The ballad is a variant of the drowned sister/drowned swan/two sisters folk story. There are several of these but they follow the same beats, sister one has thing that sister two wants (sometimes there's a third sister but the story is the same with or without them), sister two drowns sister one, sister one's body floats along until someone sees the body and mistakes it for a swan(while OCCATIONALLY its a mermaid, its 90% of the time a swan), the body is dismembered and turned into an musical instrument usually something with strings like a harp or a fiddle, this person takes the sister instrument and plays it before her family where through music she manages to speak and accuse sister one of killing her.
You asked, "a swan, what's that about?" and its a little hard to say. Its likely a combination of metaphors, swans are seen to represent love, beauty, and purity. But likewise we have dozens of stories involving people cursed to transform into birds, but particularly a large number involving maidens turned into swans. This choice likely feeds into that aforementioned symbolism of purity and beauty within the maiden, but this therefore leads a new metaphoric meaning to a swan, transformation.
So to see the dead sister as a swan is likely a combination of these two ideas; alluding to the transformation the sister has undergone (being dead) and will later undergo (being turned into a musical instrument) and notions of her observable purity and beauty, perhaps even the tragedy of the death of such a pure and beautiful thing.

I've always seen the Swan line as just a poetic visual, a floating body in a white dress looking like a Swan
But the version I listen to puts the line as "father fish in the dam, for there's either a maid or a milk white Swan has drowned in the dams of Minorie"

Swans are known to drown people who get too close to their eggs, which I believe is a common reason, though it's a rare one. Another reason for the Swan is likely that the Sister is beautiful, like how Swans are described as well.

I love how from eve's point of view its a happy fairytale, escaping from the witch and gaining a sister, but from hannah's point of view its a dark and horrible story more like a changeling or doppleganger, one day someone who looks like her shows up and she lets her stay and in return shes forced to live half a life and is routinely tortured (gets a tooth pulled without anaesthetic, hairbrush incident, punched because of something eve did etc) and ends up losing her parents, baby (not literally but she loses her ability to give birth to simons child while eve can), and husband to this doppleganger like no wonder she was violent sometimes and ended up snapping

So, the song they sing is an old folktale, and I'm not sure if she sings it in full in game. But in the song, the fiddler plays the fiddle made of the dead sister at if I recall correctly, the wedding feast, and it wails out in her voice and tells the truth of her murder in front of everyone. So this could possibly indicate that one of the sisters is deliberately trying to out the other as a murderer.

Kinda a floppy idea but I've seen people with DID often describe their internal world as a physical space or like an "extra room in a house". Leaning into the alters theory could the attic not have been real and that's why the police 'didn't search it' and the parents/Simon seemingly never went in there? And the idea of them going to play there is equivalent to entering their internal world (hence the associations with fairy/fantasy stories and the doll house that seemingly didn't fit)?

So I'll jut say for my two cents, i don't think the system theory makes much sense given things like the tattoo and the bruise, as well as other things like Simon genuinely believing there to be two of them because of said tattoo. Like, if there was only one Hannah, why would he specifically take note of the tattoo at the bar? Why would she be hiding it at home with him but not hiding it at the bar? I guess you could make it work, but I don't think so personally.
However, I do think there's a more compelling "There are no twins" reading of the work, and that is the reading that Hannah invented Eve entirely specifically to throw off the police. In this situation, things that don't add up in other peoples' behaviors/Hannah's appearance (like Simon taking note of the tattoo, the tattoo being there for one interview but not for others, the bruise that appears and then disappears) can all be chalked up to deliberate fabrication. Hannah decides when she's going to act like Eve and when she's not, she reinforces this fabrication by giving herself a black eye and then covering it up with makeup, she covers her tattoo up with makeup on some interviews but not others, all to construct an elaborate alibi and cast just enough doubt on herself that the police can't justify charging her with murder. One piece of evidence for this theory: During the lie detector scene, she deliberately sighs heavily after saying her own name, thus messing with her breathing and heart rate. Given how lie detectors work, this would throw the results off, and make her name look like a lie. If she was scheming, this then gives more credence to this idea that she's not really the perpetrator, aka Hannah, but instead this mostly innocent twin sister, Eve. So taking all this into account, it's possible that Hannah is just a master manipulator (i'd argue that the interviews show that both twins are extremely adept at manipulation, if nothing else) and could be messing with the police to get away with murder and essentially restart her life as a new person, as Eve, and let Hannah "disappear."

Something I really want to point out is that the player character, Eve's(?) daughter, is named Sarah. Sarah is the name that Hannah wanted for her and Simon's daughter. Hannah is so greatly repulsed by Eve/having a twin/sharing a life with someone that she greatly opposed having Ava as a daughter, because it's symmetrical.
I find that interesting because Eve LOVES the idea of being twins. It made her special, like a princess in a story. So I find it interesting that Eve named her daughter Sarah in the end. It's such a regular, un-princess-like, ordinary name.

Funny thing, I was actually born with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck! I really like how they used it in the story, since most people, knowing how humans choke, would probably assume the baby *would* die. But babies don't start breathing through their lungs until the umbilical cord is cut, since they're getting basically everything that allows them to grow and survive through the cord, including oxygen! So, while they had to be very gentle because they're still dealing with a literally newborn baby, all they had to do for me was get me out, unwrap the cord, and then cut it.
Also, I don't know if this happens to all babies who have that happen, but I didn't cry at all after I was born. (Which freaked my mom out to hell and back.) So, if that is a side affect of the cord being wrapped around the neck, Florence *could* probably convince the parents that Eve was dead as long as they didn't get a good look at her. (Since she'd still be looking around and moving.)
It's really interesting to me how I'm able to connect to this story, in a weird way!

In normal female development, all girls have hymens. It's just a thin layer of tissue that protects the vaginal canal. Many girls suffer hymen injuries in sports and other activities like horseback riding. Many women even have hymenal remnants, or strands of the broken hymen that still remain and can be seen. This commonly happens shortly before and after childbirth, where the remnants can become swollen due to pregnancy hormones. The hymen is a completely normal part of the female anatomy. Whether it is in tact or not has no bearing on an individual's value. We are all worthy in God's eyes 🙏❤️

    • @blaise931
      @blaise931 4 месяца назад

@@henotic.essence The hymen doesn't cover the vaginal opening, the hymen surrounds the vaginal opening by a few millimetres, and is either circular or crescent in shape. If the hymen is covering the vaginal opening either fully or partially (imperforate covers fully, and microperforate, cribriform and septate cover partially), surgical intervention is required to remove it. Menstrual clots can't pass through microperforate and cribriform hymens, and imperforate hymens don't allow menstrual fluid or tissue to pass at all. This can lead to toxic shock or a major infection of the vaginal canal. Septate hymens are less problematic, but should be removed because they would make potential penetration very uncomfortable. Normal hymens do often tear due to injury during sports, or childbirth. In the case of childbirth, it's usually repaired with stitches or surgical glue after birth. The hymen will recede in the case the it breaks and isn't repaired, which leads to the hymenal remnants that you're talking about. Hymenal remnants often occur *after* childbirth, when the hymen is pushed out of its receded position. Pregnancy hormones don't lead to the swelling of hymenal remnants, it's all the pushing and stretching of the vaginal area that leads to swelling of hymenal remnants. (I don't mean for this comment to be combative or argumentative, just informational. There's a lot of myth and misinformation surrounding discussion of hymens. I did a lot of fact checking while writing this comment.)🙂

As someone with DID, its REALLY refreshing to hear someone talk about DID with respectful (and accurate!) language instead of basically boiling it down to "murder alter disorder". I hate that most DID representation in media is about murderers, but as a mystery writer myself I feel like it could be used for some really interesting stories (if done well and respectfully). Some of your theories line up surprisingly well with what can happen in real systems, it really feels like you tried to do your research.
On host transference: That can happen, but it's not necessarily scary! Often times when a host transference happens, it's because the current host is just not equipped to deal with the current situation (DID is mostly a disorder formed to cope with trauma and stressful situations- if a certain alter cannot handle the situation, a different one switches in to apply a different response, one that might make the system feel safer. That doesn't necessarily mean it WILL make the situation safer, but traumatized brains struggle to realise what is safe and what is not, and oftentimes what is familiar feels safer- even if it's actually harmful). I've had about three or four host transferences through my whole life- yes, the first time I experienced it it was pretty scary, but when you have the right supports in place and a safe enough environment, especially one where you can safely express your plurality (plural/plurality or multiple/multiplicity being another word for being a system), it can be a lot less stressful and even helpful. Also, given enough time and the right kinds of recovery, buried (often referred to as dormant) alters can reemerge later in life. (Our own host from when we were a teenager disappeared after we were out of high school, but a little over five years later we're in a place where they can come back. For some alters it can be like they were still aware "in the background" the whole time, other times it's almost like waking up from a coma and having to be reintroduced to the world. One of our alters went dormant in 2019 and came back in 2023- he almost didn't believe everyone else when they told him The Plague happened while he was gone. We all found it really fucking funny, including him)
Also, there is a possible way that the twins theory and system theory could BOTH be true, in a way. I've heard some stories- though I've never met any systems like this personally- of children who were meant to be twins, but one twin died during pregnancy or infancy, and somewhere down the line the surviving twin forms an alter of their deceased sibling (often called an "introject", when an alter is based on a preexisting person- be it in real life, living or dead, or even fictional). Some alters even come with false memories or pseudomemories (sometimes referred to as "exomemories") that form a rationality as to why they exist or how they formed in the system in the first place. Sometimes, as well, DID can be covert, meaning the person with the condition literally doesn't find out they have it until years and years later (I was actively switching and experiencing symptoms of DID almost four years before anyone in my life ever figured it out). That could mean the pseudomemories take precedent over the real memories in the brain, and the person fully has no idea they're literally living two lives. In a child, those kinds of things can be even harder to parse from reality. It could be that they've formed some pseudomemories in their childhood, and because they likely believed these stories were true as a child, they have very little reason to believe they didn't actually experience those things, unless presented with actual evidence.
In terms of the tattoo basically disproving the system theory: it could be possible that it is some form of temporary tattoo, although that is unlikely. Maybe Eve, every time she switches in, applies the false tattoo, almost to show that it's her in front, and then by the time Hannah comes back, it's been washed off or faded away. The tattoo doesn't look super vivid, possibly faded a bit from the years- although that could be a convenient lie, saying the tattoo is old when really it's just fading from having been on all day.
Their drinks being different also tracks. We have one alter who keeps eating pepperoni pizza even though the rest of us fucking hate pepperoni
EDIT: On fusion of the two identities- fusion is also a thing that can definitely happen in systems! There are technically two things you could be describing here- in a temporary fusion of identity, that's often referred to as "blurring" or "blending", where it's not entirely clear which alter is fronting or perhaps they both are at once, called cofronting. This can happen for various reasons, but usually reverses itself after a relatively short period of time. On the other hand what's called "Final Fusion" can be the end goal stated for most DID recovery, where all the different alters form back into a single identity. Keep in mind, this is not a one size fits all solution- some systems work better with what's called "Functional Multiplicity", or basically continuing to function as multiple while working on fixing the specific distress points of the disorder, like memory issues and uncontrollable switching. My system is currently working towards the latter, and with many years of work, we have lessened our trauma responses and function kind of like a group of friends all trying to keep one very large and temperamental Sim alive.
Sometimes, systems can also have alters that intend to harm other alters in the system, called persecutors. Persecutors are not inherently dangerous- they often form as some sort of defence mechanism, like a forced fight instead of flight response. This can also be a form of self hate ("The kind of hate you can only feel towards yourself," was it?) maybe hating the other alter for being "weak" or "a coward" or for being percieved as not doing enough to protect or help the system as a whole. That one scene in Lord of the Rings where Gollum is having a conversation with Smeagol, calling him weak and mocking him for crying and then deciding to do something horrible because that feels safer and easier than believing that the Hobbits would truly be kind to him? That's a pretty decent example. Sometimes one alter can actually FORCE another alter into dormancy- persecutors can sometimes do this for any of the reasons described above. Smeagol even manages this temporarily in Lord of the Rings, before he's thrown back into abuse and his defence mechanism is forced to reemerge.

The attic is probably because of their obsession with the Rapunzel story since she's secretly kept at the top of a tall tower. Rapunzel gave birth to twins in the original story.
Hannah is the witch in Eve's story: she kept Rapunzel hidden in the tower/attic. The witch finding out that Rapunzel was pregnant was how she knew out about the prince, the catalyst for their final conflict. The prince was also tricked into climbing up to a waiting witch with cut/false blonde hair (blonde wig motif) And! The silver stuck in Simon is reminiscent of the thorn stuck in the Prince's eye which had caused his blindness when he fell into a thorny bush after being pushed by the witch.
The beginnings of the Rapunzel story echo through their infertility/miscarriage. In the story, the witch was also Rapunzel's parents' neighbor.
...Unrelated but when the chat said to go across the street I thought it was long lost Hannah trying to get in touch with her niece lol

I have so many thoughts so I'm gonna make this comment as I watch.
Honestly the whole "hairbrush incident" as I'll call it is even more horrifying when you understand that hymen breaking can happen from so much more than sex, and that often it SHOULDN'T break during sex at all.
Also a miscarriage so late and so close to the parents' death also raised a few red flags.
It is also possible that the periods stopped due to a phantom pregnancy (i think that's what it's called) where the body will act as if it is pregnant even though it isnt. There's also lots of other reasons but that's the one that stuck to my brain.
I'm not at the very end yet, still about an hour left as I get to writing this part of my ramblings, but I do believe if twin theory is in play that Eve forced the twinship and that Hannah never wanted it, finally got fed up, and Eve spiraled when Hannah got pregnant (likely offing their parents maybe as revenge for not getting to grow up normally, and potentially had something to do with Hannah's miscarriage especially since it was so complicated that it left Hannah infertile). Hannah might have killed Simon in a blind fit of rage or self defense during the altercation, or it's possible Eve did it and once more forced Hannah back into their twin act. I could believe Eve also finally killing Hannah at the end of it all.
It should also be pointed out how inaccurate lie detector tests are. I know this is fiction but I doubt with how thorough the details have been in this game I feel it's an important detail to keep in mind. Eve could fake her way through to get the response she wanted.
I also feel like Eve projects a lot of her feelings onto Hannah and just doesn't see her as a real person which was why she held onto her so hard even when she supposedly tried to live her own life. She never wanted her own life, she wanted HANNAH's life, even if she might not have been fully aware of it. She said it herself, she thought they HAD to merge back together for EVE to be whole. Hannah was always a tool for Eve to have her fairytale life. At least depending on which stories Eve told were true.

I really appreciate the sidenote about her face being blank when she says she loved Simon seeming suspicious, is specifically in relation to this being an actress in a fictional world! Some people irl have a tendency to shut down emotionally or simply emote less when they're experiencing extreme emotions, and other people very often assume that means they don't carr, which can be very damaging. Obviously in situations like this game (regardless of whether that's the case here, I'm only 11 minutes in and have no idea) you can get wrongfully blamed for something because people find you suspiciously unaffected by something, but I've also had experiences where someone did something cruel to me, and then justified it to me and others by saying it couldn't have been that bad since I wasn't upset. So yeah, thank you so much for touching on this Mr Peacock!!

As someone with DID (thank you for the respect btw) my cope for the theory is the same as the actor's performance: the tattoo could easily be temporary. Weve gone to some pretty funny extremes to feel individuality so bulk buying a temp tattoo of an apple and snake you saw in hot topic is well within the realm of believability for me. Especially because (if you're not getting along well) it comes with the free punishment of making them peel it off. Bruise is harder but that what cope is for
Also as for the wind and rain song, the final morbid bit about fiddles is how the folksong actually ends ( in the version i found, anyway). My interpretation of the original uses the final part to explore storyteller's tendencies to callously scalp emotion from real tragedies to gain power and influence, plucking the bones from her hands and very breast to tell her story from their hands. What it means for Her Story, maybe Eve really likes the idea that a story can be so scultped postmortem. Perhaps???

Here's a floppy one for ya:
Eve does not exist. Not in a "she's a legal ghost" way. Not in a "she's just a construct" way. In a "Hannah is a sociopath weaving a story to get away with another murder" way. Tattoo could be just a temp(and with pause between interviews while she lawyers up could be made permanent). It would explain all the "slips". She uses the interviews to plant a rich seedbed of hooks that aren't real clues but will take the cops, infatuated with a compelling narrative of discovering a decades long mystery, on a wild goose chase.
As for "another" part. Well, the parents are obvious. She knew the house and she knew death caps. And maybe Florence. Hannah's parent's are noted to have been always busy. Who would make a better babysitter that an elderly midwife who helped with her birth? But who would be more boring for a kid to stay with than an elderly midwife? She'd probably be acquitted by a jury of her peers on that one.
Additionally, in the end Sarah is asked if she now understands why her mother, "Eve", did what she did. But what she did? Aiding and abetting her sister doesn't seem like much of a mysterious motivation.

    • @KadSel

    • @Alotaro-the-Real
      @Alotaro-the-Real 4 месяца назад +42

Exactly what I'm thinking too. It seems like its intentionally easy to get sucked into the Mysterious or tragic backstories she's weaving. That she too often acts in a way that is contradicting or confusing. We only have her words, Her Story, to work with. It seems to me that she is intentionally setting up both interpretations, feeding them with "Slip ups", so that if someone disagrees with one they'll be drawn to the other as they are set up to be dichotic. Meanwhile the third option, the simplest and with least leaps of logic, that she is weaving a story to get away with murder slips under the radar. Whether she does so by being declared to not have been the murderer and rather an accomplice or to be mentally unwell and thus not fit to be judged under regular law is both acceptable from where she sits. People often want to feel clever, so give them a puzzle with false solutions and they'll happily walk away never knowing they were wrong.

Haven't finished video yet to see if it comes up, but thoughts from my playthrough: I feel like there's a very strong possibility that actually Simon was having an affair with someone else entirely, a blonde, and this whole thing is a very convoluted way to ensure that she can plead insanity even if they don't believe the twins thing, by erasing *her* from the narrative completely. If she's not twins, it was a delusion; if she's twins, her sister did it. But those aren't the only two possibilities!
It's such a "mom" thing to do, too: don't ask "what do you want for a snack", just say "do you want an apple or an orange" so the kid doesn't say they want candy...

I definitely think Eve killed their parents, and I think Hannah suspects that that’s the case
When she’s talking about it in the interview she has this tone, staring off into space as she ruminates on it as if she’s realizing in that moment that there is ONE person who might’ve had motive- or maybe she’s just going over a suspicion she already had before.
Meanwhile in Eve’s confession at the end, she talks about how the police ruled it an accident and “didn’t even check the attic”. Based on the tone and the context of the statement, it sounds like she’s implying that they would’ve figured out it wasn’t an accident if they had checked the attic i.e if they’d found /her/ up there.

the tragic love story under the system theory is so compelling. Simon, somehow finding Eve out in the world and loving her just as much as Hannah. Him perhaps understanding what he was experiencing (shown by him creating a twin gift, the mirror, which from Eve's perspective would have been romantic; despite the violent rage it causes the jealous Hannah) but the three of them not able to live their happily ever after despite Simon's gentle intentions. idk if that's floppy enough for y'all 😅

  • @jrj5893

So I've finished the video, and I have a different theory. What if Hannah poisoned her parents, because she was trying to kill Eve? Eve said that she had been feeling sick and slept really hard, through their parent's death - I am SERIOUSLY wondering how the hell Eve stayed in the attic and was able to eat - where was the food coming from? Was she taking food from their parents' fridge? At the time it doesn't seem like Eve would have had access to much money, so I can see Hannah bringing in extra food into the house that was supposedly for their parents, but also for Eve, that sort of thing. If Eve had been feeling sick she might not have eaten very much, which meant she might have gotten a smaller dose of the poison.
I don't know, just seems weird that she's sick at the same time that their parents are murdered. And I can see their dad not looking too closely at food that their loving daughter had made for them, thus not noticing the mushrooms being suspicious.

At your recommendation, my mystery solving mother and I gnawed on this game like a strip of raw hide for about three days straight. This game was practically made for our brains. Sadly we got kind of frustrated once we reached the bottom layer of things, as we weren't really satisfied with nebulously juggling between two possible answers. I think we ultimately believe in the system theory, as Eve's backstory is just too preposterous, but we can't really get past the extra fingerprints to call it a case closed. Either way, we thoroughly enjoyed the ride, so thank you for taking the time to talk about it!

Love the way you write and present. You really treat games as an art form, though your movie stuff is great as well. No one really makes content like you, where they really dig in to the fine details of the game, most people just do broad strokes.
I like how you present as if we are playing the game with you, sprinkling bits of analysis and commentary. Building up to the end where you present everything and offer deeper analysis/commentary. The white board helps keep everything coherent if I get lost. It’s almost like you’re a detective figuring out a game and its motive. All that makes it really engaging for relatively long videos.

I really appreciate you talking about things in a sensitive manner when it comes to DID, we can tell you've genuinely put effort into understanding it. I'm currently at 2:29:30 of the video, so if you address this later I apologise. Regardless, if we take Hannah as the host, but suddenly her disappearing with Eve becoming the main alter who presents herself, that's not super far-fetched. A host, or any alter, may go dormant after a severely traumatic event (such as a murder), meaning that another alter may have to pick up the slack. Just thought you'd find that interesting lmao. I have a theory about the ending. I think you play as Eve's daughter and her mother, Eve, is in jail because she chose to take the fall for her twin sister and is in jail. Eve most likely let her sister, Hannah, take the wig (which is missing) and take her place as a 'ghost in the machine', although if she ever got fingerprinted it would be a problem as her fingerprints would be recognized. Her daughter is working to understand why her mother is in jail. I think the police would have no choice but to arrest Eve as Hannah is 'missing' and unless the police could get a hold of both sisters, they wouldn't be able to prove the twin theory. That's all I got.

I actually tried to google the laws for the UK on sentencing pregnant women and I couldn't find anything. I didn't too look too long but I can only *assume* that if eve did end up getting sentenced, she most likely didn't have a baby in jail or go to jail(for very long if at all). Looking into more information for the UK laws at the time of or before 1994 would maybe add more context to the ending too.

The attic is a metaphore - it means brain. Our brain is located "upstairs", right under "the roof" of our body. Hannah opened the door hid Eve in the attic = she welcomed her other personality with open arms. A little introverted, shy girl living in the world of fairytales was happy to have a companion. The police and parents never looking into the attic = they never found out about Eve. But at some point cracks started to show more and more - Eve was pulling all the boys, they prefered her to Hannah. One day they met Simon who was more interested in Hannah though. That's why she didn't want to share anymore, as finally she was the one being prefered. Eve didn't like it. Hannah became pregnant, moved out and started living her own life. Eve saying "I was still living in the attic" means she didn't disappear. Simply became "caged" by Hannah and almost forgotten, as she enjoyed her new life. Eve would still take control from time to time though. Started sleeping around either to damage Hannah's reputation (if Simon finds out, he'll divorce her and this will make Hannah weaker, easier to be manipulated by Eve) or even wanted to make Hannah lose her baby (notice how happy she is about it - the whole "universe corrected itself" nonsense). Then, Eve poisoned their parents, so Hannah becomes even weaker and moves back to her family house. The house where Hannah and Eve had their best years. This kicks in nostalgia and makes Hannah even more vulnerable. Eve saying "Hannah didn't want the attic to be redecorated" or something like that = she rejected the option of therapy and meds after the big trauma (probably offered by Simon) as she was scared, the psychologists and psychiatrists would find out Eve existed.

I played Her Story upon it's release since I heard a lot of good things about it and it being a detective style game it's right up my alley. But I was let down by it. The mystery didn't grab me and the secret twin narrative was too absurd for me to really buy into. Your System Theory and the evidence you put forward, even if it is as you said not likely, does add another layer to the game and makes me appreciate it more now than my own initial playthrough.

  • @TheAngryBeard

There's one minor throughline that you appear to have missed: Hannah's wedding ring. Hannah almost never fusses with it, likely because she's just used to wearing it all the time. But when we see Eve with the ring, even during Interview 1, she fidgets with her hands quite a bit- most prominently fiddling with the ring. Now, I think you could argue for this making sense in either of the two main theories being posited here, but the real clincher for me is the final interview. Eve very specifically does not have the ring anymore, and though she does still fidget with her hands quite a bit, it's not until near the very end- where she recalls The Birthday Incident- that we can see her rubbing at where the ring WOULD be. If we follow the logic that she intended to maintain the charade as seen through the lie detector test and your stated implications, why would she no longer be wearing the ring? Personally, I think it's a sign that Hannah took off with what few things were important to her, and Eve is staying behind to distract, just like with the Glasgow alibi (even though she realizes the writing might be on the wall for the whole scheme.)
