sharing!
I was wondering if the gopro was recording at flat color profile or gopro colors? I feel like it was gopro color profile. So maybe flat color comparison would be more just. But still i would buy gopro 6 or 7 if i wanted to go cheap i guess
As someone who is endlessly searching for the perfect travel vlog camera this was a great video. You could definitely tell the cheaper camera from the clips..not a bad camera but the colours on the GoPro so much nicer
The Osmo Action was going for around 200 bucks last year. It's such a shame they raised the price back to 300 bucks when they released the Action 2 so the price difference wouldn't be so big. At least I managed to snag 2 of them before they did.
Another great video, bit late to the show as I've been very busy. However i get the same question all the time, as an action cam fanatic and "tech geek". I always have family asking me what the budget version of my set ups and gear. Hard to answer but i'll be able to send them this video. SO glad you highlighted that MP size is just something that really doesn't matter as that is hard to convey to less informed people. Also the ending is exactly why I have my cameras on me all the time. My family & girlfriend always say "why do you have that camera with you" whenever we go anywhere. Then they see my Instagram post or I just send them what I make and they say "Actually... now i know why you record so much now". Its always about creating memories and being able to look back on good times!
I might make a video on how far GoPro has come! Walk through the different generations of GoPro to show the leaps! I don't think the Akaso will make its way into that video though
I looked at the pricing on these cameras an when you look at the Akaso 8 being $279.99 and the GoPro Hero 10 being $349.98 I think it is a no brainer. The GoPro, with all its benefits, is well worth the $70. I know the GoPro normally goes for $550.00, but nobody is buying them for starting price anymore. So, again no brainer!
@@DavidManningvlog Checked the web, Akaso does not exist in my country, probably some regional thing. We have other brands of action cameras that are really cheap around 80$, kid toys.
GoPro most definitely, I’m not a big post color correction editor. So what the camera films is what I post to social media. So a cheap camera doesn’t do good in that department for me.
The crop on the Akaso in imagine stabilization is a deal killer for me! I have and shoot a lot with the older Brave7LE. I wish i would've gotten a gopro from a generation or two earlier and spent about the same amount of money.
That's sort of what I'm feeling for most people. If you're looking to save some money, the previous generation GoPro's are still super dope! Or even the Osmo Action 1 is a killer camera for a great price!
@@DavidManningvlog Just to piggy back off this comment, do you think the GP2 processor will/ would be the better way to go concerning the GoPro cameras? Seeing that it's what they're gonna focus on now going forward...over getting an older one that may be/ is discontinued and purchasing mods may be more difficult for a lot of older mods. ✌🏾
Hey David! I really appreciate your channel and all of the helpful tip videos you post about camera settings and gear! Would you mind making a quick video about the best GoPro10 settings for snorkeling and best ways to use the GoPro when in the water? This would be very much appreciated as the last GoPro I had was a 6 (in the casing!) and I'm ready for an update!
That's a solid idea J Salvemini! I solely use the PolarPro ND Filters, so it would be a really good cheap vs expensive episode to compare them against a cheaper alternative. Have any in mind that you want to see?
Great video! Something missed to me: Akaso declare a stunning 400fps for super slow motions, while GoPro stops at 240fps. Have you any test about this feature?
The 400 frames per second looks ridiculous. Super pixelated and no good. BUT, even 240 is suuuuuuper slow motion and I rarely ever use it. Something would have to be moving super fast to need more that 120. The frame rate race is a lot like the resolution race, more isn't necessarily better or needed
There is one thing else to consider as well; how dos it stack up with the Osmo Action 1? I mean for $20 more the OA1 is still a very good action camera even though it is a bit older. I wish DJI had stuck with the original body of the OA1 when doing the Action 2 instead of doing the gimmicky modular design, I just don't see many using the Action 2 opposed to the Action 1.
The price is to offset the cost of R&D to make the new style for the Action 2, it would have been impossible to keep it close to the originals price without just reusing the body they already had. This is the issue I have with GoPro. Up until the 8th gen 5-7 were just slight changes to the software end but the body remained the same, so the price stayed the the same... too high IMO. The 8 saw a new body but the internals stayed the same, slight increase in price. The 9th gen though saw minimal improvements (unless you count glitches as improvements) and it saw another price jump.

Hi, great vids. I've been using a drift 4k camera for last couple of years... unreliable crap! Finally took plunge and bought hero 10. Realised dont know what the hell I'm doing with so many setting options. I need to get my knee down on that learning curve. Lol here goes loads of video watching! Cheers for great content!
For $20 more just grab the DJI Osmo 1, I love that camera. I went to the DJI from a Neewer G1, which was ok, did what I needed it to do for a year or so.
Love the videos! Any more travel/adventure videos coming?? Last GoPro I owned was the Hero 3...and now looking to add an action camera to the bag again - seriously looking at the Hero 10, question is - for a nonaction-y family is it worth it? not going to be skydiving, or white water rafting in the futureish...Thoughts?
I'm honestly as surprised as you! Once I read how healthy it was, I figured it would taste like cardboard, but it legit tastes just like the kids cereal. Also, I've eaten two boxes already😬
9:26 -> GoPro is not good, it just shoots warmer tones like iPhone in a RAW profile, now that's disgusting. I'd rather prefer Akaso's cooler flat tone & do whatever in post. But then again, Akaso doesn't give true colors, so that's a deal breaker.
30 words or less: If the GoPro isn't in your budget, but you want an action camera, you can make decent videos with the Akaso. But, if you have the money, get the GoPro.
I actually had an email not too long ago asking me to do something like this and I thought it was a scam (and maybe against Amazon's rules for how it was going to be done). There definitely are less expensive options out there, but it definitely comes down to quality. And the megapixels is something I hate hearing about, too. It can be so misleading because this camera has a better sensor than that one, or this one has this firmware to make it double.
Great video David. Have you ever used a "wind slayer" to combat wind noise. I used one on my hero 7 and it did a nice job. I now have a hero 9 and I have one for it as well. Just curious.
I would like you to clarify your commitment about going after the 8-9 against the this budget camera. With that statement you should do the side by side to compare side by side money
I use the more inexpensive action cameras for multi camera indie film shoots, e.g. in car camera m/ motorcycle angles. I currently use older AEE S71 action cams that are semi equivalent or in some aspects superior to the Go Pro Hero 4-5 range of that era in conjunction with inexpensive Hohem gimbals. To upgrade from a four camera Akaso Brave 8 to a four camera Go Pro Hero 10, much less a Hero 12 might cost $1200 more. There are places where “cheap” action cams are a better choice.
Dude, I don’t know how much money you make but you are the richest person I know with that beautiful family of yours. I know you don’t but never take them for granted.
I like the camera thing is if you are hooked on a gopro then that what you want buy the gopro but the camera can do a good job and i don't know if he had it in the water proof case but the camera does have good sound quality so if i was you buy it and try it out sometime people that do reviews are not going to be true to the game because some of them are getting paid to put a product down
imo the in camera stabilization alone is worth the price difference. If your buying a go pro, especially the 10, you likely wanting that stabilization quality.
I've been enjoying Magic Spoon more as a healthy alternative to ice cream for a late night snack. Two things though...it's very spendy for cereal, but comparable to other high protein foods. The other thing that's a little annoying is it sticks to your teeth. Not enough of a deal breaker. Combined with some high protein milk is a great alternative if you need more protein in your diet and most people do.
Osmo Action 1 if can be found I believe is still the best bang for your buck action cam. I saw a bunch of them on sale a few months back. Love the content as always David!
The "cheap" Akaso (300€ ) actually make no sense. The price of the top model is so high that you can buy a DJI, GoPro, Insta or other right away. And unfortunately the Akaso cameras only take nice pictures when there is little movement. If you use it as a real action cam, the framerate is unstable, many drops, compression blur/interpolate, overcharged edges and image errors are really bad. An old GoPro from Ebay for half the price makes visibly better and smoother videos. The Akaso software is also a bug festival and customer service non-existent. It's this typical social media influencer hype product where everyone suddenly reports about it because someone started and you don't want to lose touch. The small Akaso series can be interesting for people with little money. But over 100€ you are better with a used GoPro and at 300€ you can also buy new DJI/Insta/GoPro.
Why not compare it with the Insta360 Go 2, which is in the same price range? This is a great compare but, if you had 300 bucks, which would you go for?
As of today, 8/30/23, the GoPro 9 Black is $249 (5% cheaper with Target Card). I’d probably stick with that and add on the battery back. Similar dollar amount and better quality.

That cereal has vegetable seed oil in it. I'll pass
You might aswell get an older gopro for even cheaper like i paid 200 for the hero 7 black and its better than this, thats the smarter and more sustainable way to go
Buy the GoPro and then buy an accessory kit on Amazon, every single piece you have doesn't have to be from GoPro, just battery and charger, everything else is too expensive just because it says GoPro on it. It's amazing, to me at least, that GoPro has had a "bug" of some kind on every camera they have released, yet they are still on top of the market.
sure pixel wise GoPro is still ahead, especially details...i find that the Akaso is brighter than the GP...GP seems darker overall...its tough in the end GP still would win with any cheaper action camera...stabilization is another issue with Akaso and others.
you forgot to mention something... the issues of reliability of the go pro. I dont care if the go pro can take quality video, if its constantly overheating, rebooting and corrupting files.
Tbh, i think the colors on the GoPro is a bit over saturated.... The colors is not really natural on it. That is why i never use my GoPro in "ProTune" mode
I just ordered the GoPro Hero 10 before I found your review. I appreciate your honesty in reviewing. I've never owned an action camera so this is intimidating to me. We are headed to St. Croix in a few weeks and wanted something that I could snorkel with. Do you have any suggestions for snorkeling accessories or things needed! I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Well, I am going to be the contrarian. I don't like the GoPro 10's over-saturated and -sharpened look, in both video and photos. The Asako looks like a much more flexible output for post. And let's face it, most content these days is viewed on phone screens and the different shrinks even more on smaller screens.
Hey David...love your content Would you ever do a video in Ocean Beach? As it appears you're in SD county. I used to live in OB and miss the f£ck out of it

I have an Idea for your next video, do one for accerssories for the disabled community because I have Cerebral Palsy and I would like your input because I have a GoPro hero 7 silver and if you need help please let me know
I had the gopro and I don't recommend it. The app is so glitchy with a rubbish user experience, the camera itself its flimsily made ~ the battery cover on mine fell off after less than 6 months, and the hoops customer service made me jump through to send a replacement were wild; hours on the phone, uploading intricate video of the defect to youtube, hours and hours quibbling over my personal info & when they finally agreed to send it, the replacement never actually arrived. Then, a month after my years warranty ended, I was charging it as normal and there was an awful electrical burning smell in my house. I found the charger completely melted and fused into the camera body, so I was forced to just throw it in the trash. Waste of my time and money, defective and dangerous, with utterly useless customer support. Still looking for a viable alternative :/
But does that color on the GoPro really depict the true color? Is the sky really that blue? Is the color just being enhanced for deeper color but not true color?
Hello (: I have a question, it is possible to switch from normal video to slow motion with the waterproof case on, per example? Meanwhile you are diving and you can't take the case off. I have the feeling that, since the screen is not working meanwhile the case is on, the general options are really limited with just the two buttons on top... Thank you for your help!
Can confirm, Morgan cried a bunch at that ending. Great success!🙌

I remember and still have my Yi 4k+ which was better than the go pros of the time. I use a action camera so rarely I've never felt the need to upgrade
30 words or less: If the GoPro isn't in your budget, but you want an action camera, you can make decent videos with the Akaso. But, if you have the money, get the GoPro.
Great comparison...I think the DJI Osmo action 1 camera is better comparison to the GoPro 10 for cheap vs Expensive
Still love the Osmo Action 1!
David, Have you ever evaluated the Telesin GoPro bluetooth remote? I saw it the other day and the price was around $30.
I got my first GoPro a Hero 10 what is the best editing software for a beginner.
Whts good for us DJI or GoPro?
Now the question is should i buy this Akaso or almost new Osmo Action for 170-200eu from second hand.
Very good review, thanks
I use the more inexpensive action cameras for multi camera indie film shoots, e.g. in car camera m/ motorcycle angles.
I currently use older AEE S71 action cams that are semi equivalent or in some aspects superior to the Go Pro Hero 4-5 range of that era in conjunction with inexpensive Hohem gimbals.
To upgrade from a four camera Akaso Brave 8 to a four camera Go Pro Hero 10, much less a Hero 12 might cost $1200 more.
There are places where “cheap” action cams are a better choice.
I still rock my OSMO action cameras. One of my favorite cameras for hot or cold weather.
The Osmo Action 1 might still be the best first go at an action camera from any brand. That thing is still so good!
@@DavidManningvlog absolutely! It’s a workhorse of a camera.
Dude, I don’t know how much money you make but you are the richest person I know with that beautiful family of yours. I know you don’t but never take them for granted.
How long does the battery LASTTT????
I believe the Akaso 8 can do 480fps slow motion…would like to see what that looks like
It can, but at 240 the footage has already broken down to where I wouldn't use it, so going to 480 just gets worse🤷♂
BTW this isn't a criticism of the comparison. I'm asking for a follow up since I know David already has an Insta360 Go 2.
As of today, 8/30/23, the GoPro 9 Black is $249 (5% cheaper with Target Card). I’d probably stick with that and add on the battery back. Similar dollar amount and better quality.
That cereal has vegetable seed oil in it. I'll pass
You might aswell get an older gopro for even cheaper like i paid 200 for the hero 7 black and its better than this, thats the smarter and more sustainable way to go
That's sort of what I'm thinking too Julian!
HI Dave 🙌
Hi Abhijeet!👋
Buy the GoPro and then buy an accessory kit on Amazon, every single piece you have doesn't have to be from GoPro, just battery and charger, everything else is too expensive just because it says GoPro on it. It's amazing, to me at least, that GoPro has had a "bug" of some kind on every camera they have released, yet they are still on top of the market.
Why did t you talk about under water performance?
Ps that cereal is crap. Look at the ingredients! Poison oramma.
The GoPro also comes with a couple mounts.
I want some magic spoon now.... but I am in Australia and we done have it here. :(
I can't tell if the colors look richer on the GoPro or if the Akaso just isn't as dark/dim.
Oh btw, you have a beautiful family!
Great vid... An Osmo Action can be had these days for $200.00 USD and looks better than the Gopro.... :)
sure pixel wise GoPro is still ahead, especially details...i find that the Akaso is brighter than the GP...GP seems darker overall...its tough in the end GP still would win with any cheaper action camera...stabilization is another issue with Akaso and others.
you forgot to mention something... the issues of reliability of the go pro. I dont care if the go pro can take quality video, if its constantly overheating, rebooting and corrupting files.
Nice review , but personally I feel akaso image quality too soft and white balance not as good as Gopro .
Are we not allowed to see how the Akaso video stabilisation turned out?
What camera would you recommend with a budget of £200 - £400?😁
Tbh, i think the colors on the GoPro is a bit over saturated....
Thanks for sharing
The Akaso looks a hell of a lot like the DJI Action 1 which is even cheaper :)
Well, I am going to be the contrarian. I don't like the GoPro 10's over-saturated and -sharpened look, in both video and photos. The Asako looks like a much more flexible output for post. And let's face it, most content these days is viewed on phone screens and the different shrinks even more on smaller screens.
Why did you completely ignore the fact that the Akaso has 5x optical zoom? Gopro has zilch?
Hey David...love your content
Would you ever do a video in Ocean Beach? As it appears you're in SD county. I used to live in OB and miss the f£ck out of it
the price comparison in my country is ridiculous. the gopro10 is TWICE the price of that akaso, not a mere 70 dollars
Its for it to be secure for no dirt and stuff I think
I have a GoPro and the next time I get a new one I will save up for another GoPro. I have an Idea for your next video, do one for accerssories for the disabled community because I have Cerebral Palsy and I would like your input because I have a GoPro hero 7 silver and if you need help please let me know
Thank you
I think if you can’t afford the Hero 10. Forget the Akaso, look at a used Hero 8 or 9 instead
I agree Jonn👊
Came for the camera and bought the cereals.....
But does that color on the GoPro really depict the true color? Is the sky really that blue? Is the color just being enhanced for deeper color but not true color?
However, both are expensive for me! In Bangladesh Akaso will cost 27000 and Gopro 43000 taka
David: Just got a reply from Akaso, “Brave 8 is currently out of stock and will not be available for a short period of time, probably 3-5 months. ” ☹
I hate the GoPro over-saturated colours. I'd go for the Akaso and with the money saved, go away for a couple of days with it.
Hello (:
I have a question, it is possible to switch from normal video to slow motion with the waterproof case on, per example? Meanwhile you are diving and you can't take the case off. I have the feeling that, since the screen is not working meanwhile the case is on, the general options are really limited with just the two buttons on top... Thank you for your help!
GoPro is exactly what it means = Pro. If quality is what you are looking for then it is GoPro.
Nice content cheap vs expensive
